Free Verizon WiFi install problem

Trying to install free wifi. I am able to DL. It runs the test for connectivity, but when it checks for system requirements I get a message that my system does not meet minimum requirements. It says that my OS does not meet the requirements. I am running Windows 7 (64 bit). Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I have it running on 32-bit Win 7 Ultimate RTM bits.  Haven't tried 64-bit.  Had some errors with the installer telling me I needed to upgrade to Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP2 or Windows 7.  Not sure why it had issues detecting the Win 7 OS.  So I right-clicked the resume installation icon on my desktop, hit properties and set compatibility to "Windows Vista SP2".  Voila!  It finished the install and is running.  Make sure you do not check the "Run as Administrator" box.  I did that and the app told me that I was not logged on as administrator!  Something is screwy with that app.  Incidentally, the account I was logged in under did have Administrator privileges.  Don't check the box and you'll be fine.

It looks like Verizon has turned on the ability to register for access to free Verizon WiFi HotSpots.
Verizon Wi-Fi for High Speed Internet Verizon Wi-Fi* is a free service that enables qualified Verizon High Speed Internet subscribers to access the internet at thousands of public places known as Wi-Fi hotspots. Totally agree...I was excited that Verizon was finally allowing free Wifi access for premium high speed subscribers (something AT$T offered over a year ago) but this was short lived after finding out that my netbook running Linux  (Ubuntu) was not on the list of operating systems (an extremley short list) I assume this will change and they want to get to all of their primary OS users out of the way first. Disappointing to say the least. There are alot of your subscribers that are looking for alternatives to the infamous "Windows" especially on their mobile devices. I hope they will provide these users with options as well.

  • Free Solaris 9 Instalation Problems

    Dears Sirs,
(if this is not the forum i should post this, someone could please redirect me?)
I have the following HD configuration (I'm writing dev's in Linux style because I am completly new to Solaris)
/dev/hdc <- six partitions, three are primary, one is extended and the other two are 'inside' this extended one...
/dev/hdd <- two partitions, the first is having some bad.block problems, so i'd better not touch it
I want to install Solaris on the second partition of /dev/hdd, which is my second IDE slave disk. But the instalation program looks for Solaris partitions only in /dev/rdsk/c1d0p0 (i guess this is the name)... I would rather not install it there, but in /dev/rdsk/c1d1p0 instead. But when it detects I have no Solaris partitions on hdc, the only option I have is to quit, fix the problem and latter come back to the instalation program... anyone got any clue?
    Thanks in advance...
    Luiz Eduardo Guida Valmont

A weird decision I made when I chose to have my HD's in the second IDE... so weird I can't remember now (I must have been asleep at that moment). Well, in fact I will change it, anyways.
I am quite versed on Linux today (in fact I only have winxp because my brother needs it - if I lived alone I would have Gentoo Linux only) and (NOTE: I have managed to access my other HD through Solaris9 install xterm and create a 4.4GB partition there, which I guess will be enough)... and when switched back to Linux today I found that Solaris9's fdisk made some changes which Linux's fdisk "didn't like", let's put it like that. I guess the logical/physical start/end of the referred partion were different. BTW, hdc is the master HD in the second IDE and hdd is the slave HD on the second IDE. I wanted to install Solaris on hdd, but I can only guess it is impossible... I have an alternative IDE scheme in mind... which is the following:
hda (master 1st ide): HD <- with Linux and WinXP
hdb (slave 1st ide): CDROM <- the one I use less
hdc (master 2nd IDE): HD <- one in which I'd install Solaris9
hdd (slave 2nd IDE): CD-WRITER <- which I use the most
With this scheme I guess I would optimize the use of the IDE's and I woudn't have a master waiting for a slave or a slave waiting for a master most of the time... well, it's guess anyways...
    Anyway, isn't there a command like "/sbin/cd0_install --install-into=/dev/rsdk/c1d1p0" this???
    Thanks,
    Luiz Eduardo Guida Valmont

  • Verizon Wifi now works on Mac?

Read this blog and would love to know if any qualifed Verizon customers can verify if this change actually works.
    http://wyang0.blogspot.com/2012/01/verizon-wi-fi-for-all-devices-mac-linux.html

Is there an answer to this?
(please no uninformed answers from people who do not understand the issue)
This is a sore point for Verizon hight-speed FiOS  subscribers who are promised Version Wifi Hostspot access as a "free" extra benefit of paying extra for high-speed FiOS.
Macs can access  "Verizon WiFi hotspots"   (in fact often (always?) provided by  Boingo, but not accessed as a Boingo user)  with Verizon's special Windows-only access manager  *IF* running Windows natively (bootcamp), but *NOT* with Windows running in a Parallels or VMware virtual machine running under OS X.
This is because  the Verizon access manager connects directly  to WiFi hardware using the native widows WiFi driver, while  a virtual machine only has a virtual network interface to the Apple  WiFi driver that runs when the machine is booted into OS X.   (The native windows wifi driver in the virtual machine is not connected to the WiFi hardware, so the Verizon access manager fails)
I used to have a bootcamp installation of windows *just* to access the "Free" Verizon WIFI access (in aiports with boingo) that comes as a "free extra" with high speed VerizonFiOS subscriptions.    (Native OS X access to "free" Verizon WiFi for high-speed FiOs subscribers has been "coming soon" for at least three years!)
    Is it here yet?
    (I suspect "no")

  • Wifi certificate problem - free public wifi

    Hi
I use a free public wifi access point at work. When I connect, there is a popup that states:
The certificate for this website is invalid. Tap accept to connect to this website anyway.
If I accept, I get redirected to https://1.1.1.1/ , where I have to tap accept to the terms and conditions.
On my macbook, I get the same error about the certificate, but I was able to install the certificate on the macbook, and I no longer have the problem.
I then tried to install the certificate on the iphone, by exporting it from keychain, and emailing it to my gmail imap account.
When I tap on the attachment, I get this error:
"Profile could not be validated. Profile is missing Version Number."
I use another university wifi access point, with which I have done the same procedure, with no issues.
Is there any way to modfiy the certificate, or to force the iphone to accept it?
    Thanks

System Preferences > Network > (click Airport in the list on the left) > click Advanced > Airport tab, select "Free Public WiFi" in the list and click the - sign at the bottom.
If you're prompted to join that network in the future, click No.

  • New MacBook, Free Public Wifi Question

    Hello All:
My aunt, who is in her seventies, bravely purchased a MacBook today. Leopard is loaded up. She has to wait until mid November for fiber optic to be installed in her building in NYC (no dsl available), so I looked at what Airport might find, and it seemed to find one unprotected network and then displayed, below a thin gray line (like the one that separates the list of networks from options like "Join Other Networks) the words "Free Public WiFi." Having failed to connect to what I thought was an unprotected network, I set my sights on this Free Public Wifi. It would not connect and asked for a pw. Is it true that the password for anything called "free public wifi" are those very words ? Any advice ? Does anyone know if there is a genuine free public wifi signal with a range around Penn South in NYC, on W 25th, between 8th and 9th ? Or know anything else she could try to ride the unprotected (aka the neighbor's) network ? I got an "an error occured" message from airport for that one. Thanks in advance for any responses to these many questions !

I travel a lot and find my Macbook will connect to some open networks fine and will not connect to others. The problem is you do not know how the other end has their router set up.
It may be an unprotected network, but the user may have limited the number of connections able to connect to the network, or restricted the number of available IP addresses for that connection.
The most important thing is be very careful of any network that says "free" or "public". I have read many articles about people who will set up a false networks in an attempt to get your personal info. You most likely will be able to connect to the network, but will not have internet access. Be careful.

  • When will MAC O/S be supported on MiFi (Fivespot) device to access the Verizon wifi hotspots?

I just got the Fivespot for Broadband internet access for my laptop.  I've had it about a week, and tried the dedicated network access from home, and an internet cafe using both the USB connection, and the wifi connection.  Both work fine, and speeds are very acceptable.
When I tried accessing the Verizon Wifi Hotspots--I realized they are not available on a MacBook, since you can only access the VZ wifi hotspots using the VZ Manager app.  After I read the manual, realized that I could only access the VZ wifi Hotspots from Windows O/S.  Good thing my MacBook has a dual OS boot (I never go into Windows anymore unless I absolutely have to--like in this case).  As a side note, I had to install and setup the FiveSpot again in Windows--let me just say--even though I didn't encounter any issues--the process went much smoother using the MAC O/S.
Anyway, got VZ Manager up and running on Windows, followed the instructions to update the Verizon Wifi Hotspot locations, and then connected to the wifi location that I was in, which was a local Barnes & Noble.  Please note that all Barnes & Noble, and Starbucks offer free public wifi through 'attwifi'.  Thinking that the Verizon wifi hotspot would provide a faster connection speed and performance, I decided to try it.  Well, the response was dismal and poor--I tried to download a 22MB file, and the connection speed showed a paltry 7 KB/minute; in the public library, I usually get a speed of 100KB/minute, and the attwifi public access usually results in 50KB/minute downloads.
Disappointed in the so-called Verizon wifi  hotspots speeds.
Does anyone know when this will be accessible via the Mac OS?
    Thanks!

Ironically, turning Airplane Mode on disables streaming, but still shows your entire library when shuffling. However, the unavailable songs skip, like they should. But could still be tapped to download, if there were service. I wish there was a way to separate playback from having music available for download.

  • Nano install problems. Works on USB 1.1!

Twelve months ago I went through the getting an IPOD to install properly problems with my son's IPOD, on his all singing all dancing new PC. Only finally resolved this by installing via the firewire port rather than USB. Therefore it was with some trepidation that I recently got a Nano for my wife's birthday, but hey I thought someone like Apple would have got their act together in the interim and installing should be straight forward. Have they? NO! Tried installing the Nano on my aging Pentium III which has a USB 2.0 PCI card, and for which all other devices plugged into it worked OK. Couldn't even get Windows to properly recognise it "A problem occurred during harware install your device may not be working properly". Tried Apple's suggestions and other users suggestions all to no avail. Firewire install option is not a possibility with Nano, but finally thought why not try one of the USB 1.1 ports on my aging computer, and guess what it installed first time and works without any problems. Transfer rate is not to bad either 850 songs in 1hr 10min. The only slightly different thing I did (which some other users also say) is not to re-boot the computer at the end of installation when it prompts you to and start using Itunes straight away and do some downloading then re-boot later.
Not much comfort to users with newer PC's but if you have an older computer with a USB 1.1 port and have install problems, try it as it may work for you as well.
Like every one else with install problems on PC's I say "come on Apple" individually or together with Microsoft please get this sorted out. My view of Apple was that they have great products (still true) that are easy to use (still true) and install without problems (patently not true).
    Pentium III 800   Windows XP

Gosh, I have tried this many times. Over several days. I have also reset the shuffle, which as far as I can tell, consists of turning it on and then off.
Last night, it started updating the music via the keyboard USB 1.1, which I know takes forever. Then it lost communications and quit.

  • The Mystery Of Free Public WiFi

Almost everywhere I travel, I see a Computer-to-Computer network listed call 'Free Public Wi-Fi'. Clearly that's not what it is (oh, and I can see it now, in some hotel in the armpit of Ohio), so I guess it must be some bizarre PC phenomenon that has lots of Windows users broadcasting an ad hoc network called "Free Public Wi-Fi". So, I'm just curious... does anybody know exactly what's behind this madness?

    SeaBeast,
I assume your answer is well intentioned, so thank you for trying to be helpful.
In all my time of traveling, I have not seen a genuine wi-fi network called 'Free Public Wi-Fi'. Free networks in hotels tend to have some other name. The one I am using right now is called "hhonors4", for example - it's in a Hilton hotel. The "Free Public WiFI" I am talking about appears in the Mac's list of Computer-to-Computer networks, indicating is not an wireless access point at all, but another computer, and is therefore very unlikely to be a form of wireless access.
I've done some digging around, and it seems this is some kind of attack intended to dupe people into creating a computer to computer network, thinking they are getting free Wi-Fi access. On PCs, it's harder to spot that this is not a wireless access point (I understand Windows calls these 'ad hoc' networks and uses icons to distinguish them from WAPs). Given how many of these I have been seeing, there may be a virus at work, infecting PCs in a way that has them trying to create wireless networks called 'Free Public WiFi' without their users realizing it, for what purpose and at what risk I do not know.
There's an article that talks about this at:
    http://www.scmagazine.com.au/feature/3233,airports--a-threat-to-identity-securit y.aspx
It makes a big deal about airports, but I have also seen these networks in other places (like this hotel), which makes me think it is not a deliberate act of the PC owner, but rather something that results from an infection. The article is not terribly conclusive.
This is different, but related to, honeypot attacks where wireless access points are set up, often at airports, with the deliberate intention of getting IDs and other data from unaware users. More about these at:
    http://www.netstumbler.com/2004/02/16/wirelesshoneypottrickery/
So, I'm still trying to figure this out, and would love some definitive information from somebody who knows, but I'm pretty sure no one should follow SeaBeast's (presumably well intentioned) advice and actually connect to one of these networks. (I suspect PC users are the ones at risk, as few people bother to code virus for the less common Mac, but that's a risky assumption.)
Oh, and by the way, if you do connect one time, just to see what happens, your Mac will remember it and 'helpfully connect' you every time it sees 'Free Public WiFi' forever more, and without telling you. To solve that problem, you need to change your Network Preferences.
I'll keep researching away, but would be delighted if anybody who already has this mystery solved could post their findings.

  • Verizon wifi hotspots and android devices

Are the Verizon wifi hotspots available for use with use with anything but the extremely limited options verizon supports with its silly "wifi connect" tool. If that is the case - it would seem that this preticular feature is about is about as useful as  a gallstone.

We even sent the Tablet back to Verizon and received another one.  The problem is the same, so I know it's the Tablet.   I borrowed my Parent's JetPack and we had incredible internet.   So, I know it's not our Location or our Laptop or Ipod!!
Yes, we have called Support countless times.  They have us check a different option or they think they have fixed it on 'their end', but to no avail.   HELP, we are so frustrated.
You might want to post about this issue at the Verizon Wireless forum instead: https://community.verizonwireless.com/
My advice for that though would be to double check your tablet to make sure the firmware is up to date. While it's apparently now illegal to unlock your device, if the device is already unlocked you may want to consider changing the ROM on it if you're so inclined. Sometimes the manufacturers's run of the mill OS has weird bugs like that.

  • Verizon DSL install hijacking Safari and Apple Mail

    This is my first post.
warning: it's long, just trying to include details
    I lost all my bookmarks/folders in Safari -- after a Verizon DSL install-induced browser hi-jacking. See http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/?p=78
for a story that captures my own experience nearly to the last detail. But, unfortunately, unlike the blog author my bookmarks.plist was not a back up of my extensive bookmark collection -- it was a big zero, like some other responders to that reported.
I am just your basic user, and couldn't follow the code discussion toward the bottom of the blog, it's over my head. But, although not knowledgable, I am desperate and persistent and rarely accept "can't be done" answers, even if I don't really know what I'm doing and keep getting that same answer.
I tried all the standard suggestions so far, searching .plists, searching my hd for anything safari, anything bookmark, anything .html. Read many of the discussions on lost bookmarks, tried everything I could understand how to do.
I stumbled upon in the ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari over a thousand files with crazy number/character names that all have suffix ".webbookmark" I probably did have over 1000 bookmarks. When I double click one of those .webbookmark files in that folder, a webpage springs forth in Safari, one of my former bookmarks. Also, click in the finder on one of those ~.webbookmark file and 'get info' and it shows the .html file name and bookmark name for it.
I believe this is somehow my old bookmark collection, and not a history cache, for various reasons: upon clicking, I recognize the webpage that appears and I know bookmarked anywhere from a few months ago, as well as some oldies, but have not visited recently. Random spot checking seems like sites I recently visited but did not bookmark are not showing up.
Would not be fun to double click every one of the 1000+ .webbookmark files in the metadata/Safari to open the page it represents and then "add bookmark" in Safari, to restore my bookmarks. Is there some automatic way of doing that? Am I not understanding the metadata folders enough and have tricked myself into believing they are my real bookmarks and not history or useless stuff. It's totally possible my ignorant forays and fleeting glimpses (but not, out of the corner of my eye....) are fool's gold.
Can someone let me know whether this is worth pursuing, and if so, how, and if so how so in plain terms because of my limited knowledge and floundering around without understanding what I'm doing and what it means.
I know, I know, I should have backed up before I did the *&^@! install, I should back up before I do anything, and do it regularly anyway. Don't laugh too hard now, but get this, when I did back up before, I didn't know what I was doing and just backed up "documents" folder (see, told you I was ignorant; but, older and wiser now...) But I had no idea something like connecting DSL would screw up my browser (and my apple mail -- that's a different awful story too, still unresolved) and who knows what else.
No, I have not used another browser since early 2005, and wasn't as 'bookmark crazy' then as I've been the last few years (or my life wasn't as complicated then and I didn't need to bookmark a lot of important, and I mean important, as well as obscure sites, that I don't need on a daily basis, but do need, but don't want to search through thousands of google hits to find the right one, when I realize I need it again...). Yes, sure, i will salvage what I can from IE and Netscape although they're way incomplete and frozen in time of simpler days.
A thousand curses upon evil Verizon DSL provider who thinks browser/mail/etc. hi-jacking is fun and smart PR. After this disaster, do they really think I'm enthusiastically telling everyone to use them?
I will appreciate any help. (and it's understood if the real answer is "can't be done;" worth trying here though) Just point me to the right discussion if this has already been attended to.
    Thanks!

Hi Starman and Rachel, many thanks for replying, although I was praying someone was going to hand me the magic bullet! Nonetheless, it was useful you confirmed my suspicion that the mysterious metadata cache I stumbled upon while floundering around in desperation, did have some bookmark information for me, but also, unfortunately, that there was no quick and easy way to transform it back into a bookmark list, or know whether it really has what I need. Rats. Seemed worth asking the experts though, and it was.
Starman -- yes, in 2005 I used IE and Netscape, so I was able to salvage bookmarks from there, but unfortunately since 2005 my life became extremely complicated and the most important bookmarks are from that lost window of time. (Why didn't Verizon trash those browsers and bookmarks too, or instead of, Safari? Figures. They somehow just knew how to go straight for the jugular.)
Rachel, thanks for the suggestion about using BBEdit, etc., but I'm too amateur to know what those are or how to use them, but if I did, it didn't sound like it would necessarily be easy or a guaranteed success.
The IT helpdesk at the university I work for mulled it over and they too told me basically what you two did -- no obvious solution; some custom scripting might be able to do something, but that was beyond the scope of their help services.
So... looks like I am just going to have to open that metadata cache folder and start clicking and bookmarking if I want to find out if it is even worth doing and restores the most important bookmarks from the past 2 years. Maybe do 20 a day or something when I'm brain dead anyway after work. If not, there's always plan B -- spending a lot of time googling to find lots of little obscure needles in thousands of haystacks.
    Such is life.
I haven't had the strength yet to deal with what happened to my AppleMail and have resorted to using webmail. Time to search the Mail discussion groups. I've had a lot of Mail problems since I started using it 2 yrs ago and the thought of disentangling another Mail problem makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. It's even more infuriating when the problem isn't even related to something kooky in Mail, or something crazy I brought on myself, it is sheerly the result of Verizon's malicious activities.
Thanks again for your help, it is wonderful when people freely and altruistically donate their time to share their knowledge, and their brainpower, to help each other.

  • Can't connect to free pubic wifi.

For some reason my imac won't connect to free public wifi.
I have no problem jumping on other open signals and use an airport extreme at home without problem.
I have it set to configure IPv4 using DHCP and have the standard extra server numbers. I've turned off IPv6.
Is there something wrong with my network settings that is preventing me from getting on the public wifi?

I'm referring to one of the many free public wifi areas in NYC. For instance, I can be in Bryant Park in midtown and my partner can get on the internet but not me!
This is what Bryant Park tells me about using their wifi:
To use the Wireless Network, you will need a laptop or handheld device with an 802.11b/g compatible wireless card or built in 802.11b/g wireless capability.
    Configure your software
    1. Configure your Wireless card to the following:
    Network name/SSID – bryantpark.org
    Mode – Infrastructure
    Authentication – Open
    Encryption/WEP – Disabled
    2. Configure your Network settings to:
All TCP/IP options – DHCP or Auto
    3. Configure your Web Browser so it is NOT set to use a proxy server
    Connect to the network
    1. Launch your web browser. The Bryant Park Wireless Network portal will appear.
    2. Read the Terms of Service, then click “I Agree” if you choose to proceed.
    3. Your Internet home page or the page you requested will load.
    4. Start surfing!
