G5 PPC runing 10.4.11 - need to move to 10.5.8 - guidelines? Tips?

I have a G5 PPC desktop - running 10.4.11
I need to move to at least 10.5.8 to get support for a new printer {and it is time to start the progression to newer O/S anyway}
I have the Black 10.5.6 Install DVD
I have a Firewire external hard drive, Mac OS Extended {journaled} 1T - - That I have used CCC to back up my system.
Question 1 - can I install 10.5.6 on my external hard drive - in order to make it a boot drive? Or does it still need to be partitioned as in 10.4?
Question 2 - is there anything other than having a complete system backup - that I need to do before attempting to update my desk top system?
Question 3 - I have 7.25 GB available on my internal hard drive is that enough space to load 10.5.6
Just looking before I leap..
thanks,
Carl

Hi Klaus1
Thanks for the reply. I did not realize you could copy an O/S while it was in use - thanks for the correction.
I successfully updated the OS on the external hard drive to 10.5.6 - from a DVD. The drive however would still not boot my G5.
Turns out that my OWC-Mercury Elite AL Pro - 1TB drive, was wired incorrectly. To run properly with the Mac G5 PPC - the drive interface board has to be limited to address no more than 2.2TB. Even if it is hooked to a 1TB hard drive.
On newer models there is a red switch inside that needs to be set to Position 1 - on the drive I received the setting is hard wired in. No Switch. So I'm returning the drive to OWC for repair...
This is a real bummer - because the reason I bought that drive was because it was advertised as being set up to act as a Firewire boot drive to work with the PPC G5 at 10.3 or better. Can't tell how many hours I've spent trying to find out what was wrong...
At any rate - I'll have another drive here in a few days - and we'll see how that goes. I plan to use CCC to copy the data from the first drive - to the new one. In which case the new one should act as a Boot Drive. {fingers crossed}.
I will mention for others that might read this thread - it is important to keep in mind that Disks are Partitioned - - and Volumes use both a Partition Type and a File System. It took me too long to understand that and keep the acronyms straight - LOL
Looking at the Get-Info on my hard drive I see
DISK
- Partition Type - Apple Partition Scheme {APS} I think this is also called APM Apple Partition Map.
VOLUME
- Partition Type - Apple HFS
-  File System - Mac OS Extended {journaled}
Don't know if that is correct or not - but it matches my internal hard drive settings.
FWIW,
Carl

Hey I need to move my old hard drive files to our new computer. It is a SATA 3.5. Is it as simple as putting it in an enclosure and plugging it to new computer.
Can I do this at the start with the IMAC? I don't have the old computer, just the drive.

  • ASA 5505 Failure replaced and need to move the license key?

Can someone point me in the right direction? My ASA 5505 died due to a power surge and I swapped it with a spare. I had Security Plus and a 50 user license and need to move the license keys from the failed ASA 5505 to the new one. I kept both my emails with the activation keys, but not sure how I get this transferred?  Thanks in advance.
    Joe

I think this is totally unacceptable. For anyone else who uses a 5505 at home and has bought licenses and the hardware out of their own pocket, the idea here should be that you've already bought the hardware and the license. Seems obvious, right?
Yes I can see the license being device specific if not only because that's the way you've designed your licensing activation schema; but if I've just had your product fail and bought another replacement, there should be an understanding or agreement between Cisco and the user that we can reinstate any licenses we've already bought.
Do you really believe it's fair to make someone buy something from you twice, something that they've already bought from you? Do you actually believe that? I believe that the people in the Cisco Licensing department would agree with my viewpoint and I have a pending case with them for this issue right now. I will post my result here.
Make your products last and perhaps I can give credence to your licensing beliefs, until then your products fail and so does your licensing logic.

  • I need to move settings from one computer to another

    Hello All,
After a computer failure, I need to move the DW CS4 settings (this may not be the best term to use, but bear with) from the dead computer's hard drive (drive works fine) to another machine.
Specifically, all the settings in Site Manager...I really don't want to enter all that in manually, as I have over a dozen sites to maintain.
Is there a way to do this? Copy a certain folder or folders, or a utility in DW?
I have a 2-bay e-sata drive dock attached to the second computer so I can access the files no problem.
    Many thanks in advance!
    Sincerely,

    Bregent is correct about WIndows.
What I was stating is that if this is the original drive from the other computer it is a bootable drive.  What you would normally do in this instance is tell the OS that you want to boot from the remote drive and not your C:/ drive in the working computer.  On a Mac this can be done by holding down the option key on a restart ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1310 ).  Then you are prompted to select the disk you want to boot.  I believe Windows has a similar feature usually using the F keys on startup.  Another way to think of the booting from other drives is that normally the BIOS will look in the USB or CD drive before looking at your hard drive to boot in case you were doing an OS upgrade.  Otherwise, when you restarted, it would ignore the CD/USB installation and go straight to the hard drive.
If you are on a Mac I know the files are in the Library somewhere, but I don't know the exact filename and I can't find a KB article pointing to what you should be looking for.  But if you are doing this I would be selective and only look for the Adobe and Dreamweaver files and nothing else.

So the answer to my question is yes - from an old Exchange account that was provided by a previous employer.
    If so, you can't.
You can't merge or transfer contacts that were synced over the air with an Exchange account with another account, and the same for syncing the contacts direct with a supported address book app on your computer. This is how most employers want it.

Add both libraries to iPhoto Library Manager.  Then select the events or albums that you want to copy from library A  and drag them to library B in iPLM.

  • Need to "move" failover to different interface/port

Sorry if this is the wrong area, we have so seldom had questions that were not otherwise handled I don't frequent this area.
How difficult is it to change the interface used for active/standby failover? It's a working, already configured pair with standby, but I need to move the crossover cable and tell them to use a different interface.
ASA 5510 pair, already set up and working with failover that was originally configured on Ethernet port 0/3 by the senior network admin. It appears that from his use of interfaces or ports he used things straight out of examples on the web, including the interfaces used.
The senior network admin retired last spring and left me "in charge", gee, thanks.
I need to make some changes and need an Ethernet port for a new important project.
The Management 0/0 interface is unused and shutdown. We manage via inside interface from a specific subnet inside so don't need the dedicated management interface.
I want to move failover FROM Ethernet 0/3  TO Management 0/0
    *This is the current setup:
Result of the command: "sh run failover"
    failover
    failover lan unit primary
    failover lan interface failover Ethernet0/3
    failover link failover Ethernet0/3
failover interface ip failover 169.254.255.1 255.255.255.252 standby 169.254.255.2
*And this is the current interface configuration for 0/3 and Management:
    interface Ethernet0/3
     description LAN/STATE Failover Interface
    interface Management0/0
     speed 100
     duplex full
     shutdown
     nameif management
     security-level 0
     no ip address
     ospf cost 10
I know it can run on the Management 0/0 interface because I see a lot of "how to configure" as if the ASA is brand new and several examples out there indeed show it being setup on Management.
I'm looking for how to take an ASA pair that is currently configured and has a working functional failover configuration and simply "move failover" to a different hole or change the interfaces used for the "heartbeat" as it were.
I assume it's not hard - but I also assume there's a specific sequence of events that must take place to prevent the pair from going into failover and switching lead roles...........
For example - would I shut off or turn off failover, and if so how, and on which ASA (frankly, I'm not sure how to access the secondary or standby if this must be done from or on the standby unit as I've never done that "deep" a config before)
CLI is fine - I'd be just as comfortable in either ASDM or cli.
I sure hope this makes sense - I'm more of a troubleshooter and fixer than a designer or network engineer....
And many many thanks - getting this moved will free up the interface I need and can really make a big dent in my project list while the supervisor is on vacation this week! I'd love to have this done and working before his return.

If there was a "smack-self-on-forehead" icon here I'd use it now.
Of course, totally logical - if you disconnect a monitored connection on the standby it's not about to take over as primary because it's had a failure and can't do the job, forcing the primary or active to remain that way. There's the key that would allow all other changes.
Since the settings or config lines are in place already, then if I'm correct it's a matter of then just modifying what's there, and of course removing the name of the Management interface (no nameif) and making sure it's not shut down (no shutdown), etc.
You are a handy person to have around. Thanks.
By the way, *thanks to prior answers received here* and reading responses to others who had questions I can say I've set a record for this agency and done what no one else had been able to do - I've taken a troublesome LAN-to-LAN connection and made it trouble-free with a solid connection that is just 7.5 hours away from being up 90 days with no interruption, no collapse of any SA and improved performance.  I have 2 others out of our 34 that aren't too far behind that. The boss has recognized this after seeing his monthly up-time reports.
Once I get this done failover change made I will be setting up a "DMZ" of sorts and trying out my hand at telling the 5510s to forward specific traffic aimed at a specific public IP address to a specific server. (But that's another topic............)

I have an old Mac Tower.  I need to move data from the unit to an external hard drive.  What kind of of hard drive must I purchase so that it works with the Tower?  There is not a lot to transfer.

    MG,
What we might need to do is to change the question.  What computer do you plan to use the data on in the future?  For example, if you have a newer tower, just move the hard drive to the new tower.  If you want to use the data, what about an ethernet LAN to get the data over?  If you want to archive the data, how do you store the second drive?  What are your plans for the first drive?  If the new software will not recognize the old file type, the data must be exported.  Just getting files to another hard drive will not finish your journey.
As Allan said, knowing the exact model and year of your tower is important.  My suggestion is to find a user group near you.  Please post back with more information, including the name of a large city near you.
For example, our user group just experimented with a 1983 Apple IIc that predates the Mac.  It started right up, read files from 1984  and saved them from a 5.25" floppy to a 3.5" floppy.  That 3.5 floppy will go into a platinum G3 which will read PRODOS files using Apple File Exchange.  That G3, with a USB card, will allow saving the files to a USB flash drive.  But, somewhere along the way, some software has to read the file and convert it to data that is useable by current software.

You can't do it directly on the iPad - the new album functionality basically only allows you to copy photos into those new albums, you can't move them. The way that I think of it as working is that you are just creating pointers to the photos in those new albums, so if you then delete the original photo on the iPad you therefore automatically delete all the pointers to it.
If you want to re-organise your albums then you will need to do it on your computer and then sync those albums over to the iPad
