Formatting 3rd Gen ipod from Mac to Windows

Hello.
I need to format a 3rd Gen iPod from Mac to windows for my Father in Law.
So please can anyone tell what the process is?
Many thanks,

The iPod is formatted for both PC and Mac, I used to use mine with a PC, bought a Mac, plugged it in and it worked with the Mac no problem. I'm not sure that this works both ways though, if you're having problems you could try this link for help: http://ipod.about.com/od/restoreandreformatipod/a/ipod_reformat.htmhttp://

  • How do I change my Ipod from mac to windows format??

How do I change my Ipod from mac to windows format?? My Imac is not working at the moment, but I want to use my Ipod on my PC. How do I get my Ipod(mac formated) to get work on my PC??

Use iTunes on the PC to restore the iPod, or install XPlay on the PC without changing the format. Restoring the iPod will erase everything on it.

  • Hooking Up Windows Formatted 3rd Gen iPod To New Macbook

    Hi guys
I have a 3rd Gen iPod which I was using with my windows pc. I have now bought a macbook and wanted to know can I use the iPod with it?
I tried installing the installer cd on the mac but it said something about requiring some networking plug in.
Also can one single iPod used with both PC and Mac?
What do I need to do?

Macs can read Windows formatting so you just need to connect your iPod to start using the iTunes library. However if your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your new computer and a different iTunes. If it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys, (on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer.
To keep your iPod Windows formatted you'll have to carry out any software updates or restores from the PC. Updating or restoring on the Mac will change the formatting.

  • Need Help Converting iPod from Mac to Windows

Hi, I have a 3rd Gen iPod and I just gave it to my friend who has a windows xp machine. I had a Mac OS 10.3.9 system. When he plugged the iPod into his windows, it told him that it needed to be configured to windows and that he should connect it to a power adapter. When he did this, the iPod just gave an icon resembling the plug that connects to the bottom of the iPod. Now his iPod won't turn on and when plugged into his computer, it says that there has been a malfunction and his computer does not recognize the USB device. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

That generation iPod requires a combo USB/Firewire cable. It simply won't work with USB alone. It also needs to be re-formated for Windows and that can be done within iTunes. Along with that cable, he will need the A/C power adapter.

  • 4th Gen iPod from Mac to PC

I have a quick question (perhaps). I have a 40GB 4th Gen iPod (non color) that I would like to give to my brother. I am a Mac, he's a PC (just like the commercial). If he connects it to his PC, will iTunes recognize the device and will he be able to pull the music off of my device (previously used on my Mac) to his PC? Then he would be able to reformat the ipod and resync it. Or is this simply not possible. Thanks for any insight into this issue.

Ok, you know what, I just read a previous poster who was wondering how to keep music from a second hand used iPod. This is not the case with what I am asking. I know I can share my iTunes library with him and give him access to play the songs, just curious if he could pull them off of my iPod, then use it for himself. Thanks!

A Mac formatted iPod can't be used on a Windows pc without the aid of 3rd party software because Windows is incapable of reading Mac formatted drives.
One such program is MacDrive 7.
Other than that, the iPod will have to be reformatted for use on Windows, and thus erase the contents in the process.

  • Reformatting ipod from Mac to Windows without losing all my music

Can someone please tell me what software i need that will enable me to Reformat my 5th generation ipod from a Mac to Windows without losing all the music on my ipod. I tried xpod but that did not work. I also entered my ipods hard drive via a friends Mac and copied the files onto his Mac but although the file is clearly the right one in terms of file size when i click into it it does not display the music contained within it???? Please help

Sounds like you first need to get the stuff OFF your iPod and onto a hard drive on your friends Mac first...

  • How do I save tracks in order to format ipod from Mac to windows?

I have been given an ipod that was originally used on a Mac but i have Windows. Is there any way I can save the tracks before formatting it ?
When i plug in the ipod to my computer it only gives me the option of formatting it.
There are some 11 g's of music and i can't bear to lose it.
If backed up the music on a Mac could I then re-load the tracks from it once the ipod has been formatted for Windows?

"if backed up the music on a Mac could I then re-load the tracks from it once the ipod has been formatted for Windows?"
Yes you could, Macs can read Windows formatted iPods. If you only have the songs on the iPod, and have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac. The procedure is a bit involved but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. • Switching ipod from mac to windows

I previously used my iPod with my Mac and Powerbook. Now I have purchased a PC. My computer recognizes my iPod but none of my songs appear under my iPod. What's wrong? Any help appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Nothing is wrong. As the other poster said, since your iPod was previously setup with a Mac, it is in Mac format. Your new PC will not be able to read your iPod as it is.
There are 2 possible ways to make your iPod work with your PC:
    (1) Restore the iPod using the Windows version of the iPod software updater. This will erase everything on your iPod including your previous songs but the iPod will then be readable by your PC. Note that you have to install iTunes first, and then the iPod software updater. Download them from the given links if you do not have them.
    (2) Get some special third party programs such as Xplay, which allows you to read your Mac formatted iPod directly with your PC. You can then access the songs on your iPod. The software is not free, however.
What do you want to do?

  • Ipod from mac to Window

    Hi everyone,
I have an Ipod program on a macintosh computer. Now I don't have anymore this computer I have presently a window PC. I want to format my Ipod on my new cumputer without losing all my files and songs. Is it possible.
    Thanks for your answers,

HFS Explorer should let you get access to the files on the device, after which this section from my previous post will tell you how to extract the files and get them into a usable iTunes library.
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

I've had my my iPod Nano formatted for Mac and now I want to reformat it for use in Windows. I've tried using the iTunes "Restore" feature but keep getting an error message that reads, "The iPod software update server could not be contacted." • Reconfigure iPod from mac to Windows detrimental?

Have: video iPod, G4 w/current iTunes library, new PC
Don't have: DVD burner, network for the 2 computers.
Trying to get iTunes library from G4 to PC. Would like to use iPod as hard disk, but configured to mac. Can I reconfigure iPod to Windows for the transfer or will that adversely affect iPod long-term?
With no network connection, DVD burner, or other storage (external hard disk, flash, etc.) Is the only other option to burn CD's for transfer?

    1. Reformat your iPod as FAT32 with Disk Utility.
    2. Move your iTunes Music folder to your iPod in the Finder (Default is Home->Music->iTunes).
    3. Import your music into your PC's iTunes library (using "Add to library..." in iTunes). Make sure it's copying the music from your iPod to your PC's hard disk, which it should do by default but I'm not certain.
    4. Plug your iPod back into your Mac and reformat as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    Hope that works.

What is the error message? Have you been through the steps in the following links?
USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date.
iTunes 7 or later doesn't recognize the iPod.
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod
iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes.
iPod does not appear in iTunes.

  • Can I use my 4th gen iPod on Mac AND Windows computer?

My main household computer is a Mac. It also contains our main iTunes Library, and everything else. However, when I went to hook up my iPod to my HP mini (net book), my iTunes and my laptop both said that I had to format my iPod before I could use it on that computer. Why is this? I did not have to do so with my iTouch. Is there a way around this? I really would like to transfer my purchased songs onto the net book, but I cannot access the iPod at all with out formatting it.

Install the MacDrive trial, or if you just want to transfer the songs, use a network connection or a drive other than the iPod to do it.

  • Trying to reformat ipod from mac to windows but it won't even sync on the computer to do so

also i can't restore it because of this
occasionally it will show up on the screen and say something like drive needs to be repaired, then says this is successful but its not. ipod screen will say something like connected but won't show up on itunes
i think i rather naively tried to reformat and have broken it. its kind of broken by itself like sometimes it resets its own date

    - Try another cable
