Future of Apple TV

The addition yesterday of being able to buy and VIEW HD TV shows on your computer (as well as ATV) got me thinking about the future viability of the ATV (which I love). Specifically, it seems the functional gap btw the ATV and say the Mac Mini is very small now- the only thing that the ATV does that the mini doesn't is play HD rentals. But in return a mini gives you the ability to browse the web (including Hulu and the like) and do anything else you can do with a computer. Plus there are some neat apps that let you use your Touch or iPhone as a keyboard/mouse (SNATCH for one). Given the ability to now rent HD TV shows on the computer I wonder what the likelihood is that eventually you'll be able to rent HD movies on a computer? If that ever happens I think I would buy a mini instead of an ATV. I realize there is a price difference, etc. But I'd be willing to pay a few hundred extra more for that flexibility.
Thoughts?

Undoubtedly a question of when rather than if.

Most consumers wouldn't - Mac Mini is closer to a perfect HTPC type device than many with lots of benefits, but price is a huge factor - ever since DVD players have almost come free with the groceries, most consumers really eschew more expensive devices in favour of value for money provided adequate function. Yes a smaller group will prefer the versatility of a PC/Mac in the living room, but in the US at least AppleTV is a fraction of the cost of a Mac Mini, and still about half price in the UK.
The Mini is a bit long in the tooth now - an HDMI out would be very welcome on any new design IMO. You could almost envisage some convergence between the lines - better AppleTV hardware in the next generation with an updated mini as the next step up with an in-built DVD/BluRay player to cover those bases.

  • Mirror desktop now or in the future with Apple TV?

I have read that with iOS5 and the iPad 2, one can mirror their iPad screen onto their HD TV with the Apple TV2.  I have not read anything about mirroring desktop screens onto their TVs yet, and I have played around with this on my own Apple TV2 to no avail.  Can one mirror desktop content (e.g., a web browser)  to their HD TV through an Apple TV2, or do I have it right in that you can't do it?  It's always fun to speculate, so could this maybe be something to look forward to in the future?

No that,s not currently possible on the Apple TV.
This is a user to user community, no one here will know whether it may become possible, if you have any suggestions that you think might enhance the Apple TV you can send Apple your feedback here.

  • Future of Apple Configurator..?

This week I watched the session from WWDC 2013 on managing mobile devices running iOS 7 without any mention of Apple Configurator. The session video can be found in the WWDC app, downloadable from the App Store.
With the move to licensing rather than redemption codes, the heavier reliance on the MDM, and the streamlined enrollment process, it would appear that there is little need for Configurator anymore.. Does anyone know if Apple is migrating away from managing iOS devices with Configurator?

No, people are telling you that it can't be discussed because it's under nondisclosure. Developers, as is the case with most companies, sign an agreement that they will not discuss anything Apple tells them until Apple makes a public announcement, and that includes things discussed at the WWDC. If you want to be "in the know" on such matters, you need to sign up as a developer yourself. Then you will have access to material and information that Apple has not yet made public.
    As to Configurator:
    - Apple just released a new version, so yes, I would assume that Apple means us to continue to use it.
    - Nothing about iOS 7 that has not been publicly released will be known or can be discussed here.
    - No one here knows anything about Apple's future plans for configurator.
Like it or not, that's all anyone can tell you.
    Regards.

  • Look at the Future of apple TV

Download the 300 HD trailer from the Quicktime site and copy it to your apple TV. Now yo see video quality. So hopefully apple will start delivering product in 720p and get rid of the horrible Near HD quality videos, tv shows and film it is selling.
On the other hand I bought this mostly to incorporate my itunes and iphoto into my main Home entertainment set up. So I'm happy. If I need to watch TV I use my HD DVR and for Films my Blue-ray PS3.

  • IChat "Whiteboarding" in Leopard, the future of Apple's tech support?

As many have seen in the Keynote on monday, iChat in 10.5 Leopard will include a "whiteboard" feature that lets users display pictures, video, and even their live desktop in iChat. Presumably to do desktop sharing you won't need a built-in iSight as it would just take the feed from your monitor and display it in iChat.
That begs the question, will AppleCare and the whole Genius Bar system be "iChat-ized?" I forsee that instead of calling AppleCare, you open iChat and join a queue for a tech support person to open an Audio chat and a desktop sharing session. This would make it much easier for them to troubleshoot your problems, giving you a hands-on visceral way to see what they're doing.
    Thoughts on this, anyone?

    Hi Alex,
iChat answers are avaible to a selected few Applecare services based on what you actually bought.
I am not sure exactly which ones though.

No, Apple does not. What other companies might provide what you're looking for I don't know. Try searching the web for "karaoke software" or something similar.

  • What is the future for the enterprise server line from Apple?

    Hi.
I work at a company that is looking at several choices for our services. We've had a Xserve G5 for quite a while and we've been very pleased with it. Although it hasn't been a smooth ride, there haven't been any major issues that have blocked the evaluation.
However, now we are currently comming to an end of our evaluation period of different systems, and now we have to decide. The Xserve/MacOSX have it's advantages, but one issue that currently is a major questionmark is the future for the Apple enterprise line.
I'd really apreciate feedback regarding what you think will be the future for Apple's enterprise line, will it die slowly or get a new boost with the Intel switch, as I've read that Steve has stated time upon time that Apple is not an enterprise based business. Is it worth investing in Xserve/Xraid hardware or should one steer clear of Apple and choose other enterprise platforms such as Sun products based on Solaris for example.
    Thx,
    /Mysteron

Unfortunately, speculation pertaining Apple's future directions and unannounced products are forbidden here, as is discussion of their policies and procedures.
Also, it's hard to really give you a solid answer without knowing more about your particular situation.

  • In attempts to reconcile with the recent updates to Apple products/iTunes accounts, I have changed my password and settings on all of my Apple devices.  Still, all of them repeatedly ask me to sign in, and sign in again, to my AppleID.

I have a Macbook (2011), an iPad 3, and an iPhone 5.  My son also has an iPhone 4, which logs in under my AppleID.  I spent my entire day off yesterday trying to reconcile the issues with our devices.  I had not used my Macbook for a couple of weeks, as I had had to replace my charger for the fifth time in three and a half years-different story for a different time (My last Macbook's supposedly inferior charger lasted the duration of my ownership of it and then some, by the way.).  Anyway, my Macbook repeatedly asked me to log in, alternately, to my iCloud and then my FaceTime. No sooner would I enter my password for iCloud than it would ask for my Facetime password; I entered the password for Facetime, and the iCloud password would be requested, so on.  The text boxes would not go away.  Other programs' windows would not open in front of them.  I searched here and other forums, having moved a FaceTime password request to the far right of my screen & minimizing my Safari window, so as to fully see my search results.  I turned my Mail off and on, no luck.  I logged out of iCloud completely, to no avail.  Finally, I changed my AppleID password.  This seemed to work...for my Macbook.  It no longer asks me for my passwords.  Now, however, I cannot even update apps on my iPad, despite the fact that I have logged out of and back into my iCloud on my iPad.  This is NOT why have staunchly defended my choice to use strictly Apple products for the last decade.  I feel like a Windows user.  I was going to upgrade to the iPhone 6 Plus when my current contract is up in a couple of months, but if this is the future of Apple....
Anyway, if anyone has answers or a solution, I would greatly appreciate the guidance.  So disappointed in Apple right now.

Go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with your new credentials.  If all you did was modify your existing ID rather than creating and entirely new ID, you can choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted.  Your data will still be in iCloud and will download to your phone when you sign back in.

I am only 14 but my dad is a business man,and my favorite company is the apple company and I want to add all my ideas here.
I always  wondered about if apple made a gaming console and heard about the pippin and was disappointed with the failure, and i also looked at the fakes that i saw in the internet and they looked quite cool but they got to become more unique but if thats unique apple has to make its own super unique video games because xbox one is Microsoft and xbox one is my favorite gaming console because apple does not have one and i know apple   Can do better than them aslong as its unique i can see the future of apple where almost all kinds of tech could be apple and com one video gaming is a million dollar idea or something and i believe apple can raise the roof if so is done no pippin it does not sound iOS keep it i make it i play or  i gamer, apple has always bin a modern style make it look so modern that people will know that the future is around the corner and that the tech they see in the movies are possible, i know that it can be done the ultimate gaming experience become the nintendo become the best tech company because i know u can cover all areas of tech u got phone, tablet, music,pc,tv covered so u can do this!!! XD

  • What is Apple doing to fix iPhone app failure

This problem looks like a bad MS conflict error... One of the biggest reasons I got away from PC.
I have a new (now 4 days old as of this posting) 3G iPhone with all updates. It has been registered with Apple and synced with my iTunes. I have loaded free apps on my iPhone with the reasoning being that if the free apps don't work, I surly will not buy an app from the designer of a non working free app.
I have done the reset and reboot, which "some" of the apps did work fine. But all, non standard iPhone apps, crash on startup following a sync section with iTunes.
Without claiming to be a programer or even a technician, it appears that the cause of the down loaded app failure stems from the sync with iTunes and maybe poor app design. Anyone from the PC world will recognize this as a "conflict error".
At the iPhone introduction Keynote address, I feel Steve Jobs lead me to believe that is would not happen with the 3rd party development of apps. It's just not the "Apple" way. I maybe wrong in that it is not an actual "conflict error" but something else, still, it is not what I have come to expect from Apple and hope that this problem is not a sign of the future with Apple. It also appears that better "quality assurance" is needed with app development and iPhone syncing.
    My question is:
What, if anything, is Apple doing to solve this massive problem with downloaded apps and the iPhone and syncing with iTunes?
If someone could show me a link with an Apple reply to solving this problem besides reset/reboot/reload I would be a little more confident in knowing that I didn't waste good money and "TIME" in getting the iPhone.
This boot-reboot, reset, wipe it clean approach is not good, to much like living in the MS world, not Apple.

Going to the local Apple store this morning...
My problem is not uncommon as the board is showing signs of this happening to many others as well. That is where I found the restore and reboot information to try to solve the issue of crashing apps.
I understand that Apple will not "give away the cow", but letting iPhone users know that the problems they are having are being addressed by Apple is a little more comforting than nothing at all. Other wise, all the apps in world are useless and even more importantly worthless, if a person has to reset/reboot/reload just to get them to work.
IF Apple can not address the basic problems with todays iPhone apps, why should one believe that the iPhone 3.0 OS is any better? Using a PC comparison, which is better, XP or Vista. If the current iPhone OS of 2.2. what ever is not working that well (as related to down loaded apps and iTunes), will OS 3.0 be any better?
The waste of time I refer to is in going to the apps store and downloading the apps... Again why by apps if the free version does not work?

  • For those who cannot browse all titles in a genre using apple tv

spoke to apple support. this option has been removed.
may be added back with next release of itunes. it is not related to apple tv directly as many had 2.4 update before this issue appeared.
    case number 13830413
i will in future contact apple support for issues like this.
mine wasn't even under warranty anymore and they were still able to assist.
you will need to go through the troubleshoot wizard on the support website but its worth it.

I s stated to see all titles from a to z in any genre is gone. you can view up to 200 titles per genre. This results in different genres will vary by letters of films. you can actually see however far 200 goes.
apple is losing out on revenue but does not not care.
hope this clears up any confusion as there are many threads on this issue already.
Hey, your original post said nothing about only being able to view 200 movies, it dosn't even contain the number 200. All you said was the option had been removed which it hasn't, its only crippled at the moment. I agree Apple are the ones losing out because I would just randomly browse and buy films whenever it took my fancy but now unless you know exactly which film you want your stuffed.

  • How did Apple screw up the maps app this badly?

I am normally not a complainer, but rather appreciate great technology.
However, I am shocked beyond description about how badly Apple screwed up the maps application in IOS 6.
The maps application is the by far the most frequently used and most useful iphone application for me.
I rely on it all the time.  It WAS so incredibly easy to use, and almost always dependable.
Yes, turn-by-turn directions would be nice, but not at the cost of screwing up so many other critical features.
I have now had 2 extremely frustrating experiences.
The other night, I was driving home from work and using the maps application to route to a store.  I was using the voice instruction mode.  There was heavy traffic so I wanted to zoom out / around to look for alternate routes.  Well, this is almost impossible to do, and furthermore, there is much less accurate and detailed information about traffic conditions.  This would have been a piece of cake with the old maps application.
Yesterday, I had to make a trip to Pacific Sales in San Jose.I tried "Pacific" with the mapped zoomed to the general area, and it could not find it.Then I tried "Pacific sales", again no luck.  Its an appliance store, so I tried "appliances", and again no luck.
Finally, I had to log into the web, go to google maps, and find it there.
It was slow, but it worked!
1 month ago, I had the highest confidence in Apple due to their track record of deliverying great stuff that works and is easy to use.
I would never have considered an android phone.
However, this problem with the maps app has so shaken my confidence in Apple, that I will go today to look at a Samsung Galaxy III.
Maybe its not going to be my thing, but I hope Apple realizes how big they screwed up.
The Apple of Steve Jobs would never, ever, ever have let this happen.
The old Apple would have stayed with Google Maps for another year, and made this new maps app better, more reliable, and more user friendly than Android BEFORE releasing it.  It would have been revolutionarily good and would have surprised us with how good it was.
I really truly love Apple and its products.
But this is a really bad mistake and I am so fearful that its an omen of whats to come in future from Apple.
I would not be surprised if this very deeply damages Apple at a time when the competition is getting tougher & tougher.
Of all the functions on the Apple Iphone, the maps are the heart and soul.  Apple is probably right to go its own way eventually, but not like this!
It is just going to drive people into the arms of Android.
I am just curious, did Apple actually test this thing thoroughly before releasing it?
I mean, it took me only a few days to figure out this thing is total crap.
How did Apple not know this (which is a very scary thought), or maybe even more scary, maybe they did know but feel they have enough market power to get away with it?  I can't think of any other explanations. So, which is it?  Either way, its very bad news for Apple fans.

Ok, 3 more wonderful IOS 6 maps experiences to share!
When out shopping for paints, decided to visit Kelly Moore.
Used the maps app and used it to take me to the nearest store, except it was not where maps said it would be!
I called the Kelly Moore store, and they told me the maps app has the wrong town, and they have had many customers with the same problem!
Next up, I was looking for a Sherwin Williams store in San Jose, so maps took me to El Camino Real, except it took me to the wrong end of El Camino Real in Santa Clara, about 15 minutes from the right destination in Mountain View!  In fact, the app took me to Santa Clara University!
Last up, I was looking for a Chevron station.  Apps routed me to the location, but no gas station.
So, I finally decide to use google maps through the browser, and it ends up it was again the right address but wrong city!!!!
Unbelievable!  My confidence in Apple has been further shaken, to where I am about to give up.
I just can't trust their app, which is something I depend on every day to save me time, money and gas.
So disappointed in Apple right now...  It makes antenna gate look like a minor incident, which it was in my opinion!

  • HT1918 despite changing my apple twice id somebody in N. America/Canada is downloading games from my account. the website does not give me any recourse to correct this and track who is doing this. Any suggestion would be gratefully received

    Hi,
I cannot seem to find any help for a situation that has now occurred twice, despite changing my apple id on bith occasions. Twice now, once from Canada, the second time from the USA, someone has downloaded games using my account.
The website seems particularly unhelpful as to how to rectify this and Apple do not appear to want to take responsibility for helping me sort this out. any suggestions would be gratefull received.

    Hi aughton880,
To address your immediate issue, for any purchases you did not make I would report by following these instructions:

  • Photo Organization and the Future

Here's my concern - utilizing aperture to organize my projects and albums, departing from managing the file structure (which is getting impossible to keep up with) I have to assume that Apple and Aperture will always be around.
What if in the future I want to switch to Light Room, or go back to windows? I have nearly 35,000 photo's now, and I imagine I'll have more in 50 years but I have no idea if Aperture will still be around in 50 years and If I stop paying attention to my file structure, I'll lose all the organization behind my masters.
Aren't any of you concerned about the distant future? Apple could pull the plug on Aperture; somebody else could come out with somethign better; etc.

No, I'm not concerned about my file structure. The fact that Aperture takes care of that for Managed libraries doesn't mean that there is no structure. The library normally resides in the Pictures folder. If you open the package you will find the folder for all your masters - the structure there can be easily decoded. There are lots of other files used by Aperture when manipulating or displaying images. If you need to get your original photo images at some time they are there. If you shoot in RAW then you might need to worry about some future time when no one supports your camera's version of RAW, but that's a different issue. You can also, in the distant future, export your edited photos to a new location.
If you have a Referenced library then you are responsible for the storage, backup and structure of those images.
