Footnotes and full justification?

I'm adding endnotes (footnotes) to the manuscript I'm typing, but every time I insert one, the line goes from being fully justified to unjustified on the right hand side. The author wants full justification and I can't find anything in either books or online help that addresses this problem. I don't want to have to manually insert spaces between words to fill out the line - can anyone please help me????
Thanks you
Marianne

Hey Yvan,
Thanks for the help; it must be a bug in this version as I don't recall it in previous versions.
Your idea is a great one, but as it's a manuscript, I'm liable to end up with hundreds of footnotes (the way this author is, it could be thousands!) and I can't afford the time to go back to each one and set full justification in a text frame.
I think I'll just have to put the footnotes in manually (they're end-notes which makes it easier); just put the number in the text, then go to the end of the manuscript and type in the endnote.
It's a pain that the bug hasn't been fixed...
Thanks again
Marianne

  • Hyphenation and full justification

    Hi all,
I have a small problem. I enter the following text in Pages 2:
Business logic is also a major problem, I would recommend that you read Maarten Mullander's paper "CRUD, Only when you can afford it" (CRUD = Create, Read, Update, Delete) to further understand this issue.
My document margins are 2cm left, and 2cm right (A4 format). The font is Times, Regular, 11pt. The text is full justified. The hyphenation is active. At the end of the second line, an empty space appears, not filled by the justification algorithm.
I would like to know if you have the same behavior ?
    Thanks,
    Olivier

    Hi Frank;
This is not the problem. Justify with bottom line left aligned is the default and there is no choice for justify all. This is OK, and as you say, as it should be.
The trouble is with an intermittent fault that only seems to affect some users. Many don't justify at all - and it is only extensive text that columnates or paginates that will reveal one or other aspect of this problem in extended use.
Olivier is the third in these forums to report one aspect of this intermittent failure of the justification algorithm. This is a failure of the text to reach the end of the line when word wrap occurs. A space is sometimes left dangling where wordwrap should take the preceding text to the end of the line. An extempore fix is to increase the character spacing for the offending line, but this should not be needed, and moreover if there are ligatures in the affected line these must then be adjusted back again, or the extended kerning will override the ligatures. The problem needs fixing at program level.
There is another aspect of this problem that has also been reported by three users, including myself, as I recall - though mine was in reply to confirm that the problem was not unique to another user reporting it.
This second occasional failure results in just the problem to which you refer: namely that the last line of a paragraph yet to be completed, or even a new line following text flow from column to column, or as I have encountered it, following pagination, will extend all the way to the right margin, even when it contains only two or three words. Like the first, this plain annoyance can be fixed: in this case by inserting a paragraph ending, or hard line break, and then continuing to type ahead of it. But that's a makeshift, and these things should not be happening at all - never mind rarely, or only with intensive text entry.
Such faults being intermittent, they will not be easy for Apple to identify or repair - but they certainly do indicate that the justification algorithm in Pages 2 does need some cleaning up. This is why I recommend that anyone encountering these problems should take care to report them. Each case of which Apple become aware might help them to recognise what's happening, and so to provide a fix for it.
But I won't ask you to try to emulate the case in which I have found them. I'm reckoning on about 15,000 words to a chapter, and I'm getting close to the end of my first. So that's what I call "intensive text entry."
Many writers using Pages and reporting to these forums are entering text in manuscript form, set left, for their editors to have typeset later. I want to see mine as it will be set - which does rather test the program for even occasional errors. More isolated examples, like Olivier's, can only help Apple to clean up the code, so I'm glad to find him reporting it.
    Regards.

  • Last Paragraph line when using full justification stretches too much

One thing that really bothers me is the way that the last line of a paragraph will stretch out over the whole width of a page when you are using full justification, even when the line is only one or two words. This is simply unacceptable from an esthetic point of view. Does Pages 2 fix this annoying behavior—which really makes full justification practically unusable—or is that still broke?

    Hullo jzents:
I've run into this too, although only when pagination
occurs: i.e., you go to the next page. Haven't struck
it otherwise, and frankly had barely noticed it until
I changed to Pages 2. However it's still there. I
haven't struck it enough yet to find a workaround -
although you might try inserting your cursor in front
of a paragraph or line break - or checking invisibles
to see if you can spot what's going on when it
happens. Trouble is, before I get to that, the
problem's usually gone. To cheer you up a bit though,
it's a failing of other programs too, and I often
notice it in my local newspaper where it doesn't get
    cleaned up at all!
But seriously, it's a bug and needs a fix. Be sure to
    report it to Apple.
And if anyone's got a surefire trick for dealing with
it in the meantime, I'll be trying their answer too.
On the other hand, if it were something you could
live with through a method to avoid it - then why
isn't it in the help screens?
    Cheers.
You told me what I did not want to know, which is that it is not fixed in Pages 2. It does not happen in some other WP that I have used, so it is very disapointing that Pages fails in this regard. Cheers!

    Hi,
I would use the Sign Out option in the Mac version and then Quit the App.
Then On restarting the App I would add back the Apple ID.
The iOS devices should then get a Pop up to say the Mac is using it's Apple ID and the iPhone number.
    This should be accepted.

You didn't mention what error(s) you've encountered? A workaround for the most commonly hit problem is here Re: error in Muse : Object UID:U6875 has two (or more) owners: U3633 and U3165
If you have a copy of your .muse file that has not been saved using 2014.3, you can downgrade by uninstalling Muse and then choose Previous Version in the Filters drop down in the Apps panel of the Creative Cloud desktop app. There will be a popup next to Muse where you can select a prior version to install.

  • MISSION CONTROL, LAUNCHPAD, and FULL SCREEN APPS (one month later)

I'm pretty good embracing a new thing when it comes along.  I downloaded LION the day it come out, which was over a month ago at this point. On that day, I immediately found MISSION CONTROL and LAUNCHPAD both uninituitve and pointless.  Unhandy iCandy.   And of FULL SCREEN APPS?  Not necessary on an iMac anyway.
So I quickly sought out quick solutions to 'fix' these new features.  Launchpad and full screen apps have the advantage that they can be simply ignored.  This is a good thing.  Mission Control, on the other hand, got in the way of a beloved feature for me:  what was once SPACES and EXPOSE.  That is, I couldn't simply ignore MC because I still needed the previous helpful features in Snow Leopard.
My solution was kind of surprising and eye-opening.  It's complicated to explain but I thought I'd share.  This conclusion is likely best suited for someone not using a small screened Mac.  It turns out that most users (with big enough screens) don't really need Mission Control, Launchpad, Spaces, or Full Screen apps.
    At all.
Let's go through that conclusion, one by one:
    FULL SCREEN APPS
If you have a relatively big screen (20 iMac for instance), why do you need Safari full screen?  Unless you intend to sit across the room from the computer, no reason.  And there's lots of bright empty space when you do this.  Do you need the Mail app full screen?  If you need reading glasses, maybe, but otherwise, nope.  I find it's easier just to stretch out an app pretty big and leave it at that.
Full screen apps DO offer a nice feature which is making your desktop, menubar, and dock go BYE BYE.  I can see where sometimes this is a useful feature, but typically -- NOPE.  Typically I want access to my dock (to switch between open apps without the added step of cancelling full screen first), and typically I want access to my menubar so that I can glance up and see what time it is or find an app menu quickly.
The only feature I find worthy of praise with full screen apps is that they hide the clutter on your desktop.  But there's an app in the Mac App Store which makes your desktop icons vanish with the touch of a button (CAMOUFLAGE).  I mean, what's the point of a wallpaper if you bury it with desktop clutter or eliminate it with full screen apps?  If it's a busy and distracting wallpaper, umm... you picked bad wallpaper.
    LAUNCH PAD
LAUNCH PAD offers an iOS experience inside OS X.  At first I thought it was completely silly.  After a month now, I kinda get why it's there.  Kinda.
You see, before LP, to duplicate it's functionality, you'd have to organize folders yourself.  Put folders of various apps together.  Place them somewhere in the finder heirarchy.  Then drag those folders into the part of the dock with the trashcan.  Then you could click them open and have access to similarly themed folders of apps.  The problem here, of course, is that unless you're a power user, you'll never do this.
So Apple thought, AH-HA, we'll just drag into OS X a paradigm that users already get from iOS.  Clumping apps together any way you like them.  The misfire, if you ask me, is not allowing users to drag the new iOS folders straight into the dock when finished.  That is to say:  copies of said organized folders.  It's as if Apple's software people have complete contempt for the dock -- and are desperate to have users abandon it.
My problem is that I like having folders in my dock of stuff I need.  It just works, as Steve says.  Going to the same EXACT place every time I need anything is more intuitive and graceful than ADDING an app called Launchpad that launches you into a different finder altogether.  Makes zero sense and THIS is why I say, like FULL SCREEN APPS, LP can basically be abandoned.
By the way:  need proof that Apple has complete contempt for the Dock?
    MISSION CONTROL/SPACES
A month has passed since MC was introduced and SPACES was eliminated.  I dare anyone to tell me why either is needed at all.  Before you get iMiffed, humor me for a moment and hear me out.
The notion of SPACES was that it's a neat way to keep like minded open apps together.  I totally bought into this, back in the day.  So much so that I was iMiffed when it was gone in Lion.  But let's look at this closer.
The REASON why we needed SPACES was that we could have WAY too many windows open at once on a Mac.  Right?  A big mess of windows covering each other up.  Suppose you're surfing in Safari but need iTunes?  But iTunes is hidden.  So what did you do?  You went to Spaces as step one, moused over to your iTunes space as move two, and then clicked it as move three.  Seems like a great solution until the day you discover that you could simply click on iTunes in the dock as move one and arrive at iTunes.  As one step.  Period.  Really simple, right?
Why have Spaces and apps dance around when you can just click the app you want and be done with it?  That's the critical observation to make in order to follow my entire line of reasoning.  Sure, it may look really cool and make Windows machines look like junk, but at the end of the day, why add two steps to something you might do 100 times a day -- switching between apps.
So why OH why did Apple add Spaces?  Simple:  because too many apps were visible at once in one 'desktop' window.  So if you can build many new desktops, there might only be one or two in each.  Great solution.  Right?
Wrong, as it turns out.  Because we still have the two extra steps.  It's a weak solution.  And it's in complete contempt of the Dock, which as it turns out, offers the strongest solution.
The strong solution would be that only one app is visible in your Mac's window at all times.  Say you're in Safari.  Despite having 12 other apps open, you only see Safari.  Your dock tells you that you have other apps open, but nothing else sits in your window BUT the app you're using.  So you want to go to iTunes?  So click on it in the dock and Safari vanishes and iTunes emerges by itself.  No other windows.  What could be simpler?  (This app is freeware known as ISOLATOR.)
If you download and try ISOLATOR, you'll say, umm, okay, but wait:  sometimes I do want more than one window in view.  Okay, fine, turn it off then.  From the handy menu bar menu.  I find that 98% of the time I need ISOLATOR on.  Mileage may vary.
So let's recap.  One third party software removes distracting desktop clutter, the other removes distracting app windows.  Both can be toggled on and off from the menu bar.  One is free, one costs $2.  These two solutions remove the only real feature of FULL SCREEN APPS and make SPACES and it's newfangled cousin MISSION CONTROL pointless.
Need that last one explained?  Well, what's Mission Control but a variant of spaces?  To invoke MC and switch to the needed window are those same two annoying steps Spaces added into the mix.  Nothing was fixed.  Plus, like spaces, you must invest time and energy organizing such spaces.
Why bother?  And so I ask again:  can somebody who's read and tried the above carefully explain to me why Mission Control, Launchpad, and Full Screen Apps are really needed at all?  (Outside of small screened Macs.)  Doesn't the dock and these two sharewares together solve most problems?
    Am I missing something?

I agree with everything you said about full screen apps, mission control and launchpad. For apps that made sense to run full screen, they already could under SL. Launchpad is totally unnecessary and Mission Control is a mere shadow of Expose and Spaces.
However, I feel you have not given due credit to Spaces. The point of Spaces is to let one organise logical desktops for different tasks, not just a way to reduce the number of windows on display. For example, I have a Space for software development where I run Xcode and the iPhone simulator, a Firefox window showing perhaps documentation or some other websites pertaining to software development, a Finder window that is opened in the folder with my design docs. I have another Space where I have the remote login sessions, yet another Space with another Firefox window where I do general surfing and emailing. I can switch between these spaces using a keyboard shortcut, which is much quicker than having to lift my hand off the keyboard, move it over to the mouse, move the mouse pointer over the Dock, find the app and click on it, only to find that it has switched to the wrong window of the app.
Without Spaces, organisation of my desktop is disrupted each time I want to switch task, whereas Spaces allows me to drop everything I am doing, go and do something completely different for a while and go back to my exact previous environment. I have a 27" iMac so am not short of screen space but I use Spaces extensively. BTW, switching Spaces using a keyboard shortcut is a lot faster on SL than the equivalent on Lion, thanks to the gratuitous screen animation of the latter.

  • Does OS installed through boot camp or in virtual machine has access and full control of the peripherals like native OS X Lion?

I am planning to buy new PC for my faculty needs and this time I am thinking to buy Apple laptop like Mac book Pro 13" or so ( I owe already IPhone and Ipad 2)
To make final decision I need few information . These are:

    2. Does OS installed through Boot camp or in virtual machine has access and full control of the peripherals like native OS X Lion?

    1. Yes. You can install Windows 7 natively using Boot Camp Assistant or you can install Windows 7 in a virtual machine using Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox
    2. If installed using Boot Camp Assistant Windows 7 uses all your computer's resources just as OSx does. If installed using a VM Windows 7 will share the computer's resources with OSx.
    3. A Boot Camp partition is separate from the OSx partition. The VMs allow sharing of files across partitions since both OS are running at the same time.
    4. No, not 100%.
    5. Too broad a question. Be specific about what feature you are asking about or search the Internet for comparisons. I use both and find they both work well.

    [Testing and Watching]
Based on following blog, I decide to test on my lab:
Full Mailbox Access Rights + Send On Behalf = Send As ?
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/ehlro/archive/2012/04/06/full-mailbox-access-rights-send-on-behalf-send-as.aspx
Description on my lab and test:
    Exchange 2010 + Outlook 2010
    Exchange 2013 + Outlook 2013
    Senders: A01, A02, … , A07, A08
    Recipient: A09
A01 grand permission to other senders.
    Two methods:
    a. Use A0x’s credential configure A01’s profile, then send From both A01 and A0x via Outlook. Watching result in A09’s Inbox and Sent Items which has message copy left.
    b. Use A0x’s credential configure A0x’s profile, then send From both A01 and A0x via Outlook. Watching result in A09’s Inbox and Sent Items which has message copy left.
    Result as following forms:
    1. Exchange 2010 + Outlook 2010 / Exchange 2013 + Outlook 2013
Using A0x’s credential configure A01’s mailbox, then send From both A01 and A0x
    To A09.
    2. Exchange 2010 + Outlook 2010 / Exchange 2013 + Outlook 2013
Using A0x’s credential configure A0x’s mailbox, then send From both A01 and A0x
    To A09.
    [Common Issue]
    1. [Issue]
    Exchange 2010 + Outlook 2010. A01 grand A03 Send As permission. However A03 can’t send as A01 to A09 and get NDR:
You can’t send a message on behalf of this user unless you have permission to do so. Please make sure you’re sending on behalf of the correct sender, or request the necessary permission. If the problem continues, please contact your helpdesk.
    Details as following pic:
    [Troubleshooting]
    1) Based on the NDR, it seems a permission issue. Check Send As permission, however the Send As permission configured correctly. Pic as below:
    2) ince the Send As permission configured correctly, it seems the permission hasn’t been replicated. Try to restart Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. It works.
Note: The Send As permission isn’t granted until after replication has occurred. Replication times depend on your Exchange and network configuration. To grant the permission immediately, stop and then restart the Microsoft Exchange Information
    Store service.
    2. [Issue]

    Details as below:
    [Troubleshooting]
    1) Also check the Send As permission configuration first.
    2) Then try to use A03 send as A01 to A09 via OWA. If OWA works well, it seems and issue on the Outlook client side.
    3) This behavior may occur if the OAB in Outlook isn’t updated. Try to download OAB manually.
    4) If doesn’t work, please close Outlook and try to delete all the OAB folder on your computer. The path of OAB folder in Win7, Win8 as below:
    \Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Offline Address Books
    5) Restart Outlook.
Note: Be aware that you cannot send e-mail messages on behalf of a mailbox if the mailbox is hidden from address list. When sending a message, Exchange requires that e-mail address is resolved in the
    From field.
    3. [Issue]
Exchange 2010. A01 grant A0x “Send As” or “Send on Behalf” permission. A0x send as/ send on behalf of A01. The message is only copied to the Sent Items folder in A0x’s mailbox (same as the result of my test). Also cannot configure Exchange 2010 so that the
message is copied to the Sent Items folder of both A01 and A0x.
    [Troubleshooting]
This issue occurs because Exchange server 2010 was designed to copy message to the Sent Items folder of the sender only. This issue can be solved by installing Exchange 2010 SP2 UR4. More details in the following KB:
Messages that are sent by using the "Send As" and "Send on behalf" permissions are copied only to the Sent Items folder of the sender in an Exchange Server 2010 environment

Nice guide Mavis, I recently explored the same topic. Few things you might want to add is the type of connectivity (Cached vs Online will produce different results) and to expand further on the methods of adding the other mailbox in Outlook (additional mailbox

  • Looking for a script to connect bodytext to footnote and cross-references

    Hi,
    Need to do the following:
I was provided with separate (tagged-text) files: bodytext, (foot)notes and cross-references. Now I am looking for a solution (script?) that can do the following:
to restore the connection between the body-text, the footnotes and te cross-references after placing these in a document in Indesign.
The cross-references should appear (in anchored text-frames) in the margin and the notes in a separate frame at the bottom of the page. If possible in the same way as footnotes in Indesign appear, but in a separate frame to be able to do some more formatting than native footnotes would accept.
I have tested the plugin: Side Heads from InTools, and tis works well with Indesign files tthat contain footnotes. But this doesn't work with separately placed footnotes from a tagged-text-file, as they re not knotted together.
I can't do any scripting myself.
I would appreciate any help, and I am looking forward to your response...
    Regards,

The first thing to do is:
regexp "match regexp = ([0-9]+)" $_cli_result match count
    if $count eq 0
    exit 0
    end
The second is a bit more challenging.  I think this will work:
cli command "show call active voice br"
    foreach line $_cli_result "\n"
    regexp "^([0-9a-zA-Z]+) : " $line match callid
    if $_regexp_result eq 1
      continue
    end
    regexp "^dur 1d" $line
    if $_regexp_result eq 1
cli command "show call active voice br | section $callid"
      syslog msg "$_cli_result"
    end
    end

  • Footnotes and Bibliography?

It appears that Apple has overlooked the ability to create footnotes and a bibiography in iBooks Author. (yet it's specifically targeted at the academic textbook market) Can this possibly be true???

I accidentally found out that iBooks Author will support footnotes! But you have to create them in another application first.
So here's my story. I use Scrivener 2.2 to create my books. But I really want to use iBooks Author to spice up the final product. I had text for a book typed in Scrivener, with footnotes already created. I copied and pasted them into iBooks Author and lo and behold, all of the footnotes were insterted at the end of the section in iBooks Author as endnotes!
The footnote numbers appeared by the text, and then at the end of the section, the footnote number appeared along with the note, I was also able to go to a footnote and decrease the size of the footnote number (which I like to be smaller than the chapter text). Heck, I'll just show you...
Here are screenshots (it's an old journal of my that I am footnoting). First screenshot is what it looks like in Scrivener, text on the left, footnotes on the right:
I naïvely copied and pasted this text into IBooks. Lucky for me, this is how it came out in iBooks Author:
I didn't realize that I had found a work-around for this footnote problem until I tried adding more footnotes while working in iBooks Author (which led me to these posts). So here's proof that if you create footnotes in another program, at least iBooks Author will recognize and create footnotes for you and put them at the end of the section. I figure it's better than nothing, but not very elegant for such an elegant program. Again, I am also able to change the font size of any footnote number or the text in a footnote.
By the way, if you use this copy and paste method, just make sure you copy and paste an entire chapter all at once. When I copied and pasted paragraph by paragraph, it reordered the numbers back to footnote 1 in each paragraph, and you don't want to re-number them by hand.
If anyone else has tried copying and pasting with another word processor with the same result, please let us all know.
You might be thinking, what's the point of all of this if I have to use two word processors? I think of iBooks Author as my last step, not a word processor. I don't plan on creating my book drafts in it (I've tried, I don't think it's very efficient), I've decided I just want to use iBoooks Author to layout the final content that I created using another word processor, one that has all of the tools I need for efficient writing. Pages, Word or maybe even TextEdit might also work for writing your draft. Since the stuff I write needs footnotes or endnotes, I really don't know of any other options at present if I want to use iBooks Author.

  • How can I adjust the space between the dividing line of the footnotes and the continuous text?

How can I adjust the space between the dividing line of the footnotes and the continuous text?

I want to extend the space so the dividing line does not stuck to the normal (continuous) text in my thesis. Do you have a solution? That would be perfect. Thanks a lot!

  • Send As and Full Controll permissions not working in OWA

I have an exchange 2013 enviroment where I work with send as and full access permisions via Active Directory groups.
I have given the group FC on a shared maibox and in outlook, the user who is member of this group can open the additional mailbox.
In owa the same user cannot open the additional mailbox, exept when I give the user directly FC on this mailbox.
How do I configure Exchange so the user can access the additional mailbox in owa, without giving him directly FC permissions.
btw In an exchange 2010 enviroment this issue is not there.

    Hi,
From your description, I recommend you restart IIS by running IISReset from a command prompt and check the result. I see others have the same issue, they resolve it by running IISReset.
Here is a thread for your reference.
