Getting ~/Library to sync in background when login/logout sync turned off
I have a bunch of laptop users with very slow network connections where I need to turn off login/logout sync and only sync data in the background manually. Problem is, if you turn off login/logout sync it also turns off syncing ~/Library in the background.
Now if you use the Details tab for MCX setting in WGM you can add the key "Sync Preferences in the Background" and set it to "sync" but it doesn't make any difference.
Anyone know how to work around this so I don't have to sync anything at login/logout but can still sync Preferences in background when I manually do a sync?
I don't think it's in the GUI, but you can manage this stuff pretty granularly with the following boolean flags in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.homeSync.plist:

I think the keys you want are syncPreferencesInBackground and/or syncPreferencesAtSyncNow. However, I found that this unpredicatably didn't sync everything. PHD has a generally hard time with open files and many of these files are open. Also, note that 10.5 changed in that it considers any hidden folders loose in your home folder (e.g. .ssh/) to be included in "Preference" syncing only occurring at Logout and Login. This isn't really documented or shown anywhere. I'm pretty sure that they are ignored in the background *even with* the above flags in use. Note that I haven't played with these in a while, so your mileage might vary. Perhaps they're just not ready for prime time.

Actually, I just remember where and how I found these: You need to follow the directions for "Using the Preference Editor to Manage Core Services" on page 236 of the User Management manual. This gives you the location of Preference Manifest for Home Folder Syncing which has a bucketload of cool options, including automatic conflict resolution.

Im having huge issues after updating to 12.1 on Win 8.1 x64. Choppy playback and so on.
Try this since it helps in most situtation :
Remove itunes but keep library files. Then download it again and install it.
Also most likely you will have to restore ipod touch. I restored my iPhone 5 to remove waiting for changes to apply and Error 54.
my iPad air still isnt restored (cant do it now) and it sometimes does same like iPhone waiting for changes to apply. And gives error 54 but sync DOES GET COMPLETED.
Also may sound stupid but try to use USB 2.0 Ports. Not 3.0. I have troubles when using 3.0 -
Mobile Account Login/Logout Sync Not Skipping Inputted Items
I'm running a Leopard Server 10.5.6 Advanced Config ODM.
No matter what I put into the Login & Logout Sync tab underneath "Skip items that match any of the following" it still syncs everything.
I enter "ends with" ".mp3", "mp3" and it still syncs the test MP3s I put onto the desktop for the user.
I ask it to not sync ~/Documents and it still syncs the test documents I put into that folder.
This user is set to sync at login and logout with no background sync. The client machine is using 10.5.6.
Merge with user's settings NOT checked
Background Sync > Never
Option > Never
Account Creation > Creation
Create mobile account when user logs in to network CHECKED
Create home:
with default sync settings: CHECKEDThanks for the reply.

I am trying to migrate my user account to a portable home directory. (OSX Server 10.4.8, OSX Client 10.4.8). I have a small network (8 users) and everyone else has been using network accounts and portable home directories for months. I had a large amount of data in my account and just didn't want to take the time until I had some serious sound problem with my laptop and had to do an erase and install to fix it. So I decided to convert to a network account but put most of my files outside my home directory. The only thing in my home directory are my apple mail files. I can't get login logout sync to complete succeessfully. It goes through "checking items" and changes the folder it displays until it gets to the last one where it hangs for hours and never actually starts synchronizing. My work around was to remove all but a couple of my mailboxes from ~/library/mail and then sync by logging out/in. I then would add a couple more mail boxes and repeat. This is a tedious process.
I could not find any discussion about limitations on the number of files that login/logout sync can process. I suspect there is some memory limit on the total number of files in a directory or the total number of changed files and instead of complaining it just hangs. Has anyone seen this? Does anyone know of a limit on the number of files. I have about 14 GB of mail archives with 100,000s of messages.
I suspect I will have to archive them outside of the ~/library/mail folder and maybe do a symlink.Not even sure you can do this but you might look for Login/Logout Hooks that can perform the action your looking to do. There would have to be a way to shell-script the Sync part of RHD which I'm not sure you can.
On the Server Side you can control what get auto synced and what does not in WGM. Then you just set it all to auto on login/logout. -

All those calendars of your friends, events, etc. that you subscribe to on your Mac...if you use MobileMe for syncing, they are now going to be cluttering up your iPhone calendar, and apparently there is no way to get rid of them (unless you set them all up manually via CalDAV. This is a change that apparently occurred with 3.1.

Thanks.If you draw a picture of how calendars get from your Mac to your phone, it might be easier to sort out. MobileMe calendars sync with your iPhone over the air (either AT&T or WiFi). Calendars "From My Mac" sync with your Mac via the USB cable. Your Mac knows if it's syncing any particular calendar via both paths, but by the time they get to the iPhone, they look like two entirely different calendars, even though their names and contents might be identical. When you add an event on your iPhone, that event will show up on your Mac depending on which path it has to travel. If its calendar is "From My Mac", it will have to wait until the next time you sync with iTunes and the USB cable.
I suggest you select either MobileMe or iTunes, but not both, for syncing if you want to avoid duplicate calendars on your phone. -

You will need to do that by syncing them with a computer and then syncing the computer with the iPad.

SCE 2010 Alerts when windows firewall is turned off
Is it possible in SCE 2010 to have a email alert when someone manually turns off their firewall and does not turn it back on again? And if so how can that be accomplished? Originally I was going to just enforce this from Group Policy but this doesn't allow
people to enable or disable their firewalls. It just enables the firewall and grays out all other options.
This is a Domain with two 2008 R2 servers. The reason people need to be able to turn off their firewalls is for testing purposes.

Knowledge is Power.When the firewall is turned off, it will generate an event log. You could create a monitor Alert Generating NT-Event-Log-Based Rule to monitor this event log.

Mail can not quit every time when i try to turn off the computer
It appears a week ago i guess after i upgrade the system.
when i try to turn off the computer, it always says, Mail can not quit.
so i have to force it exit everytime before i shut down the computer!
and it is pretty slow for Mail to quit, i only have 3 accounts there with one i never use.
i never met this problem before.
looking forward to get an idea here.This issue seemed to resolve itself. Case closed.

back on it loses all it's user names that have been remembered.Do you mean names and passwords in the Password Manager or do you mean that you are no longer logged on to (remembered by) websites after closing and restarting Firefox?
There is a difference between remembering the name and password in the Password Manager and a "remember me" check box on a web page to log you in automatically.<br />
The latter usually involves the creation of a special "remember me" cookie that is stored on your computer and that is send to the server.<br />
If that "remember me" cookie is removed or gets corrupted or is not send to the server then the server won't remember you anymore and you need to sign in once again.
In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":
*do not clear the Cookies
*do not clear the Site Preferences
*do not clear the Saved Passwords
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings

Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.
Clearing cookies will remove all specified (selected) cookies including cookies with an allow exception. -
Problem: Fan at full speed all the time - even when the Mac is turned off

my Mac mini suffers from a very strange problem. I've had it for half a year now and recently bought a new power adaptor since my old one got damaged. I plugged it in and everything was fine - until half an hour afterwards, when the fan suddenly made itself noticeable at full speed. But it didn't stop; it went on, curiously even when I shut the Mac mini down. That's right. even when the system's turned off. The noise is really unbearable and only stops when I plug off the power cord.
Any ideas why this is happening?My Mini started doing this yesterday. I came home from work and the fan was going full blast. Even after shutting the machine down, the fan would continue to run at full speed (and it is LOUD...much louder than my full tower desktop PC with 4 80mm fans). The only way to stop the fan is to completely unplug the Mini from the power supply.
I doubt that this is due to faulty wiring as my Mini is plugged in to a very nice UPS unit that conditions the power.
Now, I'm willing to admit that this may be entirely my fault since I have upgraded my Mini with 1 GB of RAM, a Pioneer DVD burner, and a higher capacity hard drive. However, the Mini has been running 24-hours-a-day for 5-6 months since my final upgrade, so it would seem that my upgrades are unrelated to this issue. Also, since someone else is having the same problem, again, my upgrades seem unrelated.
I was told on another forum to try resetting the PMU, which I will try when I get home today. If it works, I'll post. Seems unlikely though since the fan runs even when the Mini is powered down.
If anyone has any other ideas, I'd be glad to hear them. I'm assuming that my Mini is no longer under the 1-year warranty since I have performed so many upgrades myself, so, if this problem is something that can only be fixed by Apple, then it will probably cost an arm and a leg. -

Just got a Macbook Pro Retina Mid 2014. I have noticed that when the Macbook is turned off or the lid is closed the green light on the charger is blinking. It seems it does this when the Macbook Pro is fully charged and I am not sure if it is a fault with the charger or if it just does this when its fully charged? When the laptop is open and plugged in it doesn't do this.You tried the SMC Rest right?

How can I turn off the age (xxth birthday) in Birthday Calendar - it really is very annoying!?

I'm not sure why I missed the original reply, but here is an Applescript that will change all the years of any selected contacts to 1604 (default for no year).
