Freeze up when opening Appleworks

For some reason I can open my Appleworks files and view but if I go to change or make a new one all I get is that spinning wheel which alternates periodically between rainbow and the quartered black and white. The only way I can use these if I convert over to Windows format. I have tried disk utility, Disk warrior, kicking and swearing. Any ideas?

Welcome to Apple Discussions
You have run into the "Recent Items bug" that has been around since AppleWorks 6 was released in March, 2000. It can make it appear that AppleWorks has frozen or failed to launch. The user tip by Dale Gillard, AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?, explains a lot.

  • Pages crashes when opening AppleWorks

Pages crashes when opening an AppleWorks document. How do I fix this?
    Regards

    Try this:
Make sure IOS is updated to latest version
Reboot device by pressing both the home button and sleep/wake (power) buttons at the same time for 10-15 seconds until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go.
If that doesn't work then reset the device by going to settings/general/reset/reset all settings

  • Is anybody elses itunes freezing up when opened?

when i open itunes, the rainbow loading wheel pops up and i cant do anything and have to force quit itunes. This only started after i got the new update

Since updating to the most recent version of iTunes I'm experiencing the same type of issue. In my case it appears to be related to iTunes and virtual memory. I've seen it gobbling disk space just when open, not being used, with nothing playing. In the space of a couple of minutes 4Gb of disk space evaporated. The app. shows as not responding in the Dock pop-up menu. Force quitting freed the space again. Left it running yesterday and it eventually ran out of disk space. There is an attendent slow-down in performance of the whole machine (naturally enough) with lots of SPWODs.
I've tried reinstalling and I'm considering reverting to the previous version if I can.

  • App Freezes in when opening a link in a pdf displayed in StageWebView, is there a solution to this?

When viewing a PDF in a StageWebView on ios6 iPad3, opening a link is setup to open externally. This works on tapping links, however holding down on the link, and pressing 'Open' freezes the app (forces you to close the app completely and reopen). Is there a way to fix this behaviour? Or is it possible to block out the dialog from even opening?
    protected function onLocationChangeComplete( _evt:LocationChangeEvent ):void
      trace(" onLocationChangeComplete: " + _evt);
                                  _evt.preventDefault();
                                  navigateToURL(new URLRequest(_evt.location), "_blank");
It works perfectly fine in ios7, though I haven't tested in ios5.

He was asked the security questions because he was trying to download content on a new Device. Apple instituted this new security policy a couple of months ago.
You are correct in that you cannot consolidate iTunes accounts into one account. I think that your best bet at this point would be to contact iTunes. There is probably no other way to resolve this now.
Use this link and email iTunes Support. They will respond but be patient, as it can take 48 hours.

  • Adobe Reader XI freezes computer when opened from Excel hyperlink

My computer has been frozen multiple times after opening a pdf from a hyperlink in Excel. Sometimes it randomly freezes after reading the document for a while and sometimes it freezes when I try to close the document. I have Adobe Reader XI 11.0.06, I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS, and Excel 2010. The mouse will still move sometimes once things freeze up but clicking doesn't work and alt+ctrl+del doesn't bring up task manager either, so I have to hard reboot. Anyone have a fix for this?
    Thanks in advance.

The first thing I would try is to disable Protected Mode in Adobe Reader [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

  • Preview freezes up when opening a pdf

Preview freezes when I open a pdf. I have to do a force quit to move on. Help

    Any PDF, or just one?

  • Pages freezes up when opening

I'm using an older version of Pages (4.3) and an older OS X (10.7.5), but this has been happening sporadically for a while. Usually, a restart has corrected the problem but not this week.
When I open Pages, all the windows I left open last time are opening… good, this is what's supposed to happen.
But then, a progress bar appears in the centre of the screen, and everything freezes up. I can't even quit out of Pages without doing a Force Quit.
Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas?
(So far, I'm opening pages docs as pdfs in Preview, then copying everything to Word to get done what I need to get done, but this is clearly not a good long-term solution!)

Hold down the shift key when you launch Pages '09 v4.3. Try saving, and closing some of your open documents, too.
Any reason you are not exporting your Pages content to Word .doc, and not opening that in Word? You can also open Pages documents directly in Preview.

  • Why is Photoshop CC freezing indefinitely when opening files?

Anytime I open a file in in Photoshop CC it will freeze for indefinite periods of time, even when my laptop is left for hours. A few updates ago, the program worked perfectly smoothly, even with multiple large files opened, but even small ones now make it freeze up. I end up having to force close the program in Task Manager because no other programs will work at the same time when this happens.
I don't know what I'm doing or what might be wrong with my laptop, but the program used to work like a charm and now it doesn't. I haven't noticed problems with any other programs. However, I am running a trial program right now instead of the full version like I was before.
Why might this be happening and what can I do about it?

This is more likely to do with your operating system than Photoshop, even if other applications are able to save OK.   We can see you are using Windows, but what version, and how long has it been installed?  And what are the hardware specs?
Something that might cause similar problems would be if the operating system was being starved of resources, like if you have Photoshop > Preferences > Performances set with Photoshop using 100% memory.  If you are using Task manager to close Photoshop, have it open to the Performance tab so you can see what is happening when you try to save.  Is memory and/or CPU maxed out, for instance?

  • Firefox freezes immediately when opened - can't do anything!

I have Firefox on my old Dell laptop which runs Ubuntu 10.04 (I can't upgrade to newer Ubuntu version because the hardware doesn't work with it - already tried.) For some unknown reason yesterday it started freezing when I tried to use the bookmark button and the Firefox dropdown menu (so I couldn't do a manual update.) I went to the Mozilla website and found instructions to do a reset, which I did. Now it is 100% worse because I have absolutely NO browser on my laptop! The Mozilla Ubuntu page loads and then absolutely nothing after that - completely frozen. I am writing this on my desktop. As far as I know there is no other browser on Ubuntu so I can't do anything at all online. Oh, before resetting I went to the Mozilla website and tried to download the current version and it downloaded and saved a bunch of files in a Firefox folder but I couldn't get it to run or anything. Is there something I can do with that Firefox folder to make it work? Or can I download Firefox on a USB drive and install it on my laptop from the drive? Somebody please help because I have no Internet on my laptop! Thank you.

In your Firefox folder look for the Firefox binary and click on that to run it. If you can find it It should run even if not fully installed and lacking a launcher.
These are the instructions for installing Mozilla Firefox
    * [[Install Firefox on Linux]]
I've got rid of my unsupported versions of Ubuntu but IIRC some old LTS versions did not update Firefox.
As for your old Dell not supporting a current version of Ubuntu: I would have thought the System requirements were pretty low. Possibly it is the Graphics and support for the fancy Unity desktop that is the problem, but you could try without that. This is not a Linux discussion forum but look at for instance

  • Can't open appleworks as an attachment

When opening appleworks 6 in an email attachment, it says the document is locked and to open as a copy. This happens every time I try to open an appleworks 6 attachment in emails. Is this a fix for this? It shouldn't ask to open as a copy and why is it locked?
    Thanks

    Hello
It is not specific to AppleWorks.
Every file attached to a message received thru Mail under Mac OS 10.3.x and dropped on the desktop get the "read only" attributes.
You may change that on a document basis thru the Show Infos Window in which you may set the file permissions to Read-Write.
An other formula is to use the "Save" button available in the header of a message with attachments. With this protocol, the files get the Read-Write permissions.
Late process, drag and drop the small paper-clip (which sit on the left of the attachments marker) on the desktop. The attached files will be dropped on the desktop. With Tiger they are Read-Write but, I don't know if it works the same under 10.3.x

  • I updated to Safari 6.1 and now it freezes when opened

Yesterday I updated to Safari 6.1 and now it freezes when opened, although the overall system stays up.  I updated to the latest Java and iTunes 11.1.2 at the same time. When I open Safari now, it pauses for a few seconds without going to the home page and then I get the spinning beach ball.  I get two messages:  One says that the plug-in for SplashID Safe has not been tested with this version of Safari (a message that I had been getting before the update and never caused a problem).  The other message says, "Crash Protection  It appears that Safari didn't quit properly.  Do you want Glims to re-open your tabs anyway?"  It gives me a choice to click "Cancel" or "OK".   I have tried clicking them (before the beach ball appears) and it makes no difference.  The version of Glims I am running is out-of-date.
The only available crash report is almost a month old and therefore is of no help.
I made a back-up with SuperDuper just before updating and can reverse the update if I do it soon, but I would like to get this working.
    I would appreciate any advice.
    Bill

    >>The version of Glims I am running is out-of-date.
    How do I uninstall Glims?

  • Adobe Reader freezes all browsers when opening a url to a PDF containing form fields...

There is an issue we are currently experienceing with Adobe Acrobat 9 (updated to the latest version) where ALL BROWSERS (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari) on each of two different systems (a MacBook Pro with Mac OSX Leopard and a Sony Vaio Laptop with Windows Vista) where the application will freeze up and crash the browser when we view a .pdf file from a url if the .pdf file iteself contains form fields.
At first I though it may have been specific to Mac OSX and this MacBook we were trying to view the document on, but the same issue is now occuring with a new Sony Vaio laptop (running Windows Vista) as well.
It seems like it is able to open .pdf documents containing form fields when they are stored locally, but when trying to access them via a url, the program will freeze up.  Sometimes it will eventually work if you had previously opened a .pdf prior to opening it via the url link and sometimes it doesn't.  And it seems to only be related to .pdfs containing fillable form fields (others open fine when accessing them by a url)
Obviously it's become quite irratating and I'm hopeing I can find some insight on this support forum as to what may be causing this issue.
Previous versions of Acrobat (installed on the MacBook) opened this very same .pdf file (url) fine before upgrading to version 9.
Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

  • Acrobat 9.3.4 freezing when opening specific PDF

I have a specific PDF file that when opened from the local computer causes Acrobat to freeze (adobe launches, but then hour glass with blank screen).  Other PDFs open just fine.  I have tried multiple computers, and every computer with Acrobat version 9.2.0 and above freezes.  I am however, able to open this file using Acrobat version 9.0.0 and 8.
I tried to mirror settings from Edit > Preferences from a 9.1.0 install to a 9.3.4 install with no luck. Repairing the installation didn't help either.  Uninstalling and reinstalling works, but that's only because it puts it back to version 9.0.0 and as soon as it gets patched to 9.2.0, I get the freeze again.
I'm out of ideas at this point.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Phil

Mine is doing the same.  Ever since the 9.3.4 update my Mac Adobe Acrobat Pro will crash (beachball) whenever editing, such as adding bookmarks, or scrolling down the pages of file.  Have tried multiple times to contact Adobe, but with no luck, and no call back or response.  Considering moving to a different PDF platform if I cannot obtain technical help through Adobe.

  • NEED HELP ITUNES FREEZES WHEN OPENED PLEASE HELP

    hello all
whenever i open itunes on my macbook, the loading pinwheel comes up and doesn't go away until i quit itunes or turn off my computer. my itunes will 'freeze' whenever i open it and will not let me play songs or anything. please help me!

There are a lot of things that could cause this and your songs are rarely in jeopardy when the issue is iTunes so don't worry.
If you could give us your iTunes version number, and the OS version you currently have those would help narrow a little.
Did you install or change anything around the time that this started happening?
Also explain exactly what happens. does the itunes window open than hangs with pinwheel or does the application bounce like it's going to open then hang instead.
I would, even if just for good maintenance, repair permissions by going to your utilities folder opening Disc Utility selecting your HD from the left and clicking verify disc permissions. Also make a new user to test to see if iTunes opens there, if it works in a new user it's an issue with one of your user specific files, and there would be much less to sort through.
More info will help a lot in figuring out whats going on.

  • Adobe Acrobat Standard/Pro freezing when opening large PDF documents

Ok, I have a tough one. Adobe Acrobat X Standard/Pro keeps freezing when opening large documents that exceed approx. 50 pages. These PDF documents contain large images and graphs for mining purposes, but no links. The issue impacts multiple users on multiple laptops/desktops. We have tried the following:
    - Uninstalling/re-installing Adobe Acrobat
    - Disabling Enhanced Security in Acrobat Preferences
    - Resetting local user profiles
    - Changing Reading Preferences to view current visible pages only
    - Installing Adobe Acrobat XI
This issue has only occurred after upgrading users to a Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit Operating System.
The only possible solution I have managed to find is changing a registry key that permanently disables the Enhanced Security options in Acrobat. This solution however, only worked on brand new user profiles. Resetting user profiles throughout our entire company is not something we are even going to consider.
If anyone would like more information that I have missed, please feel free to ask.

Another possibility to check is the free space in the TEMP folder. I believe Acrobat uses the TEMP folder for temporary storage. You might even consider increasing the size of the TEMP folder. At least this is something else to check.
