Forced shut down by mini dvi

when i plug the mini dvi adapter into my powerbook instead of detecting the projector disply (or anything at all) it opens the shut down/restrart window and then shuts down anyway, regardless of what choice i make. does anyone have any information?
this is very very urgent.
thanks

This is a 'kernel panic' - a complete System crash. They are normally caused by a dodgy peripheral or problematic RAM, so the first thing to try is to remove all peripherals except mouse and keyboard and see whether this helps.
Crashes like this can damage your disk Directory so you should run a disk repair - ideally every time this happens - before your disk gets messed up to the point where you can't start up.
And as a brody suggests, back up your data before something serious happens.

  • Force shutting down

A couple times so far, my computer has simply run out of ram and completely froze. I open up force quit and quit a few programs but then it gets a pinwheel of death. I wait for like 5 mins and then I hold the power button for a few seconds so it force shuts down. Ive only had to do this twice, should I be worried about something breaking on my computer from me doing this?

Forcing the computer to shutdown by holding down the power button means that the operating system does not have a chance to tidy up and do the housekeeping normally required prior to turning off. As far as hardware goes you are probably not likely to damage anything (with the exception of point 5 below).
From a software perspective the things that *can* go wrong in this situation are:
recent changes to files or documents that you are working on may not be saved.
the file system on the disk can get partially corrupted meaning whole files or folders can be lost or filled with garbage. Most modern filesystems are fairly good so the probability of loss is low.
if you have a database running on the machine and an update operation is in progress then the update might be lost or the database can get corrupted.
if you are in the middle of a software update then the program can be left in a non-operational state.
if you are in the middle of a firmware update then the entire computer can be left in a non-operational state.
Note that most of the time only option 1 is very likely.

  • Waking from sleep requires Forced Shut Down on two different g4 iBooks

    Two different iBooks, a 12" 1.33 and a 14" 1.42 . Same behaviour on both iBooks.
Each is running 10.4.4, Each has 1g RAM. Neither have any unusual third party software or hacks. Both exhibited this behaviour prior to 10.4.4, and both had 10.4.2 as the original install, then 10.4.3.
Both go to sleep after three hours, display is set not to turn off before then. They will operate properly for days at a time, but approximately once or twice per week they will have gone to sleep normally, the white light blinking. I'll tap the keyboard to wake up, and the white light will stop blinking but nothing else happens. The cd drives don't make their usual start up racket, nor does the hard drive or fan spin up. Only doing a "Forced Shut Down" by holding down the power button and then restarting will bring either one of them back to life.
I have already Reset the PMU several times over the past 6 months with no change in behaviour. I have also reset the PRAM on both units sucesfully, however that also has not changed the behaviour.
Were this happening on only one iBook, I'd consider it a fluke, but having it happen on both a 12" and a 14", and having read of the others with the same isssue leads me to believe that it is not a unique issue, and is either a hardware or software flaw. Since the advice in every one of these complaints has been rest the PMU and Reset the PRAM, and since this has failed to correct the situation, I'm curious as to whether there is anyone on thes Forums that has knowledge of the problem and a proper fix.
As the issue is truly random and can not be duplicated on demand by manually putting the machine to sleep the "geniuses" have as yet not provided a solution. All I would like is an acknowledgement that there is an issue and that there is hopefully a fix in the works. Even just an acknowledgement that, "it sometimes happens" would be helpful.
Sorry for the long rant, but I keep seeing the same issue brought up over and over again, with the same non-solutions. Any other suggestions or clues would be very much appreciated.
    ibook G4 1.33ghz 12, 1.42ghz 14   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Nothing, No one..... So out of the hundreds of thousands or perhaps millions, of iBooks sold in the past year, I somehow managed to snag the only 2 that display this problem. Those odds are staggering. A 12" 1.3G4 and a 14" 1.42G4, purchased two months apart. Both in the original factory state, and they both display the same sleep issue, and yet somehow this is unique to my experience.
The sarcasm is intended, and after having to do a forced restart, and then wasting an hour running tech tools to make sure there are no disk issues for the third time this week, this is getting old. I'm not asking anyone for a magical fix, all I'd like is confirmation that the issue is being investigated and will hopefully, eventually be resolved.
    Thank you......

  • I cant force quiet or relaunch the finder. it says"not responding". Although other apps are running just fine. I've tried restart several times/force shut down several time. I am using a mac book pro retina, Mavericks 10.9.5.Nothing works. Any idea??

How do i quiet finder?i can't force quiet or relaunch finder. it says'  "finder not responding". Therefore I couldn't shut down. I've tried to force shut down & restart several times. but still finder won't quiet. Any idea please???? I am using a macbook pro retina with Mavericks 10.9.5.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/
com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

  • Help! My ipod classic is not working with the new itunes, it has crashed, i went to the apple store and they restore it but when i came home it just freeze itunes and windows to the point of forcing shut down my pc, is a 160gb ipod classic

The guy at the shop told me is an "antique" , i bought it a year ago only and barely used it, i feel lile burned money, ipod classic is my favorite model, any suggestions plzzzz!!!!

Glad 7.7.1 worked for you, I updated itunes on my macbook, and every time i try to sync the music to my ipod classic, it goes for 23 songs and then it freezes and I get "Cannot read or write to this disk", and it ejects it. I tried uninstalling itunes, reinstalling an earlier version (7.6.2) same problem, plus a new issue with itunes. (It was a clean uninstall, btw, I got everything cleaned out, I think, lol). Video's transfer fine. And no good way to get ahold of apple. That's great. If I have no music on my ipod, it's useless. Think they'll give me my money back? (lol)

  • My Computer has been freezing all of a sudden in the last week and i have to keep doing force shut downs!!!

My dad usually helps me fix this stuff, well go figure he is on vacation and a day after he leaves, the computer starts giving me problems. im so angry with it right now i might throw it off my balcony...
The loading icon randomly starts spinning sometimes and wont stop, requiring me to do force shut downs in order to make the computer usable again.  sometimes it does it right away, sometimes it does it after ive been using the computer for a bit... for a while i can switch windows until it completely freezes.  i cant click anything, cant force quit any programs or anything, and i the spinning beachball never goes away!  the computer isn't hot either when it crashes! SO FRUSTRATING! it was perfectly fine until the last week or so. im anything but a computer genious, but i ran the disc utility and it says the drives are fine.  things ive done in the last week.  done the updates that the app store was pestering me with, updated corel painter 12 with the most current patches because that started randomly crashing. well now painter works and its the computer crashing X.x
I dont have extensions on my safari aside from adblock. and i only have 2 apps downloaded and corel painter is the only software on the mac side of the computer.  parallels has an adobe suite on it but Corel is the only thing that has gone through changes recently...
i dont know what to do... i need to work on projects and the computer keeps making me lose progress and keeps giving me frustration. please help if you can...
I've never used the forums before so i don't know the right category, but if its wrong im sorry.  if you can just move it into the right one...

Back up all data immediately, if you haven't already done it.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Since upgrading to Mavericks I have to force shut down to close frozen applications

    Hi all,
Since upgrading to Mavericks I have experienced several times that sometimes when an application close a simple force quit is not enough. The application will disappear from my dock but remain on screen with the spinning ball, and any instances of the application I try to open will also freeze instantly. The only way to clear them is to do a force shut down via the power button on the back of my computer. I have experienced this with Mail, VLC and Finder so I do not think this an issue with a specific program. If anyone is having the same problem or has an idea of how to fix it, it would be much appreciated

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

===== END OF THREAD DUMP ===============

    Hi,
This is a one off issue which occurred when there are thread dumps originating from WLS trying to determine if there are stuck threads in the system.
The upgrade to R28 is pertinent because these code level changes will not be feasible to be backported and that the code level fixes are included in R28.1.1.
Please upgrade the Jrockit version to R28.1.1.
    Mark If this helps you.
    Regards,
    Kishore

Macbook Pro (2011) froze while working, forced shut down, now won't turn on. Grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel for hours. Help?
Unfortunately do not know the operating system since I never updated anything and I can't get in to it.
    Thanks for your assistance.

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Constant Forced Shut-downs due to some sort of kernel panic...

Hi there, I'm currently running OS 10.4.10 and over the past month or so I have been having some serious issues with my macbook making me force shut-down. Most of the time it ocures when i leave my computer for a few minutes. I come back to a screen that is locked up, displaying a message in multiple languages telling me to hold the power button to force shut-down and restart. I called applecare and they told me my phone support was over, however the person I talked to stated that it was a kernel panic. I've searched many things but nothing has really helped. I've tried disk utility, I've tried re-installing 10.4.10 but I still have the issue. Does anyone know what the heck is going on??

    Hi--
Do any of your panic logs have anything in the backtrace section? If so, that would be most helpful to see. Also, do you have any third party drivers installed, like a driver for a mouse or some Firewire or USB peripheral, like an audio interface?
How much RAM do you have? And how many chips? You might have a bad RAM chip that's causing the panics. If you have two chips, try removing one and see if the panics go away. If not, replace it and remove the other chip.
This page has detailed instructions on how to track down a kernel panic. Perhaps it'll help you, but be sure to read it carefully.

  • PB-G4 wont start after  forced shut down

I had to force shut down my PB.when i tried to restart after few minutes | i got Blue screen with nothing else ( no progress spinning wheel or anything)\
I tried to boot from external. I get two arrows and a wrist watch which stops after a minute( the touch pad stops too after a minute)
I tried booting from Apple orignal PB CD. Same as above
I tried to install Tiger X from original CD.It wouldnt.
please help.I have valuable data on my HD.

Try things in Apple doc.#106464 for your startup issue.
Also, try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption. Smokes link will help walk you thru it.
    Cheers!

  • I tried to reload my Ipod touch.  I accidently selected "start new ipod" icon on the Ipod and then "back up existing ipod" on Itunes.  Now the Ipod is unresponsive, constantly shutting down and restarting.  Even after multiple "forced" shut downs.  Help!

After updating the os, I tried to shut down, clear and reload my Ipod touch.  Here's where I goofed:  at the prompt for starting the reload process, I selected "start as new Ipod" on the Ipod, but in Itunes, I selected " back up existing Ipod from computer" or something like that.  Now the ipod is constantly shutting down and restarting and no controls can be accessed.  All I can do is the "forced shut down" which I have done multiple times and let sit for a half hour off.

Disregard,  hooked up to itunes and clicked on summary, selected restore, all is well.

  • Recovering files after a force shut down

    **** all,
My mbp froze up last night and I had to do a forced shut down. When I rebooted all was fine except for a pages document that was open during the freeze was lost. Can this file be recovered?
    Thanks,
    Brian

I don't know if Pages periodically saves to a temp file, but if it does, that temp file should be in a Recovered Files folder in your trash can. If it's not there, or if you emptied your trash and got rid of that Recovered Files folder, then you're out of luck. Any unsaved changes are gone.

Well, if the internal hard drive  is no longer readable, there's pretty much nothing anyone here can do about it. There are no magic words that will fix a hardware problem.
Make an appointment at the genius bar and have it looked at.

  • Macbook pro froze during partition. after force shut down it, a part of hard drive lost

2011 15' Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion.
I was trying to use Bootcamp to install windows. Somehow I got confused and used disk utility to partition my hard drive and get 100gb for windows (before that it was 500 gb with 260gb free). And after 10 minutes the computer froze and I could do nothing but force shut down it. Rebooted and disk utility shows that it has 160 gb free space now. I repaired disk and permissions but none of them worked.
How can I get my 100 gb back? Help pls
    Thanks
