G5 Dual 2.5 (June 2004) Power Mac LOCKS UP After 20 -30 Minutes

Ever since the Apple 5.1.8f7 firmware update just before Christmas, my poor G5 Dual 2.5 will boot and run for about 20 to 30 minutes then lock up hard. No keyboard and no mouse activity. Have re-set the PRAM, swapped out the video card, swapped out the memory, and replaced the logic board battery but no change. No errors on boot up. No kernal errors or panic. Doesn't matter what program I am in when the lock up occurs. Really need this machine and welcome any thoughts or help. Thanks.

Hi-
Will it run in Safe Mode (hold Shift while starting)?

Safe mode takes a bit longer to boot, as system checks/repairs are being made.
Be patient.

  • Reset PMU/SMU on June 2004 Power Mac G5

    Hello!
Does anyone know if the June 2004 Power Macs qualify as "early 2004" or "late 2004"? Specifically, does it have a PMU system or an SMU system? The Apple docs only seem to address the early/late 2004s when talking about resetting power management . . .and I don't know whether I have to open my Mac up!
    Thanks for your help.

Hi. Well - strictly speaking, there isn't an "Early 2004"
    http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/
just the "Original" (no date in brackets)
But, as it's not a "Late 2004", it should have a PMU button as shown in the photo
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300341
But best to have a quick look, really.
    Good Luck.

  • Replacing motherboard on Dual 1.42 MDD FW800 Power Mac

I need to replace the motherboard on my Dual 1.42 MDD FW800 Power Mac.
Can someone guide me to the correct board I need to purchase? I did a search but couldn't easily find a clear-cut answer... I figure it is common knowledge for some here.
    Thank you!

  • Is the geforce 6800 ultra ddr3 same as the ddr and will the ddr3 fit my dual powermac G5 june 2004?

i want to get this video card but there is a ddr and a ddr3 whats the difference and will it fit my power mac dual cpu june 2004??

The Apple OEM versions are GDDR3 memory for the GT DDL and the Ultra DDL.
Both run 16 pipelines and both use the NV4x GPU clocked at 350MHz and 400MHz respectively..
Total bandwidth runs in the favor of the Ultra DDL:
    Geforce 6800 GT 32GB/s
    Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL 35.2GB/s
However, benchmarks show the performance of the two cards to be very close:
    http://www.barefeats.com/radx800.html
The PC versions of the GT and Ultra use the same GPU, GDDR3 memory and same clock speeds, except in the case of OC variants.
The Memory clocks of the GT and Ultras (OEM or PC) are 500 MHz (1000 MHz) and 550 MHz (1100 MHz).
Performance of the PC  version is the same as the OEM equivalent, only port configuration and card width being major differences (PC cards are typically single slot, while OEM are dual slot. This is a negative if one has many PCI/PCI-X cards).
Of course there are cooler variations, but all use either a single or a dual slot Cooler Master cooler.
Both OEM Geforce 6800 GT and Ultra cards will fit in and work in any AGP G5 (yours) with only OS X Panther 10.3.6 or later being needed (Tiger sam an improvement in Geforce drivers).
Of the flashed GT and Ultra cards, the same is true of the OEM- either can be used in any AGP G5.

  • Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 freezes up, Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 freezes up

    Hello
I inherited a Dual 2.5 PPC Power Mac G5 from my sister. She was having problems with it suddenly freezing up. She replaced the hard drive but that didn't fix it, and sicne she had a newer Macbook Pro she gave up on it. When I got it I replaced the video card on it with an ATI Radeon, and it seemed to run fine for a while, and then the problem returned. It seemed to have returned after I did all the Apple software upgrades on it (It's running Leopard), but that might be a coincidence. I noticed under Diagnostics on the power up test that some RAM had failed. I also noticed that it was running on 1 gb of RAM even though 2 gb were installed. I removed the faulty Ram (4 256 mb dimms) and hoped that that was the problem. Unfortunately it wasn't. I also installed a temperture reading program. It showed that CPU A is running around 80 C at times and is usually about 10C hotter than CPU B. I'm not sure though if 80C is normal for a G5 or not. I noticed that when it was unplugged that it wouldn't retain the time and date, and took a look at the battery, and sure enough it was starting to leak (but hadn't leaked on to any components). I've ordered a new bttery for it.
I ran a check with Disk Utility and found the HD was ok, but permissions were a bit messed up. Disk Utility wasn't able to fix some of the permissions, but i don't think this is the underlying problem.
I've also opened it and gave everything a thourough vacuuming and cleaning and reseated any removable parts. I took the cover off the liquid cooling unit and vacuumed out the dust. There didn;t seem to be any coolant leaks I could see.
Any suggestions on where I should go from here? I unfortuantely don't have any of the disks for it, so I can't run the AHT until I find one for it (the one for my Macbook Pro wouldn't work).
Sometimes it just freezes. Other times it freezes and the computer fans go on high. It will finally get to a point where it shows the grey multi-language restart screen (where it says to hold down the button to shut it off and the restart).
It was frustrating because on my workbench it was running fine after I switched the video card, and it didn't freeze at all. When I moved it to our computer desk though, the problems returned. Tonight it was to the point where it didn't last 5 minutes.
    My thoughts are:
    1. Maybe All the RAM is bad
    2. Maybe the dead battery is messing it up?
    3. When it is heating up with use, something is expanding and not connecting any longer.
    What are your thoughts?

    Hi Curtis,
I'm not sure though if 80C is normal for a G5 or not. I noticed that when it was unplugged that it wouldn't retain the time
Nope, not normal, way too hot, above 70°C... If you have any temps in the 70°C/160°F range, that's likely it.
Have you blown the dust out of everything with high pressure air?\
    1. Maybe All the RAM is bad
The Memory test can really only be trusted if it finds a problem, not if it doesn't find a problem.

  • Dual Layer DVD drive in Power Mac G4?

    Hi,
I ordered a Power Mac G4 and I have an internal dual layer DVD drive with lightscribe built into it. I installed it in my PC awhile ago and it works fine but I want to know if it will work in a Power Mac G4 running OS X (Tiger/Leopard)? The model number is IDVD16DLS and it's manufactured by I/O Magic. It's a really good drive and I hope it works on Mac.

Optical drives sold by I/O Magic are usually manufactured by any of a number of electronics plants in China. The drive will undoubtedly function in your G4, but it may not respond to booting with the C key depressed or boot the computer after having been designated as the startup disk. I tried a Memorex (LG-manufactured) DVD±RW drive in a B&W G3 (Panther), and even with the PatchBurn profile, the only way to force it to boot from a bootable CD/DVD disk was to immediately close the tray, after it would spin up/down at startup and eject the disk. I removed that drive and installed a Pioneer DVR±RW drive like this one in black or beige. The Pioneer burner boots the computer without the extra persuasion. Tiger is more forgiving of a third-party drive, than the previous OS X versions. As for the LightScribe function, you'll probably need to look for third-party, Mac-compatible labeling software.

  • Where can I find a bluetooth module for my 2004 Power Mac G5?

Title says it all. Im trying to use a magic mouse I just purchased and I didnt know my G5 didnt have bluetooth card. I cant seem to find anywhere to buy one or even find which one I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Why not just use a bluetooth dongle?  For example an Iogear GBU421.  There's plenty of others.  Just stick something like "bluetooth adapter" into google.
Note, I don't know about the software side of using BT on the G5 with your version of the OS, i.e., whether the bluetooth preference pane gets enabled along with the enhanced mouse preferences.

  • ESATA Card for 1.8GHz Single CPU (Late 2004) Power Mac G5 Tower

I have an unusual issue. I purchased the LaCie d2 quadra 500GB external hard drive. What attracted me to this drive is the ability to interface it by USB 2.0, Firewire 400, Firewire 800 or eSATA. Of course, eSATA looks like it would provide the best throughput. So, I asked the rep at MacMall to suggest a compatible eSATA card for my machine. He suggested LaCie part number 710372 which is a PCI card with two eSATA ports on it.
When it arrived, I checked the specs on the package and found that it requires a "PCI slot (32 bits 66Mhz; PCI 2.3 compliant interface)". When I checked Apple's web site it looks like my machine has the following caution "Warning: Do not use PCI cards that function only at 66 MHz in the 33 Mhz PCI slots. Damage to your equipment could result...". So, I called LaCie support to check this before I installed the card. LaCie support checked with their technicians and I was finally told that this card did have the ability to operate at 33 Mhz but it wasn't listed on the package.
So, I installed the card and then brought my machine up. It seemed to run normally. So, I attached the eSATA cable to the hard drive and then to one of the ports on the card. So far, so good. Then, I powered the drive up and it appeared on the desktop. I then fired up Disk Utility and erased the drive. That worked fine. Next, I tried to copy files to it and that worked.
As a matter of course, I always like to erase a new drive with the "write zeros to all sectors". This verifies that every sector on the drive can be written to without any problems. I don't know if this really accomplishes anything. But, it would seem to validate that the drive works fine.
So, I started this process knowing that it would take a long time for a drive this large (500 GB). This seemed to proceed normally as I checked it from time to time. But, after a number of hours (with only 13 minutes remaining), the entire system hung. I could not do anything except press the button on the front of the machine.
After the machine came back up, it seemed to run normally. But, as I started running applications, I could tell all was not well. The system hung from time to time. Each time, it took 10 or 15 minutes to become responsive.
Finally, I got disgusted and powered everything down and removed the suspect PCI card. Since I did that, the machine works fine.
The drive is now connected using the Firewire 800 cable and seems to work fine. But, it doesn't seem especially fast. I have other drives attached using Firewire 400. Is it possible to have drives attached to both Firewire busses and still get the performance advertised by Firewire 800?
Also, is there an eSATA card that will work in my machine and still provide the advertised eSATA performance (1.5Gbits per second/150MB/second)?
With the drive connected to the Firewire 800 port, it honestly doesn't seem any faster than any of the other Firewire 400 drives.

I didn't say what to do, only options and tried to point out WHY.
This is what I know, these are possible explanations. And alternatives.
most PCI cards are NOT a fixed 66MHz, very very small market. And most PCI slots are not 66MHz only. The Blue G3 and Xserve have used 66MHz PCI.
Your card should work. eSATA is slightly better than FW800. But you are going through a 'bridge' between the drive and the PCI card, usually Oxford 924 chipset.
A direct SATA case for $68 would let you use two drives and get the 75MB/sec writing speed, which is about as much as you can expect from most SATA drives and in G5 anyway.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MESATATBEK/
And here is a nice 500GB drive for $99
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Maxtor/7H500F0/
Connect it to one of the eSATA ports on your LaCie SATA PCI card.
And yes, you have the single drive now.
When installing cards and drives, reset-nvram - either zap the pram from cold startup or boot into Open Firmware and type the reset-nvram and reset-all from there.
I know lots of people use and are happy with LaCie and D2. I am not one of them (I use to buy LaCie when it was Quantum back in early 90s).

  • Power Mac G5 crashes after installing new Graphics Card

Hello, this is my first post and if anyone can offer any help with my problem I would greatly appreciate it. Sorry for the long description, but I want to get all of the facts out.
Its a bit convoluted, but here goes...
I was having a problem with one of my G5 computers and I thought at first that the problem was the graphics card. So I bought an ATI Radeon 9600XT card on eBay. Before that card arrived, I determined that the problem with the computer was a faulty firewire card, I replaced that and this computer now runs fine.
After the Radeon card was delivered, I put it in another G5 (1.6 processor) being that it was an upgrade from the nVidia GeForce FX 5200 that was already in the computer. After about a week, this computer crashed and crashed repeatedly. So I switched the card back to the original nVidia GeForce FX 5200, but it still kept crashing.
I then initialized the drive and reinstalled 10.4. This did not solve the problem, the computer keeps crashing with the screen that says "this computer needs to restart..." same as before. I then swapped this nVidia GeForce FX 5200 card with another identical nVidia card that I have from a 3rd G5. This not only did not stop the crashes, but caused this third G5 to crash.
When I start the G5 1.6 up in safe boot, the computer does not crash and will run stable.
I really would appreciate any advice.

Ok I ran AHT on both machines and everything passed on both. The G5 #1 (1.6) restarted and ran ok (in and out of sleep mode) overnight. When I shut down, the screen went dark and all seemed well, but the computer never actually "shut off".
Anyway I thought that if I could pull the panic logs from each machine that it may be helpful for someone to diagnose just exactly what is going on. So here are the panic logs for each G5.

  • Mac locks up after 10.5.2 update

its happened about 5 times in a row now. after i restart, the computer will run fine for about 5 minutes and then just lock up. the fan starts to spin real fast too. anyone else?

YOU ARE NOT ALONE! I used to run my MBP for days without shutting down - just sleep. The morning I updated to 10.5.2 - i was locked up inside of 5 mins. That day it happened 4 times. The first 2 happened quickly. I had to hard-power-off the machine in order to free the lock - although my mouse cursor was still responding - even itunes continued to play in the background.
Since I upgraded to 10.5.2, it has happened a total of 8 times. Is there an easy way to downgrade back to 10.5.1 until this issue is sorted out?
I thought it might be software related - since the first two times it happened I was in Entourage. However its happened when I was in Photoshop as well.
I haven't noticed my fan going off - but it sure does lock up nice and tight.

This has happenned on two different occasions today.
Anyone have a reason why this would happen? Any solutions?

  • Normal CPU Temps for Power Mac G5?

    Hello All,
I just wanted to know, since Im very curious about my temperatures since Im really trying to avoid the Logic Board failure due to Lead-less solder. Ive installed heat sinks on my DDR-SDRAM cards (x4 1GB Apple OEM chips (they bear the Apple Logo and have " Memory Module" on the stickers) I got four of these heat sinks: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835110105 and they work extremely well, however I dont possess the required tools to remove the processors to apply Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Paste, and these processors have not been budged one bit since purchase date. This is a Second Generation June 2004 Power Mac G5 DP 1.8GHz. The Processors temperatures are typically around 150ºF-160ºF Im using iStat Menus. Fans arent even noticeable. Nothing makes noises at all, I was just wondering if this is normal activity and if I need to take the heat sinks off and apply AS5 paste. If temps go above 160ºF, I pull the side panel off the Power Mac as well as the air deflector and I remove the "G5 plate" from over the processors and let it vent (still running normally, Im not sleeping it or shutting down) and processor temps come down to 130-135ºF. Should I worry about logic board failure if I leave them at 160ºF (both CPU A and CPU B are always the same temp (usually within 2ºF of each other) This is my only Mac other than an over clocked eMac (900MHz from 700MHz) and a DP 1.0GHz Xserve G4. I want to keep this G5 in working order as long as possible. Thanks so much. Also, by the way I have been dusting this Power Mac out every week since day one using compressed air. There has never been anything more than the slightest amount of dust in this machine, sometimes no dust at all. This machine is well looked after. Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

I dont have a Hex key thats like what 10 inches? Long...the heat sinks are so deep. I wish it was a phillips

Heck, KMart, WallMart, Ace Hardware, etc., will have similar.
I will try the Arctic cooling MX-3. Now, where can I get my hands on such amazing paste?

  • Airport card installation for 2005 Power Mac G5

OK guys, I'm trying to get an airport card to work on my 2005 Power Mac G5. Here's the relevant info:
Power Mac G5 running on Mac OS X 10.4.11
Machine model: PowerMac7,3 (so this would be "early 2005" I guess?)
Airport card: M8881LL/A AirPort Extreme Card
I installed the card as described from the Apple Support site. It seemed to go in fine and I did hook up the antenna wire to the card and an actual antenna is attached to the back of the computer.
When I fired it back up, the computer still can't find the AirPort card. If I open AirPort Setup Assistant (from utilities) it says Airport hardware was not found.
Any chance there is some kind of driver or other missing software I need? Any suggestions?

  • Correct way to burn DVD-R Dual Layer? Power Mac G5 or MBP Early 2008?

I have several software titles I have purchased and they are on dual layer dvd, I am using Philips DVD-R dual layer, I have a Power Mac G5 and an early 2008 Mac Book Pro, I have been unable to successfully burn a back-up on either drive. I am noticing dual layer seem to be an major problem across the board, but in the past this has been the place I come to get my answers.
    Thank You in advance,
    Sebastian
