G4 with OS 9 want to upgrade internet explorer with 5.0

Hello
I am trying to upgrade my G4. I have it operating on OS 9 and can't upgrade to OS X as not enough memory. I can only run Internet explorer 5.0 and don't know how to upgrade without having OS X. I also can't seem to download any flash programs as well. So pretty much any website I try to access does not work well. I have OS X discs from my other Mac and wonder if I should restore the computer and remove all applications and start fresh? I currently use an emac and got this G4 from my husbands friend. I see it has a lot of applications installed, most of which I don't need, but a few that may be useful...Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The video PCI or AGP card/slot is inside your Mac. It should be what your monitor is connected to.
Your type of G4 came in 3 configurations in 4 different speeds with 2 different video options.
There are 350, 400, 450 & 500 mhz CPU versions. And early 350 mhz models had PCI graphics card and used a 66mhz PCI graphics slot. Later 350-500 mhz models had 2X AGP slots that came in either 16 MB video RAM or 32 MB video RAM version. The standard was 16 MB VRAM with only the top speed having the option of a 32 MB VRAM card
The back of your Mac should have some sort of marking/plate or sticker that should tell you what the CPU speed of your Mac is. And it should tell you what type of video RAM size you have.
At any rate, IF you want to install OS X on this Mac, OS X relies on AGP graphics cards. PCI graphics work, but will not take advantage of various video technologies that rely heavily on AGP graphics.
As I have said, finding 2X AGP cards are tough and usually expensive.
Here's a link to a Mac reseller that has a 2X/4X AGP card compatible with a 2X slot
http://www.welovemacs.com/1099170000.html
Not very cheap for older technology, but can be bought/replaced if your Mac has an AGP slot/card for graphics.
I believe these cards were that price when your vintage Mac was in vogue.
I would recommend just adding RAM, first to see how you like how OS X will perform with that before deciding on a video card upgrade.
If you have video AGP graphics card in your Mac, you will have to run the G4 firmware update, FIRST, before installing any version of OS X.
Here's the link to the update
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120068
I am assuming this has never been done to the Mac as this is the first time OS X will be installed?
You need to be careful when running this update as this program updates the firmware code on the Mac's Boot ROM chip. This is a one time program run only. IF something goes amiss, your Mac could be rendered dead. Just be careful when running this.
You'll have to decide what you want to do. OS X can be put on this Mac, but will take some cash and effort on your part.

  • Problem in upgrading Internet Explorer 10 to Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 8

    Want to upgrade IE 10 to IE 11 in windows 8 Pro how we can do this? Is it possible by offline setup? if not how we can do it online?

    Hi!
    You can get IE 11 by running Windows Update for example.
    Depending on your environment, you might need to approve the update in WSUS for the clients to be able to install it. You can also create a package that can be installed on the clients, either by running it manually or deploying to them with SCCM for example.
    To see how to create the package, take a look at my post here:
    http://guidestomicrosoft.com/2015/04/15/deploy-ie-11-using-sccm-2012/
    The first part is how to create the package, the second will show you how to deploy it with SCCM, something you can skip if you do not have it in your environment.

  • How to upgrade Internet Explorer on PosReady 7 ?

    Hi!
    I am in the process of building an image of PosReady 7 and I need to install Internet Explorer 10 on it and have already created an installer with IEAK 10 for my regular Windows 7 Ent clients. This installation worked for Posready 7 as well but there where
    a bug where ie4uinit.exe crashed when logged on for the first time, also, the security patches for IE 10 on Win Ent did not work on Posready.
    So I was thinking that maybe it did not like my installer created from IEAK 10 so I uninstalled my version and search on windows update. No results, just patches for IE8. Why can't I update IE on PosReady?
    While doing some searching I realized that it was not the same installer for posready and Win 7 ent, found this link for example saying that you can log in to MyOEM to download it:
    http://www.elbacom.com/node/756
    Well, I have not access there cause I am no OEM or have a partnership with Microsoft so what I am supposed to do ?
    Stick with IE8? That will create some compatibility issues and I suspect that version is not as secure as IE10 and IE11?
    What I am supposed to do? Why is it so hard to upgrade IE on PosReady machines ?
    Please help
    Thanks!

    From Microsoft ou will see IE is not available for the Mac:

    You can try the web page in Safari (which is already installed), or
    try downloading and installing firefox (download from here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/) or

  • Never want to see Internet Explorer again

    Sort of. I need a way to intercept a call to open a URL in IE and redirect it to Safari (or Firefox). Is there a clever way to do this? I've posted here because I suspect Applescript might be the right tool, but please let me know if you have other ideas.
    My problem is Lotus Notes: I believe a corporate-imposed template or such is overriding my choice of Safari as preferred browser. It gets set back to IE every time I reopen Notes. I can reset this preference every time I open Notes, but I usually forget and it's a pain anyway. I don't want to simply trash IE, since there is the rare need to use it. I'd be happy to rename it if that helped.
    Ideas?

    If you can't get anything to work by tinkering with prefs files the other idea I thought about was to create an applescript that "pretended to be" Internet Explorer. So when you clicked on a URL in Lotus Notes instead of launching the real Internet Explorer it would launch this impostor script. The script could then tell Safari to open the URL.
    I fiddled with this a little bit but could never get my "impostor" script to launch in the place of IE.
    However, in the process of trying to get it to work I removed IE from my system and it appeared that _in the absence of IE_ the OS seemed to suddenly realize that Safari was another app that was also capable of opening URLs and it started launching Safari. Since I don't have Lotus Note I was testing this by double-clicking a ".url" document that had been created by IE and would typically cause IE to launch.
    So I'm not sure if this would work for you. It may depend on the low level details of how Lotus Notes is trying to launch IE (or "open" a URL).
    In your original post you mentioned wanting to keep IE around for occasional use. So if you want to try this then you can put IE into a disk image and then only mount the dmg when you really need to launch IE. This is what I did...
    1. I created an IE ".url" file by dragging the favicon out of IE's address field onto the desktop. Double-clicking this .url file will launch IE if IE is not running.
    2. Quit IE
    3. Move the IE application into a folder by itself
    4. Launch Disk Utility and select "File -> New -> Disk image from folder..."
    5. Select the folder containing IE and create a dmg.
    6. Delete the folder with IE created in step 3 (and empty the Trash)
    7. Make sure Disk Utility did not leave the dmg mounted. If so, unmount the image.
    8. At this point when I double-clicked the .url file created above it would launch Safari since IE could no longer be found.
    So, with IE gone maybe Lotus Notes will simply launch Safari as a "second choice"? If this will work then you can still use IE whenever you have to by mounting the disk image and manually launching IE from there. As far as I could tell IE can be launched directly off the mounted volume - there's no need to put it back on your hard drive to use it. Unmount the disk image when IE is not in use.
    And if it doesn't seem to work then just copy IE off the disk image back to your Applications folder and you're back where you started from.
    Good luck,
    Steve

  • I want to use Firefox and my husband wants to use internet explorer. Can we do that?

    '''vista'''We have always used Internet Explorer as our browser but lately, some of my links will not open. I want to install Firefox because that is what we use at work and my sites open there. Can we continueu to use both?

    Yes you can. You can even have Firefox and IE running at the same time.

  • I want it install Internet explore so I can view the web pages I am creating, but why can I not install it from Firefox?

    I have downloaded IE twice and each time it says it has installed it and that I need to restart my PC but there is no sign of IE. Does Firefox prevent the installation?

    Did you download and save the IE installer to a folder on your computer (desktop)?
    It is possible that security (anti-virus) software is interfering.
    Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.
    Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

    HELP anyone ?
    MK

    Thanks, MK. I was hoping the fix would be as simple as modifying an entry in the registry but everything seems to be in the proper order this far. I have seen a resolution to this issue which involved using a program named Orca to modify the MSI installer package so that it foregoes checking for IE but that should be totally un-necessary and it a fairly technical approach. I can provide you those directions if you are interested but I'd rather have you check a few others things first to see if we can actually get to the root of the issue.
    First, let's try running a few Microsoft tools to hopefully resolve any errant registry or disk issues:
    Cleanup temporary files:
    1. Open My Computer
    2. Right-click the C:\ drive > click Properties
    3. Click Disk Cleanup > place a checkmark in all options except "Compress Old Files" > click OK
    Repair file system issues:
    1. Open My Computer
    2. Right-click the C:\ drive > click Properties
    3. Click the Tools tab > click Check Disk
    4. Place a checkmark in "Automatically fix file system errors"
    Repair registry:
    1. Disable any anti-virus software that may be installed
    2. Go to: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/center/whatsnew.htm
    3. Click Full Service Scan
    4. Install any necessary plugins when prompted
    5. Run the complete scan when prompted and allow it to fix any issues it finds
    Since we are dealing with an Italian version of the OS, the site may redirect to the Italian version of the site (hopefully one exists). The OneCare Live safety scanner is meant to be a security tool for removing malware (not great at that part of its job) but it also includes a registry repair tool that has resolved many odd registry issues I have encountered since finding the tool.
    Finally, if none of the above fixes the issue, Adobe has a tool named CS3Cleaner which removes all traces of the Adobe SC3 suite. In doing so, it has proven to also remove most, if not all traces of ANYTHING Adobe. Uninstall all Adobe products prior to using this tool and see if it doesn't clean up any miscreant traces of the corrupted file and/or registry that may be causing the issue.
    CS3Cleaner: http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs3clean.html
    My bag of tricks is getting thinner so if this doesn't fix the issue, I will have to dig deep to see what else I can come up with.
    Best of success!
         Michael

  • To launch Internet Explorer on button click.

    Hello friends
    I want to open Internet Explorer with a html file on button click. The html file will contain some report data in html format which I want to show to the user on button click.
    Please help me in doing this.

    Maybe you're looking for a faster solution than Joni's thread. I just made this for an Info Screen, maybe it helps:
    // lunch the Browser and view the HTML file
    public void openBrowserWith (String aHtmlLocation) {
         try {
              Runtime.getRuntime().exec(getExplorerPath() + " " + aHtmlLocation);
         catch (Exception e) {}
    // this method should return the program path of your own browser; it needn't be as hard-coded as I did:
    public String getExplorerPath() {
         return "c:\\program files\\plus!\\Microsoft Internet\\iexplore.exe"
    // I think you know how to add a JButton and a ActionListener to your application; thus, we only need to implement the actionPerformed method:
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
         String command = e.getActionCommand();
         if ("OK".equals(command))
              openBrowserWith(getHtmlLocation());
    public String getHtmlLocation {
         return "http://" or "file://" and "the path where your HTML file is";
    }

    Hello mayberry02, What banhien was trying to determine, is which operating system and which Internet browser you are using.
    If you are using Internet Explorer, you may want to upgrade to Internet Explorer 9, it you have not done so already.
    If you are using Internet Explorer 9, you may want to reset Internet Explorer back to the default settings.
