Formatting mac os 10.4.11

I need to format my macbook and start all over again as my computer has got so slow of late! i have the two dvds needed for this operation but does anyone know how exactly to format a macbook? thanks

I trust you realize that by reformatting and reinstalling the OS you are erasing the disk and hopefully you are backed up. You can boot to your OS installer disk 1 by inserting it and restarting holding down the 'c' key. Select your language and then select Disk Utility from the utilities menu. Select your hard drive and then select Erase tab. Do one pass. Then you can install the OS. Once you have finished and you've set up your MacBook again (once when it was new) you can proceed with all the updates to the OS using Software Update. Then you are ready to reinstall your third party programs and install back your files.

Not necessarily. I'd suggest downloading and installing the "combo" update. That's a combination (thus the clever name) of all the updates to Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

Try to b boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down). If you can you can select Disk Utility to erase the hard drive and then reinstall Mavericks.

  • HT4589 How can I get my Mac laptop FCPX Events Library to see my external drives? Yes it is formatted Mac-OS-Extended (Journaled)

How can I get my Mac laptop FCPX Events Library to see my external drives? Yes it is formatted Mac-OS-Extended (Journaled).

I do not seem to have that as an option. Attached is a screen shot with the gear popup open. I simply copied the event and projct folders from my desktop so I could contiue working while on a trip with my laptop.

  • Hello. I keep my IPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled). Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Howtoresolve?

Hello. I keep my iPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) and both check out when scanned with Disk Utility. Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Any ideas how to  resolve? Also, what's the maximum recommended size for an iPhoto library file? Thx!

Since you can't drag the library to the other EHD for the backup see if you can duplicate it (if you have enough room on the drive) by selecting it and typing Command+d (duplicate).
If you do rebuild the library without a backup and it goes awry you won't lose your photos but you may lose your orgnaizational efforts. So try the following:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library in the location of your choosing  based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
NOTE:  Fix 2 above might be the method you might want to try first with iPLM creating the new library on your second EHD. If it works that would get your backup copy on the second EHD at the same time as repairing it. If it does'nt work then go back to Fix 1.

  • Format: Mac OS Extended

Hi. I'm new to iTunes and have started burning CDs. I'm burning as Audio CD because I want them to be universally playable on any CD player. But when I check the file under Get Info, Kind:= Volume, Format:= Mac OS Extended. What is this format and will it be universally recognized?
Also, how do I know the burn is good? When I try to play the CD to check it, the file launches from iTunes. The only alternative was to trash the iTunes file and then play the CD. Is there a better way?
I am copying these spoken word files from CDs which are labelled AIFF. The import setting has been at AAC Encoder which doesn't seem to cause problems, but should I be importing under AIFF Encoder? Does it matter?
I am sending these CDs out by mail and may never know if the lectures can be heard on a regular player. Do I risk a bad copy by using the default Max. Speed and will I be informed of failure? I am planning to make multiple copies of each original CD I have and want some way to verify they are good before mailing them. I've searched Help, etc., but these basic questions don't seem to be addressed. Thanks, Alex.

No relation, except that we share the same first name.
As Mac OS Extended is not listed as a format choice here, does this result from choosing as a 'Data CD or DVD' ?
That is correct. The format of a 'real' Audio-CD will be recognized by the Finder as
    b Audio CD
Also, does it sound right that these AIFF CDs that I import as AAC and then burn, end up being about one tenth the file size
Whit the default settings of iTunes that is about true for
    b importing only.
Lower bitrates means smaller files and lesser audio quality, higher bitrates means larger files and better audio quality.
Is the compression that great with AAC? If so then I assume I could put 8 or 10 lectures on an Audio CD.
Unfortunately not. When iTunes (or another burning program) burns an
    b Audio CD
, all files, wether they are MP3 or AAC or...., are converted to AIFF.
That means that they're expanded to meet the specifications of an audio CD.
So, time is the limiting factor, not file sizes.
The only way to fit more 'time' on a CD is, to burn it as MP3 CD.
And most regular players don't accept those.
Could this high factor of compression ~10:1, be a result of what the file info calls 'Profile: Low Complexity' -i.e. the software recognizes it is non-continuous data - simple speech as opposed to a symphony orchestra?
Speech is indeed of low complexity. The human ear can hear frequencies from about 20 to 20,000 Hz (dependent of the age). Children can even hear lower and higher freqs.
The sound of a symphony orchestra produces about all those frequencies and even lower an higher freqs.
    That's pretty complex.
The 'reach' of a human voice fits the range from about 300 - 3,000 Hz, so that is indeed of low complexity.
    Hope that answers your questions.

Btw. I'm not an audio expert, so I expect others to correct me if I'm wrong.

  • How do I format Mac mail for gmail

How do I format Mac mail for gmail?

You really have no way of controlling how the email will look on someone else's computer. I find, with email, the simpler the better. Block paragraphs (no indent on the first line) and an extra line between paragraphs.
If you want formatting control, I'd recommend using a word processor, printing to PDF and sending that.
    Best of luck.

  • External Drive Format - Mac Extended vs Fat32

    Hi
There seems to be a general consensus that if you are saving iMovie projects to an external hard disk, the format must be Mac Extended (Journaled).
There is an Apple support article from July 2003 saying that this is the case.
However I have experimented, testing an imovie 6 project saved on both a Mac Extended partition and a Fat32 partition on my external drive.
    Both appear to run perfectly.
Does anyone know whether the article / idea that iMovie needs Mac Extended format is out of date? Has subsequent releases of iMovie fixed the issue with using Fat32?
Any experiences/thoughts anyone? I'd ideally prefer to keep my external as all Fat32 seeing as I want to swap files with my PC.....

Why not partition the drive, one partition Mac OS Extended, one partition Fat32, as suggested in another thread?
BTW, I wouldn't rely on your experience storing an iMovie project on a Fat32 drive to prove much of anything. If Apple says not to use it, I wouldn't use it. There's no way any one of us can test all the conditions that can and will arrise.
One such condition, if memory serves, is that large clips — longer than 20 minutes — do not import correctly with Fat32. Something about a 4GB limit, if I recall. Users have reported other problems too. A search for "Fat32" in the iMovie forums should reveal several.

  • Error code 0 even with disk formatted Mac OS Extended

    Hi Guys
I always make "manual backups" (copy files and folders from iMac to External HD's) and this means overwriting existing files and folders on the external HD's all the time.
Now many files are bigger than 4GB but only when I select a large amount of folders and files at the same time, to paste them on the external HD's, I get the "error code 0"...
I reformatted the drives to Mac OS Journaled etc. but it didn't work
What to do know? This freaks me out!!
    Many thanks
    Bob

    1) I copy a folder from my desktop to my external hd which is formatted as mentioned above. When I overwrite the existing folder on the external HD, this is what shows up:

  • HT201250 Will Time Machine wipe my external hard drive if its formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?

I want to use Time Machine to back up my mac. I have heard that it will wipe the HDD if its not formatted correctly. Disk utility says its
Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Is this alright? or will it wipe it?

Yes, if you use Disk Utility to reformat the drive or assign that drive to TimeMachine it will wipe all existing data off the drive/partition.
Like was mentioned, only use one drive for TimeMachine and preferably another one for a bootable clone.

  • Formatted Mac Os X accidently. Now wont boot from disk or hard disk. Help!

    Hello,
Last weekend I managed to stupidly and accidently wipe my mac os x part of the HD when it was meant to be for the partition I had freshly made for boot camp. Since the mac os x part of the HDD was formatted as NTFS, I now cannot boot to that and have been trying to get on to disk utility to sort this mess out... by booting to disk... problem is... it wont.
    Long story short.
After insertng the Mac Os X Tiger install disk and holding C it does not force boot the disk and all I see is a grey folder icon with a question mark which flashes several then vanishes... I've tried inserting the disk and holding the Option key, and C... and also tried tapping both option keys fast to no avail... the cursor appears however when I do both and it then freezes and the screen stays white.
Tried phoning Apple tech UK to discover i'm out of applecare cover and it'll cost me £35 to get incident cover for this incident. She then said at the end,.... you just need to get to disk utility and sort it from ther... problem is.... I cant get there.
Apologies for the mini-rant... I've just tried every solution and I'm still at square1.
    Thanks in advance..

    +Any other suggestions?+
You didn't mention whether or not it still sounds the start-up chime when you try to boot.
Also, will it boot to the Apple Hardware Test (located on one of the grey-labeled original system discs) - hold down the d key instead of c key. Has it ever run the AHT prior to this problem?
Were you successful at performing a PRAM reset? Only this will cure the iMac of its propensity to search for the old startup disk. Had you ever done one prior to this problem? If you can do that and then immediately switch to holding the c or d key, it must force a boot. Since all you need is for it to boot, you should have no external device connected to your iMac.

  • Formatting mac book pro (no CD is provided)

I Bought Mac Book Pro just twom months ago (15-inch, Late 2011) and having so many errors because of very bad servicing centre .
I might need to format it and partition it also to download windows Xp also. My laptop came without CD and don't know how to do it.
the seller told me that the system instalation  is stored on the hard drive and I should save it on a USB but still confused
can any one help me .

    Hi:
I asked Apple support about this last week. They told me that in some cases they can help you do a system restore, even if you're having serious issues with your computer.
But, what I wanted was an actual disc, so that (like you) I could format my hard drive.
I was told they no longer provide copies of the operating system on disc. If you want it, you can either buy it on a thumb drive from the Apple online store for $69, or you can download it from the Apple Online store for $29 and either burn it to your own disc, or put it on your own thumb drive.
    Hope this helps.

  • Formatting Mac Mini

    Good Morning / Good Evening
I'm facing a serious peoblem, my Mac Mini's DVD drive stopped working; it reads nothing!! I'm trying to format my computer without using the DVD drive. So can you please help me how to do that using an external method? I already have its original OS DVDs !!
    Thanks in advance

Do you have an external Drive?
Do both your Macs have Firewire?
If so it may work to use your Install Disc in the other Mac...
If you have another Mac with Firewire, you can use it's Optical Drive for the Mini.
Put the Disc in the Other Mac, boot the other Mac into FireWire target disk mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Boot the Mini with the Option/alt key held down & the Disc in the other one shoild show as a boot choice.
