Generic InDesign icon instead of thumbnail

Just upgraded from Panther to Tiger and all went well. But back in Panther, in column view, if I selected a saved InDesign document, a thumbnail of the document would appear in the next column. Since the upgrade, however, all I get is the generic InDesign icon. This happens with documents created before AND after the upgrade.
When I select a .pdf, .tif, .ai or .mpg in Tiger, I get a thumbnail, so it's just the InDesign documents that won't show. InDesign documents are set to "Save Document Preview Image."
I have repaired permissions, run Onyx and MacJanitor, etc. Is there a preference I should delete or something else? Thanks. These forums are invaluable, by the way.

I seriously doubt that will do a thing about this problem, and I wouldn't try it. As an experiment I tried copying an InDesign document and a couple of the other files that aren't showing thumbs from my tower, with Tiger, to my iBook with Panther. The iBook's only Adobe app is PS Elements. Nonetheless in column view it displays the thumb for the InDesign file and for a couple of ai files, none of which show a thumb in Tiger. I believe the problem is Tiger's, not ours.

  • When I create a New Folder (on the desktop or in Finder), the system uses the Generic Document Icon instead of the Generic Folder Icon. How can I change this back?

When I create a New Folder (on the desktop or in Finder), the system uses the Generic Document Icon instead of the Generic Folder Icon. How can I change this back?
All of a sudden I noticed that most of the folders on my computer were no longer using the folder icon, but the generic document icon. I had to manually change back the icon being used by opening Get Info for each folder and copying and pasting the generic folder icon from some folders that remained unchanged. Now whenever I create a New Folder (right click -> "New Folder"), the icon that shows up is the generic document icon (white page with top right corner turned down). And I have to manually change it so it shows up as a folder in Finder or on my desktop. I don't know why or how this switch happened. All of the folders now on my computer look ok, but I need to change the default so when I create a New Folder it uses the correct icon.
I have also Forced Relaunch of my Finder and rebooted the system. I downloaded Candybar but am not sure what will fix anything, so I haven't proceeded.
Anyone know how I can do this? Thanks.

  • Icons instead of thumbnails showing in Bridge

    Hi,
Why is it that in some of my directories icons for InDesign files show instead of the thumbnails of the job itself? If I open the files in InDesign and then re-save them, the thumbnails show up. And, in one directory in particular, I've got a lot of IDML files, because, I had to save ID files as that for a colleague who's got an earlier version of ID. Most all of them show up as icons, not thumbnails.
    Thanks,
    Peter

In FileType Associations in Preferences, it lists InDesign with a series of extensions, followed by an ellipsis to indicate some others. But, I don't see IDML in there. You can't seem to be able to add to it. And, this problems shows up with some InDesign files as well, not just IDML files.
    Thanks,
    Peter

  • Icons instead of thumbnails, but only on specific file type

I have windows 7 and am using MS 2007.
Thumbnails work for some of my files: images and powerpoint, but not on files for pdfs, excel and word. Except if someone was using Word for Mac and sends me the file.

    Hello KylieJ,
Try one of the below method and let us know the result.
    1. On the picture folder, Click on
Organize, then Folder and Search Options.  Click the
View tab.  Make sure that "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
does not have a check mark next to it.
    2.    In control Panel, Click on the System icon. Click on the advanced system settings link. Under Performance, click on the Settings button. In the Visual Effects tab, Check "Show thumbnails instead
    of icons.”
    3. Run disk cleanup and place a check in front of "Thumbnails."
Hope this will solve your problem!

  • I have just downloaded camera Raw 8.8 to my computer that runs Photoshop CS6 for my Canon 7D Mark II.  CR2 files appear as Icons instead of thumbnails.  Does anyone know a fix

Is there a way for CR2 files that are downloaded to Bridge running CS6 to appear as thumbnails rather than Icons in Bridge

    rhobbs713 wrote:

You don't download anything "into Bridge".  Bridge is a just a File Browser, you put your image files wherever you want and you point Bridge to whatever folder you put your raw CR2s in.

  • Generic icons instead of application icons

In Finder windows, I regularly get generic document icons instead of those belonging to the associated application, e.g.,  generic PDF icons instead of the Adobe Reader icon (which is what I's like to show up). Solutions? Thank you.

    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

For some reason, in Finder and the top of the Get Info window, the icons are showing as the generic jpeg icons instead of a thumbnail preview. Any ideas?

  • Photos now carry generic icons instead of a the actual picture

While taking screenshots one day, I noticed that all the pictures on my desktop had that ugly, generic picture icon (you know, the sheet of paper with the picture of Preview's icon on it?) instead of the mini copy of the actual photo they usually do. I went back through my pictures folder and half of them retained their cute little copy of themselves, and the other half are the generic blank.
    WHY?!
I didn't realize how useful this feature was until this happened, and I want it back! Other types of files that generally do this, like PDFs remain thankfully unharmed. Help, please

OK, this seems the closest thread to what's going on here. I've got a late-2008 Macbook Pro, 10.5.8. Icons on the desktop and in finder windows are showing generic icons instead of the application-specific ones. Funny thing is, if I do a relaunch of the Finder (option-click/hold Finder icon in dock to bring up the menu), the specific icons will show up, but after a second or two will switch back to the generic ones. ??

  • Indesign File Icon has changed to generic looking icon

I just upgraded to Adobe Indesign CC and now all of my file icons have turned into a white, generic-looking icon.  Can anyone tell me how to get the icon to look like the Indesign icon again?  Thanks in advance.
    David

I have a similar question.  We installed ID CS6 a few weeks ago, and when looking at files, I could determine which version of ID to open the files in by the different icons for CS4 and CS6.  Overnight, all of my icons have changed to a white box with a purple/pink square with ID in the middle, no matter which version the files were saved in.  Because we have to proofread any documents that move from CS4 to CS6 before using them (and don't have the time to do that with each document), it was very helpful to know which version to open the file in before opening it and finding that it was opened with the wrong version and having to start over again.  We are on Windows 7 PCs.  Any help you could give us would be appreciated.  We still have both versions of ID on our PCs.  Here is a screen shot that might help:

  • Using the file icon instead of the Thumbnail icon

is it possible to use the file icon instead of the thumbnail icon on the desktop? If so, how?

  • I've made a new icon for a folder, using icon composer. But when I add it to the folder in the icon spot, it changes instead to the generic picture icon with "icns" on it. How do I make sure the picture actually changes to what I want?

So I took a picture of a generic mac osx snow leopard folder (png), layered a picture of a movie reel onto it (png) using the application Gimp, then saved this complete picture as a png. I then took this picture and dragged it into Icon Composer & from there saved the new icon as an icns file. Next, I selected this new icns file, copied it, went into the "Get Info" part for the folder I want, clicked on the little icon in the top left corner, and selected Paste in the Edit menu. The icon did change, but it changed to the generic Preview icon with the letters "icns" across the bottom. Why isn't it changing to the actual picture I made? And how can I fix this or make sure I do get the result I want?
FYI: I have done this EXACT SAME process with other icons I've created, and in the past it has worked fine and changed the icon to the picture that I made. But today it's done this twice, with two different pictures/icons and in different folders.

Did you open the image in Preview? Then make sure you are actually selecting and copying the open image? You can check by going to Finder->Edit->Show Clipboard to see if the image is actually on the Clipboard. Now do GetInfo on the folder you want to have the image, select the wee little icon at the top (make sure it really is selected, the faint blue halo is hard to see) and then Paste. You MUST have permissions to write to the folder! Otherwise nothing will happen. Does the "Sharing and Permissions" section of the GetInfo window, down at the bottom, show your shortname as owner, with Read & Write permission?

  • Generic jpeg icon in finder

I have a number of jpeg icons which appear in a generic format in Icon view in the finder, i.e.the icon simply says 'jpeg' and does not give a thumbnail of the image. if I save an image in tiff format (from Photoshop or Preview) the icon shows a thumbnail of the file's contents but Preview saves show only the generic format. Two questions: how do I make sure all jpegs are saved with a thumbnail and can I convert existing generic icons to show a thumbnail without converting them to tiffs?

enetr command+J in finder and in the resulting popup check the box "show icon preview".

  • Photo Downloader CS5 - Generic Flower Icon

Just upgraded to CS5 about two weeks ago.  I am using Photo Downloader to download my photos from a CF reader.  All images on the CF are JPEGS (no Raw).  Noticed today while the download was running, after a few hundred images had downloaded, the thumbnail previews turned into a generic flower icon.  Is this something to be concered about?  I never noticed this before as normally I start the download and don't pay much attention to it while it's running.  I re-ran the download using Mac's Image Capture and watched everything until it ended - all the previews on Image Capture displayed as normal thumbnail previews of the images.
    Thank you for any feedback!
    Regards,
    Will

Well, I think I answered my own question.  If you go into Advanced Dialog, many of the preview thumbnails towards the end have hourglass icons.  If you wait until all the hourglass icons are replaced by the preview thumbnail and then go back to Standard Dialog and start the download, you won't see the generic flower icon.  I guess the prevews are not generated fast enough to keep up with the download.
