Free subscription/ Push notification question

I've been reading up on posts in regards to the notifications sent through the Folio Producer.
From what I understand, hitting notify will send the blue "A new issue of _____ is now available" notification that appears once they open the Newsstand app.
Is there a way for this notification box to appear without the user having to open the app?

  • Universal Apps and Push Notifications (Question on both Store and Phone app)

    I have a Universal App and trying to implement notifications. I have an Azure Notification Hub and the code in the app.xaml.cs (shared) file that is creating the channel and binding to my notification hub. This all works great for the Windows Store app.
    However, I don't receive any notifications on the Phone app (running in the emulator). I am wondering if this is because the code to create the PushNotificationChannel is only registering once (the Store app) and has the same URI as the phone app. This line
    of code is what I am referring to:
    var channel = await PushNotificationChannelManager.CreatePushNotificationChannelForApplicationAsync();
    Since this is by application, and I am essentially running the same app twice on the same machine, via the phone emulator, is only one URI being generated for this?
    Thanks for any assistance.

    When you created the push notifications in the Azure, you chose the code fr Windows Store, not Windows Phone. as you mentioned you having a universal apps.
    Hint: Did you enabled push notifications for local testing ?
    This is the 4 steps to have a successful Push notification integration with your app
    Register your app for push notifications
    Update the service to send push notifications
    Enable push notifications for local testing
    Test push notifications in your app

  • Push Notification questions

    Hi,
    I have been undergoing some push notification issues and I would like to have some doubts cleared out before taking incisive action;
    - it seems that we cant get push notifications for a Newsstand app working on iPad1 with the latest supported iOS for this device installed (5.1.1). Is it an unsupported feature? Because it seems that it works fine on other devices with latest iOS installed;
    - Also, some users complain they dont get push notifications delivered. I believe this is an users iPads configuration issue, since I get them working on some devices I checked, but it would be nice to have better arguments for it.
         I would like to know if the Notify feature on DPS works only if user had not yet opened the app and received the custom notification for a new issue available for download. If, after checking it and downloading the issue, it wont receive the Notification through DPS and app wont show the bullett counter (or, if newsstand subscriber, the NEW banner wont be displayed on latest cover). Having this feature working on this scenario would help me on testing users notification issues;
    - users complain that exclusively iPad mini dont get any notification at all. Their iPad mini rendition is adapted from the normal iPad (1024x768) - due to similarity in screen size and pixel density. I suppose it operates the same as the iPad, but I would like to check it anyway.
    Thanks,
    Pedro

  • Push Notification question

    Would Gold Support be able to assist with an issue I'm having with our APNS Development Certificate? If not, besides the iOS forums where I've already posted, is there a good place to look for potential assistance? (The problem is I don't see a key associated with the certificate in Keychain Access so I can't generate the .p12 for my final step in the Viewer Builder).

    You're using Apple's tools to create the certificate, so you might want to try the Apple developer forums. But first, I would try a couple things. Close and reopen the Keychain Access utility (you might even want to restart your computer). Then use the import command in the Keychain Access utility to import the .cer file you downloaded from the iOS Provisioning Portal. If the key stil doesn't appear under the certificate, revoke and delete the push certificates and try again.

  • Any benefit to free subscriptions outside of Newsstand?

    Situation: We have a client who will publish free folios to a free multi-viewer app. The client wants the app to live outside of Newsstand.
    What we know: Free folios show up in the app as soon as they're published. But, Apple offers the ability to configure free subscriptions.
    Our question: What's the benefit in configuring free subscription for non-Newsstand apps? Or, does Apple simply require free subscriptions for free-folio/free-multi-issue apps to live in Newsstand?
    Thanks, as always.
    Josh Penrod

    Apple created the Free Subscriptions option specifically to enable apps with free content to work in Newsstand. I see no benefit in setting up free subscriptions outside of Newsstand, and I don't even know if it's possible.

  • Push notifications for YouTube subscriptions?

    I frequently use my iPhone and iPad for keeping up to date with all the channels i am subscribed to on YouTube. The trouble is, I find the official YouTube app is so awful for, ironically, watching videos on (the quality constantly fluctuates even when on a strong, fast fibre optic line) that I don't bother to use it anymore. One thing it does decently is showing channel subscription activity though, but I still think it's missing something - push notifications for subscription activity.
    My question is, is it possible to receive push notifications for new channel uploads using RSS, which can then show up in notification centre? Or anything of the sort which will allow me to receive subscription updates on my iPhone and iPad? I know you can get emial updates for subscriptions but that's really messy for my inbox, and my iCloud storage space is running out fast!
    Thanks in advance

    Im madly waiting for that. For me, after 5 generations of blackberries; this is the biggest downsize of the iphone vs. a blackberry. With an unique OS, the iphone could be the best, not just phone; but the best electronic device ever!
    Apple needs to fix that before the Bold, Storm and HTC releases. If not potential customers will go on other directions. Each time apple release a nice application or firmware, we the customers; start to post about it everywhere... That's free advertising...

  • Push notifications for Pro subscription non-newstand apps?

    I'm struggling to determine the answers to a couple of questions as different sources seem to suggest different things, so:
    We have a DPS Professional subscription, not Enterprise
    We're creating a multi-issue application
    As we aren't publishing content on a schedule, we don't want to create a Newstand app
    Are we able to have push notifications to indicate to users that new content is available to download?
    I thought I'd read that this was possible, but that the notification (for now) would be limited to a badge on the app icon indicating the number of new pieces of content available. Now I'm not sure.
    If it **is** possible, does anyone know of a guide to the right settings to apply when setting up the app in DPS App Builder?
    Lastly -- assuming it is possible -- do push notifications show up in the development version of the app?
    Cheers,
    Keith

    Aha. Thanks Bob, that *probably* explains why no notifications are showing up in my development version.
    I'm curious why push notifications don't work in the development version? Given that we all (me especially) have the capability to make the occasional mistake even *after* reading the docs, it's a bit worrisome that it's (near) impossible to test notifications.
    I mean, I think I've done all the right things: I have the push certs generated and exported, have enabled the app for push in iTunes Connect and I hadn't generated mobileprovision files until after I'd done that so they should be all present and correct. But ultimately the only way I'll know is to submit it to Apple and push the notify button. Which makes me nervous...

    Go to the site and look for an unsubscribe link. Or, contact the site and ask them to stop.

  • Push Notification Multi Folio without subscription

    Is it possible to use push notifications in a Multi Folio App without subscriptions?
    I read once that a subscription is necessary to send push notifications.
    Thanks
    Haeme Ulrich

    It's the other way around. Push notifications are required for Newsstand subscription apps, but subscriptions aren't necessary for push. You can add push notifications to non-subscription apps. There are lots of examples, including DPS Tips. Every now and then, you'll see a red badge to indicate the number of new or updated folios.

  • Push notifications and tag subscriptions suddenly stopped

    Push notifications and registrations have suddenly stopped working (working fine for 4 months). I cannot figure out why. Can someone please help?
    The only change I made on the server is to delete the TodoItem table (from azure example, which I'm not using any longer).  Here are errors showing up in the mobile services logs:

    I'm glad it's working for you again.
    It looks like there was some
    potential issue yesterday that includes Service Bus, but I'm not sure if it also affected Notification Hubs.
    It's always a good idea to go and check the
    service status page when anything weird starts to happen.

  • Question about push notification

    I am currenty on a cap plan with limited amounts of Internet. How much internet approx does push notification use? So that at least I have an idea of how much I can use mobile me.

    It depends on how much email you get, the size of messages, and how often you update contacts and calendar. In general push will use less data than fetch, because fetch establishes a connection every 15 minutes (or whatever you have it set to). Push only establishes a connection when there is an update to be synced. Unless you regularly get large attachments your email usage will be pretty small, and correspond to the total size of the emails you send and receive. Web browsing and use of data-intensive applications (like Google Maps) will be the vast majority of your data usage.
