FTP setup in Tiger

Hi all
I want to setup ftp in my G5 running Tiger 10.4.4 ,with user name password for ftp & define a particular folder or drive(local ,firewire etc.) to be publish over network(local or internet)
PowerMac G-5(DP,1GB RAM,160 GB HDD)

Setting up particular folders for ftp access is possible with the Server Version of OSX, but just a quick look at the sharing settings in client version, looks like not much control other than on and off.
You could maybe setup another user and use that account username and password ???
Not sure if there's another way...
As I said easy to do with the Server version.
Good luck though !

  • Correct FTP setup

I've been struggling with ftp setup on my os x server. I have it running but not how i want it. I want anyone to be able to download from the ftp server but not upload to it and i dont want people to require a username or password to access the ftp site. I cant see any settings options on the ftp tab of the server app. Is there some command line or am i missing something obvious???

Can you offer downloads of the files via http?  That might be easier.

  • Epson 785EPX Photo printer setup in Tiger

A customer of mine has an Epson Photo 785EPX, and when they upgraded to Tiger, it appears that it switched to the Gimp-Print 5.0.0 drivers. Nowhere in Print Setup nor Page Setup could I find a place to clean the ink heads. Three questions, does Gimp-Print give that ability somewhere?
    Do the drivers on:
    ftp://ftp.epson.com/drivers/epson10505.sea.hqx
Work with Tiger? I wasn't about to test it on my customer. Someone with a backup or someone who uses these drivers which are only rated as good through 10.2.1 in Tiger, it would be helpful to know if they are compatible with Tiger, or there is a better place to get them? And will these drivers give me control over the printer's inkjet head cleaning?

It appears Epson may be updating the drivers for this printer after all:

We'll see what happens when they do.

  • How do I use a specific host directory in the ftp setup?

I am reestablishing links in CS4 to my websites after an upgrade from Vista to 7.
I use Go Daddy and the subdirectory capability. I had a difficult time setting up the ftp connection and saw in another posting that the Host directory should be left blank. This indeed worked. The problem is that I want to control access of different designers to different websites that are contained in one hosting account. When I use the correct Host directory in the Site Definition dialogue box as I did with my setup on Vista, I get the error message:
"An FTP error occurred - cannot open remote folder [FileName]/. Access denied. The file may not exist, or there could be a permission problem."
However, the file does exist. I have tried various uses of forward slashes, in front, in back, and both, without success. I'm sure there is an answer.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mark

Can you verify that your user account has access to those other accounts?  Is this a reseller account where you have accounts under your own or is this a dedicated box or VPS where the accounts can be in different directories?  Is this a Windows or Linux box
There's a few things that could be going on, but if it ends up being a permission issue Godaddy will be the only ones who can help with that.  But just an example of a path on a Unix/Linux environment, "public_html/".  There is no leading slash but there is a trailing slash in the path.  If you are connecting to a Windows server it could be slightly different, but my only experience with Windows is in a networked/VPN environment so if that is your case I am sure someone else here can help you out.

  • Ftp setup question

sorry if this a repeat question, but i'm stumped. i've set up
a number of sites previously, and never had a problem using the ftp
with dw. my typical setup has been
    ftp host: ftp.mysite.com
    host directory: public_html/
    username
    password
    never a problem.
now i'm trying to set up a site on a new dedicated server
host and these same setting don't work. as an aside, i'm using
cpanel and when i set up the ftp user i noticed the directory is
/home/wwwcoun/public_html/, so i alternated this with a simple
public_html/ but it didn't work. suggestions please. thanks.
    mike

    Try -
    FTP Host - www.mysite.com
    Host directory - BLANK
Can you connect? If you can, tell me what FOLDER names you
    see on the
    remote folder list.

  • Non-anonymous FTP setup on Solaris 8

I'd like to set up FTP access on my Solaris 8 (Sparc) box. However, I don't want people to use real system accounts on the server to log in. Is it possible?
For example, on Widnows platform, I can install WS_FTP Server from IPSwitch, which maintains its own list of FTP users (thus no users are set up at the OS level). Can the default FTP Server on Solaris 8 do such thing? What about WU FTPD?
Any helps are very much appreciated!

    Thanks Jeffrey!
Can you also shed some lights on this:
The default FTP server setup on Solaris seems to allow a system user to go anywhere(if he has permissions to) once he ftps in. For example, once I ftp in as myself, I am in my home directory. I can cd to, say, /etc and do a get on the passwd file and read it on my local machine. Being able to read the passwd file does not do much harm, but just wondering if there is a way to restrict the valid system user to his home directory and its subdirectories once logged in.
    Thanks again!

  • FTP setup problem

Hi going mad trying to get FTP to work
    Setup as follows;
    Router
created service FTP for ports 20…21 and with port forwarding to the server IPaddress
    Workgroup Manager
    i) created a sharepoint called FTP (with subfolder FTPuser)
    ii) created a user "FTPuser"
iii) set home to the sharepoint
iv) created a group FTPgroup (which FTPuser and myself as administrator is part of)
    v) set permissions for the sharepoint owner RW-me, group RW FTPgroup, Everyone none
    Server Admin
    i) set - Authenticated users see "home directory with sharepoints"
FTP root is left at default location
    Finder
    connect to server ftp://FTPuser:password@serverIPaddress
Tries to connect with error message
"operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (errror-50)
If I change the FTP settings …user to see"FTP root and share points" I get an error that "could not connect to server because eiher the name or password is incorrect" BTW that has been check a million times.
Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated
    cheers

    Found the solution
Abandon OSX server FTp service and use the shareware Pure FTPd manager.
Works great and you only need one new user with all sites managed virtually through that user.

  • Help with FTP files in Tiger

Ever since I installed Tiger on this computer, I am unable to FTP files to my ISP. I have tried various client software solutions (Dreamweaver, Fetch, Bullet Proof). They all act like the connection times out before the file is uploaded. I am able to upload files from another computer on the same network that runs 10.3.9...but that is not a very convenient solution. I have checked to make sure that my Network settings are the same for both of these computers. Any other suggestions? I can log on and see the remove server directory...but cannot upload files.
Thanks in advance for your sage insight!
    G5 Dual 1.8 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Utilities>Terminal.
Command line will have look something like mine:
    Mini:~ rick$[]
    on the command line type:
    ftp <enter>
    (new prompt appears):
    ftp>
    On th ftp> line type:
    open [serverIPaddress]<enter>
You'll see some connection info. And a colon prompt waiting for your FTP user name
    enter username<enter>
    enter password <enter>
type ls <enter>(that's an ell and an ess)
    you'll see a remote listing.
    type a !<enter>
    and then another ls<enter>
Those are your local files. Jot the name of one you want to PUT. jot down the extension, too (JPG, TIF, etc)
Now type exit<enter> (You're back on the ftp> prompt)
    do a put...
    PUT filename_withextens.ion<enter>
    success, or failure.
    To end ftp session, type:
    quit<enter>
    To end command line type:
    exit<enter>
    then quit Terminal
Funny firewall settings might be on the mac you're having trouble with. These settings would not affect the the other 3.9 mac.
If your ftp thing works with Terminal? Time to track down Keychain problems, perhaps.
I'm going out for coffee for 30 minutes. I'll check on you when I get back I hope I didn't leave out a step :o
    [edit...nope, looks good]

  • FTP Setup (using samba share on another server)

    A hypothetical question.
First you need to know I would be setting up the ftp on a mounted drive (storage server share). The users are chrooted to their home directories in /ftp/users/username using the option in vsftpd.conf. Now, if I were to setup a user to have ftp access and shell access, is the following possible?
Their home folders are located in /ftp/users/username. Being that it is a mounted folder (I can't change individual directory and file permissions), is it possible to prevent each user from accessing anything in the whole ftp directory while logged into the computer with shell?

The way you do what you are describing is to keep the Account information in the same place it is now, but change the pointer to a User's (or collection of Users) Home Folder.
    To transition to that:
    • decide where the User's new Home will be.
    • create a new folder for that user at the new location.
    • copy the user's files to the new location.
    • change the home pointer in their account record.

  • FTP Setup on Mac Mini Server

    Hello:
First off, I am new to Mac OSX Server and servers in general.  I am trying to set up FTP so I friends/family can upload to my server. Here is where I am at...
My server is connected to my Airport.  My Airport is the DHCP server, distributing a range of IPs to the devices.  I do not have a static IP, but am using dyndns to workaround this.  Note that even though FTP services are not working, Web services are.
Created a user on the server
Updated the ACL so the user had permissions to the Share
    Enabled FTP service on server
Configured Airport for port forwarding to send to server based on IP
The issue i am having is that when i use a client (filezilla) i get a permission denied error on the share.  I can mount the share locally to my mac and edit with no issue.  Just not thru FTP.

    Thank you for the reply!
I did not have the permissions set up there.  I made it so the user i created had group access.  Then i still had no luck.  The firewall is set up and i have port forwarding to the server on my router set up.  Then i found my issue...
On the FTP service, when i set up the share permissions, i forgot select protocol options and go to the FTP tab to enable the service.  Once i did that, i was golden.
Thank you for your help again!

  • FTP setup

    Hello,
I have been trying to connect to the Web hosting server in
CS3 but have failed with every attempt. I am able to connect with
other FTP clients, however. I emailed the hosting service but they
say they do not support third party software. However they did send
me me instructions, but nothing has worked. I think the problem is
with the Host Directory field. According to the other ftp clients
    the directory is /public/
The host server is Uplinkearth.com. I have used them in the
past with the older version of DreamWeaver and had no proplems. At
that time I used the following: /user.name/domain_com/www/ that
    format doesn't work either.
Has anyone used Uplinkearth and have a suggestion?
    Thanks

Disagree. The host directory of public implies that this is
    the correct
folder name. Nevertheless, trying it with a blank host
    directory will be a
good starting test. Can you connect with a test if you do
    this, Diana?

  • FTP setup with Actiontec MI424WR router

I've been banging my head against the wall for a few hours now.
I have a FTP server/device on my network (which I can access just fine internally).  However, I'm not able to access it from outside my network.
I've forwarded ports 20 & 21 (TCP/UDP) to the device.  It prompts me for my credentials (and will re-prompt me if I type an incorrect username/password), but once I enter valid credentials it gives me error messages (IE says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage").
I also have disabled the firewall software on my computer, and set the firewall on the router to "Low", which supposed allows all inbound/outbound traffic.
But it looks like inbound gets there, it's just a problem w/ the outbound (since it gets to the FTP server's authentication process).
    Any ideas?

Probably because it's in passive (PASV) mode and using a random port.
You'd be better off to use something like Filezilla server that allows you more control of the ports that are in use.  You could then define a range of ports to be used in passive mode and forward them too.  Better still would be to use a Secure Ftp server
I'd also suggest that you don't use the standard FTP ports of 20/21 as you'll find your bandwith width being chewed up by the streams of hackers attempting to break into your server.

  • URGENT!FTP SETUP

I'm using CS4 trying to "define my remote server" using the following information, but im unsure of where everything goes. What would the FTP host be and what would the host directory be?

No need to guess your FTP details.
Your web host provides this info in the Welcome email that you receive when you sign up for their services.

  • WVC54GCA ftp setup issues

Hi, I have the camera working fine but for the use of FTP with motion detection. Whenever I try to save the information it says that it cannot save the ftp information. I think it is down to how I have written my path for the ftp location but can find no examples as to how to list it and it also only allows a very small path so typing in the full path does not work either.
Any help here wold be great please.
    Nick

Within about a hour out  of the box, I had everything working (including email alerts and internet remote access).
My only problem is getting the FTP upload to work.  No point in leaving the images on a local computer for the thief to steel.
Linksys support tells me that they only support INTERNAL FTP sites, not uploading off my local network to an external FTP site.  They claim a fix is in the works.
I don't see how how the camera knows the difference?
My FTP site is:  ftp://upload.xxxxxxxx.net/images/HomeMonitor/.  I can connect to this site with my browser and upload images manually.
My camera settings for FTP are:
    FTP Server: upload.xxxxxxxx.net
    Port: 21
    Login Name:  MyLoginName
    Password: MyPassword
Passive Mode: Disable (don't even know what this is)
    File Path Name: /images/HomeMonitor
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
