Fun experience with Novell Netware server install.

I had no clue where this belonged, since there's not a Netware Forum here...so here it is.
I just had an opportunity for a job interview today and the company uses Novell Netware, so I thought I'd install the server and network my computers with the Novell Client to refresh my memory on things. What a pain in the arse...
First of all I already had 3 OS's installed on my machine and since Netware installs in DOS, I had to figure out what I wanted to do...so I deleted Redhat 9 which I just installed, and in the process I deleted my extended partition which lost two logical drives which (my bad) I hadn't backed up yet...(No great loss...although there was some stuff there I wanted to keep I can recover it.) OK...what the heck...I figure...so I move all my partitions to the top of the drive to make room at the front to install DOS 6.22 and Netware, but alas it screwed up my Windows 2003 server (as noted in the MS forum). OK...nothing on there I critically need...so it gets nixed too! Now tons of free space and only Win98 which I don't want to delete because there is stuff on there I want to keep and backup first. (BTW - I'm using System Commander for partitioning and OS stuff).
OK...install...DOS 6.22..no probs...install CD-ROM drivers...no prob...Go to install Netware via DOS and gosh! It only recognizes 14 mb RAM available and needs 96. I have 128! What's up with that? I tried that a dozen different ways, still no joy. OK...so, maybe I should have tried my old instructor's suggestion first...Use Win98's Dos to install...OK...did it...Cool -- no more RAM issue, but I get to the Network card driver part of the install and what happens? The install proggy keeps assigning an "invalid interupt" to my Realtek Network card.
Now I have to go to my interview...that went well (I think - one can never be sure until you get the job offer)...
Come back and it's raining...that means I can't go play in my garden...that's OK though--got a thousand things to do on my computers.
In the meanwhile I bounce my idea off my old instructor to "force" the IRQ in POST -- so I changed PCI slot1 to IRQ 3 and PCI slot 2 to IRQ 5 (both were set to "auto" - I wasn't sure which slot I had my card in and didn't want to open my computer and change it so I just picked 'em both). Cool...blasted right through that part of the install. Ooops...now SYS volume won't load. Why? I don't know...I think I forgot to create the partition. So, we go back to System Commander, and get us a new partition for netware and run install again.
Now this part I couldn't figure out...made it through to the network card part and I can't believe it...it autorecognized a Kensington driver when I know for sure I have a Realtek network card. I ain't complaining...it worked...SYS volume loaded and I have a running Novell server.
Now let's see how many issues I can create trying to install the client on another Win 98 machine I need to use to type a thank you letter for the interview and get it printed! *lol
In case you missed it, there's no problem in the above post to try to help me figure out. I just thought some might enjoy the story.
It's amazing what one forgets, that he thinks he remembers...or forgot that he should have remembered...or something like that!

  • My very bad experiences with 10.5 Server

    Hi,
I feel very unhappy. After using, installing and maintaining Apple servers and clients for 20 years I am absolutly helpless with 10.5 server. I have now installed it 5 times from the scratch testing the different setup options: Standard, Workgroup and Enterprise System - always with and without actual updates. And always something else did not work like it should. Wiki,Blog,Calander was not working, LDAP was broken/corrupted, DNS went wrong and so on. Who has the ultimate "How to get all working" idea for me and who shares my experiences?
    Thanks Alexander

    Hi ademmler
I've used and supported Apple Computers since 1981. When Apple's first Server product came along that I was asked to be involved with (AS IP Manager 5) I did the same for that.
Excluding hardware faults and user error (customer's fiddling basically) I've had little or no problems.
I can honestly say the same for 10.5. Since its release I must have done at least 50 installations/deployments of varying complexity at numerous sites around the UK. Apart from a few hiccups right at the beginning my experience has been positive. The key has to lie with how DNS is approached as mentioned by Tim and David. It's also important to note that one of Leopard's minimum requirements is an active ethernet connection. This has to be an important factor especially when coupled with a sound approach to DNS. This was not the case with 10.4. I've built complex 10.4 Servers with no network connection with little or no problems.
You can't with 10.5. I've found Leopard sensitive to what is being broadcast by some routers/switches/DHCP Servers. This can also stall the initial configuration leading to instability and poor performance. Clearly there is something in Standard and Workgroup that is primed to respond to a mature network. Although it should not interfere with Advanced I've found occasionally it does.
In my opinion no Server product regardless of platform is perfect whether now or in the past. As I remember it 10.2 Server gave me far more problems than 10.5 ever has. Again just my opinion but I would say Leopard was probably released 6 months too early? Some of us can remember 10.4's first release being met with similar criticism. For most people 10.4 did not 'settle down' until 10.4.6 or even 10.4.8. In that sense it's still early days for Leopard. Although it's not that bad I also think Apple could have given us a fuller-featured GUI driven DNS/DHCP Service similar to Microsoft's offerings.
I posted something on Leopard's release that I still use at sites up and down the country:

Works every time for me. You might find it useful?

  • How to validate users with Novell Directory Server

Hi all, with iAS 6.0 SP3, how i can validate users stored in Novell
    Directory Sever?
    Thanks

    Hi
I believe iAS is designed to work with iDS which is bundled along
with the SP3 download. Also the directory server which is working with
iAS must be Nortel LDAP Schema compatible and I'm not sure if NDS(Novell
Directory Server) is compatible. What I'm trying to understand is if you
have already registered iAS with NDS and you are having trouble in
accessing the users or if you are having trouble in the installation.

  • Experiences with Forte XML-Server

    Hello,
i like to expose a Forte Service as XML-Server.
How are your experiences with this new technology?
    Here are some questions:
How many Services do you run on one port?
How many Listeners do you use?
How do you manage the xml-server ?
    Best practices ?
    Thanks for your response...
    Martin

you should put the code you typed in server.xml into context.xml
in the META-INF folder and this will fix your problem.

  • Need help with iPlanet App Server Install

We have the Fast Track edition installed as webserver on an NT box. We
have also loaded the Test Drive edition application server and we are
trying to verify its installation. I have the IP and port number and
then put in the /ias-samples/index.html and keep getting message Invalid
    URL.
Checked for the directory existance and it is there. Does it need to be
    mapped somehow?
    What are we missing?
    Thanks In Advance ~

    Hi Tom,
I don't know what is Fast Track edition of web server. Would you give
    the
webserver name and version number (such as iWS 4.1 service pack6). It
may be the case that iAS does not support the iWS. Check if the web
server is running fine by typing only the ip address. No port number is
neccessary for NT. You can try with no port number.

  • Running a Java Application on a Novell Netware Server

I know this is a strange question but I was hopeing someone could help me or point me in the right direction. I have a java application that backs up files. I would like to run it automatically at night on our Novell server. Can Java run on a Novell OS. Any advice is appriciated.

  • Has anyone had a good experience with the 4.2 install?

I only see negative reports posted. Is anyone's upgraded iPad working correctly?

Based on the lack of negative reports in the broader media, I'd say 99% of upgrades are probably working flawlessly. Remember, the media love to jump down Apple's throat for any perceived flaw, as they did for the iPhone antenna issue. No, I'd say so far this is among Apple's more problem-free launches.
As others have noted, this is a tech support forum. Gauging the overall experience of those installing 4.2 by reading the messages here is akin to taking a poll at your local emergency room and concluding that the entire population is sick.

  • Back up Mac Server with Time Machine Server installed on the same Time Machine Server

I want to back up several Workstations (“Workstations 1-4” in diagram below) and a Mac OS X Server (“MacMini Server” in diagram below) that runs “Time Machine Server” on that same “Time Machine Server.”
    Is this possible?
The MacMini server doesn’t seem to find the “Time Machine Server” for backups. I read that this is due to the fact that Time Machine backups via network are organized in another way than “normal” Time Machine backups are.
MacOS server is running MacOS 10.8.5 with server app v2.2.1(169)-
    workstations are running 10.10.1, 10.9.5 and 10.8.4

The Time Capsule and Time Machine will automatically keep backups for each Mac separate.
A user on one Mac will not be able to "see" the backups of the other Mac.
You can add a few more Macs if you wish. 4 or 5 Macs would probably be a practical limit, depending on the size of the hard drive in the Time Capsule.

  • JDev with Sun App Server Install

I'm just starting with EJB and am trying to compile a Remote interface and am getting the following compile error:
Error(5,48): cannot access class javax.ejb.EJBObject; file javax\ejb\EJBObject.class not found
I added the CLASSPATH for j2ee.jar to Windows and also included it at Project Settings > Development > Paths in JDev. The error persists.
    What am I missing?

double click on your project in JDeveloper to go to project settings.
Make sure the EJB libraries are part of your project.

  • Copy Netware server to smaller disk?

    Hello!
We have Netware server installed on 270 GB disk. We have moved majority of the data to Windows SBS 2008 server.
How can I copy Netware server to smaller disk (cca 50 GB)?

  • Mac Pro and Novell Netware

Can Mac Pro connect to a Novell Netware server/LAN?

    Naz,
There shouldn't be any issues connecting with the Mac Pro. How are you connecting today? Is your LAN on IP or IPX? What version of NetWare are your running? Are you connecting via NFA or an actual Novell Client in OSX? If it is via NFA then there is no change from how you do it today. As you know there are new 3rd party clients like the one from ProSoft.

  • Are there any problems with Snow Leopard Server (Xserve) and PPC Clients

    Hi,
are there any problems identified yet with Snow Leopard Server, installed on a Xserve and PPC Clients running Mac OS X Tiger and Leopard?
Currently I have a Xserve Intel running Leopard Server and about 12 Mac Minis PPC running Mac OS X Tiger and Mac OS X Leopard. The Xserve serves services like DNS, OpenDirectory, Software Update Server, NetBoot, etc. All users have Home Directories stored on the Xserve.
Now I want to install Snow Leoaprd Server on the Xserve, but I wonder if there are any problems using the PPC Clients? I have read something like this on a german website.
    Thanks!

We've actually found that the Server 10.6.3 DVD does an amazingly smooth job of upgrading 10.5.8. We've been upgrading our production servers and nothing has gone wrong yet. Snow Leopard employs an archive and install method of upgrading which results in an install which is very close to a clean install. So it's been very convenient for us because our servers are used as Windows PDCs and it's a pain in the *** to have to re-join all PCs to the domain if we start from scratch.

  • Novell Netware 6.5 monitoring

Hi everybody! I know about that there is a possibility to monitor Novell Netware 6.5 servers by Nagios.....
Could someone tell me.....Can i do it  by SCOM somelike....?

Currently, Novell netware 6.5 is not on supported list of SNMP network device which you can download the list from
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=26831
This means that you should create your own snmp discovery for Novell netware 6.5 snmp and correspsonding monitor OID value. The following link may be helpful for you to discover the OID value of Novell netware server monitoring using SNMP.

  • OES11SP2 Server Install - Retire Netware Servers

Planning to install our first OES11 SP2 server into an existing tree - the
idea is to run this new OES11 server virtualized on VMware ESXi 5.5
The existing tree has two physical NW6.5SP8 servers running eDirectory
    Version 8.7.3.10b (NDS Version 10554.64).
One of the existing Netware servers is used for DHCP/DNS, File Sharing from
three NSS volumes and Groupwise 7.0.4 whilst the second server is used for
    FTP services and eDirectory redundancy.
Rather than jump in at the deep end and performing a Transfer ID Migration
of our main Netware Server which would force us to upgrade to Groupwise
2012/14 at the same time I was hoping to start off slowly and initially
start by transferring just one of the file sharing NSS volumes from the main
Netware server to the freshly installed OES11 SP2 server (just so we can be
confident that everything works the way it should).
If all goes well we would then in turn over a couple of weeks or so transfer
the remaining NSS volumes, DNS/DHCP services to the new virtualized OES11
    SP2 server.
Once that's done we can then install a second virtualized OES11 SP2 server
which would be used for the Groupwise 7.0.4 system transfer and final
    upgrade to Groupwise 2012/2014.
Finally we would then delegate one of the new OES11 SP2 servers as master
replica before removing eDirectory from the Netware servers and ultimately
    turning them off.
Just wondering if this plan is workable or is my thinking too simplistic
e.g. am I going to end up breaking eDirectory and screwing things up like
trustee rights on the NSS volumes etc...
    Thanks in advance.

    Neil,
One other thought...even though this isn't the GroupWise forums... You
may want to consider migating your GroupWise files over and installing
a newer version in one step. If you haven't before, check out
Danita's upgrade guides at caledonia.net. I used them to move from
NW6.5/GW8 to OES11/GW2012 in a single step and it went quite smooth.
