Garbled Text/Odd font in Safari since updating to Tiger.  Java related?

I seem to be having a problem with Safari since I updated to Tiger.
I'm running Safari 2.0.3, and have been encountering problems with garbled text in a strange font when Safari loads certain pages. The text often overlaps making it impossible to read.
A friend thinks it might be Java related. I've tried clearing the cache and resetting Java, but it hasn't helped.
Here's a screenshot example: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/tashamay/Picture2.jpg
On the Petfinder.com page specifically, if I go directly to their home site everything is fine, but once I try and search the results come up all messed up.
I also have a problem with it when I try andl log into gmail. "Loading" comes up on the screen in the garbled text font as if it's trying to load an applet, but nothing happens. I eventually get the spinning rainbow of death and have to force quit.
Any ideas?

Hello tashamay:
I am not an expert in font issues, but you may have corrupt fonts. Open "font book.' Select all and run resolve duplicates. Then select all and run validate fonts. I also have read that Helvetica fractional fonts have caused some rendering problems.
I would also clear the Safari cache again.

• Fonts rendering incorrectly since update to Firefox 13.0.1

Since I updated to Firefox 13.0.1, any website using the Helvetica Neue font is rendering an outline font instead. I do have this font installed on my computer, and cannot uninstall it as I am a graphic designer and I use it all the time. Any change we can get a fix on this?
I just pasted one example, but even this page is doing it: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/new/desktop/d1/form?search=Fonts+rendering+incorrectly+since+update+to+Firefox+13.0.1. I also know Pinterest does it.

There may be a problem with the Helvetica Neue font if Firefox is using another font instead.
You can do a font test to see if you can identify corrupted font(s).

• Java broken in FF6 / Safari since updating to OSX 10.6.8 from 10.6.7

Hi All,
I have been having huge issues with what appear to be java source components of web pages since updating my OSX back in July.
The problems are as follows:
Web based booking engines (for flights at Airasia, Bangkok Air) load up without any flight options (or will not load up)
My internet banking "timeout" occurs immediately upon succesfful login to my user area
I have tried the following approaches to trouble shoot
- Alternative browsers (FF / Safari) - the problem is constant across both
- Cache and history have been cleared for both browsers - still no success
- Both browsers are set to accept 3rd party cookies, and javascript has been ennabled on both
- Flash player checked to ensure it is the most current.
I have also checked the functionality of the web pages and their content on Windows - it's definitely something that is limited to mac , although I have been unnable to check against another mac at present.
This is about the limit of my troubleshooting abilities, as I am only new to mac this year, and am not a particularly savvy techno-logiclal person.
HELP! Would really like to be able to
-find the problem
-fix it
- prevent recurrence
Cheeers,
Katie

Hi Katie,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

Where can I send feedback about no response to this issue?

• Fonts not displaying correctly in Mail & Safari since updating to 10.4.5

On some of my downloaded email and some websites the fonts are displaying wrong! What's weird as I figured out that the font is called Brady Bunch which I don't even seem to have on my system or if I do I can't find it.
I figured out it was Brady Bunch by copy/pasting it into TextEdit and then went to Format > Show Fonts. It doesn't seem to effect Firefox browser.
My Apple mail (v2.0.5) preferences > Fonts & Colors > are all Helvetia. Safari (v2.0.3) Preferences > Appearance are Times 14 and Courier 12.
It looks really unprofessional replying to an email and the text I'm replying to is in Brady Bunch.
Can anyone help?
Josh

Re: Source Sans Pro not displaying in 'Design' mode
This did the trick for me. Thanks D Dog!

• Odd fonts in safari

In some web pages Safari displays an odd non-english font that looks like it could be some sort of eastern european or arabic or something. I assume there's something wrong with the fonts somewhere but I don't know why it would happen in some pages but not others.

Hi Firepod,
Perhaps Kurts font management will help look at this top.

• Text messages won't forward since updating to ios 8.1 on 10/20

I updated my iphone 6 on 10/21 to the ios 8.1 and ever since I have not been able to forward texts.  I can select texts but the arrow to forward in the bottom right of the screen is gone and it doesn't do anything if I press where it used to be.

If you restored your iPad as new, and it still didn't help, I don't know if anything in here will help. in any event, I have posted this boilerplate of suggestions many times in the past and the suggestions in here have worked for others at one time or another. Feel free to give them a try.
1. Tap the "waiting" icon and see if you can pause it. If it does pause, then tap it again and see if it will resume. If that works, repeat the same steps for each "waiting" icon.
2. Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
3. Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. If you see a downloads tab in the lower right corner, then there is a download in iTunes.
4. If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>iTunes & App Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.
5. You can also try deleting the waiting icons - tap and hold down on an icon until it wiggles - the tap the X on the icon to delete it. Then try to download again. Apps may also be able to be deleted in Settings>General>Usage>Storage if you cannot get the X to pop up on the icon.
6. You can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered.
7. Reset your router. Unplug it from power for about 30 seconds and then plug it back in again.

• Garbled text reading pdf in safari

Hi ALL,
In Mavericks 10.9 I have some problems to read PDF online document in Safari 7.0.
All of the text is a mixture of !@#$%%^^&*()_+.
Is there a fix for to read in Safari.
Thank you ...
Dimaxum

Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
defaults delete -app Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. You can then quit Terminal. Test.

• Having Font Book problems since upgrading to Tiger.

Once I upgrade to Panther, I pitched Suitcase, and have been using Font Book exclusively for activating Fonts and such.
After upgrading to Tiger font book has basically rendered itself worthless for me. At least half of my old font wont load through font book. On alot of my type 1 fonts, if I drag them to Font Book, then the font will appear to be loaded and activated, but actually only the scren font was copied to the fonts folder (user/library/fonts). If I manually copy the fonts into this folder, then they sow up in my Adobe apps (CS2), but still print lo res.
For now I have ditched Font Book, and have been using Font Explorer X, and it works flawlessly, but I'd rather use Font Book if I can get it to behave, as I like the interface better.
In addition, I am also unable to load many PC TT fonts through Font Book Tiger, that I had no problem loading through FB in Panther.
Any Ideas, or is it just buggy?

Well, Font Book under Tiger is still buggy, but it's better than under Panther, and not buggy in the ways you describe, so there's something else going on.
Adobe apps will "load" a bitmapped font into their menus but then tell you, if you select them, that the printer file is missing and printing will be at lo-res, which is what you're describing. You say you "manually copy these fonts to the folder"; by "these fonts" are you referring to the printer files (which you said were not being copied to the Users fonts folder thru Font Book)?
The mystery is how Font Book is helping you install fonts which are apparently bitmap suitcases without copying the printer files along with it to the target folder.
So, a couple of things to check, choosing just one or two of the problem fonts to manipulate:
-When you "drag to Font Book" where are you dragging them? Depending on where you drop them, they could go to the default Install folder (set in Preferences), or someplace else. If you drag them to the Classic Mac OS library in Font Book, that could let you install bitmap-only suitcase fonts (without their PostScript companions). These will only show up in Classic apps and in Adobe apps, as described above.
-Might your suitcase files have both TrueType and bitmapped versions of a font inside? That might explain why only the suitcase file is being installed thru Font Book - it's just ignoring the bitmap.
In all, it still "feels" like a problem of bitmaps without their printer files... did you rename the printer files, by any chance? That will keep the OS from finding them at print time.
Did you clean everything up after ditching Suitcase? I don't know what artifacts you might be dealing with.
As for the PC TTs that worked before but not now... that's the real puzzler.
In both cases - your Type 1s and TTs, what happens when you put them right into the Fonts folder, bypassing Font Book.
Get back with more info, and we'll get back with more analysis...

• Blue screen since update to Tiger!

Hi, we have had 2 x desktop G5's give us a blue screen after upgrading from 10.3.9 to Tiger. Constant restarts don't resolve the problem. Any suggestions eagerly awaited, thanks!

How did you install Tiger on these Macs? Did you use a retail copy of the Tiger DVD (& do you have a Tiger license for each Mac) or did you try some other method?

• Safari 4, which flash and java related files to restore with time machine?

As is evident in the thread I already posted to on the BBC Iplayer and on others below the 'official' software update of Safari 4 has caused javascript/flash issues systemically (ie that affect Firefox too.)
Can anyone list the relevant files that I should look to restore one by one in time machine in order to get back flash/javascript functionality?
I am sure other people would find this helpful and have therefore started a new topic.

I shut Safari 4's Java and plug-ins off (not JavaScript) and the problem with some sites (mostly ad content and other trouble-causers, one is certainly BrightCove) has disappeared.

• Strange garbled text all over OSX... ***?

Hey all-
I'm hoping someone has seen this before. My mother has been having a problem with her new Mac Mini. She knows next to nothing about computers, but said she saw "strange white lines" and "garbled text" when she was trying to update her iTunes. I managed to talk her through taking a screenshot with Grab, and emailing it to me. Here's a link to the screenshot:

http://img259.imageshack.us/my.php?image=garbledsh4.png
Notice the Grab icon and the word "Capture" in particular. It's my guess that this has something to do with RAM or somesuch thing. But.. I wanted to check with y'all in case it might be something more serious. I had her restart and she didn't report any more of the garble phenomenon, but this shouldn't be happening in the first place.
Thanks in advance for any knowledge.

The only difference is you'll use the restore discs that came with the PowerMac G5.
