Going to college and need to transfer iTunes from home computer to labtop

What is the easiest way to transfer iTunes from one computer to another, do you suggest using a flash drive? Will that still allow me to access iTunes from both my home computer and my new labtop? Will I still be able to listen to my music from both computers? Thanks for any help!

+What is the easiest way to transfer iTunes from one computer to another,+
On the new one, download iTunes from the Apple site and install it. Copy the Music folder from the old PC to the new one. If your library contains any iTunes Store purchases, make sure to authorize the laptop to the same account.
+do you suggest using a flash drive?+
Yes, but first compare the size of your music library to the available capacity on the flash drive. Some music libraries are bigger than a flash drive can hold, in which case you will have to do it in several batches, or use a bigger medium such as an external HD.
+Will that still allow me to access iTunes from both my home computer and my new labtop?+
Yes.
+Will I still be able to listen to my music from both computers?+
Yes.

If you need to change the iCloud ID on your new phone you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

How do I transfer iTunes from one computer to another?

This really depends on how technical you want to get, and how much of the library data you want to retain. First, there is getting the actual song files over to your new computer. If both computers are on the same network and are on iTunes 9, you can use home sharing to transfer the song files to your new computer.
Once the files are transferred, now you have to get all of the metadata transferred, like Playlists and Song Ratings. There is a method for doing this that involves editing your Library.xml file to transfer Playlists, Playcounts, etc..
If all you want to transfer is your Playlists and song files, there are programs that will back up your playlists so you can transfer them to a new computer, but if you're able to do the above XML edits (which are pretty simple), that is preferred (and cheaper).

You are trying to use home sharing, you are logged into the same account for sharing on both computers (and they are connected to the same wifi network), and what happens when you try to copy your library ? Can you update your iTunes so that they are the same on both ?

    Hi,
A painless way to do it ...
From your Old Computer... Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..
Backup iTunes to an External Drive

An Added Bonus is that you will then have a Backup of iTunes...

how do I transfer itunes from an old computer to a new computer

Unless you've moved away from the default iTunes settings simply copying the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the source machine into <User's Music> on the target computer (over a network, or via an intermediate copy on a portable drive) will transfer the library.
See this migrate iTunes library post for more.
This gives you the same library, not a new library with the same content.

  • Lost iTunes on computer and need to transfer them from iPod

I had an external hard drive with all my music, photos etc saved on it, but it was in a bag that got stolen, so now, the only place it's all stored is on my iPod (30GB).
Firstly, if I take my iPod and MacBook into an Apple Store, will they transfer it all back to my computer? If not, how can I do it?
And also, now I', scared to plug my iPod back into my computer in case it syncs everything and I end up with nothing on my iPod either - is there any way to stop this happening?

You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
    iTunes Keyboard Shortcuts for OSX
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
iPodDisk PPC Mac Only (experimental version available for Intel Macs)
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
There are various programs out there for recovering photos from an iPod, have a look at the ones below. If you search the internet you can find more:
iPod Photo Liberator Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
If you have full resolution copies of the photos on the iPod have a look here: Apple Knowledge Base article - Use Disk Mode to copy photos from iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.

  • Help needed in how to transfer iTunes from old computer to new computer

    Hello!
I'm really struggling in how to work a way to transfer the music from my iTunes on my old computer to my new computer without wiping all of the music from my iPod... does anyone have any ideas?
    Cheers muchly,
    Sarahjk

There are a few things you could do, from networking the two computers, using an external hard drive or even using your iPod to make the move. Have a look at this User Tip: Migrating iTunes for Windows to a new PC
If you can network the computers there is also this one: Copying songs over a network to use with iTunes for Windows
To use your iPod on two computers without accidentally erasing it, change it to manual update on your old computer before connecting it to the new one. Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have loaded iTunes on your new computer and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing content manually on iPod
Another way to load iTunes on your new PC is to copy the songs directly from the iPod. There is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. As iTunes 7 is just out some of these may not have caught up with it yet though I haven't experienced any problems with the Mac software I use.

iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions

There is also a new function in iTunes 7 under File, "Transfer Purchases from iPod" which transfers iTMS purchases. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer

How do I do the transfer to a new computer with a new version of lightroom? I tried to use windows easy transfer to transfer all data and found that it did not work to transfer from vista to windows 8.1. It apparently worked in windows 8, but not 8.1. Any experience? • How do I transfer iTunes from 1 computer to another?

I recently moved to a different city and the iTunes that I was using was on my parent's computer and unfortunately, it did not come with me... Is there a way to back everything up off of my iPod Touch 4G onto another computer? Or do I have to somehow transfer the iTunes from my parent's computer onto this one? Or am I just plain dumb and the answer to my problem is right there in my face?

" Is there a way to back everything up off of my iPod Touch 4G onto another computer?"
No. The music sync is one way - computer to ipod. The exception is itunes purchases. Without syncing : File>Transfer Purchases Make sure you are signed into the account from which the songs were purchased.
You need to move everything from the old computer or backup copy of the old computer to the new one.

You should always have a backup copy of your computer.
If you are moving Mac to Mac, then just copy the entire itunes folder to the new computer.
You can also use Migration assistant.
You can also type "move itunes library" or similar into the search bar.
