From a Clean install of 10.4 - 10.4.7 crash, again...

I had an earlier problem of my install of 10.4.7 crashing , causing a complete drive loss. But getting past that, I had a working install of 10.4.x from the original disks that came with my G5. I thought "hey lets see if it was something wrong with my 'puter before the install, or if its the new software?" I installed the combo updater as opposed to the delta updater. And well, dead computer again...
I need my system up and running ASAP, so i have determined again to go to 10.4.6 from a clean install.
Has anyone found there is an issue with added RAM, or an external drive? I need these two devices to be working so taking them out of the loop to troubleshoot is really not an option, unless they would magically cause the system 'not' to hang after the inital restart when they are reinserted.
What about other updates that are happening at the same time? iTunes, iPhoto, Quicktime? Any info if there are problems with these playing nice?
Thanks everyone... any info would be great, but I am in progress of going to a 10.4.6 install...

Well, I gave up on 10.4.7 for now- 10.4.6 works fine for me... That's it for this saga...

  • X100E clean install of Windows 7

I got an X100E nearly a year ago and have never been happy with all the extra 'junk' software that came pre-installed with it.  Sure there are a few useful items, but like many business users, I'd much prefer a clean installation of Windows so I could install the programs I've found from experience work well.
I've currently got a problem that's going to require reinstalling from the CD that Lenovo's sending me and this would be an ideal time to get the clean install I need.  The problem is, this will be an image for the entire drive that will leave the machine in the state in which it shipped originally including all the unwanted bloatware.
It's not really feasible to uninstall all the unwanted stuff - I tried this several times soon after getting the machine and had serious problems.  Not all of the stuff is uninstallable and even the items that do uninstall don't do so properly.  After resetting to factory two or three times I gave up.
How can I get the clean installation I'm looking for?  I can see from the support pages that this isn't an unusual requirement and all of the extras are available for download and installation if needed so where can I find details of how to do a clean install?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks again for your time and patience with this issue.
Even though it looks like it's much more involved using ABR, most of the procedure is just good practice even if you're not using ABR (backup etc.).  Anyway, I thought I'd give it a try last night as I'm sure going to use this again so best to get familiar.
Actually, I did download the W7 Beta file, what I meant was that the instructions are for Vista - same with the guides for Lenovo.  Also they are several years old.  This shouldn't be a problem, though as it's mostly just stepping through the installation procedure.  However, the X100e doesn't have an optical drive and I'm not sure how to get 'round this (share a drive on another PC or make a bootable USB drive and force the X100e to boot from it?).  Anyway, I thought I'd go through the preparation steps, but then I had a number of problems:
    1.  First I went to the Lenovo site to manually download the drivers as listed in the procedure, but couldn't find the chipset drivers for the mobo.  Not a disaster as I have a backup of the latest drivers from running Driver Genius backup (also all the old ones replaced by it), but I'd still like to know where to find it on the Lenovo site.  There's also mention of a 'Turbo Memory Driver' and a 'Matrix Storage Manager Driver', but since I could see no drivers of this type listed, I assume it's not relevant to this machine.
    2.  I then tried to delete the hidden partition following the steps in Hypertrophy's Diskpart Guide, but at the final step "delete partition override" I got a message saying the action couldn't be performed.  The guide assumes this will work and gives no further details of what to do if it doesn't.  I was logged on to the proper Windows 'administrator' account and also tried running it '..as administrator', but just got the same result.  There's also a message at the start of this article saying "Make sure you have backed up your OEM keycode before deleting the hidden partition."  What's the OEM keycode?  Surely not the activation key as the guides say to delete the hidden partition BEFORE running the ABR utility.  Does it just mean to write it down first or is the OEM keycode something else?
    3.  Lastly I tried to run the ABR utility itself (downloaded the ABRbeta.exe) file, but when I ran this I got this message "Can not open file 'L:\Downloads\ABR Beta\ABRbeta.exe' as archive".  At this point I gave up, but tried again this morning on a different machine and got the same result.  However, downloading it again today it works fine so at least that's one problem solved!
All I need now is a way to delete the hidden partition (formatting the whole drive is fine as there's nothing of value that hasn't been backed up) and a method of installing Windows, either from DVD, bootable USB drive or from a mounted image across the LAN.
You've already been very helpful and I can't thank you enough, but if you could give me some help with these problems and the earlier questions regarding drivers, I might have a chance of getting this job done.

  • OBEngine Service missing from a fresh install of Azure Backup

I downloaded the MS Azure Recovery Agent from the portal and registered and set up the server fine
I set up a quick backup job to test and when I came to run it I get the following error:
I have rebooted the server and still the same error
The service is missing so i guess that's why it won't run but I cant see or find how to get that service installed.
I would not have expected this issue from a clean install?
    Anyone help please?

    Hi,
My first suggestion is to reinstall Azure Recovery Agent - you can re-download it, uninstall exists one and reinstall it to see the result.
Also please make sure that port 6049 is open both TCP and UDP on the local machine via Windows Firewall. If any third party firewall is configged instead, check port 6049 as well or temporarily disable firewall just for a test.
Meanwhile obengine is a service so please test to restart it - let us know if any error occurs.
    Net stop obengine
    Net start obengine

  • Is a clean install really this hard?

    Hi folks,
I installed Flexbuilder 2 over my existing Eclipse
installation, choosing the "plug-in" option rather than a complete
install. But I couldn't debug: it claimed I had to install
FlashPlayer 9 (yes, it was already installed and working) or
Flexbuilder needed re-installing. (I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.6 on
Windows XP, fully patched). I tried re-installing Flexbuilder but
the install process quit when it saw the existing installation. Due
to deadlines, I elected to make due with Alert.show() rather than
the integrated debugger. Man, does that slow you down!
But now the deadline has passed, and I have a few minutes to
uninstall and reinstall things. So I uninstalled flashplayer, the
flex plugin, elcipse (just by renaming the directory - it doesn't
seem to have any windows hooks). Then I reinstalled Flexbuilder,
using the Complete option rather than the plug-in option.
After spending 20 minutes trying to figure out how open an
existing project from a clean install (I couldn't find anything in
the docs on that), I'm now in a different mess. When I run the
project from within the IDE, it launches Firefox against the wrong
directory path - it seems to have an extra "/bin/" in the path.
Anyone know where I fix that?
I can repair the broken path in the web browser to get the
app running, but as soon as I do, I get this error message:
Error: Unable to load style(Error #2035: URL Not Found. URL:
    blue.swf): blue.swf.

There are no references to blue.swf in my app so I really
have no idea where this is coming from.
It also can't find the debugger, and asks me if it's running
on the local machine or a remote machine. wtf? (Windows Firewall is
turned off). Doesn't matter what I say, it doesn't like it and I
have to hit the cancel button. Then my app comes up with missing
    controls and assorted broken functionality.
I must say that my experience with this product is poor and
getting poorer. Can someone help me out of the corner I'm painted
    into?
    Many thanks,

p.s. Typing long posts like this into such a small window is
    also very annoying.

I removed the Flash player via Add/Remove programs, then
installed the debug version I downloaded from adobe. You didn't
indicate whether I had chosen the correct download (as per my last
post), so I'll assume it's correct. The message window from the
    install said this:
    Output folder: C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash
    Extract: NPSWF32.dll... 100%
    Extract: NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe... 100%
    Extract: flashplayer.xpt... 100%
    Created uninstaller:
    C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\uninstall_plugin.exe
    Completed
    NPSWF32.dll landed in C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash,
rather than Program Files\Mozilla\PlugIns, which is obviously
wrong. I copied it over, and that solved the bug about "can't find
npswf32.dll". Any idea why this gets installed in the wrong
directory? Is something else configured wrong?
With that somewhat solved, we're back to the first problem -
when the application launches, I get this message pop up:
Error: Unable to load style(Error #2035: URL Not Found. URL:
    blue.swf): blue.swf.

    at ::ModuleInfo/errorHandler()
And finally, and new error: "Send Failed". This error pops up
as soon as I try to do something with my app that calls the back
end (weborb) server. I pointed to a different server and got the
same error, so it's a problem on this client. This problem didn't
start until I uninstalled and re-installed everything this morning
(see my first post for details). Now this error is sooooo generic I
have no idea how to debug it. Along those lines, are you an Adobe
employee levancho? I'm wondering if you might be able to bring in
someone with a bit of weborb experience (although I doubt it's
related, since this worked fine on my previous install).

  • Numerous EXC_BAD_ACCESS after clean install of 10.5

I've always been a clean install freak, maybe a throwback to my Windows days but anywho. I wiped my drive clean and installed 10.5 on my MBP. Customized the install and took out stuff like printer drivers, added X11, etc. Things seemed to have installed smoothly, which I would expect with a clean install however I am getting EXCBADACCESS's everywhere. Once in Finder, 6 times in iTunes while trying to add back all my music, and once in YamiPod getting my music from my iPod back onto my Mac. I'm flabberghasted and don't know where to start looking for help since this was a clean install. With exception of the YamiPod crash, they were all KERNINVALIDADDRESS's. YamiPod was a KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE. Should I just wipe the drive and start over again? Maybe the install flub'd somewhere even though I did not get any errors? Should I just go back to 10.4.10?

So some things I left out. If I remember correctly, I had also installed the following:
Windows Media® Components for QuickTime, by Flip4Mac™
    Microsoft Messenger for Mac 6.0.3
Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.0 (Beta)
    YamiPod
So I wiped my system again installed 10.5 with all the default options. Didn't change a thing. Afterwards I only installed YamiPod to get my music back on my mac and happy to report that thus far, have had NO crashes in ANY app. I was able to succesfully copy all my music off my iPod then add it all into iTunes. Next I'll start to add the other apps I use one by one, giving a few days of testing time for each. We'll see how it goes this time...

  • Time Capsule & Clean Install iMac

    Hi
I have 750GB of data to backup onto Time Capsule for its first run. It will take several days to do the first run. If I manage to do this, can I do a clean install on my iMac and use the data on Time Capsule, or will I have to start again? What I'm aiming to do, is safely backup everything to Time Capsule, then spend time removing my files. At the end of that, I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard. I had wanted to do a clean install, run Time Capsule, then add the files as needed. However, some of my files are huge iPhoto libraries that are up to 200GB! I have an external FW800 HD for SuperDuper! clone of the iMac. Apart from that, any advice is most welcome.

    wayne.andrews wrote:
I have the iMac, an external SuperDuper! HD clone of the iMac and the Time Capsule. The iMac is 75% full. Would it benefit from a clean install?
Doubtful, at 75%. First, your Mac automatically and continuously defrags any file under 20 mb. Second, unless your disk has been much more full, and you manipulate lots of large files, the drive won't be seriously fragmented.
How can I check the fragmentation of the iMac?
There's no OSX tool for that, since Apple doesn't think it's necessary. The 3rd-party tools tend to overstate the importance of any fragmentation they find.
At the moment, I am stuck. I have managed to transfer everything that I may need onto the iMac. Most of the data is from Apple's Backup application (where files were backed up onto CD/DVD). For this reason, I have many duplicated files. I don't know where to start.
Do you mean you copied the Backup files? Or used Backup to restore them? Are they Full or Incremental backups? Restoring from them can be tedious, error-prone, and "iffy." Have you ever done any Backup restores?
I could do a clean install and add the files as I need them. Alternatively, I could backup everthing I have now and delete the files. Two ways of doing the same thing - adding or removing. Either way, it's a huge task sorting out the duplicated files, and removing what I no longer need.
I could really do with some advice on how to sort through files - not how to do it, but more a guide to a good strategy. What is the easiest, pain-free way of managing a good de-clutter in small chunks?
It depends on what sort of things you're talking about. If it's 3rd-party apps, erasing and selectively restoring will probably be a nightmare. Many such apps, especially the ones that come with their own installers, put various things in various places, besides the app in your Applications folder. Unless you know what and where all those are, the app may not work right, if at all. Worse, you may not notice that for quite some time, until you try to use a feature you haven't tested. Also, there may be some "leftovers:" background jobs that no longer have what they need to run, so they continually start, crash, and re-start forever, filling up your logs and using lots of CPU.
If it's pure data, such as a very large video library, you likely won't have those sorts of problems, but it would also be much easier to just delete what you don't want.
Without knowing just how much of what sort of stuff you're looking at, it's hard to give better advice. If you have a 2 TB TC, then I'd say back it all up and start deleting; the TC should have plenty of room to keep the backups for a long time. But if you move or rename folders with a lot of content, they'll be backed-up again entirely, so you may fill up the TC rather quickly.
However you approach it, I'd be inclined to also make a full "clone" before starting; check it by booting and running from it to be sure everything's there and working, then put it "on the shelf" in case you need it in a week or a few months.
    Who is Mr Murphy?
Ah, that may be a US-only expression. +Murphy's Law:+ "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong."
The corollary: " . . . and at the worst possible moment."

  • Snow Leopard install was a clean install or an Upgrade?

I was wondering if there is a way to find out if an installed version of Snow Leopard is from a clean install or from an upgrade from an earlier version. Is there an indication on the About Apple menu as to the type of install that was performed?
    Thanks

There won't be a Previous System folder because the SL installation process no longer includes the Archive and Install option.
See my reply above. It applies when doing a normal upgrade installation of Sno.
    baltwo wrote:
There's also no Erase & Install option. All you get is install.
Sure there is an erase and install option. You have the option to erase and install. Just because there is no erase and install check box doesn't mean that there is no erase and install option.
If It was an upgrade install, that is on top of an existing installation or erased and installed and then migrated from a previous installation, then you >should note applications in /Applications that aren't shown in the install log. If you erased the boot volume and installed SL, then installed other apps, then >all of those should show up in the install log.
Good points, I think. I don't use the logs that much.

  • Imac freezing intermittently after clean install-have tried EVERYTHING!!!

Hello. I've been working about 3 weeks on my imac g4 flat panel with someone who has been trying to isolate why it keeps freezing, sometimes on startup, sometimes during internet use, usually just in the middle of nothing specific. The screen will dim and I must restart. I can't force quit anything. I've reset pram, nvram, repaired permissions, after which I just decided to do a clean install with Tiger and it is still freezing again. I would like to note that the hardware test does not show ANY errors. So, does anyone have an idea of what it could be? The mac person helping thinks it could still be ram and that I should just replace the memory. Suggestions????

Thanks...I'm curious though. Won't the apple store just run the hardware test? It's not showing errors there. Won't they then suggest a clean install which I have done already. I've completely reformatted the drive and started over from scratch. I bought a new G5, so I ended up giving my G4 to my daughter, but it's still freezing. That's what is so puzzling. It works fine for days, then it doesn't. It's incredibly inconsistent. I have not added any memory to it at all. It just has the 512 mb it came with. If you have ANY more suggestions..please share. This has been driving me insane, and there are no MAC people near me. Small town...pc users dominate here.

  • Clean Install... The Dirty Truth?

Although still happily obsessed with my MBP, I do have some of those nagging issues such as sometimes not waking from sleep, hot bottom, random crashes and the aforementioned whine.
Is there anything to be gained from a clean install?
If I back up my work, is there any risk involved?
    Thanks

I am assuming that you have done the 1.0 Firmware and 10.4.6. Software upgrades already. Well if you have done and still have those issues , it wouldn't hurt to doa clean install. And see how your MBP behaves.. many people find that sometimes that cures some of the problems if not all.
Back up your work on an external drive and do the clean install.
Let me know how you get on.

  • After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external back-up? Following Apple advice for use of Migration Assistant did not work creating similar issues leading to clean install.

After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external hard drive?
Following Apple advice I used Migration Assistant which crashed new system twice which is why I had to clean install Lion in the first place.
Is there a sure way of doing it?
I have only a few programs that I will have to install myself and that should not be a problem.
I just want my data, music and photos back where I can use them.

Time machine backups. I went to migration assistant a few hours ago and limited my selection to "users", no need for applications, settings and other files.  Stuff started moving over at a fast pace but has now seemed to stall.
I will let it run overnight as there are lots of songs and photos as well as a few movies.
If that does not work, then I will go into TM and try restore. I have restored some things in the past such a mail files and it has worked well.
The Apple fellow at the store told me to go right into TM, he may have had a point. I'll get it eventually.

  • Can my macbook pro mid 2007 3.1 AA896ll/a handle a SSD and how do I make the switch. Can I do a clean install of Snow Leopard from an original cd

Here is my problem, I want to upgrade my macbook pro mid 2007 3.1 AA896ll/a to an Solid State Drive, a Crucial m4 256 gb, I want to know if the macbook will be able to handle it and how do I do the switch. also once I install the drive will I be able to boot from my Snow Leoard original cd and do a clean install. Thank you

Coming from a 5,400 RPM drive that's nearly filled up, fragmented and deoptimized to a fresh install of OS X on a SSD will of course be a improvement.
However fresh installing OS X on a new 5,400 RPM will also see a improvement, boot up in 30 seconds.
A fresh install of OS X on a new 7,200 RPM drive will also see a improvement, boot up in 25 seconds.
A fresh install of OS X on a new SSD will see the best improvement, boot up in 20 seconds on fast SATA connections.
OS X still requires time to setup and that takes about 20 seconds despite how fast your boot drive is, that's why sleep was created.
Things to consider: The higher cost of a SSD, the limiting capacity (hard drives hold way more up), the SATA I speed limitations (slows up on large file transfers), the difficulty to scrub the SSD of unwanted data (like you can a hard drive), and it's limited write capability. Also the smaller SSD's are faster than the larger ones.
SSD's are shock proof, which is their slight advantage over hard drives.
I see a 120GB SSD in a SATA I machine as being a waste, it's too small of a storage space (500GB+ is ideal), the SATA I connection is slow and other factors that make a 7,200 RPM drive a better option in that machine.
One can get a 750 GB 7,200 RPM hard drive for about the same price and still maximize their boot time in the process, also being able to scrub their drive of unwanted data easily.
SSD's can't be scrubbed, one has to fill 50% of the remaining space with many, very small files to overwrite the free space, then do another 50% again to defeat the Trim/wear leveling as SSD's write to less used location each time. If one fills a OS X boot drive up completely, it won't function or won't boot up.
If you do this fill routine regularly with software, then you prematurely wear out the SSD as it has limited writes. Why Disk Utility doesn't offer zero or 7x erase for SSD's.
If your in the 10% of Internet traffic that's going to adult sites, then the ability to scrub the caches and storage drive of embarrassing unwanted data is a necessity. Especially in the light of software and hardware that can read the SSD of deleted data.
Trick links and redirects on poisoned sites can firebomb your Mac with some pretty bad pictures and your hidden caches as well, especially if you don't like to pay.
IT personal have at their disposal free open source forensic software that basically aggregates all the past behavior done on the machine into a nice, easy to view format with times, dates and when and where content was downloaded from.
Since one has to give up their password for repair folks to recover data and fix the machine...
I think a SSD is less of a benefit over a 7,200 hard drive for that particular model of Mac for a mere few seconds faster boot time.

  • I need to do a clean install of maverick on my 2010 mbp what disk do i use and how do i move certain files from an external hard drive

I want to do a clean install of maverick on my 2010 mbp.  I need to know what disk to use and also how i take certain files off my external hard drive and put on my computer.  When I was having problems with my airport they did a clean install and they pulled files of my time machine.   however they forgot to put the partition back in for a windows side.  Originally I had Parellels on my computer.  After my external hard drive got corrupted i called apple and they fixed the problem but didn't have me set up the time machine except for the external hard drive.  Now my only back up is from the external not from the laptop.    I am not sure how to do any of this.  I am not computer savvy...PLEASE I NEED  HELP>

First, you need to make a backup of your MBP onto your external drive. I suggest you start by cloning your MBP drive to the external drive:
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
This clone is fully bootable and also contains a clone of your Recovery HD.
Second, you need to do a clean install of OS X onto your MBP as follows:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should accomplish your goals. You will have a clean install of OS X on your MBP and a bootable clone of your old system and all your files on the external drive.

  • I'm using a late 2006 2.33GHz imac.I clean installed 10.6 from disc then updated to 10.7 from download. Now every time my computer goes into sleep it won't wake up.Anyone know how to cure this problem please??

    I'm using a late 2006 2.33GHz imac.
I clean installed 10.6 from disc then updated to 10.7 from download.
Now every time my computer goes into sleep it won't wake up.
The only way it will restart is to pull the mains lead out of the imac, put it back and try until it will start.
This only happened after reinstalling.  Only Apple OS was on the imac and so it must be an issue with the software I believe.....
Anyone know how to cure this problem please?
    Thanks
    paul

This isn't a fix, more a workaround I used when I had wake from sleep problems that lasted from some point in 10.6.x, through 10.7 and into 10.8 (got fixed for me in 10.8.2). It seems to be connected with Bluetooth failing to wake up properly:
System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.
