  • Moving Mom from a MacBook to an iPad

I'm thinking of giving my iPad to my mom to replace her aging hand-me-down MacBook I gave here years ago. Just had a couple questions about how to get everything from her MacBook to the iPad. Looks like that even though her MacBook's old, you only need OS 10.5.? and iTunes 10.2 to sync her music and pics to the iPad. OK, now for the problems:
If she is only using the iPad without a computer, can she edit any photo albums that transfer over? If not, can she eliminate the albums without losing the photos and then create new albums on the iPad?
Until I get my mom moved over to an iPhone, can she buy an adapter that lets her transfer pics from her digital camera or SD cards onto the iPad?
As for music, some of the music in her iTunes library only plays because the MacBook I handed down to her is listed as one of the computers authorized under my account to play that music. Will there be any problem playing those songs on her iPad? On her MacBook, in iTunes, she was able to be signed in to her own iTunes account yet still be able to play songs on there that were purchased under my account.
As for printing, my mom does not have an AirPrint printer, so are there apps I can install on the iPad to let her see and print to a printer on her home network (an Epson All in One printer connected to her airport base station)?
If she has any documents on her MacBook that she doesn't want to lose, what do we do with those. Word docs, PDFs, etc?
Thanks much for the help. Once I get here transferred over I know she will be happier with an iPad on her lap than a heavier MacBook.

I'm not sure whether the iPad 2 specs on this page are up-to-date (i.e. whether they refer to iOS 6 as opposed to the 5.1.1 in your tagline), but it lists OS X 10.5.8+ and iTunes 10.5+
The built-in Photos app allows you to create new albums in it and copy (not move) photos into those albums (synced albums can't be changed without re-syncing) - effectively the new albums just create a pointer to the original photo, so if you delete the original photo then all pointers to it will also be removed. There is a camera connection kit that allows you to copy photos to the iPad from an SD card (or direct from the camera) - the kit works one-way, to the iPad, it can't be used to copy photos off the iPad. There are also third-party photo management apps such as Photo Manager Pro that allow more control over photos e.g. it allows photos synced from a computer to be deleted directly in the app, and it has a trashcan facility within it so that accidentally deleted photos can be recovered.
In terms of the music, she shouldn't have any problems - if they are in the iTunes that the iPad is synced to then you/she can sync them over to the iPad's Music app.
Some printer manufacturers have their own printer apps e.g. Epson have an iPrint app that supports some of their printers. There are also third-party printer apps such as Print n Share and PrintCentral Pro.
You can copy word, excel and PDF documents to the iPad, but first you need one or more apps on the iPad that support those document types - unlike a 'normal' computer the iPad doesn't have a file system, and everything on it has to be associated with an app.
The options include Apple's Pages app for Word documents and Numbers for Excel spreadsheets, and from third-parties apps such as Documents To Go ('premium' version) and QuickOffice Pro HD.
For PDFs there are free apps such as Apple's iBooks app and also Adobe Reader - and paid-for apps such as GoodReader (which also supports read-only of word and excel documents).
As to how you then get the documents to your chosen app will depend upon what the app supports - different apps will have different ways of copying their content to/from a computer e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc.

No, they are different apps for use on different operating systems.

  • How do i get keynote from my macbook to my iPad?

I recently bought Keynote on my macbook and thought it would sync on to my ipad.  This has not happened.  How can I get it on ipad without paying for it again?

Louise, Walter is correct, before you do that be advised that they are two different Keynote programs. The version that you have in the Macbook contains all of the Keynote features. However, the Keynote version for the ipad does not have all of the features that the Macbook version has. Therefore, a complete transfer from the Macbook to the Ipad most likely will not appear as it does on your Macbook. The Ipad program is minimal.
    Hope this helps?

How do I transfer folders with pdf's and word documents from my macbook to my ipad?

If you had a file sharing PDF app such as Adobe Reader (free in the App Store) when your iPad is connected to the Mac and with that file sharing window visible, click on Adobe Reader in the list of file sharing apps in order to highlight it, and then drag the PDF files that you want to sent to the iPad into that file sharing window on the right. You can also use the "add" feature rather than dragging the files into the window. Sync with iTunes and those PDF files will appear in the Adobe Reader App.
If you have iBooks, drag the PDF files into books under the library heading in the left sidebar of iTunes in order to add them to the iTunes library, then click on the Books tab in the iTunes window on the right, select those files to sync and then sync the iPad. The PDF files will be in iBooks.
You can also email them to yourself and use the Open In feature and select iBooks or Adobe Reader in which to save the files.

  • How do you download data from your macbook to the ipad?

how do you transfer data from your macbook to the ipad?

What data do you want to transfer ? Music, films, tv shows, photos and ibooks are done by syncing in iTunes (for which there is some help in the iPad manual which can be downloaded from here http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad). Documents can also be done via iTunes, but it depends upon the app and the transfer method(s) that it supports e.g. file sharing via the bottom of the device's apps tab on your computer's iTunes, via your wifi network, cloud services, email attachments etc
Edit : have you got the Keynote app on your iPad, or any other app that supports keynote presentations ? Without a 'suporting' app you can't store a document/file on the iPad (unlike computers files have to be stored within an app)..

  • How do I transfer an App store purchase from my MacBook to my iPad-WITHOUT an Internet connection?

I live on a boat in an anchorage. My iPad won't connect to the wifi in the anchorage; my MacBook Pro, with an external radio, will make the connection (sometimes). I want to purchase a couple of apps from the App Store and download them to my computer.  I won't be able to connect the iPad to the Internet--ever--but I can of course connect it via USB to the MacBook Pro.  Can I
    - purchase the apps from the App store
    - download the apps to my MacBook Pro
    - disconnect the MacBook from the Internet (it costs about $1 per minute for my connection)
    - sync the iPad to the MacBook
    - transfer the newly purchased apps from the computer to the iPad
Just a reminder--I _can't_ connect the iPad, ever, to the Internet.  The signal just won't reach that far.  I don't want to take either the computer or the iPad on a (wet) dinghy ride to try to get close enough to the wifi hotspot for the iPad to connect (maybe).  Both the iPad and the MacBook Pro are registered to the same ITunes account, but there isn't any way to connect the iPad to iTunes central for their servers to confirm this--only the MacBook Pro can be connected.
I also don't want to erase any info on the iPad--I have waypoints, navigation info, documents, etc., stored in various apps. Do I have to sync first to avoid losing this data?  (Hope it's not cloudy tomorrow and those solar panels will be pulling some amps!)
    Thanks,
    Sue
PS--I have OS 10.6.8  and iTunes 11.0.1 on the MacBook; iOS 6.0.1 on the iPad.

Yes, you should be able to buy/download apps from the iTunes app store on your Mac and then sync them to the iPad - neither the iPad nor the Mac should need to be connected to the internet to sync the apps over to the iPad
If the iPad hasn't been synced to that computer before then you may find this page useful : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141

  • Can a pdf file be projected from my macbook pro

Is it possible to  project a PDF file onto a screen from my Macbook Pro?

If you have a MacBookPro with retina display, you can use an HDMI connector to connect your laptop to an HDTV.
They are available on apple retail webpage found here:

  • Syncing photos from a macbook to an iPad

Had a problem some time ago syncing my photos from the library on my macbook to the iPad. Saw Terence Devlin's recommendation for that problem--removing the iPod cache from the library onto the desktop and then resyncing--and that worked brilliantly.
Now, i Just finished loading the latest iPad software onto my iPad (not iPad 2) and as it was syncing, it hung while it was "analyzing photo library" and then a message came on saying the application had stopped and needed to be relaunched. This happened on three attempts, and once after I had restarted the macbook for good measure.
So now, my iPad has no photos (except the ones saved directly on it) since the entire library was deleted, but it refuses to sync with my macbook and download the photo library. And so a major use of my iPad as a photo album is currently stymied.
Is Terence Devlin still out there, and willing to be a saviour?

  • How do I synch my podcasts directly from my MacBook with iPhone/iPad (without iCloud)?

    Hi,
I am using an MacBook with iTunes 11.2.2. (3) and an iPhone/iPad with the most recent iOS 7.1.2.
What annoys me is the coud symbole on my iPhone/iPad when I want to listen to my Podcasts. Is there any way to have a direct synchronization of podcasts from my MacBook to my iPhone/iPad? In a nutshell: why do I have to download the same content twice?
Unfortunately, I am sometimes in remote areas without internet/mobile phone coverage. Thus, I would simply get all stuff from my MacBook on my iPhone/iPad without any (unnecessary) detour via the cloud just as in the back old days, when you had to use iTunes for any data transfer to you iPod.
    Looking forward to your insights!
    Best regards
    Torsten

    Hi Torsten_75,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  If I'm understanding your question correctly, you want to be able to sync Podcasts directly from your Macbook with your iPhone/iPad.  You can still do that via the iTunes software on your Mac and the Podcasts app for your device:
Podcasts app for iOS: Syncing podcasts
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6202
    Mac or PC
Open iTunes and then click the iTunes menu.
Choose Preferences and then click the Store tab.
Place a checkmark next to "Sync podcast subscriptions and settings."
    Details on syncing
Enabling syncing for podcasts syncs subscriptions, stations, and play position. Here are the details on everything that syncs.Subscriptions
    Subscribing
Syncing podcast subscriptions will download the newest episode for each podcast you are subscribed to (but not previous episodes for that podcast). If you choose to download other episodes for a subscription on one device, they won't automatically download to your other devices. See the transferring section below for more information.
    Unsubscribing
If you unsubscribe from a podcast on one device, all of your other devices will unsubscribe to that podcast. If you re-enable a subscription to a podcast, all of your other devices will subscribe to that podcast again.
    Deleting
When you delete a subscription on a device you'll also automatically be unsubscribed to it on all of your devices. If you delete a podcast on your iOS device, iTunes on your computer will show the message "This podcast has been deleted from another device, but has saved episodes."
If you click Resolve you'll see the message "Do you want to delete or restore syncing of the podcast?"
If you want to keep any episodes that you've saved on your computer, click Restore Sync on the the dialog box. The subscription will then be added back to your other devices.
If you click Delete, the podcast and all its episodes will be deleted. If you delete a podcast subscription on your computer, it will delete the subscription on your iOS devices including downloaded episodes (unless they're marked as Saved).
StationsWhen you create a station in iTunes on your computer, it will appear on your other devices. If you create a station in the Podcasts app for iOS it will appear on your other devices. Any station settings you change will also sync to all of your devices. If you delete a station on one of your devices, it’ll delete on every other one too.Playback positionPodcasts can remember your playback position between devices and computers so you can always start where you left off. As long as syncing for Podcasts remains on for your iOS device, playback position will sync. However, you'll need to enable this setting in iTunes on your Mac or PC since it's off by default. On your computer
From iTunes pull-down menu select Preferences
    Click the Store tab
Enable "Sync playback information across devices." It may take a few minutes for syncing to finish.
    Transferring episodes and playlists
Podcast episodes on one device don't automatically download on your other devices. If you want all your downloaded episodes to appear on your other devices, you'll need to sync your iOS devices to your computer over Wi-Fi or with a USB cable.
Connect your iOS device to your Mac or PC with iTunes.
    Click the Podcasts tab.
Pick which downloaded podcasts should appear on your iOS devices as well.
To sync an iTunes playlist of podcasts to your iOS devices, place a checkmark next to them under "Include Episodes from Playlists." These playlists will appear in My Stations in the Podcasts app for iOS.
    Click Sync.
    Cheers,
    - Judy
