FTP download speed issue

Hi,
This problem only started occurring from yesterday, but I'm getting very poor FTP download speeds.
I use a dedicated server to store my work files then download at home but I'm finding it impossible now.
Speeds no higher than 150kb/s even though I have 80mb unlimited.
If I download any test files over HTTP I get full speed, its just an FTP issue (port 54630)
I've rebooted router / reconnected etc... With no luck
Can anyone help?
Much appreciated

Are you sure you are not getting confused with Mbps  (Megabits per second) and MBs (Megabytes per second)?
Megabytes are Megabits divided by eight.
So a download speed of 17Mbs equates to an actual data transfer rate of 2.125MBs (Megabytes), which is what you are getting.
Download managers usually use megabytes and not megabits, so there is nothing wrong with your connection.

  • Super-slow FTP download speed

I recently switched from Time Warner to Verizon FiOS and it's been a whole lot better in terms of service except for one thing: FTP speed. When I log into Filezilla and try to download something, my download speed plummets to 30 kb/s and slower. I've tried switching FTP clients and saw no change, and tried accessing my ftp via Firefox and Chrome; neither option changed my slow as molasses FTP speeds. There's no problem with my connection (I'm wired, not wireless) and my speeds are reading as higher than advertised.
Is there something I'm not checking for or is Verizon simply throttling my FTP DL speed?

I use FireZilla all the time and have no problems with transfer speeds.
Some FTP sites run slower than others, but I chalk that up to slower links between "here" and "there."
I've never seen any real evidence of throttling by Verizon on any service.
    Good Luck.

  • Major download speed issues as of 2 days ago

As the subject line says, as of a couple days ago my download speed dropped to 40KB/s.  Before then, it was around 1MB/s.  Using speedtest, it said I had 26 ms ping, 1.2-ish mbps download, and 3.32 upload speed.  I'm 100% sure our internet plan does not consist of lower download than upload speed, so does anyone have any idea if there's anything I could do about this?  I mean, I can't even load a low quality youtube video while watching it at this speed, and that's just pathetic.

I seriously doubt it's the router though because if that was the case, my upload speed and ping would be bad as well.  Instead it's just my download speed.

  • Interesting ftp client speed issue

I've come across the poor ftp speeds on my home lan while the net.inet.tcp_sockthreshold = 0 instead of the normal 256. I had set it to 0 so I can force the send/recvspace mibs to 32768 for better internet operation and efficiency. I had no idea I would be sacrificing ftp speed on my lan. More detail: Lan is 100MBFD (verified), with sockthreshold =0, I get 1.8mb/sec on ftp transfers, with it set to the default of 256, the speed jumps to 8.8mb/sec. These speed ratings are produced at the end of the file transfer via the ftp client. I'm not sure if anyone else has seen this, I discovered it while trying to tweak some AFP/SMB copy speed settings.
    Power Mac G5 Dual 2Ghz/iBook G4 1.42Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.5 Gig, Rad 9800 Pro 256M

No, I've never enabled that. I got samba tuned nicely with the SO_RCVBUF and SO_SNDBUF at 32768 (confirmed by tcpdump), but my ftp get is still pretty slow, I guess I'll stick to smb to transfer data.

  • My Take on the Reception and Slow Download Speed Issue

I seriously believe that the reception problems are a result of something that AT&T has done... Here's why. I started having issues with reception variation and very slow download performance BEFORE the release of iPhone 4 or iOS4. I went to AT&T and got a new SIM. No improvement. I complained at the Apple Store about the variable reception, and the fact that when downloading, the phone got extremely hot to the touch. Because I have been a good Apple customer, the Genius replaced the phone. No improvement. I only upgraded to iOS4 after getting the refurbed "new" phone-- the new OS hasn't really done anything for me other than shorten my battery life..... I am getting pretty tired of sitting in one physical spot, and watching my signal strength go from 5-bars 3G to 1-bar EDGE to "no service" in the span of a few minutes.... Somebody had better do something about this issue, or it's back to Sprint with the new HTC Evo 4G..... Never had reception issues with them!!

It could be a bit of a design flaw but it could also be affected by iOS4.. any phone with an ariel when hold against skin makes the signal drop period! The only reason its more news worthy is because its actully part of the case.
It certainly does need fixing but a software update could help improve it for both iphone 4 and 3G/3GS. Ive heard the older models have been suffering this too.
The reception issue didnt really bother me that much I hold it naturally in my right hand and I dont get a signal issue mainly because I noticed my finger doesnt make contact with the space between the two antennas but then if I apply a finger over the space seprating the antennas the signal does indeed drop its like the two seperated antennas cancel eachother out.
But I know having to buy a case is a bit stupid when it should work without it but for a phone that cost 500-600 why the **** wouldnt you want to protect it?
Personally I love the phone the camera is awesome especially the quality of the front facing camera it looks amazing as good as the 3 mega pixel camera on the 3GS.
The best thing though is definatly the retina display, it looks beautiful. The main thing I liked about the screen tho wasnt the shapeness and quality but the fact that I found it hard to tell the difference between the black colour of the case and the blackness of the screen especially when watching a video with the black bars on the sides of the video, the contrast ratio alone is pretty epic.

  • Getting most coverage/download speed out of Three Airport Extremes & One Express

    Aloha Apple Genius's please....HELP:-)
I have been having the following coverage/download speed issues with my new network installed in a couple of our buildings.
         A) Mac gets 0.5 to 1.5Mbps download and 4.0-5.0Mbps upload and it connects to stongest signal given off by 9WBB Building #2...But Slower Speed
Sitting on the Porch or in Building #2
    Network Normal:
    Strong Signal
    Slower speed
         B) If I TURN OFF 9WBB Mac gets 15-22Mbps dowload and 20Mbps upload connects to weaker signal given off by 9WB Building #1....But Faster           Speeds.
Sitting on Porch or in Building #2
    Network limited:
    Weaker signal
    Faster Speed
    QUESTIONS:
How can I maximize the download speed or manually switch which Airport Exteme my Mac connects to with out having to power down 9WBB Building #2 all the time?
         2. Or can I tell mac to always pick SPEED over SIGNAL STRENGTH??
         3. How can I better monitor my network and speeds?
         4. Can I block users from using network individually?
I have a network set up with the following schematic:
Building and Physical Layout of Network below:

Anyways, I guess what I'm asking is if there are any settings I can use to simply allow my internet to be as fast and as consistent as possible, albeit a rather hopeful and juvenile request.
The Internet speed vs. the wireless network speed are two distinctly different things, with the wireless network speed, in almost all cases, being much faster. Of course, since most of us see "speed" as the overall time it takes to, let's say, open a web page or download a file from the Internet, it's easy for us to "combine" the two.
Unless you work with your ISP, there's not much you can do about your Internet speed, but there might be something you can do about your wireless speed.
Since you mentioned that you have detected about a dozen wireless signals, it is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference in the immediate area that is preventing you from getting a good clean signal.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like the following to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible:
    For Macs:
    o KisMAC
    o MacStumbler
    o iStumbler, or
    o IPNetMonitorX
    For PCs:
    o NetStumbler
    o WiFi Hopper
    o WiFi Owl
    o WiFi Manager

  • Adobe please, fix upload/download speed problems!

Adobe please, before all, fix the upload/download speed issues when updating folios from the computer to the servers and from the servers to the Ipad. It has been so terrible lately.
    Thx!

Or, better yet, focus on developing great software like you've been doing for years and leave the "cloud" stuff to others. I'd feel a lot better about DPS if I knew I could host it all myself.
    Thanks,

  • Q150 download speed via wireless

I really like this form factor of Lenovo Q150 and also its HD playback. BUT Youtube playback is really choppy on this machine. I used Internet Speed Test on the web and found it was 500kbps on this machine with 802.11n, while my other older notebook on the same network has 1.1Mbps with its old 802.11g.
I sort of expect much higher speed from Q150 because my router supports 802.11n. any tip to speed it up?

    thanks for the feedback.
Upload speed to me is normal, it is same as my wired desktop's upload speed (around 300kbps) My ADSL plan is just a basic one. the signal seems to be fine.
Is that possible WEP encryption affect this box more than my other notebook via wireless or TrendNet ADSL rounter doesn't like Q150. I have mix of 4 PC plus 2 Mac in the same area. download speed issue is only slow on Q150.
When I compared the speed, all computers logged on to the same internet speed test site (http://www.speedtest.net/). I will say it is fair comparison.
    any suggestion?

  • Download speeds very low =ftp tests

Hey ,, i ran into a issue here,
few servers are connected directly to 6509 to gig ports with a speeds of 1000 full on either side and they are having a slow download speeds of 11 Mbps
if i try to download an ftp from any of these servers ,,,download speeds are at 11Mbps.
in the same switch speed is good between two servers and rest of the servers operate at low sppeds.
If i try to involve another server connected to another switch,,, it is 28Mbps.
can any one help me out figure out the issue.
I am not able to figure out the issue
    Thnx

ok. if L1 is clear, try tcpdump on server and client side. maybe there are some errors in tcp communication, or something like this.

  • Download and upload speed issues

Hi I am new to the forum and I am having problems with my broadband speed I get approx 6.8mb download speed but what appears to be happening is when I surf the net the speed is 6.8mb but the problem is when I download the speed drops to max 2mb can be as low as 0.6mb does anyone know why this would be happening, I have read on the forum that you should keep your home hub on 24/7 must admit haven't been doing this usually turn it off when no one is in the house. The other issue is my upload speed is poor only get approx 0.3mb when I was with O2 before I changed to bt in the summer I was getting 1mb upload any ideas how to improve this

hi thanks for getting back in touch we have the old type of phone socket does not have a test socket
speed test result: download speed 7.10mb upload 0.33mb ping latency 39.00 ms
these are the speeds when i surf the issue is when i download the speed plummets to 2mb. and why is upload only 0.33mb when o2 on same line was 1mb

  • 2009 Macbook issue: download speed limitation

    Hi
Mi wife got a late 2009 white macbook that's driving me crazy. Despite we got a 7Mbit ADSL connection and all others macs at home (we got 2 more 2008 macbooks and a 2008 macbook pro) with the very same OS version (10.6.4) and network settings are working properly and downloading at full speed, her one looks to have some kind of speed limitation in download to around 1.5 Mbps.
The ping and upload speeds are the very same of other computers, and apparently randomly the download speed also on that computer gets back to around 7 Mbps...
I just spent the afternoon doing tests and I got nowhere but maybe I found a pattern...
    First what I excluded:
-doesn't depend on how it's hooked to the net, same behavior by ethernet or wifi in both cases the other service was off
-any other mac using the same connection is working properly, did side by side tests
-ping is always the same on both computers used for test
-it is not a DNS issue
-deleted and created a new position in Network panel
    -did several restarts, no solution
-doesn't depend on a specific app being used (but maybe apps can matter, see below)
-none of possible fixes I found online did work
-probably it isn't related to OS version or updates, this issue has likely been there since a lot of time, and over more os updates (not really sure of this, we had unrelated netwok issues and changed provider for that reason in last year, we cot a stable and uniform environment just recently)
    Now what I noticed:
-As soon as the computer is started and I open a single browser (be it Safari, Chrome or Firefox doesn't change) speedtest.net test is ok, 7Mbps download.
-work and navigate with it, it's ok, download speed remains 7Mbps
-As soon another internet using application is opened (Mail, another browser) the connection speed drops to 1.5 Mbps (this is ALWAYS the limit, no relevant fluctuation in this)
-If I close any of above apps and remain with a single browser, running tests initially report still the 1.5 limit, but shortly after (one or two minutes) the speed gets back to 7Mbps
My wife needs to work with Mail, Skype, and at least two browsers open, so this limit is giving her great troubles

    taylor.henderson wrote:
-none of possible fixes I found online did work
This doesn't really help narrow down the problem
    {quote}
doh, you are right... sorry... the possible fixes I had found around are the ones reported right before...
Create a new user account on the problem computer and see if the slow speeds and strange behaviour persists in it.
    I did, it does...
    - created a new user and logged in
    - opened Safari, speedtest returns 7Mbit/s in download
    - opened Firefox, after a little speed drops to 1.4
    - some successive test starts slow (1.4) then sometimes speeds up, but most remain at 1.4
    - start chrome too, same behaviour
    - close Safari and Firefox, wait a little (1 or 2 minutes) do the test with Chrome, back to 7Mbit/s
Then go through stuff like this http://www.gballard.net/macrant/osx_troubleshooting.html.
I went through it and did most of what's suggested there (it's a little complex because when I am not working my wife is usually using her macbook to study and needs to use it all the time)...
    - unused disk space is 95,6 GB
    - booted in single user mode and did a fsck -fy
    - repaired permissions
Nothing changed, both the behavior takes place in new user account, and in main one, where any internet using application (Mail, Skype...) opened together causes the download slow down...

    Hi,
No, it was Apple. Last night the movie (Argo) was downloaded. It took   about an hour, however it did  not open.
I can watch the preview, but can't open it.

  • Could airport issues have anything to do with download speed?

I have been experiecing at best 161KB/s download speed, not quite sure where to look for the problem, any ideas?
I have checked with two different sites that have speed tests, the results were not consistant.  End result of one was a 1.31MB/s potential.  I have been trying to download different movies, the download display estimates anywhere from 8-9.5 hours to download one movie. Help!

To rule out (or in) that the AirPort maybe the culprit, temporarily connect your computer directly to your Internet modem. Do you see significant improvements in the speed tests that you have run previously? If so, we can troubleshoot the AirPort to see where the problem may be.

  • ASA 5505 Speed Issue - Help Requested if possible

    Hi All,
I am wondering if anybody here can shed some light on any potential configuration issues with the configuration below (Sanitized). Current State:
    1.     SIte to Site VPN is up and running perfectly.
    2.     Client to Site VPNs work through L2PT/IPSEC and through mobile devices such as IPhone.
    3.     The outside interface is at line speed - approximately 5-6MBits per second.
    4.     When performing a download of a service pack from microsoft - Bit rate on the inside interface is approximately 1/3rd of the outside interface (A lot of loss). Interface shows no CRC errors and no input errors.
    5.     The outside interface shows CRC errors and INPUT errors but due to the line speed being optimal (as the client experienced via their WAN router direct (with the ASA out of the mix), have not looked in to this further. I suspect the device it is directly attached to does not auto negotiate correctly even though the interface is set to 100Mb Full Duplex.
    6.     Outside interface MTU is set to 1492, purposely set this way due to PPPOE over head (Please correct me if I am wrong). (Approx 8 bytes)
    7.     Inside Interface MTU is set to 1500, no drops or loss detected on that interface so have left it as is.
    8.     All inspection has been disabled on the ASA as I thought that scans on the traffic could have impaired performance.
    Current Environment Traffic Flow:
    1.     All hosts on the network have there DNS pointed to external IP addresses currently as the DNS server is out of the mix. This usually points to DNS servers in the US. If the hosts use this, the DNS queries are performed over the site-to-site VPN but the internet traffic is routed around the VPN as the traffic is a seperate established session. Split tunneling is enabled on the ASA to only trust the internal hosts from accessing the US hosts. Everything else uses the default route.
    2.     The version of software on this ASA is 8.2(1). I have checked and there does not seem to be any underlying issues that would cause this type of behaviour.
    3.     Memory is stable at roughly 190Mb out of 512Mb
    4.     CPU is constant at approximately 12%.
    5.     WAN and INSIDE switch are Fast Ethernet and the ASA interfaces are all Ethernet - Potential compatibility issue between standards? I'm aware they should be compatible - any body that has experienced any issues regarding this would be greatly apprecaited.
    Current Issues:
    1.     Speed on the inside interface is approximately 1/3rd of the WAN/Outside interface - download speeds are sitting at approximately 250 - 300kb (should be sitting at approximately 700-800kb).
    2.     Noticed that when the DC is pointed to the USA Root Domain Controller (Across the tunnel) latency is approximately 400ms average. (Performed using host name).
    3.     I ping the IP address of the exact same server and the latency is still 400ms.
    4.     Changing the DCs DNS address to 8.8.8.8, I perform the same ping to the same servers. Still 400ms.
    5.     I ping google.co.nz and I still get 400ms (You would expect it to route out the default gateway but session is still active for that IP on the ASA).
    6.     I ping 74.x.x.x (The IP from the resolution from step 5) and I get the same result.
    7.     I flush dns, same issue for 5/6.
    8.     I clear xlate on the ASA and the same issue persists.
    9.     I close command line, repen it, and perform the test again - latency is now back to 40 - 50ms as we would expect for non-vpn traffic.
I am currently out of ideas and would like some advice on what I have actually missed.
Things I suspect that I may need to do:
    1.     Upgrade IOS to latest version (Other than that - I'm out of ideas).

Hi all, this post can be officially closed. The issue had nothing to do with the ASA but required a firmware upgrade on the WAN router which boosted the throughput on the external interface on the ASA to 10Mbps and the inside throughput naturally corrected itself to what was expected.
Thanks to everybody who looked at this issue.
