Former PC User Switching To MacBook Pro... Some Questions

Hey all.
Sorry for the newbie question, but I could use some advice. I am a long-time PC user and have finally decided to switch to a MacBook Pro. I am scheduled for a tutorial/purchasing session at the Apple Store on Sunday.
Here are my main questions.
The current PC laptop I have does not suit my needs. It has an 80 GB hard drive. I use it primarily for a lot of photos, music and documents.
I was thinking about getting a 2.8 GHz 15" MacBook Pro and then upping the RAM from 4.0 GB to 8.0 GB.
The problem with all of my laptops of the past is that they couldn't hold all the data and photos that I have. I prefer not using external hard drives and keeping everything on one.
I am also indecisive about going with a 13" or a 15". Can a 13" have the same processor and RAM capabilities?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Murtz,
If you are an average user like me I don't think you are likely to see too much difference in speed between the machines you are looking at.
I have a 2.4Ghz MacBook (white 2008), a 2.66Ghz MacBook Pro (mid 2009) and a 2.8Ghz iMac (2008). They all have 4 Gb of RAM and there is a mix of the old intel logic board hardware (MacBook & iMac) and the newer Nvidia hardware(MacBook Pro). Graphics cards are Intel(MacBook), ATI(iMac) and Nvidia(MacBook Pro), and there is a mix of DDR 2(MacBook & iMac) and DDR 3(MacBook Pro) RAM running at different speeds.
I would really struggle to notice any difference in speed on day to day tasks. The MacBook is slow to render some graphics due to its Intel integrated graphics, but apart from that about the only time I would notice any difference is if I start them all up at the same time, then there is a difference of maybe 5-10 seconds between fastest and slowest.
It sounds like Hard Disk space might be more important for you. You may also see slight speed increases in terms of file reading and writing from a faster Hard Drive, but again I have 5400 rpm drives, and 7200 rpm drives and see no real appreciable difference day to day.
I think the bottom line these days is that unless you are engaged in very intensive work, the speed differences between machines are almost imperceptible to most of us.
I would recommend the 15" to you, but based mostly on the screen size. It is not that much bigger or heavier than the 13" but I think the extra space really makes a difference.
If you can spring for a model with the dual graphics cards too I would advise it. The 9400M is great for most day to day tasks but it is an integrated solution at the end of the day, and who knows when you might need the extra graphics power!

  • Converting from a PC to a Macbook Pro - some questions

Hey guys. I'm a long-time PC user who has finally given up on PCs and am very seriously considering buying the Macbook Pro 15-inch.
I'm relatively clueless about Mac issues and especially about transferring my data from PC to Macs, so I would appreciate some help on the following:
    1) How do I transfer my files from my current hard drive to a Mac? Is there some sort of wizard that can sort my data for me?
I have a hard drive with years of documents, software, old backups; and I understand that I can bascially plug and play via USB. However I have absolutely no clue what files should goes to which locations on a Mac.
    2) Should I bother getting the discrete graphics version?
I do some products/marketing graphics design on Adobe CS3 on my PC, and some light gaming (mostly RPGs, no heavy-duter shooters like Crysis etc). I'm wondering if the integrated graphics version is enough for me.
    3) Lastly, are there common issues with the Macbook Pro 15" I should know about?
    Thanks for the help

Hello, One thing you may want to consider is how to view all your years of documents from your PC. Apple offers iWork and uses apps Pages (word processing) and Numbers (spreadsheet), and Keynote (presentations).
You can open your Office docs with iWork but for me, I found iWork difficult to use.
There is also Open Office (openoffice.org). I do not have much experience with this but have used it a few times to open Word docs. I haven't used it to create any docs though...
Finally there is Office for Mac. I've just recently purchased this and there are some differences from MS Office...I'm still finding them so can't give a lot of detail here..
I switched back to Mac in 06 and have been very happy. You may have already done this but go into an Apple store and play around with one. This will help you understand where to move your PC files. Or as mentioned, the Apple store will do this for you.
Then there is this forum. Lots of friendly and knowledgeable people here.
    Good Luck!

Try connecting the iPad to the computer that you do not want to WiFi sync with and uncheck the WiFi sync option in iTunes. Then click on Apply. Reboot the iPad and see if that does the trick.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Moving Libraries between users on same MacBook Pro

So when I bought my new MacBook Pro, I started a new user account and imported my old user acct from my Black MacBook.  This may have been a mistake because now I have an iPhoto library and an iTunes library for each user on my new MacBook Pro.  I would like to move these libraries from my old MacBook user acct to the new acct on the new MacBook Pro.  Is there a way to do this?  I ultimately want to delete the old MacBook acct and just have one user on my MacBook Pro.  Does that make sense?
    Thanks!

Log into the old account. Drag the Libraries to the Users/Shared folder.
Switch to the new Account. Drag the Libraries to the Pictures or Music folders as appropriate.

I just created a new profile/user on my MacBook Pro. My pointer/mouse on my trackpad. It works fine in my older user profile, but when I go to the new profile my mac will not respond to clicks. The Mouse moves but will not click. Already tried restarting and the pram zap. The problem starts when I log out of my main profile. I get to the login screen and my laptop stops responding to clicks. When I manage to make my way back to my main profile the mouse works perfectly.  Should I just delete the new profile and try again?

If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues.

If you've admin privileges and there are no files in the user account that you want to keep, just go to System Preferences>Users & Groups and unlock it with your admin password. Select the user that you want to delete and click on the minus button. You'll get a warning before you completely delete the user but once it's gone, it's gone.

Your problem is, one user, even an Admin user, doesn't normally have access to another user's stuff.   That's kinda the point of separate accounts.
There's no eay way to "merge" accounts.  See Transferring files from one User Account to another.
Your best bet is probably to start over, and use Setup Assistant.  See How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups? and note the green "Second chance" box there.

  • How do I set up an additional user on my MacBook Pro?

How do I set up an additional user on my MacBook Pro?

Go to System Preferences>Users and Groups.  Then click on the lock (if it's locked), to unlock the pane.  You will have to put in your password.  Then click on the + to add an account.  Add a password, and give it privileges.  You can make an admin account (not recommended if you're letting a stranger or a kid use your computer, but that's your choice).  Hope this helps.

  • I have just set up an additional user on my Macbook Pro but...

    Hi,
I have just set up an additional user on my Macbook Pro but...
We have just moved country from the UK to the USA. So we had to sell our iMac, which was primarily my wife's.
I have the new 15" Macbook pro, and decided to set up an additional user so my wife.
Everything is working fine apart from safari.
The bookmarks from my browser appear on her safari browser to. This pretty much defeats the object of 2 users, because all she does is shop online.
I really don't want to have shopping site cluttering up my bookmarks bar, or other bookmark folders on my log in.
Does anybody know if this can be changed?
    Help please.
    Cheers,
    Pete

Do both account make use of the same Apple ID? In that case Safari will use the same settings, which are stored on iCloud. To prevent this, open System Preferences in your wife's account, select iCloud and deselect Safari from the list.

  • Taking ages to delete user account on macbook pro?!

    Hi,
I'm deleting an old user off my macbook pro and setting it up for another user, however it is taking AGES (25minutes so far....) to delete. The System Preferences won't let me quit as it says it's still working and under the account it does say "Deleting account" However I now cannot click or highlight this account.
I'm not convinced it's still working as it's taken so long. Is this a normal length of time to wait?
    Thanks

  • How to on a MacBook Pro-some switcher questions

I bought my first Mac in March of this year but i am still learning all the time about it.
I have some questions about Mac OSX at the moment i am designing a website for my sister she has bought her own domain with Fasthosts and i have been designing her website mainly in Windows XP via bootcamp because i do not know how to save in html on my Mac. Do i need to buy software so that i can design websites on my Mac so that i can save in html? I want to hand encode and then save in html? Is there a application in Mac that will allow me to do this? In Windows i can encode by hand in notepad and just save in html very simply. Also, Is there a way to edit what i have already done in Windows on my Mac. I tried using Text-edit and that does not bring up a plain text version of the code when i open up what i have already done.
Also, how do i resize a picture using my Mac. I often use Paint to do this because i have not figured how to do this on a Mac yet?
I have been wondering about this for a while also but how do i refresh a page using Mac OS. In windows you press F5 to refresh a page but what do you do with a Mac?
I am finding that the Mac does not cater as well for people who do not want to buy extra software to use it for example to have a Paint programme that is decent you need to buy extra software wheras on Windows XP Paint comes free of charge.

I bought my first Mac in March of this year but i am
still learning all the time about it.
Welcome to Macs!!! I hope you're enjoying them!
I have some questions about Mac OSX at the moment i

design websites on my Mac so that i can save in html?
Two sided question - yes and no. I have never purchased any but there are some for purchase... I forget their names and I'm sure another user will chime in with them.
You can use both iWeb or Nvu. iWeb is more drag and drop, but you can publish your site to a folder, and then send that to your ftp server using a program called Cyberduck. Nvu is a free HTML editor... very similar to Microsoft Frontpage. It's decent, i've had it a while ago, but it's a bit slow and has a few bugs still. But what do you expect for free?!?!
I want to hand encode and then save in html? Is there
a application in Mac that will allow me to do this?
As a new web designer, I don't know what you mean by hand encode... But I think NVU will help you out with that.
In Windows i can encode by hand in notepad and just
    save in html very simply.
Yes - NVU you can edit the html code inside the program, or you can open the html codes in Text Edit and edit them that way.
Also, Is there a way to
edit what i have already done in Windows on my Mac.
I tried using Text-edit and that does not bring up a
plain text version of the code when i open up what i
    have already done.
Again, you can open the html in NVU and do it there.
Also, how do i resize a picture using my Mac. I often
use Paint to do this because i have not figured how
to do this on a Mac yet?
Paint?!?!?!?! Oh boy! In many programs there is the "inspector" button (like iWeb) and you can do it easily.
In iPhoto you can click on File-->Export--> And rescale the image in the size you want.
I have been wondering about this for a while also but
how do i refresh a page using Mac OS. In windows you
press F5 to refresh a page but what do you do with a

Refresh? You mean like safari? Apple+R

Really?? Paint is terrible. Any program that windows gives you for free, apple has a better counterpart available for download on the internet for free as well.
You can also try GraphicConverter. This was previously free on powerbooks but was forgotten on Intel Macs... probably because they didn't have a universal binary at the time. There is a free trial, give it a shot.

  • PC User Seriously Considering MacBook Pro - Advice Needed!!

    Hey guys and girls,
So I have been using PCs now for almost 20 years and of course Windows since the 3.1 releases. I have been using a Sony Vaio laptop for the last 3 and a half years and the poor thing is just getting slower and slower and formatting the computer does not make much difference at all. Also I am getting a little bit tired of problems associated with Windows and PCs and although I know how to solve them I just want an easier life so I am thinking about upgrading to the MacBook Pro.
I have played around on a MacBook for a small amount of time as a friend of mine has one. I have read up alot about Leopard and I really like its design and features (so I will wait until Leopard is released before I buy). My main concern really is that I need a laptop that is capable of business tasks (as I run my own business) and I also wish to use it for Audio Recording (demos, EPs etc). So I need to know what MacBook / MacBook Pro would be best for me bearing in mind I have never owned a Mac before!!
If you can give me some advise I would really appreciate it! Thanks =)
P.S. I am looking to steer away from Windows as much as possible but I will need it to run certain products associated with my business that only use Internet Explorer 6 or above.

Welcome to the forums. Glad to see you are having a serious think about moving to the Mac and OS X. The Vaio is a well-made machine, but Windows is not to everyone's taste these days.
Many of the problems you have on Windows do not exist on Macs but that is not to say they are not problem-free. Before you settle on the model (and the date) have a look at Apple's own resources, for example their "< href="http://www.apple.com/support/">Solutions" including Switching 101.
As well as a version of Microsoft Office for Mac, there are a number of other solutions such as Open Office or (my choice) NeoOffice -- perhaps a little slower but certainly usable. There is also the new Numbers application in iWork (including Keynote (instead of PowerPoint) and Pages (instead of Word).
If you are looking at such professional applications as sound recording, then you would probably be best looking at the MacBookPro: the only choice you need to make is size (15", 17") and configuration. Go for what you can afford, but also factor in buying more memory as soon as you can.
If you need to run IE6, there are a couple of solutions: a Windows installation using Boot Camp, Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion; or perhaps Crossover for one or two Win applications (mine does run IE6); and you might also look for alternative browsers as sometimes these are enough to spoof those websites that think they need IE6.
If there are other must have Windows applications, you might try with Crossover first (download a trial to check it out) or you may have to consider one of the three solutions (above). There is a Boot Camp forum and I believe a Parallels user group where you might find additional answers.
