FrameMaker and Arabic

Does Framker support right to left text?
If so in what version of FrameMaker does it work in?

A year ago on the tekom conference I was told that Miramo will support publishing of FrameMaker files which are translated into Arabic.
I do not know, if this solution is now available. And I do not know how complicated or expensive this solution will be.
I had talked to Corinna Kinchin from Miramo [email protected] and Kapil Verma from Adobe.

  • Displaying both Hindi and Arabic numerals in Oracle 10g PDF report

    Hi….
Oracle experts told us to ask “In how many ways we can do it in oracle?” instead of asking “Can we do it in Oracle?” , I need ONE way to solve the following problem, it toke to much time and I don’t know if it can be solved !
    The problem:
Can we print in - Oracle 10g reports - a PDF report with BOTH Hindi and Arabic numerals?
Well, at design time everything is fine, you can use right-to-left, left-to-right and the print preview is showing BOTH Hindi/Arabic numerals fine, but when I tried to produce it as a PDF, unfortunately its not, means its either all Hindi or all Arabic numerals !
I tried everything possible, environment variables: NLS_LANG, REPORTS_BIDI_ALGORITHM, and REPORTS_ARABIC_NUMERLS, setting Digit substitution to Context in windows regional settings, uifont.ali is modified properly according to metalink note, but nothing solved this issue!
I noticed something, when I used the DESTYPE=printer and DESNAME=PDF995 (one of the PDF printers) , it worked fine , means the problem could be in the generic PDF generator of the Oracle reports server,
But even with PDF995 you still need to feed the file name, which is not suitable for multi-user environment that need the report to be displayed via web browser.
    Does anybody face this before?

  • Bullets Problem while printing English and Arabic in Single Layout of SF

    Hi,
I can able to print Arabic (RTL) and English(LTR) in single lay out of a Smart Form.
The issue is my bullets of English font is starting Right side instead of Left.
My log on language is EN and my Form language key is AR.
Actually I have divided my form layout into two( English and Arabic).
I would like to print English font bullets in Left Side .
    Any suggestions to achieve this?
    Advance thanks.......
    Regards,
    Suresh

    Try to draw label itself
    componentToBePrinted.paintAll(g2d);
use translate() method of Graphics to position the label.
One more thing to try is to set the same font
    g2d.setFont(label.getFont());

  • FrameMaker and Printing

Strictly speaking this could be classified as a bug fix, but I'm going with feature request.
Adobe should rip out the current print routines in FrameMaker and replace them with the same ones that work so reliably in InDesign. I (and probably every other FrameMaker user on this planet) am totally p***ed off by the whole  "ensure your default printer is Adobe Acrobat [Professional], download and install this secret framer's business hotfix from Microsoft, get all your fonts into this sequence, wait for a full moon and pray to the sun god" experience.
The present File > Print and File> Save as PDF process is totally Borked!
Example: I tried to print a 20-page FrameMaker 8 document yesterday after saying the requisite number of Hail Mary's (and I'm not Catholic). And yes, FM is up to date, as is Acrobat and Win XP. Crashed every time. So changed to using the HP4300 PS (emulation) driver and saved to file (as .ps), then ran the result through Distiller. Success! But that's even sillier than trying to tell a customer that Windows Vista will run bug-free on a Pentium 4 PC with 1GB !
    Enough, already!
Stop explaining what position the user should assume (without even offering KY lube to ease the pain).
    Just fix it!

    Hi Laurence,
If you can produce PDFs from the AdoebPDF via ID and AI by printing, then I'd suspect that the driver is probably ok. (Note: from ID and AI, it is better to SaveAs PDF, since these have their own internal PDF generation capabilities.)
Also, with FM8, if you're making interactive PDFs (i.e. not for press), then it is ok to do the SaveAsPDF route, since FM has some post-processing modules that kick in to clean-up the .tps file prior to handing it over to Distiller. So, the process is no longer is identical to printing to file and distilling.
On the FM side, make sure that the tagged PDF setting is turned off in your PDF setup and have the setting for generating named destinations for all paragraphs enabled.
You also might want to download Sundorne's SetPrint ( http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm  ) utility to ensure that you always have the same printer instance (AdobePDF) enabled when you start FM.
Have you also applied the MS hotfix for the PDF font issues? Details are available here: http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2008/07/hotfix_for_framemaker_1.html
Last desperation move would be to create a new custom PDF printer instance using the Distller PPD and a copy of the AdobePS installer.

  • Framemaker and Parallels for mac

(moving this over from another thread)
We decided to go with Framemaker and mac, and I'm using Windows Parallels 5 to make that happen on a virtual machine. This works well, for the most part, as it means I dont have to leave my native (mac) environment or my mac applications including (mail etc) notifications.
I am working with Framemaker 9 - creating DITA standard xml files for a help system.  So far the only technical glitch is - the edit/undo buttons are now grayed out - unaccountably.
If anyone has similar experiences - any solutions? My current Parallels 5 is up to date with recent updates.
    thanks,
    John

    Peter,
Thanks so much for your reply.  I tried your suggestions, but to no avail.  I then spent quite a bit of quality time with Adobe technical support, and they were very helpful, and got me on my way.  Just in case anyone else with similar issues should come across this thread I will describe some of the issues.
BTW - John, now that I have FM9 running, I have not experienced the nonfunctioning UNDO command that you described in the original post.  Sorry.  I will let you know if it occurs in a delayed fashion as yours did.
For anyone who just installed Parallels and then Windows XP, what I found out is that many of the components in XP are very old school.  Flash is way out of date, Explorer is, too.  This may impair the functioning of the extractor, I am not sure.  As a Mac user, some of these issues were foreign to me.  I just wanted to run Windows so I could use FrameMaker on my Mac.
First I had to update Flash, and to do this I downloaded the latest version of the FireFox-Mozilla web-browser (or you could update MS Explorer).
Once we had all of these components up-to-date, we were still running into problems with file extraction, and the Tech Support person had me load a program called WinRAR (google it) which seemed to be a more configureable extractor than the default one that comes with the FrameMaker download.  Using WinRAR we extracted the files into the Programs folder (once WinRAR was installed, the generic box icon for the extraction program changed to a normal looking icon).  This may all be possible using the default extractor, I just don't know.
And a final for-what-its worth: before going the Parallels route, I tried installing SheepShaver to run Classic on my MacBook Pro so I could continue to run my Mac copy of Frame v7.  SheepShaver may be OK for getting your old games and simple programs up and running, but it did not seem anywhere near stable enough to get something like FrameMaker running with a long document with graphics and cross references.
Final working configuration: FrameMaker 9 on Win XP SP2 on Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on a 17" MacBook Pro with Intel Core i7 processors (April 2010 model) and Parallels 5, 8 GB RAM. Seems to work so far, I have imported my old FrameMaker 7 Mac files (didn't even have to save them as MIFs!).  Now I need to relearn Frame in the "Parallel" universe of Windows.
Time spent monkeying around with SheepShaver, trying InDesign as a substitute for FrameMaker (close, but not close enough), downloading and installing Parallels/Windows XP and trying all kinds of tricks to get iFrameMaker running and then being on-hold/on-line with Adobe tech support: 16+ hours.
Getting FrameMaker running again on my main machine: Priceless!

    Hi, Mark:
I wish everyone keeps a copy of this post, so they could present your positive Adobe tech-support experience when someone posts a polar-opposite bad Adobe tech-support experience.
D'ja ever notice that you find something that you lost in the last place you looked? Because you don't need to look further, right? Glad you got a working combination.
I didn't have any special problems installing Parallels, Windows XP, and FrameMaker on my Mac (hardware and OS described in another post on this thread,) but I've been bi-platform for a long time. Actually, I began with Virtual PC on a much weaker Mac running OS 9 years ago, which I abandoned because of the poor performance, due almost entirely to the underpowered Mac. On my current Mac, I began with VMware's Fusion 2, then 3, but found it quirky enough to try Parallels5, which seemed smoother, and offered an inexpensive side-grade, followed by inexpensive deals to upgrade to Parallels 6.
I'm interested in what shortcomings you found with InDesign for your purposes. If you think not too many folks would be interested, please send private forum email by clicking on my name and looking for send private message.

  • FrameMaker and ArborText

Can two groups within the same company, one using FrameMaker and the other using ArborText, open and edit each other's documents and then bring them back into the original program?
    Thanks!
    Lisa

    Hi Lisa,
I'm currently investigating this very situation.
Historically, the big issue has more to do with the XML parser: some parsers are lax where others are strict when interpreting the spec in gray areas. You need to know where those gray areas are if you're mixing applications. This is true for lots of other programming languages as well and not unique to XML parsers (ask any software development team why they choose a single compiler to standardize their work on).
As to the other issue, Scott's right. Pretty printing can also cause problems. For the record: Arbortext does not pretty print, but it does wrap at 80 characters (historical reasons). However, when it does so, it always wraps on XML-whitespace-irrelavant places (i.e., between attribute values) or at existing whitespace nodes (space between words).
The key thing is to be aware of how different applications treat the underlying files and make sure that any post-processing code that you write isn't depending on let's call it application-specific behavior. (InDesign has a heavy dependence on whitespace.)
I also agree with Scott: I wouldn't try this with anything other than the latest FrameMaker. Adobe has done some amazing work to make it really XML friendly.

  • RoboHelp for FrameMaker and FrameMaker 8

I still use the legendary, yet discontinued and unsupported, "RoboHelp for FrameMaker". However, when I installed my new Tech Comm Suite and FM 8. RoboHelp for FrameMaker would not work with FM 8. I know this is a long shot, but does anyone know a workaround to get the defunct RoboHelp for FrameMaker to work with FrameMaker 8? Please do not suggest using RoboHelp to convert the files. That engine is terrible. Also, RoboHelp for FrameMaker, four years later, is still better than mif2go and ePublisher by Webworks.

    Mark,
I meant RH for FrameMaker, and ..
"... RH for FM uses skins, it creates a web help system with a collapsible/expandable TOC, integrated client-side search engine, a better interface for mapping of styles and including or excluding conditional text, and it publishes to a web server. There are many other features."
You can easily substitute RH for FM with ePublisher and add quite a bit more. Since ePublisher to a great extend relies on XML there are so many other cool things you can do.
I am NOT saying it is easier, just that I like it more, and that it supports all of FM's features (incl. 8). The jobs I'm doing at the moment in ePublsher cannot yet be made by RH for FM. (Also I'm integrating both FM and Word and some xMetal XML output into the same help system!
But again it's a matter of opinion. And what you need to accomplish
In a recent seminar by RJ Jacquez from Adobe he admitted that the Tech Com Suite (and RH for FM) was an entry to the market and that they had some way to go yet for RH to 'compete' with ePublisher.
On the price side I quite agree. WebWorks has some pretty steep prices. Which at the same are completely and utterly impossible to understand. I have been given threee different prices for the same solution! Just to mention.
    keep smiling

  • Robohelp 6, Framemaker and WebWorks integration?

I'm responsible for technical documentation at my company.
Yesterday I received an email about Robohelp 6, and decided to
    check it out.
I've used Robohelp before and quite liked it. It's very
useful if you have an existing documentation base in Microsoft
Word; owever nearly all the companies I've worked at that have a
substantial documentation base use Framemaker and not Word as their
standard documentation platform, for a wide variety of reasons.
So, I'm a little disappointed to notice that Robohelp 6
really can't be used practically with Framemaker. Sure, I can
translate all my files to MIF and import them, but then this forces
me to go ahead and translate a lot of documentation manually (the
functionality to do a batch format conversion just doesn't exist).
It also forces me to keep two sets of documents (you can't generate
TOCs or IXs from MIF files apparently). That's just not acceptable
considering that the same company makes both applications.
Evidently RH6 isn't even able to use Framemaker to translate
documents on the fly the way that a third-party application like
    WebWorks is able to do.
Seriously, I can't even say that the products are poorly
integrated, because they're evidently not integrated in any way.
This wouldn't be so bad if Frame 7.2 included the decent
version of WebWorks that used to be included with Frame 6.x,
or was even compatible with that version! But it's not. You
can't use Frame 7.2 with WebWorks. You're stuck with using
ePublisher, which isn't even close to an acceptable replacement as
it's a huge downgrade from the previous bundled app.
So, another online help solution is a dire necessity here,
and Adobe, despite owning both the Robohelp and Framemaker, is
either unable or unwilling to make both work together for a reason
which really escapes me. The one FAQ entry on the subject is beyond
vague and noncommittal and smacks of a half-answer designed to
"stop the technical writers whining about this".
Additionally, considering that Adobe itself is still to this
day bundling Quadralay products with Framemaker, wouldn't it be the
logically expected thing for Robohelp to be able to import WebWorks
and ePublisher projects, at least in part? Yet I don't see any way
in which this can be done.
Robohelp 6 is not a cheap product. At a grand a seat, it
costs more than Photoshop, despite being a much simpler product
(certainly in technical terms). I'd LOVE to be able to recommend
that my company buy a few licenses, but this is really not
something that I can do at this time, nor do I foresee a time when
I'll be able to do so unfortunately.
What can I, as a senior technical writer, expect Adobe to do
to resolve what I see as a serious impasse here?

Hi, tonyemond and welcome to the pond
You may not be aware, but Adobe only recently (within the
last year or so) acquired RoboHelp in the Macromedia deal. I can
understand your frustration and many of the issues you raise are
being addressed in the next version of RoboHelp which is being
developed as we "speak". In fact, it is so far along that you are
invited to join the Adobe RoboHelp pre-release (beta) program for
    the next version.
    You can find details here.
    Adobe
    Technical Communications Blog
I got to attend the sneak peek sessions at STC in Minneapolis
last month where Adobe showed many new features. As you may know,
there is a new version of Framemaker in beta as well (and Adobe
Captivate, too!). So, it takes a while to integrate these
leap-frogging targets. The wait will be rewarded however.
    Enjoy!

I think you should be able to do it like this (very psuedo):
set the pane type to html,
for your text, have a String with something like:
    <html>
    <div align="left">english</div>
    <div align="right">arabic</div>
</html>I don't know the exact html for this but something like the above.
Then set the whole string into your pane.

  • I bought an IPhone 4S in Tripoli, Libya. Even when the brochures (in English and Arabic) said that it has FaceTime, this app is not in the phone.

    Hello:
As I said, I bougth my IPhone 4S (it's my first IPhone). In the brochure inside the box, it is mentioned FaceTime Application (in both English and Arabic), but the Icon is not there. I checked with another collegaues that also have the IPhone and they have the icon to run the app, but not my phone.
I would like to solve this issue, and I believe that Iphone should have a technical solution for it.
    Regards and Thanks in advance!

Check Settings>FaceTime>On and Settings>General>Restrictions>FaceTime>ON. On the 4 &amp; 4S FaceTime is accessed through contacts.  Go into your Contacts, access the contact you want to FaceTime with and you will see a tab at the bottom of their contact card.  You can also access FaceTime by going into your Phone app, select dialling keypad, dial number, press call and an option for FaceTime on the keypad will appear.   It should be noted that FaceTime has been removed from iPhones sold in some Middle Eastern countries at the express wish of the respective Governments.  This article may also be helpful http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4319.
