French punctuation in Pages

I wonder if anyone has seen the following problem already:
I just purchased Pages. I need to edit documents written in French. In French, quotation marks are not "" but two arrows, sort of like << and >>. Plus, there is a space after the open quote mark, e.g., << this quote >> and before the close quote.
Pages tells me that this sign is a form of a paragraph (in Special Characters). This is false.
Also, in French, colons and semi-colons and question marks have spaces before them, between the word and the punctuation mark.
Although I have gone through the Inspector in Pages to choose French as the language (Text + More + language), and also of course selected French as the language on the top right of the computer screen, still Pages will not apply French quotation marks or French punctuation.
Does this mean I have to go back to MS Word (which I would like to get away from)?
Merci d'avance.
Thomas

Yes, I have now done that, and Pages comes up in French, and the French quotation marks are also the default quotation marks.
As Yann pointed out,
You are no more efficient than Apple engineers
I type "Yvan" and yo copy it as "Yann"
Since 1943/12/31 I'm really attached to my true first name !
however, they are incorrectly typed because they come down with no spaces after the opening quote, and before the closing quote. In other words, a glaring error in a French language text, and thus completely unuseable. Of course, one can manually add spaces but then publisher typesetters will have all those to undo....
Sounds a bit surprising. If the spaces are available, the publisher tool is foolish if he add other ones.
I'm flabbergasted that something as basic as that is not right in Pages.
It's basic for a Frenchy of France. For others, it's an old foreign feature ;-(
How can it be sold?
(1) Because many users doesn't take care of that.
(2) because the localization is not treated seriously by Apple.
10 days after the delivery of Pages 4.0, I reported localization oddities.
The application is in version 4.0.2, some global oddities where corrected but localization ones are always here.
It's really pityful (of course our dear peterB will continue to claim that I always say that all what Apple does is perfect!)
Surely the software writers cannot have made such an error.
Who may introduced such a feature if it's not one of the software writers ? Maybe it's the road-sweeper

  • How do I use the french version of pages?

    I bought pages from the app store.  I was downloaded in english.  how do i use the french version?

    Apologizes to English users but it seems that the question was posted from France.
    Bonjour

  • Problems with French Characters in Page Title

    Here is the problem
    When using Duplicate Page and trying to set page titles with french characters (or other non standard characters for that matter such as qoutes) The resulting output does not display correctly.
    I thought a work around would be to us the HTML escape codes in the title dialog when creating the page  however it appears that Incontext then goes and attemps to escape the ampersand part of the escape code during save.
    so for instance when trying to set a page title such as Whistler Live! prépare la scène using the following escaped version
    Whistler Live! pr&eacute;pare la sc&egrave;ne
    The resulting HTML saved from incontext looks like this
    Whistler Live! pr&amp;eacute;pare la sc&amp;egrave;ne
    and the title does not display correctly.
    Incontext sees the & which is page of the HTML escape code and they automatically replaces that with &amp;
    How the heck can we set HTML Special characters in our page titles - any ideas?

    Hi Corey
    To answer your questions I am on windows 7 IE 8 and also tried in firefox 3.6
    backend is windows 2000 / IIS 6 / Coldfusion 8
    I am able to enter the characters in the dialog box but during the save they are altered
    I created a basic test page with nothing but the following code
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:ice="http://ns.adobe.com/incontextediting">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <title>test</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <div ice:editable="*" >
      <p>Test test</p>
    </div>
    </div>
    <script src="/includes/ice/ice.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    </body>
    </html>
    saved it as test-characters.cfm (coldfusion page) and tested it out
    problem was still there however when I save the page as a .html file and test it out the problem is no longer present
    So the problem seems to only occur when using .cfm pages (even if there is no cf code on them)
    I am going to send you a private message with access to my test pages in case your inclined to take a look
    Thanks for you help so far

  • French spacing in Pages

    Hello everybody,
    Is Pages capable of dealing with french spacing after ; : ? ! signs, as it is stated in french typography rules ?
    For instance, in MS Word, an unbreakable space is set before these characters.
    Thanks for any tips or pointers.

    Feature unavailable.
    It took some years to get correct French chevrons (with space) at System level (not in Pages at this time).
    I think that it would be time to ask for the described feature when iWork '11 will be available.
    It's too late to embed changes now.

  • Have IOS5 and new Pages version. Spell check in French does not work

    Pages works fine on my IPadI, but how can I get it to spell check in French, used to work fine with other version.
    Checked my preferences on my IPad, they are french. What to do?
    Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Checked and yes I did have Pages in French and had the French keyboard checked on my IPad preferences.  Your suggestion reminded me of that "world key". Read something about it, long time ago.  Never used it before but when I taped it, it brought me a choice of keyboards, so now I can go back and forth from English to French on my Pages texts, and all that without going back to my system preferences!
    Thank you for the comment, helped jog my memory.

  • How to create 2-page parallel autoconnected flow tags...

    FM10 (from TCS3), unstructured. Advanced user.
    I want to create a chapter template with two flows that appear on either the left pages (only) or the right pages (only).
    Currently, we have a number of conditional text content identifying audience-specific material. I am trying to set up a bilingual template with left pages French and right pages English (20% smaller text frame). We may use a text inset for English, and a text paste for French (to enable some fine-tuning page break adjustments.). At publish time, which will be fairly frequent for multiple reviews, I want to use a build expression in the conditional text to only show the audience-specific content... and, thus, the page range will vary and blank pages need to be removed. Ideally, I'd like to just re-generate the TOC etc., and print.
    I tried to do a custom layout by connecting text frames manually, but it is too labor intensive.
    I also tried a little trick by setting up L/R default master pages with a very, very small text frame on opposite pages (i.e., so the text flow would "jump" from the tiny text frame over to the correct page), but FrameMaker insists on keeping at least one character in the little text frame. Grrr.
    Looking for something more automatic.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the idea, but no luck.
    I tried the graphic on the body page and the master page. I even tried embedding it in a anchored frame (Run into Paragraph and other flavors). The text would either seem to ignore these settings or just move a specified distance away from the graphic (Runaround properties) ... but always remained "linked" to the text box and hovered outside.
    The image below shows the small border of the teeny-weeny text box in the upper left corner with some text extending beyond the text frame (the main text frame can just be seen in the lower right).
    So far, my workaround involves overrides (ugh) on some paragraph styles to Start at Top of Left Page or Start at Top of Right Page. Not ideal, but works OK for now.
    Back to the grind...
    Thanks for the example. Sorry to hear it's still not "fixed" back to earlier behavior. Please file a bug report/feature enhancement request here: Wishform
    More thoughts, all untested, until you test:
    * If your formats don't need hyphenation, turn it off for all text formats; perhaps this might fool the system.
    * Try a new layout approach, something like creating the two-page spread as a single page, and using side heading paragraph formats for the left-hand page content, and "in-column" formats for the right-hand content. Apply French and English conditions appropriately, using find/replace. One problem here is that FrameMaker can't have two different page numbers on one page; in this case, it could be useful if your parallel texts are page-numbered identically. For example, page 10 French and page 10 English are both on the same spread, the current page-number system variable on each "page" is what you want. This synchronization might help during reviews. Hide one or the other language condition. Apply a different master page that uses a standard layout. NOTE: Side heading paragraphs don't break across text frame or column boundaries.
    * Find someone who can script connecting left-page text frames.

  • One page does not link to others

    I have a website with iWeb 1.1.2 that has several pages. When I click the headers at the top of each page, I can jump from one page to another, no problem.
    However, with one page, there is no such jumping. The headers are all inactive.
    Can anyone suggest how I can remedy this?

    The French and Testimonials pages are also images.
    Compare them with the other pages and determine what you did.
    My guess is that you added a style, a shade? , that turns the text into an image.
    See if there an image in the textbox.

    If so, remove all styling in the Inspector > Text and Inspector > Graphics.

    Wow, that's REALLY low. That number means there's only 6MB free. It's recommended to have AT LEAST 15MB free. Check under Options | Status, hit the menu button, then choose Database Sizes. What number is listed for Total Size at the top?
    If the Content Store is really big then that means all of the media files (pictures, videos, etc) are being saved in the device memory rather than on a media card. Does your boss have a media card to store the media on?
    Did you also change the Keep Appointments setting to something lower like you did with the Keep Messages setting?

  • Read Out Loud in two languages

    Read out loud in two languages
    stewart tower - 06:52am Feb 17, 2009 Pacific
    I work in an office that prepares many reports in both english and french. A common document will have the english and french running side by side; english in the left column, french on the right. Each language will be one story that flows throughout the document.
    A PDF is exported from InDesign. Tags are applied to the PDF and a check of the TAGS panel in Acrobat shows that each language is one story.
    What we need if for this document to be able to Read Out Loud, english in its entirety and the same for the french. However, when the document reads out loud it reads the full english column on each page but then goes to the french column on the same page.
    How can we make the PDF file read each language completely without reading both english and french for each page?
    Thanks.

    ilhanbalamur, I am not sure what you are trying to draw my attention to on this page. As I said in my post, I KNOW how to activate the Read Out Loud feature, and my PDFs are fully accessible. Perhaps there is something in the page you suggested that I am missing, but I see nothing there that will help me  troubleshoot Acrobat's crashing when I select Read to End of Page or Read This Document. Please be more specific in your comment.

  • Translation problem - using browser language

    Hi,
    I have an application with french as the primary language and english as the secondary. To switch between both, i'm using an application item.
    When i'm on the application in french (application item set to french) the login page shows correctly using the app item value. But when i'm trying to branch to a secured page, if i'm not connected, i'm redirected to the login page.
    This is ok, but the page is displayed in french AND in english at the same time. Dynamic content is displayed using the app item which is ok, but not the page items and buttons. They are displayed using my browser language instead of the app item.
    The problem seems to come from the "Session not valid page" field in the "Authentication Scheme" which I set to the login page.
    Thank you
    Patrick
