Got iTunes 6 installed... but it wiped my whole library!

Oh my God....... I install iTunes 6.0, and after several attempts to get it to open at all, it finally opens and poof, my library is gone. I was able to recover about half of my songs, but I'm wondering is there anyway how I can set it back to the way it was? I go out and spend like $600 on the iPod and the stuff for it, and it turns out that the software screws me over! I'm scared to plug in my iPod cause it will wipe everything off it. WHAT DO I DO??

hi Adam!
sorry for the delay. my connection went down last night in the middle of me trying to reply to your post. got it written, but couldn't post it.

did your library window go blank? if so, there are a couple of things to check here. there's the "internationalisation" library disappearances (view all):

but if that doesn't seem to be a factor in your case, let's try adapting the advice in this document to your circumstances (you can probably skip the "reinstall" part):

  • TS1717 Itunes re-installed but not opening

Itunes was running on my Windows 7, 64 bit, Core I7 laptop, but it stopped recognizing my ipod touch.  WIndows would see the device, but not Itunes.  So I checked the Apple support site and it suggested totally uninstalling Itunes and Quick Time and associated components and re-installing.  I downloaded the latest Itunes and installed, but I can't get it to open.  WHen I click Itunes, after about 30 seconds I see a message "The file 'Itunes Library.Itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of Itunes".  After that message I see diskactivity for another minute or 2, but I tunes never opens.  I tried uninstalling and re-installing a couple of times but the results are the same.  Any ideas?

You will find the Photoshop program installed in your Applications folder.  It sounds like you are opening the installer instead of Photoshop itself.

  • Itunes 7 installed, but won't open

Hi! I had an older version of itunes (not 6.5, prior to that) and I decided to upgrade to itunes 7. I downloaded it and all was fine, I did not get any error message and it said the installation was successfully completed. However, now my itunes will not open at all. Again, there is no error message, but when I double click it the little hour glass comes up for a moment, then goes away and nothing happens.
I had this same problem some time ago when I tried upgrading to itunes 6.5. Both now and back then I tried all of the suggestions on the website to no avail. Eventually I just uninstalled 6.5 and downloaded my previous version and everthing was fine.
Again this time I have tried every possible solution to get itunes to work, but nothing has helped. Is there anything you can suggest? If nothing else I would like to go back to using itunes 5 or some older version, however now I cannot find those avalible for download on the itunes site. If nothing else could you please direct me to a site that has the version of itunes PRIOR to 6.5 avalible to download for Windows? Thank you.

It says that my computer needs to authorization, but the thing is my computer is and it won't let me authorization. when I get to the itunes store it wants me to upgrade to itunes 7.

  • I've got Blackberry Link installed, but I can't get my BB to sync with my Outlook contacts

I've got Outlook 2010 installed on my laptop.
Blackberry link appears to have installed properly.
When I try to sync my Q5 with Outlook I don't get any error messages, but after the process is completed I check Outlook and none of the contacts have sync'd from my phone to Outlook (but it has successfully sync'd the existing contacts from Outlook to my phone).
Edit: should probably mention that my email address is a gmail account, and most of the contacts in my BB are being pulled from my gmail contacts.  Does that make a difference?

Not sure if the above link will help, worth a look.

please disconnect the ipod, then try again.

i have done this sevaral times i even uninstalled and reinstalled but the same thing happened i even tryed to click more info. but still no luck please help.

I had this issue and was able to fix it by following the instructions in the link below.

This is a link to instructions for uninstalling and re-installing itunes.

I had re-installed itunes previously without successfully fixing this issue.  I think the trick is besides itunes, there are a few other Apples programs you have to uninstall also.  In addition, to make sure the problem is fixed, you should follow the instructions to uninstall the Apple programs in a specific order.  Even after uninstalling the programs, you should check to make sure the relevant folders have been deleted.  It would also help to restart the computer before re-installing itunes.

  • ITunes successfully installed, but cannot locate iTunes anywhere.

Please help. Tried uninstalling and re-installing all Apple-related applications several times. Also deleted all folders prior to reinstalling. After running iTunesSetup, it says iTunes is successfully installed, but there is no tick box to open iTunes after installation. Also, there are no error messages and I can't locate iTunes anywhere. Looked at other discussions, but they don't seem to apply. Hope someone can help. Thanks!

    Hello,
Have you tried running MSconfig on your computer, this is what I have done in the past to rectify the issue:

  • ITunes is installed but it will not start

I just updated iTunes and the progam shows as being installed but iTunes will not start.

I have had this problem - started two days ago. (Win 7 Enterprise 64-bit OS.) I have not added anything new recently that could cause a conflict (upgrades, new software, etc). Suddenly it didn't work - will not open. In Windows Task Manager I can see that it starts and then stops without opening. I've plugged in my IPhone, IPad and IPod and nothing will connect. Some forum threads suggest removing/reinstalling QuickTime and some have found that to work. Didn't for me. It will open if "Run as Administrator" is used, but that - according to threads - suggests third-party add ons as a problem. Not the case with mine. I completely removed all of the ITunes software (Bonjour, Mobile Support, etc.) and reinstalled. Nothing changed. I am so frustrated with Apple on this - I found nothing in the support discussions to help. Quite frankly, I do not understand why Apple, with tech equipment that is so well designed and elegant, still puts out such a lousy piece of software that you are held hostage to use. I have hit a wall - I hope you get a response and help! I've run out of ideas!

  • ITunes forced an update an wiped out my library

I was able to retrieve my music and movies by "adding folder" where my iTunes is kept, but now my apps are gone.  How can I get them back?

I know what you are talking about but I mean like the literal music... like your mp3 files or whatever format you use...
P.S. to prevent this problem in the future I would turn off "open itunes when this ipod is connected" so when you plug in your ipod, itunes isn't opened and something like this won't happen again.

  • HT1386 how can i get all of my music transferred to my iphone? only itunes purchased songs will transfer, not my whole library.

How can i transfer my itunes music library to my iphone? currently it will only transfer itunes purchased songs and not my whole library.

For non-purchased music like CD rip music, or website downloaded songs, you need some third party software to copy the music from iPod to mac. If you need details, here is a guide about how to get music from iPod to macbook. Hope it helps.

  • How do I make itunes 11 go back to playing my whole library after search

I just upgraded to iTunes 11. I'll search an artist just to find a song more quickly and double click on a song to play it. Then, I'll press x in the search box so it displays my library again, and in previous versions of iTunes after the song ended it would go back to shuffling through my whole library. In iTunes 11, however, it only plays songs by that artist unless I select another song directly from the library. Is there a setting I can change to make it shuffle my library after I've selected a song?

  • I have an iPod Touch and got a new computer; iTunes is installed, but won't sync with my iPod properly.

I am running the new computer under Windows 7, and have tried to sync my iPod.  It uploaded the photos and videos from the iPod, but won't upload the apps or music.  The iPod is also not downloading the new music on the iTunes.  How can I sync what I have on the iPod to the computer, without losing the settings, apps and music already there?

    Hia,
So, the good news is that Quicktime now installed, hoorah!
However, I ran Itunes setup, it all apparently installed OK, but when I try to open it it says that iTunes encountered an unexpected error and has to close with the following error:

    Can you help?

  • Got CS2 To Install but now getting notified that "user name, organization name  or serial number is missing or invalid."

After much frustration, got CS2 installed to replace my now-unsupported CS1. Went to open Adobe Photoshop and got your Adobe Photoshop user name, organization name or serial number is missing or invalid.

First, Ganesh, your response isn't helpful because that link just explains why I had to download CS2 in the first place. Your response is the same that I got through repeated interactions with Adobe support personnel. If you're not going to provide a solution, then do not reply at all.
Second, GautamBehl, that doesn't explain why I was getting the notification when I tried to open Photoshop after successfully installing the CS2. Perhaps I should have been clear and explained that I was installing the "3 disc" CS2 design suite.
Here's the workaround I discovered. I downloaded Photoshop CS2 separately and had no problem. I would suspect that doing likewise with the other programs would get a similar result. I would expect that Adobe would fix the problem with the CS2 suite of programs, but according to my ineractions with Adobe support, are more interested in trying to sell recent software to users that they have just frustrated.

  • Itunes will install but I cannot find it

I keep on trying to install itunes on my vista operating system. It says download completed but there is no icon on my desktop or folder in program files. I do a search and still cannot find it....what do I do...

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?
