Form feed, null and StringTokenizer

is form feed recognized as null when using the StringTokenizer?
i currently have my StringTokenizer set with a blank space and i am attempting to read until the value is (EOF) null and while it hasMoreTokens. the text file that i am reading from spans across several pages. my code falls out of my loop when it hits the last space on my first page.

a form feed (\f) is not a null but that shouldn't be stopping the StringTokenizer, I suspect that the manner in which you're reading in the data may be the culprit. Try to use the BufferedReader class to read your file.

  • Please explain me how I can use Form feed(\f) and Carriage return(\r)

    what is Form feed(\f) and Carriage return(\r)?
    Please explain to me.
    Thank you.

    These control characters aren't used much these days except that if you example a Windows or MSDOS text file in a binary editor you'll find each line ends with "\r\n". However when reading or writing text through classes these carriage returns will be added and removed automatically so your program doesn't see them.
    The controlls date back to teletype machines which operated rather like typewriters. Cariage return, as it's name implied, caused the print head to move back to the start of the line, line feed advanced a line (without, necessarilly, returning the carriage) and formfeed skipped to the next page.
    Newline on these machines was always "return, linefeed" because executing the carriage return on these machine could take too long. The early machines had only a single character buffer so that they had to executed the characters as quickly as they arrived. So doing the linefeed after the carriage return gave the carriage more time to return. On some teletypes if you did "linefeed, return" then the first character of the new line would often be printed somewhere in the middle of the line.
    This is the origin of the MSDOS/Windows end of line sequence.
    Many printers will still respect formfeed if printing is direct. Some will take carriage return without linefeed to allow you to start again overprinting the same line.
    However printing, these days, is seldom direct but done in bitmap form.

  • How do I insert a form feed character in my XSLT?

    I need to finish a transformation with a form feed character and when I use I get an invalid character exception.
 works OK so I guess the syntax is in the correct form but how do I use it for a form feed character (page break)?

    If you know the decimal unicode value for the character you want (which for ASCII characters is the same as the ASCII code for it), just use:
    <xsl:text>&#NNNN;</xsl:text>
    where NNNN is the decimal number. For example, in insert a tab character (number 8), just do:
    <xsl:text>&#8;</xsl:text>
    If you only know the value in hex, you can use the syntax:
    <xsl:text>&#xHHHH;</xsl:text>
    Where HHHH is the hex value.

  • Not null and enable or disable  column in tabular form

    Hi,
    Using apex version 4.1 and working on tabular form.
    ACT_COA_SEGMENT_MAS is Master table
    and
    ACT_SEGMENT_VALUES_MAS is detail table
    I have entered 8 rows in master table and PARENT_SEGMENT_ID is column in master table which is null able. If i specified PARENT_SEGMENT_ID with value in master table then in detail table there is column PARENT_ID that should not be null and enable.
    How i can enable or disable column when in master table PARENT_SEGMENT_ID column is null then in detail table PARENT_ID column should disable and vice versa.
    I have created tabular form on Detail table. before insert into the tabular form Check in master table in first entry if PARENT_SEGMENT_ID is not null in first row of master table then in tabular form PARENT_ID should enable and not null able in corresponding to this first row id's lines in tabular form.
    Same should check for second row in master table if PARENT_SEGMENT_ID is not null then entered rows with PARENT_ID into tabular form corresponding to 2nd id in master table should not nullable and column should enable in tabular form.
    Thanks & Regards

    Vedant,
    You need to create you own manual tabular form and not use the wizard.
    Using APEX_ITEM api you should be build you own form and you will be able to control how you wan to display the rows. (See Link [Apex Item Help|http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E37097_01/doc/doc.42/e35127/apex_item.htm#CACEEEJE] )
    select case when PRIMARY_TABLE_COLUMN is null then APEX_ITEM.DISPLAY_AND_SAVE(3 , DETAIL_COLUMN ) else APEX_ITEM.TEXT(2,detail_column) end "ALIAS" from detail table
    Hope that help.

  • "We had difficulty reading this feed. null" Atom feeds no longer work?

    Hi - our Audioboo feeds used to work fine when submitting as a podcast (eg http://audioboo.fm/users/4705/boos.atom). It seems like they stopped working recently - maybe in the past couple of days - and just report "We had difficulty reading this feed. null" when you try to submit them.
    I'm beginning to suspect that the use of atom rather than rss is the cause. Can anyone confirm?
    -Jonathan

    This feed can be subscribed to manually in iTunes (from the 'Advanced' menu) - actually I'm rather surprised it works because it isn't a valid podcast feed (though it is a valid Atom feed).
    It has the iTunes 'declaration' and some itunes tags, although the former is contained in a 'feed' tag whereas it should be a 'rss' tag: there is no 'channel' tag enclosing the podcast data, no 'item' tags enclosing each episode, and no 'enclosure' tags within each episode containing the media URL. I'm not surprised you can't submit it as a podcast, and as I say it's a but surprising that the iTunes application recognizes it.
    In order to get it accepted in the iTunes Store you need to create a feed in the correct format: this page contains a sample basic feed so you can see how it should look:
    http://www.wilmut.org.uk/pc
    If the feed contains the valid iTunes format it can also contain atom tags, which iTunes will ignore.

  • Union two tables with diffrent count of fields with null and float value

    Hello,
    i want to union two tables, first one with 3 fields and second one with 4 fields (diffrent count of fields).
    I can add null value at end of first select but it does not work with float values in second table. Value form second table is convert to integer.
    For example:
    select null v1 from sessions
    union
    select 0.05 v1 from sessions
    result is set of null and 0 value.
    As workaround i can type:
    select null+0.0 v1 from sessions
    union
    select 0.05 v1 from sessions
    or simple change select's order.
    Is any better/proper way to do this? Can I somehow set float field type in first select?
    Best regards,
    Lukasz.
    WIN XP, MAXDB 7.6.03

    Hi Lukasz,
    in a UNION statement the first statement defines the structure (number, names and types of fields) of the resultset.
    Therefore you have to define a FLOAT field in the first SELECT statement in order to avoid conversion to VARCHAR.
    Be aware that NULL and 0.0 are not the same thus NULL+0.0 does not equal NULL.
    In fact NULL cannot equal to any number or character value at all.
    BTW: you may want to use UNION ALL to avoid the search and removal of duplicates - looks like your datasets won't contain duplicates anyhow...
    Regards,
    Lars

  • ON-ERROR trigger fires with Error_Type null and Error_Code 0

    We've recently seen our 6i Forms application throwing some odd errors, not least of which is when an alert popped up with just "-0:" displayed.
    This seems to come from the ON-ERROR trigger.
    DECLARE
       lv_errcod  NUMBER       := ERROR_CODE;
       lv_errtyp  VARCHAR2(3)  := ERROR_TYPE;
       lv_errtxt  VARCHAR2(80) := ERROR_TEXT;

        Display_Alert(lv_errtyp||'-'||to_char(lv_errcod)||': '||lv_errtxt);
        RAISE Form_Trigger_Failure;
      END IF;
    END;At least there's nowhere else that could be doing it. It seems that error_type and error_text are null and error_code is 0
    It's as if the ON-ERROR trigger has fired but there isn't an error. Anyone ever experienced this? It's been ported to a VM environment but ran perfectly fine for 6 months and has only started doing this in the last few days.
    It's also occasionally saying that queries return no results when the users KNOW there are records, and if they log out completely and log back in the records are returned, which is doing nothing for their confidence in the application.
    It's entirely possible that one of the teams responsible for various parts of the VM environment or network, or even the DBAs, has done something that caused it but we're unlikely to get them to admit it without knowing what it could be. I would expect a dropped connection or network issue to give an appropriate error, not freak out.

    Edited by: Dave Hemming on Jul 22, 2010 9:49 AM

    Bit of a breakthrough - we had it again and it appears to then be followed - depending on which form they're in - by an ORA-02396 and an error that built-in DBMS_ERROR_CODE has failed. We are now suspecting that it's down to the Idle Time for the profile - the users session has been dropped but the form hasn't realised it's not connected. It looks like the users idle time has been amended from UNLIMITED to 90 in the last few days.
    Nobody thought it important to tell us, mind...

    Hi,
              I have a page jsp which contains a form. This form contains an action

              I configured struts-config.xml file in whom I put a configuration of

              it.
              During the execution it show that it tries to instantiate a bean of form
              corresponding to a configuration of action and post this error message
              " Root causes of ServletException javax.servlet.jsp. JspException:
              Cannot retrieve definition for form bean null "
              Could you indicate to me where is the problem ?
              Here is my configuration :
              < html:form action = " page.do " method = " post " >
              </html:form >
              <action path="/page"
              type="xxx.pageAction">

              </action>
              Thanks in advance
              Rachid.

    There's little reason to use Struts infrastructure to set this up since you have no model, and the controller aspect is well-defined (just go to "NewProject"!). You're basically providing a link from one page to another, akin to doing an <a href>, and you wouldn't use Struts to do a simple link :).
    I would just just use standard HTML.
    If you're okay with using Javascript, this is the simplest:
    <input type="button" onClick="document.location='NewProject'">
    Or you can use a standard HTML form, as you've basically done already:
    <form action="NewProject" method="get">
    <input type="submit" value="Create">
    </form>

    Hi all - I searched for this but found nothing that fit my problem although various other problems came up.
    I have a Login jsp, with a simple form for username and password:

                </tr>
              </table>
              </form>Nothing complex in that form. my hidden field is actionCode and it should pass a 0 to my ControlServlet servlet.
    Here is a snippet from my servlet:
    import java.io.* ;
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.servlet.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;
    public class ControlServlet extends HttpServlet {
      public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request,

        response.setContentType("text/html");
                //get the printwriter to output for debugging
                PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
                //read in form variables
            //String formUsername = request.getParameter("username");
            //String formPassword = request.getParameter("password");
            String action = request.getParameter("actionCode");
            //convert String to int for action
            //int actionInt = Integer.parseInt(action);
            //add action variable to request
            request.setAttribute("aktion", action);
                //debug point 1
                //use requestDispatcher to forward session info to JSP
               RequestDispatcher dispatcher =
               request.getRequestDispatcher("/mvcoutput.jsp");
               dispatcher.forward(request, response);I have commented out a bit for debugging purposes, but basically, the form variables are read in, the username and password don't give me any problems, but the actionCode does. Upon forwarding to a basic jsp for testing my output displays value "null" when using the command:
    request.getAttribute("aktion")Any reason why the hidden field is playing silly buggers ??
    cheers

    Anyone ???
    If I have a field in an html form which is hidden, do I retrieve it in the SAME WAY that I retrieve the non hidden form fields i.e. using the request.getParameter() method ??
    Cheers.

  • HP P1606dn network printer spools jobs but won't print without a "form feed"

    I recently changed by HP P1606dn printer from a USB connection to my HP desktop running Windows 7 (64bit) to a network connection.  The objective was to allow my Mac (OS 10.6.8) to print to this printers as well via the network.
    When I first installed the printer it worked fine.  Then I installed the HP drivers on the Mac, and it too worked fine and continues to work fine.  However, my Windows 8 desktop stopped printing.  It appears to spool the print jobs correctly and they show up in the queue as actively printing.  However, the only way to get them out is to go over to the printer and press the "form feed" button (button showing page with down arrow).  Then the HP test page will come out followed by the desired print job.
    I've tried disabling "bi-directional support" in the "ports" tab under "printer properties" but that did not help.
    Any helpful advice appreciated!

    Ah, I thought he was saying Java doesn't support ringing the bell.

  • Printing via Airport Express:  Missing Final Form Feed

    Maybe a guru could help with this one...
    Spooling a print job from an iMac G5 to an HP Photosmart 7150 that is connected to the Airport Express USB port...
    The job prints fine but I don't get a FINAL FORMFEED after the last page has printed. I have to manually eject...
    The iMac has the latest OS Update (10.4.2) and all the drivers for system software (including Airport 4.2 for Mac OS X 10.4.2). The printer driver is from HP's support site - version 2.5.6 (August 2005) for Mac OX X v10.2, 10.3 & 10.4.
    Note: the printer works fine (final form feed & all) when you have it attached directly to the iMac.

    Hi Ian and welcome to the Discussions.
    According to HP the PhotoSmart 7150 is not compatible with the Airport base station, which implies that it will not work across a network when connected to an Airport Express as it would when directly connected.
    It may work as you want with a third-party driver such as the HPIJS drivers and the process outlined here: http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1300.html

    In our old app, the Form Feed character (ASCII 12) was invisible naturally without having to code around it. In a JTextArea, it appears as a "[]" character. Does anyone know how to make this character invisible to the JTextArea? Removing it is not an option, as it is needed for it's print routine.
    I've been searching these forums and the web all morning with no luck.

    Not sure how the Form Feed character worksIt lets the printer know that a new page is to be started at that point.
    Does it always appear with the New Line character?Usually but not always.
    Thanks for the reply. It's more involved than just printing standard lines of text, so perhaps I should have been more clear.
    The C report already has pagination built in from when it was run from our legacy GUI. In other words, each report knows how many chars wide and how many lines down each page will be. It is different for each report, but they all hover around 150 chars wide and 60 lines down per page, since they are all presented to the user (and printed) in landscape.
    In the C code: at the end of each report line a "\n" is appended. At the end of each page, an ASCII 12 character is appended. A header is at the top of each page (different for each report, but usually 2 or 3 lines) that shows the page # and other info.
    So, as you are viewing the report, you would see page 1 header, some report content, page 2 header, some more report content, page 3 header, etc. as you scroll down.
    So now if you view it in Java: if the user wishes to print, the report is sent to our ReportPrinter class, who tokenizes the report based on "\f" and makes a ReportPage object (implements Printable) for each token. Each ReportPage is then appened to a java.awt.print.Book object, who in turn is sent to the PrinterJob.
    Given that the report already has his pages figured out and has a form feed char at the end of each page, the report comes in to the JTextArea with [] chars preceding each page header (approximately every 60th line, depending on the report).
    I tried using a JTextPane, but no luck. It was also much slower reading in the report. I just want the textpane to not display the non-printable characters ("\f" in this case).
