Formatting Seagate 1TB external drive - How long does it take?

I'm 20+ minutes into erasing this disc and see no way to monitor any progress.
I've got a blue-stripe barber pole bar spinning along next to a line that reads: newfs_hfs:/dev/rdisk1s1: partition size is not a multiple of 4K.
Anybody know what that means?
Anybody have an idea how long it takes to wipe 1TB?
TA

Formatting should be instant. It sounds like you aren't just formatting, but also writing zeros or something. If you are using Zero Out Data, I just did that to several new 1TB internal and external drives, and I think it took about 2.5 hours each. Using a Mac Pro and eSATA. It might take longer on a laptop, not sure.
The time seemed appropriate because that was similar to how long it took to clone my machine backups onto them. Each full clone took over 2 hours of copying. Either way, it's writing as fast as it can.
If you used 7-Pass or 35-Pass Erase, frankly you're going to wait days.
Remember, we're talking about one freaking terabyte of data to write. Just a few years ago, it was inconceivable that anyone would need to do that at home. It felt like long enough waiting for my old 250GB disks to zero out, and these are 4x that.

  • On Seagate 1TB external drive for W8.1 system image backup

System image attempt using W8.1 on a Seagate 1Tb external drive stalls and advises "Insufficient space" etc. I've tried expanding the volume, decreasing the volume, renaming the drive.  What I've read on this site requires using non-Microsoft
programs to solve a Microsoft issue.  As this is  a W8.1 issue (no problems with backups in W7) surely you Microsoft experts out there can come up with a simple solution for computer illerates lilke I am.

    Hi Jamesg46,
What was the exact full error message?
Also, please check your System Reserved partition space to see if it has a large USN journa.
If so,please try to clear and disable the USN journal on the System Reserved partition:
You can refer to the following thread:

  • "How long does it take to do a dist-upgrade on your distro?"

Yesterday there was a question in the USALUG.org "How long does it take to do a dist-upgrade on your distro?"
This question was a good question, so I decide to make the ultimate test. I have a lot of computers standing here around, and remembered that on one of them was have already Archlinux installation. I was right, when I booted, the system check said me, that the system was 253 days not checked anymore. I got so excited that I forgot to check was it one of my 0.7.2 Gimmick or 0.8 Voodoo installations.

After reboot the system loads all new applications with out any problem. Later I replaced the intel-video driver "xf86-video-i810 1.7.4-6" with the driver xf86-video-intel 2.2.0-2. No problems at all.

definitely. By contrast, here's a regular upgrade on my debian box -- out of the blue it's having some problem with one of the packages, and it's turning into a regular recursive nightmare.

It's so "delicate" and temperamental compared to the no-nonsense, straightforward approach of Arch. If one little thing is off, the entire system has a hissy-fit and won't do anything until you hunt the internet high and low searching for a solution, encountering all the debian hawks along the way who are ready to rip your head off at the first suggestion that debian isn't directly from god and could have a problem. Imo, Arch is the best linx distro hands down. Nothing else even comes close.

  • Installing Windows 2003 Server Standard/XP is very slow- how long does it take?

Hello, I'm looking for some ideas here...  I tried installing Windows 2003 on my newly build computer, but after 3 hours it still wasn't installed, and seemed to just be really really slow, and not frozen.  I ended up giving up and tried putting windows xp on it, but after an hour it still didn't finish installing.  I figure there really has to be something wrong here...  The only thing out of the ordinary is that I'm using 4GB ram DDR2 667.  How long does it take to install windows xp on your system?!?
Things that I've tried have been:
    disabled hypterthreading
    loaded optimized settings
    changed sata to mode II
    MSI 945G Neo-F Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 945G ATX Intel Motherboard
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3160812AS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
    Intel Pentium 4 650 Prescott 800MHz FSB LGA 775 EM64T
    pqi TURBO $GB (4 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5400) Unbuffered Dual
    POwer: Ultra Xfinity 500Watt ATX +5v +3.3v +12v1 +12v2 -12v +5vsb
    BIOS 1.2
    Optial Drive: Generic Toshiba DVD

1&3 and 2&4 seem to be working okay,  I've tested all these combinations (this is just plugging in the memory and looking at the cpu in task manager)
mem1 in slot 1 okay (tested slot 1 okay)
    mem1 in slot 1
mem2 in slot 3 okay (test 2gigs in duel channel first set of memory okay)
    mem3 in slot 1
mem4 in slot 3 okay (tested 2 gig in duel channel second set of memory)
mem1 in slot 2 okay (tested slot 2 okay)
    mem1 in slot 2
mem2 in slot 4 okay (tested the second duel channel okay)
    mem1 in slot 1
    mem2 in slot 3
    mem3 in slot 2
mem4 in slot 4 high cpu
    mem3 in slot 1
    mem1 in slot 2
    mem4 in slot 3
mem2 in slot 4 high cpu
I upgraded to the latest bios, no luck...  I haven't run any extensive memory tests, but through the tests i did, it seems that the memory is okay.  Given these tests do you think it is more likely a problem with the motherboard running 4 slots?  Or maybe some power issue, where the  4 sticks of memory are not getting enough power to work right.
The power supply I am using is Xfinity 500W

  • HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET iPHOTO BOOK?

I would like to order my first HARD COVER book and since I am not living in USA, my friend would bring the book back to Europe.
But the only problem is that, she will be there only two days, so the book must be at the address, she will be living on 9th of February.
When do I need to place the order? How long does it take to get the album?
    Thank you for your help.

Can't say - no idea where it is going to or what will be going on them
If it were me I'd say that the extra cost was a cheap insurance policy against external forces messing things up - but you make that decision
Waiting three days to order and shipping ground rather than express will increase the chances of it not making it - probably still 95% + (guessing of course) that it will but every day you wait makes the chances less and not using the fastest shipping also increases the chances of failure
If money is the issue then ordering today rather than Wed would be a good idea to me
    Good Luck

  • How long does it take to delete all the files in a lost MacBook Pro?

How long does it take to delete all the files in a lost MacBook Pro?

Quite a while since there may be 1/2 million files or more to delete. There is only one quick way, and that is to reformat the drive.

  • How long does it take to back up my macbook pro?

How long does it take to back up my macbook pro?

How long TimeMachine will take is a function of: 1) how frequently you back up, 2) how much free space the backup drive has, and 3) how the drive is connected to the computer.
    1) the longer you wait between backups increases the data that has to be backed up and it also increases the preparation time. Letting more than a couple days between backups elapse isn't a good idea to begin with - who wants to try and redo 3 days of work - but it also seems to take longer than three daily backups.
    2) when your backup drive becomes too full, TimeMachine must 'look through' the oldest files and delete enough to make room for the newer files. This can take a very long time.
    3) backing up over WiFi to a networked drive or TimeCapsule is the slowest backup method and when you have lots to back up it can take a very long time. If your connection speed isn't good it gets worse. For all the advantages that a TimeCapsule appears to have, this alone was enough to make me rethink the idea.
With a 17 day estimate I'm guessing you must be using a TimeCapsule.

  • How long does it take to install mountain lion

how long does it take to install mountain lion

It depends on a number of factors - the speed of your computer and hard drive mostly. My experience has been that a standard upgrade will take 30-45 minutes. If you are erasing the hard drive and installing, it takes about 20-30 minutes, not counting migrating your data and applications.
This doesn't count downloading which can take as litting as 40 minutes (a very fast broadband connection during off hours) to as much as several hours.

  • So how long does it take to load a 160GB iPod using the Convert Higher ...

I have a 160GB Gen 5 that I bought when first released back in the day when they were $400. Through a number of changes, the most recent being the advent of the Convert Higher Bitrate Songs to 128bit AAC feature, I decided to look at what more music I could store. After all was said and done, I ended up with a bit of a disaster with cover art not being properly applied to the music being played. I decided to *restore the ipod* based on suggestions in the discussion boards, and equally important was following the hints and tips here.
    http://www.samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/grouping.asp
The advice is especially important in very large library situations to ensure you have uniqueness in the albums you want to display. Hadn't really given it much thought until I had the ability to see the individual albums for the 40K songs on the iPod via the cover art view.
Finally the point of the post...
*So how long does it take to load a 160GB iPod using the Convert Higher Bitrate option now available in iTunes 9.1?* The specs on my computer are not highend by any stretch, but it's no slouch, and neither of the CPUs are ever pegged. At this point I've lost count of how much time it's taken, but the load is going on 3-4 days. With some breaks in between because I need to check each incremental load to verify there is no cover art corruption, correct bad tags and such, but for the most part the loading is visibly slow, and I'm sure the conversion is the cause. I'm not really complaining at this point, but there is clearly room for improvement. And of course unless there is a redo involved in which case I will get quite cranky.
*I would like to hear the experiences of others.*
Finally to lend a bit more credence to the performance concern, my 32GB iPhone 3GS for only about say 28GB of music takes about 24 hrs to load from a 2.2GHz dual core intel laptop, again using the convert higher bitrate option.

With AC power adapter it takes 3-4 hours for a full charge. With the USB charger it takes 9-0 hours for a full charge. I am not happy with them removing the AC charger and other accessoreis at all. It's business but it still stinks.
I know I would rethink my purchase but would most likely end up buying the Micro anyway

Im going to migrate to another mac using time machine, how long does it take (time machine/main hdd in the old mac was at about 700gb capacity)

There is no way of determining that. The time is dependent on a number of different factors.
