Gnome stuck in fallback mode?
I just installed Arch as a virtual desktop using VMware Workstation.
I have installed the drivers mentioned in the Wiki and the computer running it has excellent specs and shouldn't have a problem.
Originally at the start of GDM there was an error message in the form of a dialog box that said it reverted to fallback mode.
I would like to get it out of fallback mode or figure out what is wrong.
My apologies, I should have done that in the original post.

Gnome stuck in fallback mode - not recognizing nvidia drivers
Every time I start a gnome session it is stuck in fallback mode. Checking under System Settings > Details > Graphics I see that the Driver is listed as Unknown and Experience is Fallback. Forced Fallback Mode is OFF. I cannot get it to recognize the nvidia driver (I have also tried nouveau but it did not recognize that either). I have tried re-installing the nvidia driver and rebooting, but I can't seem to fix the problem . Here are the logs that I thought might be relevant. If you need to see anything else please let me know . Thanks.

I remember when I would start the pc that startx I could never get to run, I would always start the gui using gdm, which was the only thing I could get to work. I do not have a .xinitrc. I believe the nx connects and issues gnome-session to start the session but I am not sure. -
[SOLVED]Gnome 3 only fallback mode
I've got an ati radeon hd 4350 graphics-card. I'm using the radeon driver. But, gnome 3 will only boot in fallback mode. Mesa-demos is installed. Glxinfo | grep rendering yields "direct rendering: Yes".
According to Gnome 3 system info, my graphics driver is "Gallium 0.4 on softpipe "
"gnome-shell --replace" yields "failed to create drawable

Re-add Gnome Icon to fallback mode "Applications" menu
Hello,
I'm trying to re-add the gnome icon to the fallback mode "Applications" menu. Currently, the menu only has "Applications" with no gnome foot to the left of it (like how gnome 2 was laid out):
Can anyone suggest how to re-add this icon? I've looked through my theme files but can't seem to find anything relating to the applications menu.
Thanks!
-corteIt's a bug in gnome-themes-standard:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=687314
Until it is not fixed, you have the following options:
- Revert the patch and rebuild gnome-themes-standard.
- Downgrade to gnome-themes-standard 3.6.0.
- Switch to another GTK+ theme. -
Gnome 3′s fallback mode minimum panel size
Hello everyone, I'm new to the international forum but not to archlinux, I use it since 2008.
I open this topic for a problem. it is possible to edit or the minimum size of the gnome panels 3 fallback does not depend on normal size of the font used?.
Now it is 29 but I want it to 24.
I found this guide:
http://k3rnel.net/2011/07/04/gnome-3s-f … anel-size/
anyone can help me to use it?
Thanks to allIt's all because of usermenu applet. You can delete it if you don't need it. Than you can make 24px panel.

Can't get video driver out of fallback mode.
Hi,
I'm running Arch under VMWare Workstation and all seems to be going well except the video driver. Its stuck in fallback mode.
I've looked all over the forum and wiki trying to find an answer, but its not clear exactly what I have to do to fix the issue.
I've tried a couple of things so far.
- removing every video driver other than the VMWare one
- specifiying to load vmware in rc.conf as a startup daemon
- reinstalling the video driver
I think I would need to rebuild the package/kernel, but I am totally confused by how the wiki says to do that.
I have no idea what commands I need to execute to pull logs from my system. Just tell me what they are and I'll post them.
Thanks in Advance,
zeroinfinitiYeah, I have seen the VMware page. Everything is working in Arch, but Gnome 3 is reporting that the graphics experience is "Fallback", where as in my ubuntu install it reports "Standard". For this reason, that page is irrelevant.
I'd still like to know how to resolve the issue, for future reference. I've given up with trying to get it working in WMware and now I'm trying a dual boot of Windows 7 and Arch. I just figured that if its not going to work in a virtual machine then it has to work if Arch is running natively. I'm not interested in VirtualBox as it has no hardware acceleration support at this present time. Plus I just know VMware Workstation better. -
Gnome 3 going into fallback mode
"I just installed Arch as a virtual desktop using VMware Workstation.
I have installed the drivers mentioned in the Wiki and the computer running it has excellent specs and shouldn't have a problem.
Originally at the start of GDM there was an error message in the form of a dialog box that said it reverted to fallback mode.
I would like to get it out of fallback mode or figure out what is wrong."

The last I heard, the Gnome Shell doesn't play well with VMware due to the shell's 3D accelerated graphics requirement, but I've heard it has better results with VirtualBox. I don't really know though. I've never tried to run Gnome 3 in a virtual environment, but here's some links if they help:

Gnome 3 fallback mode for single user
How is it possible to set the gnome 3 fallback mode as default mode for a single user?
All the other users on the system should stay with gnome-shell as default.
@opHi,
You should read the wiki : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gn … lback_mode -
Gnome Fallback mode trash icon problem
clicking on trash icon (which I added to my bottom panel in Gnome Fallback mode) opens Shotwell photo manager.
Also in Places list in top panel, clicking on Home, Desktop or Computer opens Shotwell too.
This started in the last day or so when I noticed it was opening K3b.
I removed K3b from my system and now Shotwell has repaced it as the default for Trash, Home, Desktop and Computer.
Thanks
Regards
Last edited by drum (2012-07-15 22:42:54)It's a bug in gnome-themes-standard:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=687314
Until it is not fixed, you have the following options:
- Revert the patch and rebuild gnome-themes-standard.
- Downgrade to gnome-themes-standard 3.6.0.
- Switch to another GTK+ theme. -
ATi, Gnome 3 & Fallback mode.
i'm sure you have been asked this already and i have looked through the forums but couldn't find a specific answer.
I have a Radeon x1900xtx (R580) using the propriatery drivers (lsmod shows: radeon, afaik that is the proprietary driver), since booting up this morning i am unable to run gnome 3. I heard that fglrx is also having issues. what to do?
Thanks.
Unfortunately GNOME 3 failed to start properly and started in the fallback mode.
This most likely means your system (graphics hardware or driver) is not capable of delivering the full GNOME 3 experience.
Last edited by YellowSnowIsBad (2011-05-01 17:51:42)radeon is the open source driver, fglrx is the closed one. As far as I know, GNOME 3 works fine with the open source driver. Maybe you should check if hardware acceleration is enabled.

[solved] gnome3 only in fallback mode
There a few threads dealing with similar problems, but they are rather old. So I decided to open a new topic.
gnome3 only starts in fallback-mode on my notebook (Lenovo TP x61). I cleaned up my xinitrc and use gdm to start gnome, but still no results.
A few outputs:

Fixing Gnome 3.8 Classic Mode
I've abandoned the no longer supported Fallback mode as very few things are still working. I'm trying to get Classic mode to work the way I want it but have found that it is not conducive to customization. After many searches I still can't find answers to the following:
- How to use Compiz in Gnome 3.8 classic mode?
- How to disable the annoying Clutter effects, such as the log on animation and the upper-left hot corner to the incredibly unhelpful "activities screen"
- How to enable notify-osd
- How to change the color theme for the panels
- How to access any of the options on the panels. I've tried every possible combination of Alt, Windows, Meta, and Right click possible, and none of them work. I can't even add shortcuts to the panels.
- How to make the clutter animations smooth. Compiz ran very smoothly on my computer with the old Gnome, but the animations with clutter are choppy.
- Where to go to access gnome settings other than dconf-editor and gnome-tweak-tools. The settings in both of those are quite limited.
Answers or pointers to any of the above would be appreciated--thanks in advance.- How to use Compiz in Gnome 3.8 classic mode?
have you tried gtk-window-decorator --replace or emerald --replace?
- How to change the color theme for the panels
You need edite the css files for gnome shell classic theme. usr/share/gnome-shell/theme/gnome-classic.css and another files i guess.

you have to learn to develop extensions to customize safely gnome shell.

Inspiron n7010 graphics+gnome3=fallback mode
Hello everyone,
I have a problem. When I tried to install gnome3, it goes into fallback mode. Switching over to the terminal reveals that I don't have 3d acceleration on my card. But I do (works on Ubuntu, anyway). I have an ati graphics card (Mobility Radeon, HD5 something something. lsmod shows HD 5000 series Manhattan).
Also, if this helps, gnome also has an error in which it cannot "contact dconf."
I will be happy to supply any more information, sorry if I'm not very verbose right now xP.
Thanks!
- StevenThe other day when I tried out gnome 3 on my desktop computer, it froze when I left it alone the second time too. Funnily, even my physical reset button wouldn't work. I had to hold down the power button in the end...This was not in fallback mode, though.
Note to self- Stop Trying Out Gnome 3!!!

I tried to use vncserver (tigervnc) on arch with cinnamon or plasma-desktop but when I connect remotely on the machine I get a black screen with cinnamon-session-cinnamon.
and with cinnamon-session-cinnamon-2d I enter in fallback mode. With xfce it's working.

Last edited by dschaefer79 (2014-12-18 09:26:09)Xvnc only provides software OpenGL, but Cinnamon (and Gnome Shell, and Ubuntu Unity) requires hardware OpenGL. So it's normal that only fallback mode works. Running these environments in Xvnc will be possible with the next release of VirtualGL.
Edit: plasma-desktop should work, but not in opengl mode, only in xrender mode or with compositing completely disabled.
