For restoring from backup itunes is asking for password

Hi Experts
for restoring from backup itunes is asking for password and i didn't give any password when backup was going on not even i checked on encrypt my backup.
please help me ASAP

See:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3057884
I too have experienced the "blame everything but Apple products/software" indoctrination of the Apple phone support techs!
I have a feeling that iTunes automatically switches encryption on and puts as default a previous iTunes store password but as I don't leave mine the same all the time (and don't feel the need to remember historic passwords that I'm not using to secure anything against) I have no clue what it is.
Good luck trying to get useful advice on here relating to the issue, it will go along the lines of...
1) Its your fault for setting it and forgetting the password,
2) We know everything and theres definately no way iTunes would set backups to encrypt without your knowledge and...
3) Theres no fix for this issue, you might be able to save some of your data, but most will be lost (unless you specifically ask for an iTunes redownload exemption/ token then your purchases could be lost too).
Welcome to the world of Apple!

If you encrypted the backup, there is no way around it. You will need to configure your iPhone as a new device.
    From iTunes: About iOS backups:
In the iTunes Summary screen, select "Encrypt iPhone backup" if you want to encrypt the information stored on your computer when iTunes makes a backup. Encrypted backups are indicated by a padlock icon, and a password is required to restore the information to iPhone. You may want to write down the password for your backup and store it in a safe place. If you use a Mac, when you set a password you can select to store the password in the keychain. With iOS 4 and later, you can transfer the iOS keychain backup to a new device if you encrypt the backup.
Warning: If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you forget the password, you can continue to back up and use the device, however you will not be able to restore the encrypted backup to any device without the password. You do not need to enter the password for your backup each time you back up or sync.
If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore, choose set up as a new device.

No there's not.  Otherwise that wouldn't be very secure, would it?

Hi ... I had to replace my iPad and I want restore from backup but I forgot my password, is there any way of recovering it?

Would the backup be password protected? I don't know ... After you restore from a back-up, and if you have passwords set up, would the newly restored iPad require a password or would it be "live" for 5 minute or however long the iPad was set to wait to require a password? Maybe wiser heads can advise...

Hi all, i backup up iphone in itunes but not realised it was password protected and now want to restore new handset from backup but keep asking me for password but no idea what it was,, pls help...

You are someone had to put a check in the box to encrypt your iPhone backup.
Warning: If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you forget the password you can continue to do backups and use the device, however you will not be able to restore the encrypted backup to any device without the password. You do not need to enter the password for your backup each time you back up or sync.
If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you will have to do a full software restore and when prompted by iTunes to select the backup to restore from, choose Set up as a new device.

  • Replacement iMac hard drive not an option for "restore from backup"

Got my iMac back from Apple today with a new hard drive following a hardware failure. Unfortunately, I cannot restore from Time Machine as the internal drive is not listed as a choice for "Destination". My Firewire drives are visible but the internal drive is not. It wasn't visible at the initial attempt to restore when the drive was under factor fresh OS installation, it wasn't visible after partitioning the drive, and it wasn't visible after repartioning into a single partition. Any advice or ideas/explanations?

In your "Applications" -> "Utilities" folder you'll find a utility named "Migration Assistant".
Migration Assistant was originally created for Mac owners who buy a new Mac and want to migrate all their data over to the new machine. But it turns out this is exactly what you do when you do a full restore from a Time Machine backup to a new/empty disk.
As a result, Migration Assistant was updated since they came out with Time Machine so that one of the options is "From a Time Machine Backup or other disk".
Choose that option and it should let you do your backup (it'll ask you what you want to restore... user accounts & folders, apps, etc.) You probably just want to have it restore everything.
When you get a new disk you really don't want to run Time Machine interactively to pick the restore. The interactive mode was really designed to help you search for subsets of files to restore (when you're missing just one or two things). You'll be missing a LOT if you try to do a restore that way.
There are some caveats... since you probably already created a user account without doing a restore first, you probably already created an account with the same name that you had before. Migration Assistant wont let you do a full restore overwriting an existing account. You can get around this by creating a temporary account (and flag it as an 'administrative' account), then delete all other accounts on the fresh hard drive. Now when you do the Migration you will have no conflicting accounts and all will go as expected. You can then delete the temporary admin account when you're done.
Time Machine should figure out that the backup does belong to your current machine BUT that the disk being backed up is NOT the original disk. This will cause it to not trust that it can tell what data has changed since the last backup and forces something called a "deep traversal". A deep traversal means it will do a comparison of every file in the backup with the corresponding file on computer to determine if it's the same -- and this takes about as long as an original Time Machine backup (as if you deleted the whole thing and started a new backup) except you wont lose your backup history. Expect the first backup to take many hours to complete. After that initial "deep traversal" you'll get normal backup performance on all subsequent backups.

  • Used iTunes to restore from backup and the Apple ID that shows up is a very old one

I have an iPhone 4s. I recently lost all of my contacts for some mysterious reason. I personally think it's a conspiracy by Apple to force me to upgrade to a new phone. Anyway, I hooked my phone up to my computer (Windows 7) and from iTunes I went to Devices, Restore from Backup. I know that within the last few weeks that I backed it up onto  iTunes but I cannot figure out from the newest iTunes how to find it. So I restored the backup but it backed up from November of 2012 (I am only assuming this because the most recent pictures that are in phone are from that date). It did restore my contacts from 2012 but there are no recent contacts in there plus I lost all my photos from November 2012 on. Which is no big deal. My problem is that the Apple ID that is showing up is from a very old account. The e-mail address is no longer even valid.I tried to delete iCloud from my phone so that I could put it back on with my new Apple ID but I cannot remember the password of my old id. When I go to reset my password for my old id and the security questions come up the first thing it asks for is my date of birth. When I put my date of birth in it says:
The authentication information provided does not match our records. Please verify your personal information and try again.
I know that I did not enter the wrong birth date when I first set up that account. So now I am stuck because I cannot get any further without that date of birth. I HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP. PLEASE AND THANK YOU.
PS-Not sure if this matters but I also upgraded to iOS 8 directly before I did the Restore From Backup.

    Hello risenhauer,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To reset your Apple ID password without knowing your security questions or have access to the email account, you will need to contact Apple Account Security in your country.  Links to contact can be found in the article below.

  • HT1414 My iPhone has crashed during a sync and now I can't restore from backup as it is asking for password to load the backup yet neither the lock code for the phone or my iTunes Password are working... I have no other password to all upon and need the r

My iPhone has crashed during a sync and now I can't restore from backup as it is asking for password to load the backup yet neither the lock code for the phone or my iTunes Password are working... I have no other password to call upon and need the restore to retrieve info onto my phone, I am a real novice to this...... please help, !!!!

If anyone else is looking for a solution to this same problem, I was able to get it working looking through several older discussions.
The solution was to use the password that I had on my iTunes account the very first time I set up the iPhone about a year ago.  I changed my iTunes password about 10 months ago;  but apparently, the backups continue to use the password that existed when the phone was first set up.
A couple of troubling things with this are that 1) I didn't apply a password when I did the backup this afternoon so I don't understand why it was required when I did the restore a few hours later. and 2) it makes zero sense why iTunes would not be smart enough to use the current accout password when requiring the password to restore from a backup made with no password.
I thought iTunes and Apple were smarter than that.  With so many posts stating exactly the same problem, it is clear that this is bug in the software.
    Best,
    Craig

  • HT1766 I am trying to restore my new iphone from a previous backup but itunes is asking for the backup password. But I never had one.

itunes is asking for a password for the backup that I did not set. I can NOT set up my new iphone and restore it from an old backup. What can I do?

This message is asking for the password that was added when the backup was first created IF you don't have this passcode you will be unable to restore from this backup.
    Good luck Friend.

  • HT1212 my song forgot his password.  I reformatted as described above but when i went to restore from backup it asked me for the password again!  now what?

my song forgot his password.  I reformatted as described above but when i went to restore from backup it asked me for the password again!  now what?

Then you or your son has encrypted the backup in iTunes.  This password is 100% whatever you or him put in when you turned on to encypt backups (its a check box in iTunes) and it has nothing to do with that code that was on the iPhone (unless by chance he decided to make it the same thing).
Anyhow, you can guess at an encryption password as many times as you like.  Since it's a local encryption, there is no way to reset it.  You either get it right eventually and then the restore will complete and you can turn if off in iTunes after that (using the password that worked), or the backup will never be usable without the password.
Keep trying to guess it until you give up, then just move on with setting the iPhone us as new.
