Forte M2 and Oracle 8.1.6 on Sun Solaris 2.5.1

Anybody out there running Forte M2 with Oracle version 8.1.6?? The best
would be on a Sun Solaris 2.5.1 machine.
Our Oracle dba wants to upgrade for another application but Forte's
certification matrix only goes up to Oracle 8.0.3
Any experiences with version M and Oracle 8.1 would be helpful.

did this problem ever get solved. My problem seems similar, but, I get the "value not allowed" with the "end-of-file on communication channel" errors

It is because of UNIX shell. I also faced this error during installation.
First check your shell by the following command.
    $ echo $SHELL
    Then select the below.
    For csh shell
    $ setenv DISPLAY 192.168.1.128:0.0
    $ export DISPLAY
    For sh,ksh and bash
    $ DISPLAY=192.168.1.128:0.0
    $ export DISPLAY
After you do this check the value of DISPLAY variable.
    $ echo $DISPLAY
If the DISPLAY variable is set then run ./runInstaller.
One advice: Keep a complete log of your terminal session. This will help you in future :)

  • Installation of Oracle 9.0.1 on Sun Solaris 5.8

    Hi,
I am trying to install Oracle9i Enterprise Edition (9.0.1) on Sun Solaris.
I started the installer and the installation proceeded fine. When the installer asked for the second CD, I aborted the installation as the second cd was not available to me at that time.

    $ ./runInstaller

Could somebody please give a pointer on what needs to be done to get the GUI running?

  • Installing oracle 10g release 2 on spark solaris!! urgent help!

    hi guys!
Am installing oracle 10g r2 on spark sun solaris. I did install the software without any pb, but when installing the database using dbca, I have this errors.
    ORA-27154: post/wait create failed
ORA-27300: OS system dependent operation:semget failed with status: 28
ORA-27301: OS failure message: No space left on device

Edited my kernel parameters and in the /etc/system file, ai've added
    set noexec_user_stack=1
    set semsys:seminfo_semmni=100
    set semsys:seminfo_semmns=1024

    set shmsys:shminfo_shmmin=1
    set shmsys:shminfo_shmmni=100
    set shmsys:shminfo_shmseg=10
Space aint an issue and dont know how to over come this error!
Should ai just install the db using scripts and run the neccessary .sql scripts instead of going through dbca?
    junior DBA in distress.

This appears to be because of low semaphores setting. Did you reboot your server after making the /etc/system parameter changes ?

  • Sun Solaris 10,Upgrade 8 or higher,having issues with VxFS,for Oracle 11gr2

A while ago, we tried doing a prototype upgrade of our main Oracle 10g db to Oracle 11gr2.
The OS on which our Oracle 10g is running is Sun Solaris 10, upgrade 4.
According to Oracle 11gr2 documentation, we need Sun Solaris 10, upgrade 6 or higher for Oracle 11g2.
The filesystem we are using is VxFS, Veritas File System.
According to our system administrator, we had issues , making Sun Solar 10, upgrade 8 , work with the VxFS filesystem.
I was wondering if anybody is running Oracle 11g2 on Sun Solaris 10 upgrade 6 or higher with VxFS file system.
At present, our Oracle db upgrade project is on a hold, because of the above issue. So your help on this , can really help us in figuring out if there is an issue between VxFS filesystem and Sun Solaris 10 OS.
    Thanks
    Ashish

    Hi Ashish,
We are not running Veritas Cluster file system.
We tried moving our Oracle 10g r2 db on ZFS ,before doing the upgrade and performance on ZFS was worst.
ZFS has certain memory parameter setting. If you did not configure that then ZFS will eat your complete system memory.
My system administrator, has gotten a copy of Solaris 10 upgrade 9 and will try that with VxFS.
I was curious to find out if folks are running Oracle 11g on Sun Solaris 10 with VxFS file system and if they had experienced any issue. If you can Install Vxfs on Oracle Soalris 10 U9, then according to me there sholudn't be any limitations for an oracle database.
Recently i installed Oracle database 11.2.0.2 on one of my test server. I have created two databases - one on ZFS and another on ASM.
    Refer:
    http://appsdbaworkshop.blogspot.com/2010/10/installation-of-11202-on-oracle-solaris.html
We dont have any performance issues. We are testing it for the performance benchmarks on both of the filesystem.
If you can Install Vxfs on Oracle Soalris 10 U9, then according to me there sholudn't be any limitations for an oracle database.

    (V7.3 ~ V8.X) ORACLE DB AUTO STARTUP/SHUTDOWN ON SUN SOLARIS 2.6/2.7
    ====================================================================
    PURPOSE
    Explanation
    /etc/inittab : o/s의 초기화 과정을 조절하는 화일
    /etc/rc2.d/S99dbstart : /etc/init.d/dbstart 에 대한 symbolic link
    /etc/rc0.d/K01dbshut : /etc/init.d/dbshut 에 대한 symbolic link
/var/opt/oracle/oratab : 시스템에 설치된 오라클 인스턴스에 대한 정보.
/etc/init.d/dbstart, dbshut 화일은 super user(root)로 생성하시고,
    실행 가능하도록 해야 합니다.
    1. 먼저 vi /etc/inittab 화일을 열어보십시오.
    ap::sysinit:/sbin/autopush -f /etc/iu.ap
    fs::sysinit:/sbin/rcS >/dev/console 2>&1 </dev/console
    is:3:initdefault:
    p3:s1234:powerfail:/usr/sbin/shutdown -y -i5 -g0 >/dev/console 2>&1
    s0:0:wait:/sbin/rc0 >/dev/console 2>&1 </dev/console
    s1:1:wait:/usr/sbin/shutdown -y -iS -g0 >/dev/console 2>&1 </dev/console
    s2:23:wait:/sbin/rc2 >/dev/console 2>&1 </dev/console
    s3:3:wait:/sbin/rc3 >/dev/console 2>&1 </dev/console
    s5:5:wait:/sbin/rc5 >/dev/console 2>&1 </dev/console
    s6:6:wait:/sbin/rc6 >/dev/console 2>&1 </dev/console
    fw:0:wait:/sbin/uadmin 2 0 >/dev/console 2>&1 </dev/console
    of:5:wait:/sbin/uadmin 2 6 >/dev/console 2>&1 </dev/console
    rb:6:wait:/sbin/uadmin 2 1 >/dev/console 2>&1 </dev/console
    sc:234:respawn:/usr/lib/saf/sac -t 300
    co:234:respawn:/usr/lib/saf/ttymon -g -h -p "`uname -n` console login: " -T
    sun
    -d /dev/console -l console -m ldterm,ttcompat
    s2:23:wait:/sbin/rc2 >/dev/console 2>&1 </dev/console
따라서 /etc/rc2.d/S99dbstart 화일을 사용하여 dbstart를 실행한다.
    s0:0:wait:/sbin/rc0 >/dev/console 2>&1 </dev/console
    이것은 /sbin/rc0 를 실행시키는데 /sbin/rc0 는 /etc/rc0.d 디렉토리에
이 스크립트는 $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbshut 스크립트를 실행시켜서 오라클을
    shutdown 시킨다.
    PATH=/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
    set `/usr/bin/who -r`
    if [ x$9 = "xS" -o x$9 = "x1" ]
    then
echo 'The system is coming up. Please wait.'
    BOOT=yes
    3. 그 다음에 vi /etc/rc0 화일을 한번 열어보세요.
    이 스크립트 화일은 run-level 0에서 사용되는 스크립트입니다.
    PATH=/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
echo 'The system is coming down. Please wait.'
    # make sure /usr is mounted before proceeding since init scripts
    # and this shell depend on things on /usr file system
    /sbin/mount /usr > /dev/null 2>&1
    # The following segment is for historical purposes.
    # There should be nothing in /etc/shutdown.d.
    if [ -d /etc/shutdown.d ]
    then
    for f in /etc/shutdown.d/*
    if [ -s $f ]
    then
    /sbin/sh ${f}
    fi
    fi
    4. /etc/init.d/dbstart 와 /etc/init.d/dbshut 스크립트를 만들어야 합니다.
    /etc/init.d/dbstart 화일은 다음과 같이 만듭니다.
    su - <oracle_owner> -c <$ORACLE_HOME>/bin/dbstart
    /etc/init.d/dbshut 화일은 다음과 같이 만듭니다.
    su - <oracle_owner> -c <$ORACLE_HOME>/bin/dbshut
    5. /etc/rc2.d/S99dbstart 화일을 /etc/init.d/dbstart에 대한 link로 생성합니다.
    ln -s /etc/init.d/dbstart /etc/rc2.d/S99dbstart
    6. /etc/rc0.d/K01dbshut 화일을 /etc/init.d/dbshut에 대한 link로 생성합니다.
    ln -s /etc/init.d/dbshut /etc/rc0.d/K01dbshut
    7. /var/opt/oracle/oratab
    ORA805:/oracle4/ora8/app/oracle/product/8.0.5:Y
    ORA815:/oracle4/ora8i/app/oracle/product/8.1.5:Y

    Hi Frank,
This is a bug in 9.0.1. It is fixed in 9.2 and
backported to 9.0.1.2 (rdbms 9.0.1.2 patch). Note that you
need to specify the sdo_indx_dims=2 in the parameter clause.
As a workaround in 9.0.1.0 you could do:
    (1) remove the z coordinate (as you mentioned),
    (2) set the srid to null (instead of 8307) both in
the geometries as well as the index metadata,
    (3) set geodetic=false in the create-index parameters.
    Hope that helps,
    Ravi.

RCU is available for Windows & linux platforms only but it can be used to create schema's on remote databases as well. So in case your DB is on non Linux/Windows platform, then run RCU from any machine with Linux/Windows plaform and create schema's on remote database.

  • RE: Rel 3.0 and Oracle

    Debbie,
Yes, we have the same (or similar) problem. When trying to connect to
Oracle I get some type of deserialization error & a connection is never
made. I've sent it in to tech support & I haven't heard anything back.
On a side note, I'm also having a problem on 3.0.E.0 when I lose the
initial connection & try to re-connect. The reconnect fails. We're
trying to implement the Forte Persistence Plan using the DBResourceMgr.
I've been working with Tech Support for over 2 weeks, but we still
    haven't solved the problem.

    Subject: Rel 3.0 and Oracle
    To all,
We have just upgraded our development environment to Forte Rel
    3.0.f.2 and
now we can no longer get a connection to Oracle 7.3.3. Has anyone else
    had a
problem after the upgrade to 3.0? We are using the remote connection.
Automatic_ipc has been set to off in the sqlnet.ora Nothing has
    changed on the
Oracle side or with any Oracle related environment parameters.
    We have put a
problem into Forte on this also.
Basically our development has ground to a halt, so any help would
    be greatly
    appreciated.

    To all,
Thank you all for the quick response. The problem turned out to be the
FORTE_STACK_SIZE parameter. Although we were not getting the sympton
described in tech note 10908 I decided to set the parameter to the
recommended minimum described in the tech note. After setting the parameter
we were able to connect to Oracle.
So if anyone has connection problems when upgrading, this is something to
look at even if your symptoms do not match those described in the tech note.
    Thanks again,

  • INFORMIX and ORACLE on LINUX

    Hello Stephen,
some time ago we talked about Forte for LINUX. Now I think it will need
not a long time that Forte is available on LINUX.
INFORMIX and ORACLE has officially announced that they offer their
Database on LINUX. Now it is only a question of time, that Forte
got a business-case from big Firms which want to see Forte on LINUX.
In GERMANY I know that Mercedes use LINUX for car-development and
Sixt-Budget use LINUX for their car-rental (worldwide).
I think, if Forte is availaible for LINUX than a big beng goes through
the IT-Market. Many firms just wait for a OO-orientated 4GL-Development
environment to distribute their business-processes to many little
servers which are cheap and powerfull. It is than a question of
less money to use a big machine or just 10 or 20 LINUX servers (which are
    cheaper and faster).
Sorry for my enthusiasm on this mailing list, but i'am

    Hello Stephen,
some time ago we talked about Forte for LINUX. Now I think it will need
not a long time that Forte is available on LINUX.Well, I suspect if you ask them, the official policy statement is: Linux is
not a supported platform at this time, and we cannot discuss unannounced
products. (or some such thing). Privately, talking to some of the Forte
people at FORUM this year, I was distinctly left with the impression that
it will be a cold day in hell before such a port is done.
INFORMIX and ORACLE has officially announced that they offer their
Database on LINUX. Now it is only a question of time, that Forte
got a business-case from big Firms which want to see Forte on LINUX.Well, I haven't talked to our Oracle sales rep, but I did go to their web
site and I couldn't find anywhere where you could download it, or much more
than a "how great it is" statement. Based upon my prior dealings with
Oracle, and some well documented cases, I would be surprised if you could
get it today - delivered and working, that is.
Informix, on the other hand, I just downloaded (not installed yet, but at
least I have in my hot little paws something that says it will be Informix
    on Linux).
One of the problems that Forte faces in the marketplace is the cost of the
product. Yes, it does a lot (personally, I'm quite a fan). But, some IT
shops - especially the ones that have capable people on staff - are
beginning to look at the distributed object characteristics of Java and
asking "Why can't I do what I want with Java RMI, etc.?" When I talked to a
Forte salesman at FORUM, his only response was "Well, those really aren't
Forte customers anyway!" As Java adds things like transactional objects,
transparent database access (yup! persistent objects in a relational
database - without all the coding - and with performance too!), JavaSpaces,
Jini, etc. I think it's a "head in the sand" approach for Forte to ignore
this. To me, Java presents some very compelling features. And, according to
some friends I have inside of Sun, basically all of the brightest people in
Sun have all migrated over to doing the Java stuff, so it's only likely to
get better. People like Rick Cattel (databases) and Jim Waldo (distributed
object systems) who have been giving this stuff lots of thought for
years!! That's why it's so well thought out when you see it for the first
    time.
The only glaring omission from it seems to be a generic event queue
mechanism. Fortunately, given the other stuff Java has to offer (RMI, event
classes, etc.) you can build a very good one in about a man week. In fact,
Java has one, they just didn't take a "high" enough superclass - they
limited it to AWT events. If they had made it all events, you wouldn't even
    have to build that.
Now, don't get me wrong... Forte is planning to incorporate lots of really
cool Java stuff in their next release (preannounced at FORUM). But to me,
that's not the issue on a larger scale. The real issue is this: are
environments which are cheaper incorporating a lot of what Forte does - and
the answer is Yes! Incidentally, there is a version of the Java environment
being developed for Linux under the GNU license, for the express purpose of
making it open and keeping it free (and open). Someone recently told me
that it is now available, but I haven't confirmed that yet.
In GERMANY I know that Mercedes use LINUX for car-development and
Sixt-Budget use LINUX for their car-rental (worldwide). My perception is that the Europeans are more progressive and cooperative
than us in the states. Most of the really good Linux help I've gotten on
the net has been form Europe (including a wonderful sendmail
    site/expert). :-)
I think, if Forte is availaible for LINUX than a big beng goes through
the IT-Market. Many firms just wait for a OO-orientated 4GL-Development
environment to distribute their business-processes to many little
servers which are cheap and powerfull. It is than a question of
less money to use a big machine or just 10 or 20 LINUX servers (which are
cheaper and faster).Well, as I was indicating above, people who are cost conscious might be
searching for lower cost alternatives to Forte itself.
Sorry for my enthusiasm on this mailing list, but i'am
so happy to hear from this and want's to cry it out all over the world:-)))))

So, who says that all reactions have to be between 4 & 6 (5 being
neutral)!! Don't apologize. If you're excited - be excited! That's what
    life is all about.
