Genie effect

I have the Genie Effect set up on my Dock & it works fine except for on the Activity Monitor, which, when I try to reopen the program refuses to re-open when using the  Genie Effect.  Not really a problem, just annoying!  Any ideas?  Thanks

Hi,
I tried peters suggestion and it worked very well.
You can select the distort tool from the toolbox and then you are able to manipulate the four corners of your shape. By keyframing the positions of the corners, I was able to make the shape slide into a slimmer version and then move down and disappear out of frame.
One thought I had was to create a group and animate that. Then anything you put in the group will animate accordingly, and can be reused easily.
If any of these terms are unfamiliar then it might be time to brush off the old manual, put your feet up and read through.

  • Can I control the genie effect for the editing toolbar?

On my laptop I notice that the photo editing toolbar at the bottom comes up when I move the cursor to the bottom of the screen but on my 27" iMac it is always up at the bottom. Is there a way to turn on the genie effect so the toolbar is not seen on my 27" iMac just as it is not seen on my laptop?

Yes, it is full screen view.
I found autohide toolbar under viewmenu. That solved it. Thanks!

  • Jerky Genie Effect? A Slightly Different Question.

Occasionally the genie effect will suddenly become jerky.
A few months ago I searched the forums and found that one cure was to log out and then back in again.
Apparently the finder or desktop get "tired" and logging out refreshes everything.
I think my problems are caused because I generally have about 40 items sitting on my desktop, which I believe wastes a lot of computing power. So every now and again I get rid of half of them.
I also have some 50 items in the dock! Will each of these icons be as damaging as the others on the desktop?
In other words, should I keep the items in the dock down to a minimum just as I should keep down those on the desktop?

What brought this to mind was a video I was watching in Final Cut Pro this morning.
It started playing a little hesitantly (something that never happens) and thinking it might be a similar issue, I logged out and in.
Lo and behold the video played perfectly.
It was then I realised I had more things in the dock than on the desktop. So I have pruned both, just in case they are impacting on performance.

  • My dock/genie effect is NOT working on my MacPro1

I'm running 10.4.11 and all of a sudden today the dock and the genie effect stopped working! Why? The application icons down in the dock stopped animating and when I click on 'Auto hide and show dock' the dock doesn't come up... I have to click my mouse then it 'pops' up... I've done the trashing of com.apple.dock.plist and still doesn't work. Could it be the mouse (Logitech MX Laser)... What's the deal!?

  • Frame by frame dashboard & genie effect

    Hi,
I'm experiencing a strange problem with my MBP.
When I press f12, dashboard shows up frame by frame. It's not fluid although the power cable is plugged in. And when minimizing some applications, the genie effect is also not fluid...
And then, I found a solution to these problems. When I unplug the power cable and plug it in again, dashboard and genie effects become normal & fluid... Strange huh? But I know that my solution is not the way that it should be. Why do I have to unplug & plug it in again to get a fluid dashboard and genie effect?
    Thanks.

    10.5.3 update resolved the problem.

  • Genie effect not working

I've a new computer w/snow leopard, which I've had for two weeks. Up until now, I hadn't used the genie effected on my dock. I come to find out it isn't working. I've tried what was suggested on another thread, which is: Users/myname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist, tossed in the trash and reboot, but it didn't work. Is there anything else I can do? I'd be much obliged for any help. Thank you.  ~Pelusita

'Don't I feel like the "f" ing fool.' :::::Jack Nicholson sly grin::::::!   You were right with the above statement.  In the past, I would click the top of any part of whatever window I had open and the genie effect worked and the icon of whatever window I had clicked on would show up on the dock, next to the trashcan.  Not so with 10.6.7.  I came to find out that I have to click the [yellow] minimizing button  for the genie effect to work.  Mea maxima culpa -my bad.
P.S.  This is interesting If you want to watch the genie effect work in slow motion, hold down the "shift," key when you click the minimizing button.  I found this quite by accident on Google.

  • Slow genie effect animation

80% of the times I log (being it by user switching or a clean boot) I get slow genie effect animations when minimizing. The animation doesn't look fluid... it looks like a slow frame by frame; and though the time from when I give the command and the complete animation ends is almost identical to the healthy performed animation (meaning it's more of an aesthetics issue rather than performance) it's still kind of annoying.
They only thing that seems to fix it is closing all windows and quitting the Finder (or force quitting if you haven't add the Quit option to the Finder with Tinker Tool or something like that). After that it works just fine... until I reboot or log off.
    Any suggestions?
btw: I can't tell if the same happens on scale effect.

Found the answer; sorry. (well... kinda)

  • Genie effect and Exposé on my iMac G5

    Hi there,
well, this topic comes after several days of testing, thinking, testing...
    so...
Why does the OS X genie effect isn't smooth on my iMac? I mean, it has a Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB, which it's quite better than the Geforce FX 5200 64MB I had on my previous PowerMac G5 (dual 1.8GHz Rev.A), there must be something mysterious I don't know about videocards...
My iMac is already set to "maximum performance" but the genie effect isn't as smooth as it was on my PowerMac G5. If I set to "automatic" the dock animation runs at 1/2 framerate as it should.
I guess these sort of FX are not related (not directly at least...) to CPU speed...aren't them?
I've had bad experiences with the dock animation too... one day I discovered it was not as smooth as before, than I discovered that if the OS X desktop gets crowded with icons, you loose some smoothness in the GUI, I guess it's strange, but GUI smoothness came back when I decided to move all the stuff inside ONE folder (still on the desktop).
Now...the desktop isn't crowded anymore, but genie effect and exposè aren't as smooth as they should be, it's far from being smooth, even with one little window.
    any advice?
(I've just tried ATIcellerator, but it doesn't change anything even at +33% overclock...RAM/CORE, which is something I wouldn't recommend on an iMac)

Defragging your drive will do nothing, as Tiger automatically defraggs itself on the fly.
I noticed a significant difference in the performance of Expose if I had multiple windows open up at a time - even if it was nothing more than several Safari windows. My guess is that performance depends on memory load.
One other thing I noticed was that litlle things like that would slow down if I left apps open, particularly Safari. If I closed all apps, then reopened them - without rebooting - performance was much better.

  • How to get rid of randomly occuring genie effect

For a month or so, open non-online pages get sucked into Dock I think when i open another page.It happens so fast I'm not sure what activates this but has to do with the cursor.Very annoying and happens repeatedly so I'd like to get rid of this new and unwelcome genie feature.Switching to scale effect does nada.I don't know what scale effect is so not sure I'd want that either.I believe that if i want to minimize a page (never have deliberately), i activate that by clicking yellow º at top left. The cursor is nowhere near that º when genie acts up and i've never used it (º) to minimize cuz i just switch from page to page, overlapping documents.I like it this way so wld appreciate help in eliminating surprise minimizings>dock.Other goofy things happening too, but I'll ask about them in pertinent discussion. Thank you!

Hi imasutiki, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Do you have another mouse to try?
I believe that if i want to minimize a page (never have deliberately), i activate that by clicking yellow º at top left. The cursor is nowhere near that º when genie acts up and i've never used it
Also by double clicking anywhere on the top bar of that window, I believe your mouse button is getting crotchety on it's own.

Running System Version: OS X 10.9.2 (13C64) "Server".
As stated - When I use ScreenSharing to access my account, I can see the windows minimize and maximize with Genie, I can see the windows in the dock when they are minimized, but they are not visible on the screen once I bring them 'up'.

  • How long should One hour of DV with TC gen take to export Ref file to deskt

DV footage in a DV timeline.
Only TC gen effect- which I believe is real time- (plays down fine without render)
Export QT ref (no movie self contained) takes 17 minutes??
Ever since I've gone to SL I have been having drop frame issues, long renders, etc.
    what's up?
I have 16gigs, ATI 4870, Dual Quad, ect. Machine should be quick (and it was)
    (SL was fresh install)
    maybe back to leopard?

The TC gen effect is real time to play in real time, or in other words creating an hour's worth of the effect in an hour, but it can't create an hour's worth of it instantaneously when doing a qt ref export. That's what's taking 17 mins.
As for the SL issues. I don't know, are you on FCP7?

  • Dual display and VRAM usage.

Hi, back in the days I wanted a 12" iBook but couldn't afford one, last autumn thought I decided to get a Macbook Pro, the update came and...
    .. it had 128MB vram.
I want to use dual screen and maybe even occasional gaming, I couldn't decide if this where sufficient for my needs or not so I waited for the june update.
The mid-07 MBP arrived and, it had 128MB vram AGAIN!
Why oh why Apple? Oh, don't answer that, it's because you're in bed with Intel and want to force feed us useless highest end CPUs. But all I care for is the VRAM, why do I have to pay a ****-of-a-lot for a 1/11th faster CPU?
Anyway, I tried to decide if I should "bit the sour Apple" and get the mid modell or just get the low one because that one is much more price worthy. A few days ago I ordered the low end one.
But then I've seen on barefeats that he says that a 30" ACD display would use 128MB vram of the 256MB vram modell, are vram always splitted between displays in OS X?
You see, if the extra 20" 1680x1050 display only use 1680x1050x(3 or 4) bytes that is ok, maybe even if it's double buffered (is it?), because then I will probably have like 100MB vram left for all my windows and for desktop usage that is probably ok. But if the vram is shared between displays and my 20" which I will use most only get 64MB vram that's quite low.
I know I can turn of the sleeping capabilities of the MBP and shut the lid and only use one screen but that's a quite lame solution.
I hate how Apple does this, and it seems to worry a lot of people. Some get the more expensive modell and hate that they had to do it, some doesn't, and some don't buy a machine at all .. I would probably have stayed in the last crowd.
256MB vram can't have cost them many tens of dollars, why not have that in all modells? Why is the middle one even needed? Just make 2.4GHz CPU and option in that case.
Anyway, does anyone know how much vram my screen will have available? Will 128MB work for me with all the regular desktop apps I will have running? Or should I really go with the 256MB one? The tricky part is that my MBP might be shipped today or similair.
I've called Apple support three times but noone of them knows how this works so they aren't for much help.
(Dell vostro 1500 sells here in Sweden for less than half the price of the mid MBP and comes way more balanced, you can even get a 1680x1050 screen. Sure it has 2.0GHz CPUs or whatever but I don't care about that. Where is the old "omg MHz myth"-Apple? Please understand CPU speed isn't everything. Instead of leading the MHz myth fight it ;D, start calling the CPUs T7300 and so on aswell ;D)

Hi Johan, actually the VRAM used by OS X is likely to be quite a bit more than just your screen resolution multiplied by 3 or 4, since each open window is composited offscreen for the shadow effects and for things like zooming (Ctrl-Mousewheel) and the "Genie effect".
I'm pretty sure the total VRAM isn't divided in half for each of the two displays though, as it will be allocated from the video driver on an as-needed basis. In practice, with both displays active and a few windows open, you should still have maybe 80-90% of your VRAM available for applications.
Games and other VRAM-heavy applications are a special case as these will typically use as much VRAM as you can give them, and swap out to system RAM via the PCI-X bus when they need more (and unlike swapping to disk, swapping into VRAM from system RAM is still pretty fast).

  • Brand new 2011 macbook pro (preinstalled lion osx) is too slow! Is there anyway to role back to previous OS if it came pre-installed?

I purchased new macbook pro 15" with quad core 2.2 ghz intel i7, 8gb of ram.  I swear to god it is slower than my previous 2008 macbook running leopard OS.  I use heavy programs pretty often, adobe CS5 and 3D modeling and some rendering on the mac side and and a bit of 3D work with fusion on windows.  I was really expecting a performance boost with the new computer, but Lion is annoyingly slow.  Even if I am not using any of the heavy stuff and just browsing on the internet, it seems noticeably slower than the 2008 macbook. Typing lags sometimes, genie effect and opening effect lags. The iOS type features are also sluggish.  I am about ready to start working again on my old macbook on leopard.  I haven't had any issues with the machine completely freezing (though I have had to force quit apps a few times).  It is definitely a usable machine, but for the price and newness I expect the performance to be better than the 2008 macbook.  From what I have read on the forums, I am blaming the buggy Lion OS for my troubles.  I figured the OS might still have some bugs as it was brand new, but this is more than I bargained for.
Does anyone know if it is possible to role back to Snow Leopard? I have heard it can't be done if the computer came pre-installed with Lion OS, but surely some clever people have figured a way...

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.
I am not using Filevault, and the closest genius bar is 4 hours away, so I am trying to figure out a solution via internet.   I will check out the Fusion update, though I expect that to be slow (that is the price you pay for running windows on a mac!)
I am surprised you havent noticed the resume/restore windows, docs, and apps feature (for both subsequent openings of program and reboot of system- new to Lion OS) I use the term feature lightly as they didnt seem to work properly initially, like they had cached older stuff than when I actually quit an app or shut down.  After the first couple of times of the computer stalling trying to reopen an application with a heavy document or restarting and trying to open EVERY program I had used the day before, I disabled the features.  To disable required a bit of a hack with Terminal.
    to disable on restart:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/25/disable-reopen-windows-when-logging-back-in-in-ma c-os-x-lion-completely/
    to disable resuming applications:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/18/disable-mac-os-x-lion-resume-window-restore/
--only that doesn't really work (which if you scroll through the comments below you will see what people post about it) I had to expose the hidden library, delete some stuff there, and run some stuff in terminal to get this feature totally disabled, blah blah blah.
These seem like good ideas, but definitely need some tweaking to work properly.  I like the iOS features in Mission Control, but the lagging animations are absolutely unacceptable. Even dragging an icon across starts out jerky and sluggish. I never noticed any issue with the OS animations on the 2008 Macbook running Leopard.
Anyway, there are known compatibility issues with Lion and Adobe Creative Suite.  Adobe CS5 products are what I use most often, so I would like to role back to Snow leopard, though it is reported that Apple has made that impossible on the new machines that shipped with Lion.

  • Seriously Apple, why can't Leopard render a transparent menu bar on my Mac?

I have a 2-year-old PowerBook 12" 1.5 GHz running Leopard 10.5.2 freshly updated today. I thought for sure I'd get to see a translucent menu bar but, no, still opaque as ever with no option to change.
Apple, let me tell you some of the things this pretty capable computer can do:
-Dynamically render transparency and reflections in a magnifying Dock
-Dynamically render transparency in Terminal windows with varying levels of transparency
-Render GPU-intensive animations such as Genie effect, rotating cube, and dashboard "splash"
-Hey, I can even boot into Linux, run Gnome, and make it's menu bar transparent!
Please stop telling me my computer is not compatible enough to display a translucent menu bar. Displaying the transparency in the menu bar has got to be one of the least intensive operations Leopard will do. It is a static image (save for seldom changing menu items) that rarely needs to be re-rendered. Terminal windows, however, get resized, dragged around and display their transparency beautifully.
Let's get some straight answers as to why this simple issue of getting a Transparent menu bar consistently displayed (ot not displayed, by choice) across all of your "compatible" hardware is such a confusing mystery.
Thanks for fixing the Stacks, at least.

Thanks for your input. While you may not mind a solid menu bar, I quite like it and would like to have one. My main gripe however, is the fact that this really just seems like some bug that Apple isn't willing to focus on, or admit to.
They say the graphics card can render "most effects" but not the menu bar. But, seriously, as I've mentioned before, why can it render transparent drop-down menus, transparent Terminal windows, transparent/reflective Dock, Dashboard ripple effect but not a simple, basic, transparent menu?
Once I get a decent answer to this, I'll be satisfied. Because right now, telling me my 64MB graphics card can't handle it seems like a load of bulls**t.
