G4 Quicksilver (2002) - Using regular speakers

Just a quick question... I am gonna get a KVM switch to toggle between my MAC and my PC. From a previous post I found USB keyboards should work as well as mice, so getting a USB KVM switch that has built in speaker switch as well.
Just got the MAC 2 weeks ago... noticed that the speaker jack looks like a 2.5mm mini.
Would this adapter likely work? the phone part threw me off a bit....

Your going to need a usb or firewire interface or a usb mic. For your 11 year old a simple Logitech usb mic might do the job nicely.

  • Using Garageband on G4 Quicksilver 2002

I have a G4 Quicksilver 2002 that I've set up with Garageband - only to discover there's no audio input on this model. Anyone have a suggestion / recommendation as to what I can use as a work around?
Primary intended use: allowing an 11 year old to record acoustic guitar and / or piano tracks.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Connecting "regular" speakers to MacPro

Okay, I had a G4 Mirrored door that I used a Griffin ProSpeaker Breakout adapter to connect my Tannoy monitors using regular speaker wire. With its internal amp, this was a great way to take advantage of the G4. Anybody know if the new MacPro has the same capability?
I know there's no pro audio port, but is there another way to connect without an external amp? I love my Tannoy's and don't just want to use "computer" speakers. Any help would be much appreciated.

What you need really depends on your intended use: tracking, mixing, movies, games, digital music, hooking up other external peripherals like phonographs, filling a small office with sound, stereo in your living room. The setup and speakers you pick can be selected based on these applications.
The best computer speakers I used for years were Microsoft DSS 80 (they were made by Philips). I outgrew these and wanted better sound at medium volumes (a lot of speakers you have to crank up for them to sound good). So, now I'm putting together something like: McIntosh Mac-3, Adcom GDD-1, or Sony ES line processor --> through an Adcom amp --> to power a set of B&W speakers. For me, I work rediculous hours, listen to music constantly, and am looking for specific tech specs that match the optical output of the Mac Pro. Those decoders are basically surround sound processors, but I'm planning to use them for their DAC and pre-amp capability for stereo without having all the other electronic internals found in normal receivers. You have to really dig in and research this though if you go the specialized components route. You can spend a lot of money only to find out things like Adcom's GDD-1 doesn't support a subwoofer in stereo mode, or the frequency range of all equipment is great except one of the components which puts a weak link in the chain rendering everything pretty much worthless if you overspend on it.
Getting any external receiver that has a built-in amp will work for 99% general purpose use (the consumer stuff from Best Buy and Crutchfield). Output from the Mac mini-jack to RCA, or if it has an optical input going from the Mac Pro via toslink to the receiver and speakers will be more than adequate.
If you are doing pro-audio look at external Firewire interfaces so you have a better multi-channel sound card + inputs + monitoring. Pro audio is way different than "high-end" stereo, so I'd steer clear of what I was recommending above and look at the gear vendors recommended already: Sweetwater, etc.
For all around general purpose computer/MP3/gaming, the Logitech Z computer speakers are extremely popular. They have a dolby surround decoder + 5.1 setup. I have not heard these, but they are supposedly pretty good for gaming and give you Dolby Digital surround capability.
Last, if you decide you want to splurge on high-end equipment: listen with your ears, not your wallet!

  • Replacement fans for quicksilver 2002 933Mhz

Hello There, I love my 'new' secondhand Quicksilver 2002 but I hate the noise it makes. I have emailed a firm about getting quieter fans but they want to know what size the existing fans are - can someone tell me please? Or at least how does one measure them? - as I can open the machine and have a look. Also any recommendations? Thanks

    Hi-
    Your fans are as follows:
    Case fan 120mm x 25mm = 86 cfm 37 dba
    PSU exhaust 80mm x 25mm = 38 cfm 29 dba
    CPU intake 60mm x ??= 23 cfm 33.5 dba
As I have, just find a fan of the proper size, and necessary airflow, and replace as desired. Often times, the fans will come with 3 wires. The third, a yellow wire for speed controllers, which doesn't have to be connected. You can rewire your connectors, or use adapters, or solder directly- your choice.
The following has lots of different brands listed, for easy comparison:

Sorry about the thickness on the CPU fan- you'll have to measure it (total thickness of fan cage), or, maybe someone else will post.
I have fans by Scythe, A.C. Ryan, Aerocool, and Arctic Cooling. All nice stuff, each much quieter than the origional.

  • Quicksilver 2002/ Elegato eyeTV diversity

Will a dual 1Ghz Quicksilver 2002 with 1Gb SDRAM,80Gb HD,running OSX 10.4 be able to use the Elegato EyeTV diversity 2008? It does have a PCI hispeed USB card (I assume therefore USB 2.0?) but I do get error messages about a USB hub drawing too much power & being de-activated. (I think this possibly is due to the PCI card having a VIA chipset.) Any thoughts would be appreciated

I know nothing about eyeTV but if the message is too much power is being requested then I'd suggest trying the device with a powered hub if there isn't the option to power it directly.

  • Quicksilver 2002 and Tiger

I have a quicksilver 2002 Powermac G4 on 10.3.9 and I need to upgrade it. I am having a hard time figuring out what will work. Tiger? what version? or Leopard?

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.
Also check these web stores: http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521 http://www.allmac.com/shop/index.php?cPath=5_10003
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Look at this link Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Installing Software Support Page
    http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/
You can also download the Tiger Installation and Setup Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/TigerInstall_SetupGuide.pdf
When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.

  • Startup problems w/ Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) M8667LL (dual 1 GHz)?

    Startup problems w/ Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) M8667LL (dual 1 GHz)
Starts up with bong and then a long wait then screen comes on with old time smiley Mac and spinning beach ball then another long wait and then OS X loading bar and then a panic screen. Subsequent start, bong, and then hard drive spins for 6 or 7 minutes, then hard drive stops and then nothing. Could this be symptomatic of a hard drive failure?
    Thanks very much.

I am pleased to report that I think the problem has been solved. Apparently the strange behavior can be attributed to overheating. After some on line research and the help of people on this list I opened the case and found that the logic board fan was clogged full of lint and dust. After cleaning it I discovered that the fan is inoperable. The computer is now operating with the case open and a small electric fan directed at the logic board heat sink. The computer has been operating flawlessly now for several hours. Will have to replace the bad cooling fan and clean the computer regularly. Thanks so much to all of the people who have responded to my request for help. Would like to mention that a firm with a canine connection charged me over a hundred dollars to report that their diagnosis is a faulty logic board.
    Thank you.

  • Hard Drive For Quicksilver 2002

I've been reading through the docs and think I've got a handle on expanding my Quicksilver 2002 - but just wanted to double-check before I started buying things willy-nilly.
It's my understanding that Quicksilvers have no drive capacity limit and that I can install a Serial ATA-300 500 GB hard drive with no problem, as long as I have a PCI card like this one. Can I still keep my old drive as an extra that the SATA card will see?
I'm currently running two external drives and would like to consolidate inside the machine. Thanks for any help.

    Hi
Yes, the PCI card will allow you to install SATA drives greater than 120GB. Note this is true regardless of whether your Quicksilver has a drive capacity limit or not, as the limit exists within the ATA controller on the logic board, which won't be used by any SATA drives connected to the SATA controller on the PCI card.
Yes, you can keep your old ATA drive, but it will remain connected to the ATA controller on the logic board, not the SATA controller on the PCI card. Basically any existing ATA drives must be connected to the onboard ATA controller, whilst any new SATA drives must be connected to the SATA controller on the PCI card.
The two external drives are probably ATA rather than SATA and have been mounted in external firewire enclosures. Note you'll only be able to have two ATA drives and two SATA drives inside the computer, not three ATA drives. This may be a problem if you already have one internal ATA drive and two external ATA drives (in firewire enclosures) . You'd have to buy an ATA PCI card rather than a SATA PCI card, or keep one of the ATA drives external.

  • G4 QuickSilver 2002 Dual Drawer With 2-DVDs Needed--Slot 1 & Slot 2

    Guys/Gals:
I have a dual door G-4 QuickSilver (2002) with a new Pioneer 110D drive in the upper Slot 1. Below that in Slot 2 is an empty 3.5" "Zip" drive housing.
I there a way to remove the present 5.25 inch housing and 3.5 inch zip housing and replace it with a mirrored door housing--or an aftermarket 5.25 inch housing so I can put the old DVD-RW-104 Pioneer drive in Slot 2 and keep my new Pioneer 16 x DVD drive in Slot 1.
I would gladly remove the front panel--providing it is not prohibitive-- if that is necessary and the replace present 5.25" housing. I would prefer to use the second slot in the QuickSilver as I have some desk space issues.
I saw on the Apple site that the mirrored door QuickSilvers have two 5.25" Drives-- one under the upper drive with a single housing.
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g4mdd/g4mdd-opdrive.pdf
I wonder wil this approach work--and will it be worth it.
Any other suggestions or resolutions to my issue.

Although not quite as involved as THIS, modding a QS case still involves cutting the sheet metal front casing, and modifiying the drive mounting case to accept a full-size drive.
It can be done, as the processor/heatsink is not in the way, as is the case with pre-Digital Audio G4's.
You will need ARDIEM to re-map a function key to eject the drive, as Apple's Option-Eject on works with MoBo's (MDD G4) that natively support two full-size optical drives.
xlr8yourmac.com used to have a link to a QS mod, but it has been dead for years now. elroyonline.com modded his QS G4, but never posted the photos online. You could drop him an email.

  • Quicksilver 2002 G4 - hang and now won't boot

Buddy of mine just upgraded to a Mac Mini Server and gave me his old Quicksilver 2002 G4. 933Mhz, 1.5GB RAM, 2x250GB ATA drives (mirrored), USB 2.0 via a PCI card.
Has been running MacOS X v10.5.8 just fine for a while.
Since it was free, I decided to spring for an OWC / Newer Technology MAXPower G4 7447A 1.6Ghz upgrade.
Upgraded the firmware and installed the new CPU. Came up great. Ran a few utilities (Xbench / Geekbench / Quickbench). Everything seemed fine.
Then the GUI hung. I press-and-held the power button until it powered off.
Now when I press the power-button, I don't get much. The PS fans don't come on. Hard-drives don't spin up. The DVD lights-up and spins, but doesn't do much else. No chime. No video.
I tried re-seating the MAXPower CPU. No change. Then I pulled it out and reverted to the Apple CPU. No change.
I've tried unplugging the unit and pressing the PMU-reset. Not unplugging and pressing the PMU-reset. Unplugging the unit, pressing the power-button, then pressing the PMU-reset.
Even pulled the PRAM battery and waited 10-minutes.
    Not seeing any change.
Any chance of bringing this guy back to life? Or is it gone?
I tried pressing the PMU-reset button.

Tried all the RAM independently. No change.
All the fans do come on. Just not very loud. No "ding". The LED on the motherboard lights up.
Was using the machine @ 933Mhz for a few weeks. Rock solid.
Then I installed the NewerTech MaxPower 7447 Single G4/1.6GHz CPU upgrade. That worked GREAT for 30 minutes to an hour. Then the GUI / system hung. I press-and-held the power button to turn it off.
When I press the power button, it lights up while depressed, but goes out as soon as I let go. The fans spin up. The CD-ROM LED comes on for a sec, and it spins up. The HD's don't spin up and overall the system isn't as loud as normal.
Removed the NewerTech MaxPower 7447 Single G4/1.6GHz CPU upgrade and re-installed the original Apple 933Mhz CPU.
    No change.
I MAY have pressed the PMU more than once at one point.
I also definitely pressed the PMU once while the power-switch was on....
I had initially installed the Newer Technologies firmware, but I suspect it's gone now that I've pressed the PMU.

  • Add FW 800 PCI to Quicksilver 2002 -- Performance Gain over BuiltIn 400?

    Greetings!
I just got an external Firewire 800 enclosure and installed 2ea Seagate IDE ATA harddrives in it (and am running it off its FW 400 6-pin connection).
I am wondering if adding FW 800 PCI card will give me much read/write performance over my built-in FireWire 400? It's common for me to move 4GB video files across internal ATA to my external FireWire drives.
    Quicksilver 2002, 10.4.3.
Any comments welcome especially if you've compared my options on your own hardware.
    Finally:
Can you recommend a FW 800 PCI card that works (I only need one FW 800 connection on the card).
I am using a new enclosure PDS2GO35D, FireATA Enhance FWB2ATA35D with Oxford 912 chip, 1.2 firmware (that was recommeded on another thread and it seems to work fine).

FW800 is about twice as fast as FW400
    Thanks for your help!
Still, running a FW 800 harddrive off a PCI card -- on a slow PCI bus speed (33MHz) -- adds mystery to the formula over running the same harddrive off built-in FW 400 (with other FW 400 HDs attached)...
I would guess some performance gain is likely, the question then becomes how much improvement (and is it worth the time, effort and money to find out for myself)?
I'm sure someone has done it and could save me from a firedrill if the gain is not that much or if it doesn't work.
