Goodbye interactive PDF... Hello Folio !

Last week, Adobe announced that the Folio format will be freely licensed to anyone who wants to dig into it. Sounds great !
But what will be the exact implication of this ? Can more developers tap into the Folio format with plugins for InDesign or completely new applications ? Will other providers be able to host and serve Folio’s ? Will viewing Folio’s become less of an expensive and exotic experiment on desktops and in browsers ?
Personally, I think this probably explains why they didn't move much further anymore with new Folio features in InDesign, or that "social" experiment to access a folio/article through the web. They initiated and nurtured the format, experimented with it, and now expect and allow others to jump on the bandwagon. In the meantime Adobe can focus and expand their efforts and services on the analysis and marketing level (all that green stuff).
Others voice the less optimistic opinion that the Folio and DPS in general did not leverage enough attraction and results, and by opening it up, Adobe hopes it will survive. After all, the PDF also became a free license and open standard after its haydays on desktops (while mobile was dawning). With HTML5 soaring and blazing at full throttle, any other proprietary or open technique will be lagging behind in both features and numbers.
Adobe afficianados might claim that graphically and visually, Adobe PostScript and PDF are superior to anything else out there, touting refined and sophisticated technologies like typography, transparancy, color fidelity, etc. But newer generations of designers don't care about that, at least not for the majority of their purposes. As long as it looks great on a screen, reads nicely, prints adequately, and is not too difficult to produce, they'll have a go at it. From that viewpoint, HTML5 (with HTML, CSS3 and JavaScript) serves them more than enough.
It's a bit like the beginning of the DTP era, when designers who demanded Berthold typesetting, pristine lithography, and hand-crafted layout, were passed by and felt ignored by youngsters having a ball with PageMaker, FreeHand, ColorStudio. Is it again time to change gears, drop PostScript and PDF output, forget the attempt that Folio made, and go for GIMP, DaFont, and open-source tools ?
It's almost the final week of the year, the Holidays are coming, time for some reflection. Will 2014 bring a Do-It-Yourself Adobe Folio server, or are we going over the (Adobe) Edge, without looking back at how and to what our beloved print tools eventually evolve to ?

  • How do I create an interactive PDF file in InDesign CS6 with Folio Overlays?

I have been trying to export an interactive PDF file using InDesign CS6. It exports fine, and all the content works except for the Folio Overlays I created. I created two Folio Overlays (one Pan & Zoom and one Scrollable Frame). The overlays work if I preview them from the Folio Overlays panel, but they do not work on the PDF document.
I am using File >> Export... to create the PDF document, and I am sure the PDF document is of the interactive type and not the print type. Am I exporting it incorrectly? Is there a specific step that I have missed somewhere? Do I need to create a Folio Build to make the Folio Overlays work?
When I mouse over the Folio Overlays, I get the crosshair cursor which only selects part of the image when I click and drag it.

PDF is one thing. Folios for DPS is another. There is a little bit of
    overlap but not much.
The interactivity in the folio overlays panel is for DPS only.

  • Are there any tutorials on how to create a folio to an interactive pdf?

Is this feature possible at the moment? If yes, would appreciate exact how-to steps. Thanks in advance.

The interactivity in a folio and that of an interactive PDF only overlap
in very small areas. There is no way to convert a folio to PDF.

  • Interactive PDF forms linked in the article to appear in the folio

Can I make an interactive PDF form that can be used in the folio via linking or some other way. I need this book to have a review area with question that can be answered. and since you can create nifty forms in InDesign now, I was wondering if this new form feature can be used in a book you create with the Folio building options.
I have linked a PDF but text imput was not present in the app

Yeah, that is what I suspected as well.  My question is, how force all fields to use the "private version", rather than embedding so I can correct these large files?
I managed to come across another thread on the forum that you commented on a while back.  You suggested running a script, which I attempted (and resulted in error)
The thread: Set default font type and size in formcreated using Acrobat X Pro
    for (var i = 0; i < numFields; i++) {
        var fName = getNthFieldName(i);
        var f = getField(fName);
        if (f.type === "text") {
            f.textFont = font.Arial;
            // Other properties go here
InvalidSetError: Set not possible, invalid or unknown.
    Field.textFont:7:Console undefined:Exec
I feel like I'm getting closer to resolving this.. I'm glad I at least understand the issue now.  It's been puzzling me for a month.

  • How do I create a downloadable link from an Interactive PDF file created out of InDesign CS6?

    Hello,
I created an Interactive PDF file out of InDesign and would like to make the large file a downloadable link and share it with the user in an email. I do not want to use DropBox or GoogleDrive.
The company I contract for has their own site - do I insert the file into the site or can I create a separate link for it?
I will be recreating these presentation PDF's constantly, so I would like to know if there is a simple way to create this link for files in the size of 7-12MB.
Any ideas on downloadable links? I do have flash - but rarely use, perhaps load the file out of flash?
Thank you so much for your help,
    Megan

    Hi Willie,
Thanks for your help. Most likely contact the company who maintains the
site then to share the file with them I'm assuming?

  • InDesign CS5 or 5.5 interactive pdfs  - can I create a button for printing?

    Hello lovely InDesign experts.
I am creating an interactive pdf using CS 5.5 and would like to have a button on each page that, when pushed, opens a print window (so the user can print the page, or range of pages, if they want). I know you can do this to the finished pdf in Acrobat but would prefer to keep everything in InDesign if possible.
Thanking you very much in advance,
    Lisa

And if you're getting into doing stuff in Acrobat these two links are worth reading, the first here written by Bob himself, the second here a cool new way that has been developed, if you requested they add a print button to the list of what you can do and it's possible they probebly would.

  • Email button created in InDesign won't work on Interactive PDF. Anyone know a fix?

Hello there, I am trying to make a e-mail button work after its .swf file is imported into a new iD document and exported as a interactive PDF. I have tried various things and work around but I can not seem to be able top make it wrong. I ask iD twiter for help and after a conversation with them I was told to try here.
    OS: Windows 7, iD Version 9.2.1 x64
This is my process (Will include images and document files)
    1. Create simple solid color box object. Add a text title to the box and otline the text.
    2. Group the objects and make it into a button. Add a roll over appearance.
    3. Add "go to URL" action. One sample button URL is: mailto:test@email(dot)com, Second sample URL is: mailto://test@email(dot)com (the forum editor kept making links to this fake emails)
    4. Export iD document to .swf (Settings where default)
NOTE* Here the .swf open in chrome and the email buttons work fine as a .swf alone
    5. Import the SWF into a new iD file. Export this second iD file to an Interactive PDF (Seetings where default)
After doing this I click on the email buttons inside the interactive PDF but they dont start my email app (Outlook 2013) However every time I click either button a new empty Google Chrome window opens.
Here is a dropbox link to the files themselves, the type is outlines so no need to worry for missing fonts. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/fp76buzt98td8fy/4DD6tqImd9
I hope someone can help me getting this fixed. Http:// Link buttons work fine on interactive PDF's following this process. For soem reason the email ones are the only ones that wont work. I have to use this process because I am working with an interactive PDF that has an animated roll over menue that does not work with ePub so the only way for my project to work the way I want it too is by exporting .swf of the finished file, importing on a new iD file and re-exporting to a interactive PDF.
It was really hard finding anyhting related to this issue im having. Here is the only similar  issue I could find and it is from 2008! http://forums.adobe.com/thread/324167 I do hope I am the one doing something wrong here and not that Adobe has not fixed this .swf email links issue.
    Thanks for the help!
    -Sebastian

Alright thanks! Ok this is what happens in my end:
    - The interactive PDF you sent me works fine. The iD file opens fine as well and is exactly the same process so that checks.
-I exported your iD file to .swf, created a new iD document and imported the exported .swf file from the file you created. I exported this new document to interactive PDF. I open it and again I click the links and only google chrome windows open
This is the link it probably works fine on your end
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/on5tun0v0eunjhu/buttons%20email%20text%20swf%20imported%20to%20i nteractive%20pdf.pdf
I think there is something going on in my end. "Google Chrome" or "Flash" might be intersecting email links or something becuase I cannot get these .swf + interactive pdf combo to open the email client not even after I used your iD file, exported .swf, imported it and export again to interactive pdf.
Again the interactive pdf you sent works fine and when I export my file to interactive pdf it works on my end as well, its only after i export to swf and then I use the file inside iD and export to interactive pdf that it does causes me trouble. I will see what I can do to fix this. At least it was working for you so if its only in my end then its not that bad but it will bugg me forever haha!
Thanks again for your help!! Sorry to take your time Salah!
    -Sebastian

  • Interactive PDF in InDesign - works in Preview, not in export

Hello. I have a multi-state object set up. I've placed buttons over a central map on my page, with links to the proper multi-states in the object below. This works within the Preview Pane when I preview the interactivity. However, when i export non of the buttons bring up any multi-state.
Any ideas? What is changing between using the Preview pane within InDesign, and publishing the interactive PDF?
    I'm using InDesign CS5.5 version 7.5.3

I ended up creating a separate page for each State of the Multi-State object. A pain, yes, but it works, then you create the same illusion, but just have the buttons set to jump to a page and not a "state" within the same page. The MSO's are not that fancy that they should require Flash. I hope that Adobe works on this to make Interactive PDFs more robust in functionality, and in how we prep files. Creating a separate page for each "state" exponentially increases the document size.

  • Create a dynamic breadcrumb in a interactive pdf?

    Hello,
I have an interactive pdf set up in Indesign. I have many pages that are sorted in categories, and each category has a separate contents page.
At the moment I have a manual breadcrumb, so they know where they have come from.
However some of my pages are in two categories. Meaning they can come from different places. I preferably don't want to have to create two pages the same but with different breadcrumbs, so is there a way I can generate this automatically?
    I hope that made sense.
Thank for your help in advance.

Hi, sorry too, but just like ashloucreative
I don't see how to put the code, and your answer did not make it clearer for me (I( don't use acrobat pro really often to be honest.)
THanx for your help !WHen you say "Add it as the MouseUp action of the button." : how must this button be created ? As a regular one ? DOes not work for me in that case ( ? ).

  • Need help with InDesign interactive PDF

Ive created an interactive pdf through InDesign Digital Publishing. When I preview it in the folio builder everything is working the way I set it up. But when I publish and go to adobe's Digital Publishing to view it, only a few pages will show. I tried sharing it with another and they can only view two of the 10 pages. And the 2 pages they see do not work well. I was in CS6 and am upgrading to Cloud hoping that might help? Any ideas of what im doing wrong?

This is my first file I have built in InDesign's Digital Publishing Layout. I built it as an iPad format horizontal and vertical layouts in one file. I added it as an article to one folio (first as pdf and also tried automatic). I created it with buttons, some basic animation (images that fade from one to another). Pretty basic stuff. When I go to view it in the folio builder or folio layers it is fine. When I click on folio producer it sends me to: https://digitalpublishing.acrobat.com/app.html#x=folioproducer to view the "content" which isn't all there. And that is what is seen on the iPad.  Does that make sense? I new to this and obviously doing something wrong. Thanks for any advice to get this to work.

  • Special characters not available in interactive pdf

Hello, when typing in one of the textfields in my interactive pdf I noticed I can't use special characters like é, à, ê, ...Instead I get Ø
I can't choose the font so am I stuck with this characterset?
We need the forms in combination with the forms on our new website. When filled in on the website this interactive pdf gets created automatically so we can work with the data so it's quite important people can fill in their data correctly.
    grtz

What version of InDesign are you using?
Might help an upgrade as a similar error was in CS6 in German where we got different letters than ÄÖÜäöüß.

  • Interactive PDF Form Speed Issues

Hello!  I am looking for some info for an interactive PDF form issue.
A little info on the form:
Created in Acrobat PRO 9.4.5, Windows.
    File Size: 559KB
Ultimately the file is placed up on a website, it is 3 pages with a colored background on each page and a lineart logo.  It has text fields for things like name, phone etc., has some radio buttons, drop-downs, two links to other pages within the site and two links to other PDF docs.  It does not have a flowable layout and is only being populated by the end user.  The form has buttons on the bottom to email, print, save & clear the form.
The form tested fine from our file servers and/or local machines, the client had no issues testing when we sent them the files.  We start to get into issues once the file was posted on their site and the results from testing vary significantly as I would suspect can be somewhat expected due to machine, browser, Acrobat and/or Reader variances etc. but maybe there is something we can do to improve how it functions(?)
Some end-users have come back saying that the form takes a while until they can enter text in any of the fields following their first click in one of the form fields to begin using the form.  Also commented on was that the PDF pages scroll slowly as they move further down the page.  We do not have any details about any browser versions, settings etc. and also did not receive this feedback directly.
Internal testing we have found some of the following accessing the form from their site (the site is a DNN site using a file handling module),
I am going to try and limit the info below as it could get very lengthy w/ all the various outcomes:
I did not have any issues on first click or scrolling in either IE8 or Firefox4, I do however have some slowness when I click the links that go to other pages on their site and also the links to the other PDF documents (I can only get this to occur when I am accessing the form through the link on their site it does not occur when I test any other way either locally from my desktop, our file server or even when I right click the file that resides on the web server and open w/ either of my browsers).
A co-worker tested every which way and could not get any slowness at all any way that she tried.  Another tested and found IE on their machine to have the hangups but not Firefox.  And a third had the initial click slowness (but also said he had that when he saved the file from the site to his desktop and opened it), please note browser & Reader/Acrobat versions probably vary from each person testing.
What I am feeling is that the form itself is ok just that the user variances can produce different outcomes but I just want to check and see if anyone else has had anything similar or has any suggestions to maybe "speed" the form up covering a variety of users.
    Thanks very much!
    Robin

When you fix it in Acrobat, what you want to do specifically is remove whatever action is present in the button and add a "Submit a form" action to the Mouse Up event. Specify that you want to submit the entire PDF and use the mailto URL you showed earlier, making sure there are no spaces.
For it to work in desktop versions of Reader prior to 11, you need to Reader-enabled the document by selecting: File > Save as Other > Reader Extended PDF > Enable More Tools
The button won't work with the native iOS PDF viewer, but certain other PDF viewers such as Adobe Reader and Readdle's PDF Expert allow you to email a filled-in form and will support the button action.

  • Non-interactive PDF forms & licences

    Hello,
I need an advice. I created WD application using non-interactive PDF form. Actually I used UI element InteractiveForm but we didn't place any editable element (text box, dropdown list, ...) into it. We just want to generate the PDF form dynamically. And now we need to know whether it's necessary to buy any licence for this use case. Does somebody know that?
After deployment I can't open the PDF form. The report "500   Internal Server Error ..." is displayed and there is message "... The error is: com.sap.tc.webdynpro.clientserver.adobe.pdfdocument.base.core.PDFDocumentRuntimeException: Failed to UPDATEDATAINPDF ..." in defaltTrace file.
    Thank you in advance!
    Regards
    Zbynek

Thank you very much! The answer was really helpful. But I have one more question. I have changed preview type from INTERACTIVE FORM to PRINT FORM as you recommended but it still doesn't work.
    There is written "
...PDFObjectRuntimeException: Processing exception during a "UsageRights" operation.
com.adobe.ProcessingException: Could not retrieve a password for credential: ReaderRights.
    " in defaultTrace file.
Till now I didn't asked SAP for sending credential. Now I did that. Do you think that it could be the problem? I thought it's not necessary for non-interactive forms.
    Regards,
    Zbynek
