G770 won't boot normally or in safe mode... I suspect it has something to do with the boot optimizer
My Lenovo G770 will not boot in normal or safe mode. I usually escape out of the boot optimizer. Today I let it run and it went to the "starting windows" screen with a brief startup of the windows 7 animation...it freezes for a second, then a quick flash of the bsod, then to the "windows error recovery page" giving me the option of "starting windows normally" or "Launch Startup Repair (recommended)."
Starting Windows Normally eventually brings me back to the same place repeating what I just stated above paragraph.
When I launch the Startup Repair it "Cannot repair this computer automatically".
So I go to view advanced options for system recovery and support.
It brings me to 5 options:
Startup Repair (we already tried this above)
System Restore (unfortunately I didn't create any restore points)
System Image Recovery (unfortunately I haven't created an image to recover)
Windows Memory Diagnostic (no problems found-done several times)
Command Prompt (don't know what I can do here except for remove a bad/corrupted driver which may be the problem, but I don't know the driver name that is associated with the boot optimizer...can anyone tell me this?)
I've tried booting to safe mode in all of its incarnations and I can't even do that..it repeats the same things as stated above...windows 7 animation briefly starts then locks up, flash of bsod, then the windows error recovery page.

The only thing that has given me any kind of result was "disabling system restart on system failure." When I do this, the BSOD doesn't flash briefly..it stays. and it gives me the error message page_fault_in_nonpaged_area.
I'm at a loss as to what to do. Not being able to boot into Safe Mode even is really frustrating. Any advice from anyone? can I remove the driver associated with the boot optimizer? If so, what is the name of the driver and where (directory) is it located?

I have the exactly same issue.
When I go System Image Recovery -->Select System Image-->Advanced->I can open all the drives [:Local Drive(C , LENOVO(D, Local Disk(E, Boot(X-where i think executable booting is here]. It comes with an Open prompt asking me to enter File Name with a File type: Setup Information.
I don't know which setup information and where to find it on my Drives.
Anyone know how to fix?
I was trying to re-install Win 7 from DVD but it is not executing either.
Can I boot with USB Ubuntu and Install Win 7 from there??? but how?

The blinking question mark means the startup drive can't be found.
It could be that it has failed or needs major repair. Boot from the Snow Leopard DVD and run Disk Utility. -
Powerbook G4 will not boot normally, only in safe mode.
So...about a month ago I updated my powerbook with all the updates that were available, one of the updates was 10.5.8. I came back after the update had run for a while, and found my computer with a black screen, and a faint white bar towards the bottom of the screen. The computer wouldn't respond, and I was forced to do a manual shutdown. The computer would then not boot, instead finally resting on a light blue screen with an active mouse pointer after passing the gray apple screen.
In safe mode, I downloaded and installed the combo 10.5.8 update, but it made no difference.
I assumed it to obviously be a software issue, and so I backed up my info, and reinstalled Leopard. I then updated to 10.5.8 using the combo update. My computer functioned normally for about a week, and then froze, mouse responsive, but nothing else. After manual shutdown, same problem, computer started to blue screen with pointer.
Since that time I've reset the PRAM, run disk utility a million times (no errors), repaired permissions, all to no avail. I've run the Techtool diagnostics on it, and it found no hardware failures. The computer will not boot from an external hard drive, ruling out the HD.
I've replaced the RAM with different RAM, again will not boot. The computer boots without fail every time in safe mode.
History on my computer, one of my memory slots failed to recognize memory any longer, and my logic board was replaced a little less than 2 years ago while I still had applecare.
So to sum up:
Powerbook boots only in safe mode
Stays at blue screen with mouse pointer when booting
May work properly for a few days after erase and install of OS, but then fails again with same systems shortly thereafter

After a power failure my iMac G5 started to behave quite odd.
That is, when I saw the computer was off, I pressed the power button, and it turned the coolers on and showed a screen filled with colored "snowflakes" (like one an untuned TV set shows, but static).
Curious, I forced it to restart, which ended in my current problem: +it boots, shows me a blue screen with mouse arrow in topleft corner, and this is it.+
Interesting is that when I move the mouse the cursor doubles: one arrow stays in its original place, and another one moves around the screen. Five minutes (or so) later the second arrow turns into a spinning beachball. After the blue screen appears there is almost no disk activity to be heard.
My next move was to try and boot from the Leopard DVD, which took much longer as it should, but ended in exactly the same way.
After that I tried safe mode, and here at last it worked. TechTool Pro's full disk check (including surface test) did not show any problems.
Reading the logs does not provide any clues to the problem. Everything is pretty much the same; I suppose it's just I don't know which log and where to read.
(By the way, I don't have the Application Enhancer which can cause a similar problem)
Any ideas on what's going on and how to deal with it will be very appreciated.
Thanks in advance!There may not be a problem with your disk, but there certainly could be some problems with your file system. If you have or can borrow a copy of Disk Warrior, I'd use that to rebuild your directory with a new one; it will probably show a lot of problems in the report.
If you can't do that, then at least if you're in Safe Boot mode, the first thing I'd do is Repair Permissions, and then Verify Disk. If the Verify Disk report shows serious problems, you'll need to repair those before you can get a normal working system again. You should also try rebooting with the 10.5 Installer DVD again to see if it will let you boot, after you Repair Permissions and Verify Disk; if so, you can use Disk Utility from the DVD to repair your disk. -
Imac 27 Intel will not boot normally only in Safe Mode
I posted previously but the answer to the question was did it wake up in safe mode, i did not give it a chance and I restored from back up to 10.10, upgraded to 10.10.1 and it worked for 1 week and returned to the previous problem.
I ran AHT - Passed, reset PRAM, verified disc - Passed, repaired permissions and removed each RAM module and still will only boot in safe mode. The crash report is below.
It locked up while on Safari, and wake up. When booting it loads the first 25% then goes to grey screen and stays there with spinning beach ball or just pointer never goes to log in screen.

I installed 10.6.8 from 10.6.6 OS on my MacBook Pro and have not been able to open secure sites on Safari. Think it has something to do with the Intego Anti-virus installed. Tried restoring Intego to default status and now my Mac barely boots up and does nothing else but spin. Ugh. Has anyone had similar issues and if so, were you able to resolve? How? Thanks,
1: Backup your user files folders of Documents, Music, Pictures etc., to a external powered drive (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
2: Insert the 10.6 installer disk and reboot holding c
3: Simply reinstall OS X without erasing the drive, it will overwrite the installed version of OS X and the root level software, but leave your Applications folder contents (expect Apple bundled programs) and user files alone. (but backup anyway in case it fails)
4: Reboot and the Integro is gone out of your system, but there may still be something laying around in Applicaitons to delete. Use Software Update to get up to date.
5: You don't need anti-virus on a Mac, Apple provides it already for you sight unseen.
6: If you Software update, the bad certificate issues are pulled, thus are not a threat. -
G5 dual 2ghz. Been unplugged for a while. Powers up but no video or power to usb keyboard. Boots up fine in safe mode, restart into normal mode ok. After shutdown, back to same issue. What's happening?
I keep seeing people ask and the advice to replace if it has been unplugged, but really have nothing to confirm that from my experiences.
My experience is that a weak or dead battery can cause much more than date and time issues.
I have seen it time and time again.
Deal with used machines and you will quickly learn....
I'll give no "recipe" or set list of symptoms, but the range of irregularities that can occur make it a quick and easy first line of troubleshooting, especially when the machine has been off the mains for a few months.
Why fight mysterious maladies and troubleshoot with the knowledge that the PRAM battery is beyond it's useful life.
Maybe they recharge?
Not likely. They are chemically nasty, disposable, one way discharge batteries.

My late 2009 27" iMac gets stuck on the grey Apple logo when booting up. It boots correctly when in safe mode. I have tried erasing the HD and re-installing from a USB installer. It says the install is complete, but after restarting it gets stuck on the Apple logo again. This could possibly be an HD failure, but then why does Safe Mode still work and the USB install not work? Any ideas?
1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

My MacBook Core 2 Duo will not boot up. In safe mode I see keychain problems and Mach 1102 and it keeps circling through the same error. Also the screen is so faint (pressing the F1 and F2 keys don't do anything). I got this from a friend and he didn't have any of the original discs. Any suggestions? From what I've read it's a problem with a recent update. I've never had a Mac so I'm trying to learn and fix it.
I just had an issue like this. I was able to boot up with an external firewire drive, although it was a lot of trouble. I think doing an option boot finally worked; holding down the option key, I eventually got to see the firewire drive was bootable, and booted from it.
I put the thing in verbose boot mode (command - v , I think; but please look it up. I have no Mac books at work to check). In verbose mode, you could see that the hard drive could not mount; the OS tried to do fsck, but it failed around 2/3 of the way, and the CPU was halted.
I was occasionally able to boot normally, but never in safe or single user modes; these do a disk test first, which invariably failed.
I could see from the system and console logs when I managed to get the firewire boot going that there were repeated errors trying to access drive s03, the internal SATA drive. The logs on the SATA drive showed huges numbers of errors. At a wild guess, for some reason a lot of sectors went bad all at once. There had been a some erratic behavior before, but I'd put that down to the single processor G5 problems. (these were non video related, just freezes).
Applecare wanted me to carry the huge thing into the local Apple store, but I persuaded them to just send me a replacment hard drive, which they did. The new one works perfectly.

T510 keeps resetting during boot unless started in safe mode first
This is an odd, and annoying, one. As of about 3 months ago, my aging T510 started resetting during the boot and startup process, usually while the initial Windows loader was still running, but sometimes it would get beyond that to the Windows startup screen before resetting. When it does so, it's with an audible click, and then it goes right back to BIOS boot. It has been getting steadily worse to the point that it can take up a dozen tries before it manages to complete startup. Once it has succeeded in doing so, it seems to be stable. However, if it goes to sleep or hibernates (manually or on low battery), it has the same problem trying to wake up. However, if I start up in safe mode, and then restart normally, it comes up OK every time. After a safe mode startup, if it has been off for a short time (one or two minutes), it will still start up OK. However, if it has been off for several hours, then the problem reappears.
It seems like some piece of hardware on the motherboard isn't initialising properly on powerup, but starting Windows in safe mode seems to sort it out.
My machine is a T510 4313-CTO, bought in March 2010.
Can anyone figure out specifically what's happening, and, more importantly, is it fixable?OK, I spoke too soon. Started it up this morning (in normal mode), and it reset again, so I restarted in safe mode, and looked at the Network Adapter list in device manager, an lo and behold all the WAN devices that disappeared after I disabled them then re-enabled them yesterday had reappeared, so I disabled them again, and restarted. This time as before, it restarted OK. The devices listed were:

The devices marked * were hidden after successfully restarting in normal mode, although before they showed no yellow "!" before, which is the usual reason for showing normally hidden devices.
All the Packet Scheduler Miniport entries were apparently due to the QoS Packet Scheduler driver which is installed on Windows LAN port by default, although it's rarely useful (see http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?190110-Qos-Packet-Scheduler for some background). Anyway, though I tried uninstalling it (which got rid of all the Network Adapter devices followed by " - Packet Scheduler Miniport"), it still didn't cure the problem.
That was solved following Les Bell's advice at http://securitasdato.blogspot.co.uk/2011/05/infamous-packet-scheduler-miniport.html concerning correcting the driver version numbering in the registry (I had exactly the same error). Searching through the registry in the way he suggests is a bit of a faff. I found all the relevant entries under the key HKLM/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002bE10318} (and the same under the numbered control sets). All the usual caveats apply, i.e. don't edit your registry unless you *REALLY* know what you're doing, at your own risk, etc. -

christianLets say A and B are your 250gb drives with your current boot drive A. The two 500's are data drives C and D. My process would be to run Disk Repair on B, C and D. Then I'd run Disk Warrior on B C and D. Then boot from your DVD and run Disk Utility to repair A, just to ensure all is good. Then I would double check C and D to ensure they were duplicates, doing a Super Duper clone if needed. Then remove either C or D from your computer for safe keeping. Let's say you remove D. I would then wipe C clean and use SuperDuper to clone A to C and verify I have made a bootable perfect copy. You might even want to partition C into two drives and make two copies of A...just for temporary safety. After C has a boot copy, boot from C. Then you can use DiskUtility to create a simple RAID0 on A and B, and when that is done you can copy your C drive back into your A/B RAID. After booting from your RAID0 and then you can copy your data back from D to C (after reformatting C).
You cannot simply drag a drive from one to the other to copy it. It will not work as a boot drive doing that.
Keep in mind, if you do this, your A/B RAID has no backup. If you screw up an installation and hose it, you have nothing to fall back on. Time machine alone, or SuperDuper set to clone every day, or any of the commercial backup (or at least some of them) will give you more safety than a RAID0. RAID0 is great to save you from a single drive crashing, but more often than not the problem is installing some nasty piece of software that screws things up royally and RAID0 is wortheless for that. With your scenario, I'd buy another 250 so you can backup the RAID to that on a regular basis so if you totally screw up something you have a real bootable "last-known-good" image. After that get ANOTHER backup going to rotate off-site to save you from thieves and fires. At that point you can smile and know you really are reasonably safe. There are other ways to do this as others will explain. Several ways to skin this cat, but this is one option that will work. -
Hi, I have a frustrating problem that seems to have occurred post iOS 8 installation. When my iphone5 is switched off the ring tone fails to sound i only get the vibration. If i am using my phone and a have an incoming call then the ring tone works as normal. I think it has something to do with "do not disturb" ... i see from the menu in "do not disturb" that under the heading "silence" there are two options "always" and "only when the phone is locked" This does not seem to make sense as i have to choose one or the other!
If anybody can help advise me on this problem i would be very grateful.

So what that means is when you have Do Not Disturb turned on, you may have an alert depending on the setting and how you are using your iPhone. So if it is set to Always, then that means that no matter what, your iPhone will not be notified. If it set to Only while the iPhone is locked, then that means that you will not get notification when your iPhone is locked but you will get notifications if your iPhone is being used. Also keep in mind the settings All Calls From can be set to certain contacts like Favorites, Everyone or no one. If you are using Do Not Disturb and you do not need it, then turn it off.

I have a PowerBook 145B but something is wrong with the systemfolder so it wont boot. I've downloaded System 7.0.1 from Apple and put it on Floppys with my Macintosh Classic. The PowerBook boots from the floppy but after a minute it just comes up a window thats completely white.
I've tried a lot of things, but my Macintosh classic (with original floppys) runs 7.0.0. And the PowerBook needs atleast 7.0.1 and did run 7.1.0 as original OS.
How do I fix this?Because your PowerBook 145B shipped with OS 7.1, it can't run an earlier version of the Mac OS, such as 7.0.1. Unfortunately, Apple never made OS 7.1 available for download. You can run OS 7.5.1, 7.5.3, and 7.5.5 on your PowerBook, but I'd recommend doing so with the maximum amount of supported memory - 8 MBs. The 19-part download of OS 7.5.3 is segmented, so that each one will fit on a 1.44 MB floppy disk. The problem is that the 19-diskette set isn't an installer set as such, having no bootable disk. It's solely intended to be used to transfer the individual segments to the resident hard drive in the computer. Once that's done, double-clicking the first .smi segment creates the OS 7.5.3 installer disk image on the desktop, which you drag onto the hard drive icon. This produces a folder with the OS 7.5.3 installer in it. I've done this before with an old Mac LC and it works. You can also download the 3-diskette OS 7.5.5 Update and run that. These downloads can be found on the same page where you found the OS 7.0.1 download: Older Software Downloads.

Has anyone had problems with the latest Lexmark printer driver update? My Lexmark printers won't work with the latest driver update. If I reinstall an older version of the drivers, they work.
Mine crashed once with new update, but working fine.
I had to delete old printer, restart iMac, and then reinstall

When I use Firefox without menu bar I can see bookmarks. How ever when I activate menu bar the bookmark is missing from toolbar. I tried opening in safe mode and resetting toolbar but it didn't fix the issue. I am using version 7.0
Do you mean the Bookmarks Menu button on the Navigation Toolbar?
You only see that button if the menu bar is hidden.
