Forever installing and backing up

Ok so I do have tons of apps, almost a gig. but anyway why does it take about an hour and a half to two hours to do an iPhone backup.
Also when updating an app the transfer doesnt take too long but the installing takes a HUGE amount of time. So far the one thats installing now is almost two hours!!! its only a 20 MB file
Any ideas? or reasons.

The number and nature of your apps are the cause of the lengthy backup. Personally, with ~15 apps, my backups take ~1 minute. Removing the language/phrasebook apps substantially decreased my backup times.
Details on what's backed up are here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Assuming you are talking about the Mac OS (your profile is out of date, lists 10.4.8, and you must be running at least 10.4.10), the backups are stored in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup - the folders have unique names, but you can go by the modified dates to match up to backups listed in iTunes Preferences > Syncing.

  • SSD install and back up OS

I'd like to install ssd on my macbook pro 13 mid 2009.
Can I back up ( using time machine) with ssd which I am about to installing and install directly to my macbook to switch old hard disk?
So I don't have to install os (currently Lion installed) or do I still have to reinstall os?

No. The Time Machine backup will not be bootable.
To do what you want you need a clone which can be do with Restore in Disk Utility.
If you clone your system disk to the SSD then you need not install.
Of course this means that you will need an external enclouse to hook the SSD up to create the clone.

  • Bought 3.0 Update, went to install and back up appears... it's been hours!

I bought the 3.0 update last night and once I downloaded it then went to install it says that it is backing up my ipod touch. my itouch ended up getting disconnected so i tried again at noon today. my itouch isn't even half way at backing up and it is already 8:45pm. is there a way that i can just get the 3.0 software update without having to sit through the backing up? i feel as though it will never be done. i could really care less about having any of the stuff saved from the back up.

First off, why are you posting this question in the Mac forum? You only needed to post it once as more frequently will not help to get it answered any faster. Someone will help you when they think they have something to offer.
Are you by chance running any of the commercial internet protection suites like Norton or Mcafee? Disable you firewall and anti-virus for the upgrade. During the upgrade process, your computer needs to access the Apple servers to complete the install and your security package is no friend at this point.
Even if you are running ZoneAlarm, you might wish to disable it.

  • On 3 machines now the Windows Store is broken. The Install and Back buttons don't work

    Advised to post here instead.
    Hi there
On three separate Windows 8.1 Professional machines now, I've had an issue where the Store stops working properly for no apparent reason (no error messages or anything).  The store opens, and I can browse apps, and view individual apps, but
once in the app view I cannot click on the Install button or the back buttons.
They "light up" as if being pressed, but they don't actually do anything.
I've tried all the various troubleshooting, including the Windows App troubleshooter, wsreset, re-registering the store files using powershell, and renaming the cache folder in my user profile. No effect.
If I sign into the PCs as another user, then I don't get the issue. As such something is getting corrupted in the profile.
We only have around 9 or 10 Windows 8.1 PCs deployed at our organisation for testing, and three of them have had this fault, which doesn't inspire confidence. As such, we cannot progress with further deployment until we have a fix in place that
doesn't involve wiping the user profile.
    Any ideas please?

    Hi FangZhou CHEN
I've discovered the cause of this error after much searching.
Based on your suggestion, I checked the Event Viewer and found a string of "Application Error" entries similar to this:
Faulting application name: WSHost.exe, version: 6.3.9600.17093, time stamp: 0x534765e9
Faulting module name: sxwmon64.dll, version: 4.5.2608.0, time stamp: 0x52b2a853
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x00000000000257ff
    Faulting process id: 0xf40
    Faulting application start time: 0x01cfeeb1cc6d035e
    Faulting application path: C:\WINDOWS\WinStore\WSHost.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sxwmon64.dll
    Report Id: 19ee9a1c-5aa5-11e4-8259-600292638f85
    Faulting package full name:
    Faulting package-relative application ID:
Presumably the WSHost, exe process is critical to the Store and "Metro" apps?
The offending dll file causing this process to fail, sxwmon64.dll belongs to a peice of security software on our machines called Lumension Endpoint Security (we're running version 4.5 SR2). We use this to control removable media (USB) and CDRW access for
    our employees.
If I rename that particular DLL file, the store and the calendar app which I was also having issues with (it was blank), spring back into life.

  • Tiger to Snow Leopard install and back up help

Hi all. First off I am a complete noob when it comes to Mac.
I recently purchased a new imac with Snow Leopard and have been enjoying learning it.
Out of the blue I had an opportunity to buy a late 2006 Macbook at a great price so I went for it. Its a Intel based Mac using Tiger.
I want to upgrade this OS to Snow Leopard and need some guidance.
I have done some research and have determined that I should be able to do this by purchasing the $30 disc rather than the box set with ilife.
I am a bit confused regarding the back up and install procedure however.
After buying the macbook I successfully upgraded the hard drive from the 80gig to a 320 gig using the free download of Super Duper to clone the entire drive. There are a lot of YouTube videos and post outlining this and it went without any problem.
(there doesn't seem to be as much info for upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard out there plus I have read some people have had problems)
So I need a back up and install plan.
Can I use Super Duper for this? It seems to me that cloning would duplicate everything including the Tiger OS so I would expect that there may be conflicts? Or does Super Duper have another copying function.(it does not have any help files)
Here is what I have to work with.
The original 80 gig HD and an enclosure. A new untouched 500 gig external drive.
Original Tiger install disc's and soon to be purchased Snow Leopard disc.
FYI the Macbook has no personal files or 3rd party apps that I need to keep. I have only done test uploads of pictures and video to test the all the ports and drives etc.
I do however need to keep all the included apps like iphoto, tunes etc .especially imovie 06 HD
A bit off topic but if successful I want to download imovie 11 but still keep 06 HD. Can I use both on the same machine?
    Thanks

The reason to back up is so when you do the installation of the new system if anything goes wrong you can back out of it. Is your backup drive bootable? Although technically almost all models are if you cloned the internal, some Western Digital enclosures aren't. See if the external shows up as a boot alternative in Startup disks preferences, and actually try booting from it.
So let's say you have a bootable clone of your internal on the external. You can now just update the OS on the internal using your SL disc. If all goes well it should only replace system files. If there is a problem you can always clone your external back to the internal and start over.
I don't know about 2 versions of iMovie. I don't use it but in general those more involved applications don't like multiple versions. In particular the new version might want to overwrite the preferences file for the old version, which the old version subsequently would baulk at using. There may also be plugin version issues, etc. I'd post this as a separate question on the iMovie forum.

  • Forever preparing and never backing up

First... thanks in advance for any help!
Like the title says... all my Time Machine seems to want to do is forever prepare and never actually back up to the time machine disk. My last back up was Nov 18 and that was perfect, but now I can not. I took this out of the system.log:
    Nov 25 09:44:43 mybook /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[476]: Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonEventDBUntrustable|
    Any suggestions?

The "preparing" stage in Time Machine is usually fast, because Time Machine uses a log of file system activities to know where to find changes that need to be backed up.
But there are things you can do to make that log untrustworthy. When Time Machine discovers the log MIGHT not be valid, it does a full scan of your file system to determine what really needs to be backed up. This can take a while. On my Powerbook (and with a firewire external Time Machine drive) it can result in a "preparing" stage that lasts 20 minutes. If you let Time Machine continue, it will eventually figure out what really needs to be added to the backup disk and will continue. This, of course, is better than just gambling the log is correct or just backing up EVERYTHING again even though only a few files might actually have changed (which would take much longer and consume more Time Machine disk space).
In these early days of Leopard installs, one of the most common things you can do that will make the log untrustworthy is booting from the Leopard install DVD. Each time you do that, the next time Time Machine runs it will discover that your hard drive MIGHT have been modified without the changes being reflected in the log. So it does the full scan -- a long "preparing" stage -- to insure it gets things right.

    Hi all,

My old desktop PC has been used to sync and back-up my iPhone4.
However, when I installed itunes on the new laptop and tried to sync the iphone I got the message
"iPhone can only be synced with one iTunes library"
How can designate my new laptop as the one wheer I can sync and back-up my iPhone?
    Old PC: Windows XP
    New PC: Windows 7
Can somebody please send me step by step guide as im a novice with PC/iTunes
    Hope somebody can help.
    Thanks in advance.
    Bhav P

It will clear the phone. You need to restore the backup you made of your important files from the old computer (surely no one in the third millennium who uses a computer does not back it up regularly).
You can recover iTunes-purchased music, videos and apps from the phone, but not music from other sources. Connect the phone, do not sync, and choose "Transfer Purchases" from the File menu.
Photos in the Camera Roll can be transferred buy using the Camera Wizard on your computer.
Contacts and Calendar can be synced with apps on your computer; just make sure there is at least one entry in each app on the computer before syncing.
You are out of luck if you have photos in the Photo app on the phone; there are apps for your computer that can extract them, but they will be lower resolution than originals because they have been optimized for the iPhone's resolution.

Don't recall the exact wording. But it is the same in appearance as others.  Anyway, problem solved using RogerWilmut1 reply to someone else.  I opened Applications and got the icon back.  Thanks for responding.

    This doesn't make any sense.
powering off your phone and back on won't make you lose apps or pictures.
Are you restoring your phone from an icloud backup?

When your data (everywhere- computer, phone, pad) deleted you normally restore it from back up. Find if and where you backed it up and restore from that backup.

The notice is inserted first and the stopping point is second.
