GNU/Linux news sites?

Where are you getting your GNU/Linux news from? I'm already reading LWN and Slashdot. I try to avoid Phoronix because it's a poorly written tabloid (a quote from a recent article that I saw there: "At this point in the Linux enthusiast stage, quantity does equal over quantity does survive if you want to survive." Uhhh....what?). Are there any other worthwhile sites since The H shut down?

Which urls do you mean?
http://www.linuxtoday.com/ is nothing like http://www.tuxmachines.org/
The websites aren't necessarily the same but they have the same headlines that are probably pointing to the same news articles (most likely from phoronix).

  • Where do you get your GNU/Linux news?

    Hi guys. Just a quick question/discussion. Did a search, but it came up with no good results.
    Where do you guys get your daily fix for Linux news, for everything new and exciting in the Linux world?
    I'm still fairly new to Linux. First used it back around Ubuntu 8.10, but then switched back to Windows within a few weeks. Then got back into it around the beginning of this year with 10.04. Before eventually moving to Sabayon for quite a fair bit of time then just recently trying out Arch, and loving it.
    As an Ubuntu user originally, I like to check out the articles on OMGUbuntu for news and info on new applications, or changes, being developed and also DistroWatch for news on new distributions or updates. I also like to read the occasional Linux article on Gizmodo or Lifehacker that they sometimes feature.
    Anyway, where do you like to get your news?

    By and large, I get online news by subscribing to RSS feeds (--I use Google Reader to aggregate them, but there are other options too--), not through normal web pages. If it weren't for RSS, there's no way I'd have time to visit all the webpages I'd want to visit every day. Indeed, I mainly become aware of new posts in these forums through its RSS feed.
    Anyway, here are some broadly linux-related RSS feeds I subscribe to. Most of them have associated webpages too. (Thank goodness I can just export a list from Google Reader or I'd never remember them all...)

  • Display of new messages in inbox list gets trimmed on GNU/Linux

    Thanks to everyone who works on Mozilla Thunderbird. I am running TB 31.1.0 from the Mozilla Build on Debian GNU/Linux 7. I find that when new mail arrives, my inbox list does not scroll to show the messages. I have it sorted by increasing date, so the newest messages arrive at the bottom. The scrollbar changes and I can scroll it manually. I'd really like to see that new mail subject at a quick glance, however. I know I have a message because I get a few pixels of the first new one showing. I used to use TB on Windows all the time and I thought it featured a behavior that would autoscroll to show at least a few of the newest messages. My window is sized so about 14 rows are showing at one time and I have about 175 messages in my inbox. When I have read all mail, I usually leave the list scrolled so the last message is at the bottom. I'll attach a screenshot (I think I can do that in a reply). So my questions are: am I missing some way to enable the behavior I desire? If not, should I get involved as a developer and try to fix the code to behave the way I would like? Does TB behave on Windows the way I describe?

    summer14, In case you haven't resolved this yet.
    polzbert's solustion is excellent, assuming you have a backup drive using Time Machine. However, did you try rebuilding the inbox? If not, here's how:
    Select the mail box that's giving you trouble in the left pane of Apple Mail. Then choose "rebuild" iunder the Mailbox Menu Item. This has resolved countless mailbox glitches for me in the past.

  • Running 3.6.23 on Ubuntu 10.10. worked fine on Nationwide's site last week. Now they have a new site and there are many problems. Can I make the browser tell their site its on windows not linux?

  • How do you setup GNU/Linux on an iMac G4 with Panther OS X 10.3.9 ?...

    How do you setup GNU/Linux on an iMac apple computer
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMac_G4
    with Panther OS X 10.3.9
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSX10.3 ?...

    There is a Ubuntu 10.4 version for Mac with PPC architecture; not sure
    how that would work in the computer you may consider running it in.
    Some leads on that kind of discussion can be found by using a Google
    search, and the words: *ubuntu for PPC G4 Mac* + read through results.
    Or choose to search using these terms: *Open Source Linux PPC G4 Mac*
    A few results point back to Apple Discussions, where there were inquiries.
    Note the version of a Linux-type of OS, compatible with Mac PPC hardware,
    on the following page-link: *• Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS (Lucid Lynx)*
    http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/10.04/release/
    {You would have to put the image, as downloaded from such a site, on a CD
    for use as an Installer; then follow any instructions as available to install it.}
    An old page (from 2007?) with some details, some not up-to-date,
    may be of help to a limited degree, from here: Ubuntu PPC wiki
    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ#Is%20Ubuntu%20supported%20on%20PowerPC?
    Or: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ
    See their home page to look for other information on the site: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/
    These wiki groups are like communities, with rules & other such considerations; you
    may be able to also find +Open Source+ sites with information and builds of suitable
    Linux versions capable of running well in an older PPC Mac. There are newer ones
    that would have no problem on a newer Intel-based Mac, of course.
    • Mac Linux Links: (perhaps too dated)
    http://lowendmac.com/linux/index.shtml
    • Comparison of Linux distributions:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparisonof_Linuxdistributions
    Hardware support in the older PPC G4 Mac computer should be considered, in order
    to have the better experience possible with the Linux-based OS; and some specs in
    an old Mac may not be ideal. The graphics processor unit and amount of dedicated
    RAM for the graphics alone, could make a difference; depending on what you had in
    mind when running a Linux-based OS in a PPC Mac. So consider hardware specs.
    Some hardware in the computer may or may not be supported by the Software; and
    then, there may be some problems implementing a Linux OS version in your Mac.
    If you had an old Mac Mini (PPC or early Intel) & considered running Linux, there's
    a page of general ideas worth a peek: http://sowerbutts.com/linux-mac-mini/
    You may not have enough room on the existing internal hard disk drive inside the
    iMac G4, for a complete OS X 10.3.9 or Later OS X, and a partition for Linux in it.
    And, you may find through reading further, if you need to (or don't) start fresh and
    have a partition for each different OS, or not. For organizational purposes and ease
    of removing one system or the other, a partitioned hard disk drive may be best.
    There probably is a way to have Linux on an external bootable hard disk drive; &
    that would have to be compatible with the Mac hardware requirements to be seen
    and used by the computer, and also the ability to restart from Linux into Mac OS X
    would have to exist in the system software. Hopefully without incident.
    You will have some degree of a learning curve in this matter, from reading up on
    the details of any viable Linux versions, through the ones likely to work in your
    old PPC G4 Mac, and then if there are more than two or three good ones, of those
    what one would be most likely to be worth the additional effort to attempt to use in it.
    Depending on the version and specifications of your iMac G4 computer, there could
    be different versions of linux systems capable of running it. However, some items
    may not be supported which you would need to have working, such as wi-fi internet
    and sleep mode, etc; among others. Searching the net does bring up more info.
    {You may find, that going to OS X 10.4.11 would be more worth the effort, in that
    most everything would 'just work' and you can still find many good software bits
    and some fine freeware or low cost shareware to run on it. Linux versions vary
    so much on what they can and cannot do, I would not recommend running it.}
    Since I am not an expert in the matter, hopefully someone with a experimental time
    and results in a similar vintage Mac as yours will reply and give you insightful info.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Gnu/linux on T61p?

    Dear forum members,
    Greetings from lands far away :-)
    I am in the market for a laptop, "specifically" for scientific computing - data processing, running numerical models, coding and visualization (Python, openGL, Tcl/Tk, Vis5d). I have decided to try T61p. I have couple questions/concerns, please.
    1. Is gnu/linux available (preloaded) on the T61p? I am a long time Debian/Ubuntu user. I wonder why lenovo doesn't mention about the availability of gnu/linux on the T61p? It is mentioned here tho: http://www.desktoplinux.com/news/NS8001895768.html
    2. I am planning on the following configuration:
    T9300 (2.5GHz, 800MHz,6MBL2)
    NVIDIA Quadro Fx 570M (256MB OpenGL)
    3GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz
    I heard that usually the gnu/linux preloaded models (at least the ones mentioned on the lenovo page) are available with Intel GMA X3100 integrated chipset, and "NOT" the NVIDIA FX 570M, which I want to have. So if Lenovo sells T61p with gnu/linux preloaded (RHEL, SLED, whatever), then is it possible to keep the same configuration mentioned above?
    3. Finally, I would appreciate it if any of you guys can share any information on the T61p (other than that which is already available from the T61p page) / your experiences/suggestions regarding whether this is a good machine for my requirement(s)..
    Thanks in advance for your time and any help!
    Cheers,
    /rk

    Well, thanks for taking time off to reply. But I guess it takes me back to my original post - that with gnu/linux preloaded models, NVIDIA chipset is "not" an option?!..and as for the processor, only the T7800 is available (I wonder why?) Besides, selecting the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (again, the only option available) delays shipping too?!! Anyways, I have heard good things about the opensource "madwifi" driver for Atheros, which is available with T61p (windoze preloaded).
    Does anyone know of any benchmarks (a URL would be helpful) with reference to the CPU temperature when cpu intensive and graphics intensive computations (T9300 cpu + NVIDIA quadro FX 570M chipset). I am really interested in knowing what would be the temps for extended usage and/or multitasking.
    Thanks,
    /rk

  • Memory leak under GNU/Linux when using exec()

    Hi,
    We detected that our application was taking all the free memory of the computer when we were using intensively and periodically the method exec() to execute some commands of the OS. The OS of the computer is a GNU/Linux based OS.
    So, in order to do some monitoring we decided to wrote a simple program that called exec() infinite number of times, and using the profiler tool of Netbeans we saw a memory leak in the program because the number of surviving generations increased during all the execution time. The classes that have more surviving generations are java.lang.ref.Finalizer, java.io.FileDescriptor and byte[].
    We also decided to test this simple program using Windows, and in that OS we saw that the memory leak disappeared: the number of surviving generations was almost stable.
    I attach you the code of the program.
    import java.io.BufferedReader;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.io.InputStream;
    import java.io.InputStreamReader;
    public class testExec
        public static void main(String args[]) throws IOException, InterruptedException
            Runtime runtime = Runtime.getRuntime();
            while (true)
                Process process = null;
                InputStream is = null;
                InputStreamReader isr = null;
                BufferedReader br = null;
                try
                    process = runtime.exec("ls");
                    //process = runtime.exec("cmd /c dir");
                    is = process.getInputStream();
                    isr = new InputStreamReader(is);
                    br = new BufferedReader(isr);
                    String line;
                    while ((line = br.readLine()) != null)
                        System.out.println(line);
                finally
                    process.waitFor();
                    if (is != null)
                        is.close();
                    if (isr != null)
                        isr.close();
                    if (br != null)
                        br.close();
                    if (process != null)
                        process.destroy();
    }¿Is anything wrong with the test program we wrote? (we know that is not usual to call infinite times the command ls/dir, but it's just a test)
    ¿Why do we have a memory leak in Linux but not in Windows?
    I will appreciate any help or ideas. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Joby,
    From our last profiling results, we haven't found yet a proper solution. We think that probably the problem is caused by the byte[]'s/FileInputStreams created by the class UNIXProcess that manage the stdin, stdout and stderr streams. It seems that these byte arrays cannot be removed correctly by the garbage collector and they become bigger and bigger, so at the end they took all the memory of the system.
    We downloaded the last version of OpenJDK 6 (build b19) and modified UNIXProcess.java.linux so when we call its method destroy(), we assign to null those streams. We did that because we wanted to indicate to the garbage collector that these objects could be removed, as we saw that the close() methods doesn't do anything on their implementation.
    public void destroy() {
         // There is a risk that pid will be recycled, causing us to
         // kill the wrong process!  So we only terminate processes
         // that appear to still be running.  Even with this check,
         // there is an unavoidable race condition here, but the window
         // is very small, and OSes try hard to not recycle pids too
         // soon, so this is quite safe.
         synchronized (this) {
             if (!hasExited)
              destroyProcess(pid);
            try {
                stdin_stream.close();
                stdout_stream.close();
                stderr_stream.close();
                // LINES WE ADDED
                stdin_stream = null;
                stdout_stream = null;
                stderr_stream = null;
            } catch (IOException e) {
                // ignore
                e.printStackTrace();
        }But this didn't work at all. We saw that we were able to execute for a long time our application and that the free memory of the system wasn't decreasing as before, but we did some profiling with this custom JVM and the test application and we still see more or less the same behaviour: lots of surviving generations, at some point increase of the used heap to the maximum allowed, and finally the crash of the test app.
    So sadly, we still don't have a solution for that problem. You could try to compile OpenJDK 6, modify it, and try it with your program to see if the last version works for you. Compiling OpenJDK 6 in Linux is quite easy: you just have to download the source and the binaries from here and configure your environment with something like this:
    export ANT_HOME=/opt/apache-ant-1.7.1/
    export ALT_BOOTDIR=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun
    export ALT_OUTPUTDIR=/tmp/openjdk
    export ALT_BINARY_PLUGS_PATH=/opt/openjdk-binary-plugs/
    export ALT_JDK_IMPORT_PATH=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=
    export CLASSPATH=
    export JAVA_HOME=
    export LANG=C
    export CC=/usr/bin/gcc-4.3
    export CXX=/usr/bin/g++-4.3Hope it helps Joby :)
    Cheers.

    Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
    If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

Am I doing something wrong?

    I know nothing about Java Sound, but the items you're comparing in this line are not even close:
    if (!line.getLineInfo().matches(info)) This is what println says they are (for the first mixer in my system):
    line.getLineInfo====>interface SourceDataLine supporting 8 audio formats, and buffers of at least 32 bytes
    info====>interface SourceDataLine supporting format PCM_SIGNED 44100.0 Hz, 16 bit, stereo, 4 bytes/frame, little-endian

  • Help launching new site

    Hi - I am finally ready to launch, publish, load my newly designed site.
    This is not really a new site but fully redesigned with new files, on a different computer, by a different person than the current site.
    I have set-up my server. The test connection works.
    I have left the Root Directory blank.
    All the files are saved on my computer in the: Sites folder, then in: Michael_Gabriel_Music folder.  They have been uploaded to the remote server.
    I have a file named: index.html in the main folder: Michael_Gabriel_Music.  Each additional page has a folder with its page html.
    The site is http://michaelgabrielmusic.com.  Right now it is the old version - the new version is darker.
    Any thoughts on what is going wrong?
    I appriciate the help!

    I think bregent has the answer.
    I use a standard Linux/Apache server, which defines the root folder for websites as /public_html/
    When you set up your server, you should see a blank for Root Directory. If you don't have that filled out correctly, your website will upload in the wrong place.
    Microsoft IIS (Windows) servers have a different default root directory for websites.
    Call your hosting provider and ask where your root is and correctly define that for your server settings in Dreamweaver and you will be able to upload and see your new website.
