G5 switches off at startup

All of the previous posts that dealt with this issue were archived with no resolution so I couldn't join in.
Problem: my wife while using our G5 suddenly heard the fans rev up to where she described the sound as a vacum cleaner. She shut down twice. On the 3rd startup attempt the sound didn't reappear. Later while I was online the computer locked up so I had to force shutdown. My first several attempts to start up the computer resulted in the G5 hanging at the blue screen. After that, I would get to the grey screen with the Apple logo and spinning symbol at the end of which my 2 monitors went dark and I heard no further sound from the hard drive.
My troubleshooting so far:
1. The G5 starts fine in Safe Mode so I downloaded the most recent Apple update.
2. I updated the disk permissions using Disk Utility.
3. Started up from a 2nd system on a Firewire IDE drive and ran DiskWarrior. Startup from the external disk also switched the computer off so I had to work in safe mode here as well.
4. Attempted to start up from the installer CD with the option key held down to run hardware test. Startup in this mode locked up on several trys so I couldn't run the diagnostic.
This is the extent of my troubleshooting bag of tricks as one or all of these options solved most problems in the past. Any ideas?
G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

If you're right then I may be paying someone to push that button for me, but worse things have happened. I used to do something similar with my old PowerComputing machine. It was a little red button that you had to hunt around the motherboard to find. It wasn't easy to spot at first glance. If I am not mistaken, this operation is akin to zapping the p-ram.
For future reference, are there instructions in the G5's manual for finding & resetting the cuda button? If not can you direct me to online instructions? My old PowerTower Pro's manual didn't mention the cuda. Instead I learned about it from a PowerComputing user's forum.

  • Switches off after startup load

    Hi there!
Once I switch my 2011 MacBook Pro on, the grey screen appears and the apple logo with the loading bar. Once the bar is fully loaded, the computer switches itself off. I cannot move from this grey screen because it's constantly doing it.
The operating system is OSX 10.9, and had a new hard drive installed in february.
    Thank you!!

If you have Apple Care or your computer is still under warranty, give them a call and get a case number.  Otherwise, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

  • How to switch off Datafinder

    Hello
We work with a database and don't use the DataFinder service of Diadem.
How can I switch off DataFinder - in the way it doesn't launch the next time Windows starts?
    Thanks
    James Code

    Hello James!
Brad's recommendation will only avoid the start of the DataFinder on the OS startup. The next DIAdem start will launch it and it will run even if you finish DIAdem. Unfortunately there is no setting to prevent this.

  • Switching off unused J2EE services

    Hi there!
I have a question regarding J2EE services. We all know SAP J2EE WAS is a very rich implementation but... Suppose you don't need a bunch of those services, and you would like to maximize your box performance. Beside "common" way of tuning, could switching off unused services be an option? (e.g. I don't use web dynpro, so why keepin' it up?)
Technically speaking, how difficult is it in your opinion? Specifally in finding services' dependencies?
Politically speaking, and contract and license wise, is it feasible? Will SAP still support me on services that are still swtiched on? (Given that they don't malfunction because of one the service I have switched off, of course...)
I am referring to a NW CE instance, particularly.
    Thanks for sharing your opinion.
    Cheers,
    Alex

    Hi Alex,
For 7.0, there is the note https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/871394 - but it seems there is no note for 7.1.
Even the 7.0-note is old and has entries not existing any more and does not cover all services existing meanwhile; some entries are also not helpful and leading into the wrong direction, so one should read the Excel-File very carefully and should know what one is doing if turning off services...
The bad news is that (solely) turning off the (superfluous) services, at least if you have a portal running (on 7.0), this does not decrease the startup time very much. I'm just digging deeper for more ways to optimize this, and also hoped shutting down the services would help efficiently, but... :-|

  • Sometimes my iMac starts with white lettering across the screen on a black ground and after switching off for a few seconds starts on ok ! Any ideas

Sometimes my iMac starts up with white lettering acrossthe screen on a black background - when it's switched off for a few seconds it starts up ok. Can anyone tell me why this happens ?

I have read on here that a PRAM reset can cure this problem:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Is there a possibility to switch off in Firefox the functionality of quick launch key (additional key in laptop) that cause to run the homepage

    Dear Support,
Is there a possibility to switch off in Firefox the functionality of quick launch key (additional key in laptop) that cause to run the homepage. I would like to switch this functionality off, because the key is malfunctioned and always pressed. I was able to switch off the functionality of this key in Windows system by deleting entries in registry Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AppKey. After this change, when somebody works in system the Firefox is not running is not launching all the time. But when I open the Firefox the setting in system is overwritten and when I am using it Firefox returns to the homepage instantly. I think because of this quick launch button. I tried to change settings in about:config like browser.startup.homepage, browser.startup.homepage_override, startup.homepage_override_url,… this is for Firefox version is 10.0.2
    Thank you
    Best Regards

    Hi,
    Thank you for your interesst.
This internet button key is one of buttons located above the keyboard near the power button. What I have achieved to this moment was to stop it functionality in the system by clearing the entries in the fields Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AppKey\17\ShellExecute and entry
    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AppKey\7\Association that was http
After these changes in registry the behavior of the button was suppressed, the Firefox stopped to start unexpectedly all the time – so in system it works. But the problem is still when I have opened Firefox. Every time when you want to surf in internet – the homepage is activated also unexpectedly. I wrote this post with intention to ask if there is a possibility to switch off the functionality of this quick launch button in Firefox. Because I assume Firefox overrides the system setup – this I have made in registry. I tried with some option changes in about:config but without success. And I know that for older versions of firefox was some option in about:config do disable_quick launch button. But in 10.0.2 I couldn't locate it.
    Thank you
    Regards

  • After upgrading to OSX 10.9.4 on my Mac the WiFi card is switched off and I can't turn it back on. Have tried System Prefers

No WiFi after software upgrade to OSX 10.9.4. Card is switched off and I can't turn it back on.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).

  • Mac weird behaviour after wrong switch off.

A few days ago I inadvertently switched off my Mac OS 10.6.8 by using the back on/off button instead of file/ shut down. Since then, random changes keeps happening: as soon as I switched it back on the desktop image had reverted to the original, then a few application seems to have disappeared, and today PhotoBooth no longer has the Video function but only Camera.
As anyone any idea what is going on?
    Cristina

FWIW, you cannot repair the disk you are booted from, so in order to run the repair disk function you will need to be booted from another source (either an external bootable clone or the recovery partition).
Afterthought: if you are on 10.6.8, there is no recovery partition, so you'd need to boot from an external source.
You can easily repair permissions while booted from the startup disk/hard drive.

  • Help! Cannot restart of switch off Macbook Pro

Hi All! An idiot's guide is needed to resolve the following problem:
I cannot switch off or restart my Macbook Pro. The only command that works is "sleep". Even after updates requiring a restart clicking "restart" does not result in anactual restart. The only way to turn off is using the power button. What could this be? Sharing does not have any effect. The problem us there whether or not any type of sharing is on.
I installed MacTuneUp software not long ago and there could be a connection. What did I do wrong?
    Thanks!
    Nicholas
P.S. Changed from a PC, but very easily and already months ago, so that is not an issue.

    Hello Nicholas,
Have you tried booting from your restore disk(s) to check the hard disk for errors? ? If not...
follow these instructions to verify the hard disk for errors:
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Select your disk, and click First Aid.
    Click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairs, do one of the following:
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.5 in the window and click: Restart
If you don’t have a Mac OS X Install disc, restart your computer while holding down the Shift key. As your computer starts up, it performs a disk check similar to the one Disk Utility performs.

  • Turn off Bootup /startup sound

    Hello
Does anyone know how I can switch off the sound i hear when I startup my new imac? I want to keep all other sounds, but the startup sound is very loud and unneccessary.
I've looked in the 'sound' settings but could not find it.
    Hope someone can help.
    Thnks!

    Hi soapploeg;
I take exception with your comment about the startup sound being unnecessary. I think that shows your lack of understanding for your Mac. The startup sound indicates that POST has completed successfully. In case you are not aware of what POST means it stands for Power On Self Test.

  • E63 not showing switch off option when pressing re...

Recently my e63 not showing switch option when pressing red key however that key works for exit and cancel. So I am not able to switch off. Help me please.

Hi, alexbonn, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
    1. No, there isn't.
    2. I don't think so, though I'm not 100% certain. I believe the designers assumed that if you have your display open, (a) you want it to operate, and therefore (b) you want it to self-adjust its brightness for ambient light conditions, as it normally does when operating.
If you don't want the display open, you must operate the machine in clamshell mode, following all the instructions in the article you referenced. It isn't possible to start the machine up from a cold shutdown with its display closed.
If you don't want to use an external keyboard and mouse, and therefore can't use clamshell mode, you will just have to turn the backlight level down after each time you start the computer. That takes one second to do with the F1 key, so it shouldn't be too much of a bother. You could eliminate it by putting the computer to sleep instead of shutting it down. Each shutdown-and-startup process takes at least a full minute, so skipping it would save you far more time than finding a way to start the machine up with its display off. The machine also wakes from sleep far faster than it starts up from shutdown, and it remembers its display brightness setting when doing so.

  • Switch off bold/striked text once for all

The admins seem to have deserted the first topic in which this question was asked, so I ask it again:
How to switch off the bold/striked text formatting in 6.22?
I feel the need to use rude language to express my feelings but I will censor myself by replacing rude words by non-rude words.
Do NOT tell me to edit the fetched .xml file because it is NOT a slamming solution! You know perfectly that this horendatious thing auto-resets whenever the user logs off, which means we have to edit it again every single munching day. People have other things to do than browsing to an obscure folder to edit a file, first thing in the morning.
There IS a user who found a REAL fix (that adds a checkbox to prevent the formatting), so maybe you should ask them how to do the same thing, or let them release this solution instead of fooling people into thinking there is a solution!
Your ignoring of our needs and absence of reaction is jarring.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks for the file, that does help and I'll make sure to keep it preciously. It fixed the UI too, and the crashes at startup, and the lag when switching between convos. For security I deactivated Internet for the install and until I deactivated automatic updates.
Note that it was necessary to edit one last time the .xml file. I'm pasting the instructions from the other thread:
Go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %appdata%\skype and then press Enter or click the OK button. The Windows File Explorer will pop up. There locate a file named “shared.xml”. Open this file in any text editor (e.g. Notepad). Find there a text block saying:
        <Conversation>
          <EnableWiki>1</EnableWiki>
        </Conversation>
Change the value 1 to 0. The text formatting will now be disabled. Changing this value back to 1, will again enable text formatting.
