G50 won't switch to external display

I've updated the Intel video driver to the latest, 6.14.10.4277, but I still can't get my external display to work with my G40 through the external VGA connector.  The display works with my R40, but not with my G40.  It doesn't even show anything during boot.  I'm using the driver for the Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller.  I've set the BIOS to display both on bootup, but still don't get anything on bootup either.  Any ideas?  I can't say this has ever worked, because I haven't tried it until now.

First, try resetting the parameter RAM:
Hold down keys CMD-Option-p-r on startup until you hear the second chime.

  • MBP won't use full external display

    Hello,
I got home today, turned on my computer while connected to an external monitor and all of a sudden, my MBP (13", late 2011) won't use the whole display. Instead the screen is squashed and i got two black gaps on either side of the monitor. The resolution is set to 1920*1080 as always, so that isn't the problem. Also, when I set the monitor to all other resolutions, it stretches all the way out, it's only on 1080 it doesn't work even though 1920*1080 should fill out the whole screen, while some of the other resolutions shouldn't. I have the displays set to extend, so the MBP's display is set to 1280*800 as usually, and everything functions perfectly on both displays except for the gaps.
I've tried closing the lid and playing around with the external monitor itself, but I get the same results. I've also reset the PRAM and SMC; same thing.
I can also add that on the Windows part (Boot Camp installed) it just plain won't recognize the external display at all. Everything worked this morning...
    Thanks in advance!

Wow, excuse me, figured it didn't matter much, given that is has worked flawlessly before. Just figured it was a software issue. Anywho, external monitor is an Acer P246H 24" I believe.
I have tried the detect displays too, and I've also tried and see whether it was the monitor tuning in weirdly on the resolution, but it doesn't even have an option to squash the image, only move it side to side.
Since it is a plug and play screen, and it has worked before, I figure it will work again, if there is someway to reset the drivers and make the computer reset it's external display settings so that it will just recognize the display as a new one the next time it is plugged in? The WIndows and OS X problem happened on the exact same time though (after i rebooted from Windows into OS X after not being able to connect, the resolution problem came).

  • MB switches to external display upon closing the lid - instead of going to sleep... what to do?!

Since I updated to Mountain Lion (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8) my MacBook doesn't go to standby mode anymore, when i close the lid with an external display attached.
Instead it switches the external display to be the primary display and keeps on running.
It seems to me there used to be an option to choose how the MacBook reacts on the lid being closed. But as desperately as I looked fr it i couldn't find it.
Is there still any way to tell my MB that it should just power down, when i shut it, even with another display attached?
Hopefully it is just hidden away somewhere in the preferences... would be really stupid if Apple had taken that feature out...

  • Broken Monitor...any way to switch to external display?

My monitor physically broke...long story. But, I have one of those special cables that allowed me to hook it up to my Mac...though it's nice to know that it won't switch it over, it treats it as dual screen. So I can't pull up any display menu's. Is there a manual way of switching it? I can't see my display at all...I mean at all, so I have no way of switching it over. Help, I would hate to think my Mac of a little over a year old is now worthless.

    Hi,
    Sorry about your iMac.
Do yo remember if you have the Display icon on the right side of the menu bar (where the Time, Sound etc shows)?
If yes, press ControlFunctionF8, this highlights the first item in the menu extras. Now press the 'down arrow' twice and press Return.
If this doesn't work, that would mean the first menu extra item is not Display.
Now press ControlFunctionF8, again. This time press the right arrow once and then press the 'down arrow' twice and press Return.
If that doesn't work either, press the right arrow one more time in the above procedure until you turn on the mirroring.
There is an also an applescript that you can run, but lets do that later.
Can you see Safari on your external display?

  • Won't boot with external display connected

My MacBook Pro (circa 1997) won't boot with the external display connected. I can connect the external display (20in flat planel) after it has started, and it works just fine.
I have tried two different DVI cables (one of which I think is a DVI-A cable) and the DVI-to-VGA cable. The result is the same.
During the boot phase I get the tone, the apple logo and the progress wheel. After 30 seconds to one minute those disappear to be replaced by an empty blue screen.

In case anyone wonders, my "solution" was to change to a WB Elements Desktop 3TB (only USB 2.0 is currently available for this model). I miss the speed of USB 3.0, but it's much nicer to not have to remember to unplug and plug in the hard drive each time I boot.
Still hoping to see a proper solution to this (since I don't have the WB My Book anymore, I can't test adaher's suggestion).

  • ThinkPad Yoga won't connect to external display

I just received a ThinkPad Yoga and have not been able to get output to external display.
I am using mini hdmi to display port.
Lenovo tech support was completely useless.
Does anyone have experience with this issue?
    Thanks

  • Tecra S2 can not switch to external display

With my Tecra S2 and when docked in APR-III replicator, I used to be able to connect my external screen (through DVI) so that it was automatically switching screen output to it by default, not only at startup screen of windows (yes I noted the forum topic on startup of windows) but also when displaying login screen and beyond.
Only problem now is that it does not do that any more, it now only sends the output to the external screen during startup, and then switches back to Laptop Display when showing the Windows login screen and when logged into Windows.
Also after starting up and logging in, FN F5 does not react at all, even when changing to DVI, screen does not come on.
I get the feeling that either settings of nVidia Properties (dual screen, single screen, etc) or Mobile Extension Manager settings have something to do with it.
Anybody who knows the answer / resolution to this problem ?
Any experts on Mobile Extension Manager or multiple monitor settings in nVidia with Toshiba Tecra's ?
    Thanks,
    Arjen

I have managed to setup my Tecra S1 with the external screen as the primary/default. It has ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics and I just extended the desktop to the second screen and then selected it as the primary monitor in the ATI properties Display tab. The problem is that I can't now get it to show the same image on both screens so when I use the laptop with a projector, I am stuck with the extended desktop. I can disable it in the settings but it automatically returns to extended desktop when I plug the second monitor in. Any idea how to turn it off permanently?

  • Macbook Pro won't work with external display?

The very first time I connected my brand new Macbook Pro to my 23" Cinema Display the laptop screen displayed mostly static, though the external monitor continued to work. The computer was sent to Apple for repair. Apple replaced the logic board. Though the nature of the problem changed following the "repair" (the Macbook's screen now goes dark instead of displaying noise) the laptop still will not drive the external monitor successfully without multiple re-starts. I've experimented with turning the sleep mode on and off as well as the screen saver. No effect. Is anyone using this set up successfully or is there some fatal design flaw in the Macbook Pro? System 1.4.8, 2 gigs RAM. Thanks.
Macbook Pro Intel Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks for the input. Yes, I've driven the 23" with another Mac. I took the laptop back to the shop today. Hopefully they can resolve the issue.

  • Macbook won't detect an external display

Recently I decided to attempt to connect my Macbook to my new Sharp LCD TV. I have a mini DVI to DVI cable and then a DVI to VGA. When I hook up my Mac, nothing comes up. The television similarly displays 'No Signal'. The screen on the macbook goes blue briefly and then back to normal, but nothing has been detected. I've tried to use Detect Display but nothing happens. Do I need better cables? There's an HDMI port as well as the VGA port on Sharp TV do you think that would work better?
Any help would be much appreciated!

The Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter can only pass digital signals, not analog ones. So trying to use another cable or adapter to go to VGA won't work. Since you already have the DVI adapter, you could get a DVI to HDMI cable and try that.

  • My iMac won't detect an external display

I'm using a mini display-port to hdmi lead and it worked once. I unplugged the hdmi cable when it was still connected to the mac and now it wont find it. Please can anyone help? Thank you in a advance

You can try restarting in Safe Mode. To do that restart the computer, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Shift key until you see a progress bar. A Safe Mode restart will clear some caches, it is possible one has become corrupt. After it has fully restarted in Safe Mode restart normally and test. If that doesn't work then can reset both the SMC and PRAM by doing the following:
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Satellite M55: Fn+F5 hot key cannot switch to external display

    Hi,
I have tried to hook up a projector, however when i press fn + f5 I get no response. I know that the projector works as i have tried it on another pc.
I've had a look through the forums and on google and can see that this is an issue for other people as well, but have been unable to find an solution except that it appears to be a toshiba manufacturer setting which is stopping this from working.
    Many thanks
    Will

    Hi Will
On my Satellite the Hotekey utility for display devices is responsible for the function of FN+F5 buttons. I suppose this tool was also installed on your notebook.
I think if this utility (driver) doesnt work and you cannot use these keys so you should try to reinstall this application.
The unit looks like a US notebook therefore you should check the Toshiba US website.
Check the driver download page and install the necessary drivers.

  • Upgraded to Yosemite and now external display is not detected

I just upgraded to Yosemite on my 2009 MacBook Pro and now it won't detect the external display.  It worked perfectly before the upgrade.  I have the display connected by USB.  Is there anything that can be done about this?  I really need that external display for work and am really regretting downloading Yosemite.

Exactly the same issue.  My Eizo Coloredge was working fine after installation until (just now) I dared to do a restart...
I have tried various different displays and connections over the past 20 minutes and have restarted my mac (late 2013 MBP 15' Retina) and connected / disconnected multiple times.  Neither my Coloredge via Thunderbolt or HDMI (no signal detected) is recognised, nor a Samsung LCD via HDMI.
SO frustrating that something this basic should now be 'broken' when it was fine under Mavericks (and earlier OS).  Come on Apple, let's get a fix.  Plenty of people rely on external monitors.
    Sigh.

  • Since upgrading to yosemite my MacBook Pro want detect my external display

Since upgrading to yosemite my macbook pro won't detect my external display ?

Here's an Apple Discussions thread that might help. It suggests using Disk Utility to repair permissions to fix the following issue, which I just found on my system:
User differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; user is 244.
Group differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; group is 244.
If Repair Permissions doesn't do the trick (because it doesn't stick across sleep and restarts), helpful user "lplacencia" has provided some Terminal commands to patch up the files as needed. With any luck a 10.10.1 update will address this soon!
I haven't had a chance to test this fix yet, but I will do so later tonight. Meanwhile I can report that booting up in Safe Mode didn't make any difference for me. My system includes MacPorts (which includes some running services) so I might need to eliminate that factor, if Disk Utility doesn't help.
A total clean install would have to be my next step. (And I might try that anyway just to see if it's a problem in Yosemite generally.) It's not possible to download the Yosemite full installer from Apple through a public website, but you can save the installer and use it to re-install without having to download it again.

  • Keyboard Shortcut - External Display

    Hey all!
I got macbook pro running 10.6 Snow Leopard. My screen just died a week ago but appart from that whole laptop is working fine. It works with an external display but when I connect it the external display works just as a second (additional) desktop and there is just a wallpaper on it. Is there any shortcut I can switch my external display to a primary display?
    Many thanks for you replies!

    Hi
I don;t have an external to test with, and I guess your 2008 mbp lacks the handy F7 video toggle key?
Option-Brightness (F1 or F2) brings up display prefs - do they show on both displays, perhaps?

  • External Display Won't Recognize in Native Resolution

I have a 40" Sony Bravia 1080p TV. I'm currently hooking it up using mini display adapter to vga, then vga into the PC port in the TV.
Display preferences recognizes the TV as a VGA display. which is fine, however it won't display in the 1920 x 1080 60HZ setting.
Sometimes display preferences recognizes the external display (TV) as a SONY TV. When this happens, it allows me to select a 1080p setting, which works great.
Does anyone know why my mac recognizes the external display as VGA display one time, then a SONY TV the next?
is there any way to manually set what type of external display is hooked up?
It's not a huge issue, but it's frustrating, and i don't understand it.
    Any help is appreciated!

Probably the TV needs to be turned on before the Mac. And when the Sony is switched away from the TV to another input and then switched back to VGA, that's probably when the Mac loses connection to the TV's identity.
You could try the Detect Displays command when that happens, or else try unplugging and replugging the the VGA connector. That's a pain but it might work.
If you want a real permanent solution, something like the Gefen DVI Detective will work. It was designed to fix problems like this.
