Grab will not select

In Grab, the selection function does not work and when I try to use it and then it doesn't work and I hit cancel it takes a long time to clear and the computer responds slowly for a while. I hoped to trash the Grab preferences, but couldn't find any. The screen and window functions work ok.....

I had this problem and it was because I moved Grab to the Apps folder, and when the version was updated at some time, the new one went into the Utilities folder - which I did not notice! So I ket using the one in teh Apps folder unaware of a new version. Just delete the 1.1 version and use the 1.3 version (which is probably already in your Utilities folder) and it works OK.

Selection tool will not select paths?

I am new to illustrator. I created a few closed paths that I filled in with the gradient tool. Then, I made another new closed path. However, when I try to select the first path I made with the selection tool nothing happens. If I hover over the path, green type saying "path" or "anchor" will appear but I cannot click it and it does not show the actual lines of the path. However, If I hover over the last object I created, I can see that path fine, and I can select it. That is the only one. I made sure that the layer is not locked and that I am working on the right layer. It was working fine earlier, but now I have no clue what happened.

There rare many reason this could be happening your item could be
locked or on a locked layer
inside a clipping or transparency mask
has a large object on top, (happens to me often when I have a white plate)
Good methods to troubleshoto this
select all then hide - to test if item is selectable or locked
hide the item on top until you dig down to why you want, make the change, then show all
command click to get past items on top, each click takes you down a layer
check your preferences that object select by path only is off, when that is on you need to be more precise with your clicks as will not select by fill only path
I recommend using the 2nd bullet technique of hiding, this will help you learn a lot about Illustrator

Trackpad will not select user after Mac restart

Trackpad works fine normally but after restart of Mac, will not click on user (cursor moves over it) so I have to use a mouse to click & enter password. All software is up to date. Any ideas.

The following was suggested on another thread but I've tried it & it doesn't solve the issue:
System Preferences > Trackpad > Point & Click
Tap to click
Secondary click
Uncheck the boxes to it if they are checked and recheck them back.
Any other ideas?

Center button will not select items

The center button does not respond, so I am only able to scroll up and down the menu that I'm currently on.
I tried the 5 R's. Then, I tried restoring it to the factory settings, which only got me back to the initial language selection screen (like when I first got the nano). So now, I can only scroll up and down the language choices, but can't even select English!
I'm living in Japan, so I'm not sure about english-speaking service locations.The iPod was given to me as a gift 3 months ago.

Well, I know that there might not be any english speaking locations in your area (although I would think someone in the store would at least speak a little English), but here's another thing to consider:
Go into an Apple store. Find a salesperson, and signal them over to a Mac. Open Dashboard (looks like a little black circle down on the dock, looks like a car dashboard). Click on it.
See what widgets are turned on. There should be a translator. If that is not showing up, click the little Plus in the bottom-left. Scroll through the choices until you find the one that looks like a light blue and white globe. Click it.
That should open up the translator widget (blue and white in color, has 2 text boxes, each with a drop-down menu for language).
Change the top box to English, and the bottom box to Japanese. Type your message in the top box, and it should come out in Japanese on the bottom (might take a minute).
It's not the best translator, but with a combination of that and hand signals, you should be able to communicate.
I know that sounded reall complicated, but if you pick all that apart, it should make sense.
In the very likely event that what I said does not make sense, post back and I'll re-word it!

The selection tools will not select paths.

When objects are selected, the bounding box appears, but the neither the paths or anchor points appear. How do I rectify this? I'm guessing i've accidentally changed a setting but there seems to be little light shed online.

It is the most likely mishit of all, completely surrounded by other keystrokes; you may have thought you you just repeated one of them because it did not work the first time, and then forgotten all about it.

Trackpad will not select anything but does move cursor.

My trackpad for my MacBookPro (10.5.8) suddenly stopped selecting anything. I hear the clicking sound when I press the pad. My mouse works with no problem. I have rebooted a number of times and checked looked the settings in my trackpaf Preferences but didn't change anything. I never really knew there were trackpad preferences until today when I was trying to troubleshoot this problem.

Pearl 9105 - Trackpad scrolls but will not select... Help Please

On Wednesday this week, it was pouring with rain and my jeans got soaked right through and the BB 9105 was in front jean pocket. Later that day, the select function of the trackpad (ie pressing down to select something) stopped working. I assumed it was water damage as devices these days are sensitive to anything. The timing of it all made sense. I waited until Saturday (today) and there was no change.
I am a student, so buying an old replacement phone wasnt an option, I need that phone so I went to a high street phone repair shop who put a new trackpad in I think, or tightened it up (I dont know exactly). I thought this would be the end of my problems. This cost £25 to get fixed. Bottom line is, it was fixed, the trackpad worked perfectly. I asked the guy at the shop what was wrong with it, he didnt know, so I asked if he thought it was water damage and he said he found no sign of it but said it can be difficult to see. So, about 3 hours ago I upgraded to the V6 of the software. As of 15 minutes ago, the same problem has started with the trackpad. The shop is closed tomorrow where I got the phone fixed and from Mon-Fri I work rubbish hours for my summer job (I get up at 6am and am home at 7pm) meaning I can't visit the shop nor can I get anyone else I know to until next Saturday. I can barely afford to pay another £25 for the problem to get re-fixed and am guessing the warranty has been invalidated because of it being tampered with to get fixed.
I just don't know what to do next, I've tried posting on other forms with BB sections but have had no responses yet. Please if you can give me any advice with regards to warranty, or how I can solve the trackpad problem without paying a large amount of cash it would be really appreciated.

I don't want to get into an issue with you here. Having the phone in your pocket when it rains, and dropping your phone in the toilet or bath, or water in general are two different things. I wouldnt be on here if the latter happened because it would be my fault entirely, but if a mobile phone cant handle every day use then I think the manufacturer is to blame. Either that or I buy a rain jacket for my phone

IPod touch will not sync to iTunes music

I have a 2nd generation ipod touch. It is a 28GB. Recently I filled the ipod and have been getting warning messages that it can not sync to to memory. I made adjustments to the playlists that I normallly selected to sync on the ipod along with apps and pictures. When I went into try and selected the music playlists to remove or add it will not check the boxes. I restored my ipod with hopes of begining fresh but it still will not select the music. Apps, pictures or any of the other opitons work fine and allow me to check the boxes. I have attached my phone and ipad and made adjustments to the music with no issues.
Any ideas on what to do? Restoring from a backup will not allow me to get any new music on my ipod.

Why won't it sync? Are you getting any sort of error message during the sync process? If so what is the exact wording of that error message? If this the computer you normally sync the iPod with?

IPhoto 9.1 will not load my library that I transferred from a backup.

I recently started fresh on a new hard drive with my 13" Mac Core 2 Duo OSX 10.6.8 iPhoto 9.1. I saved my pictures folder to an external HD formatted in mac journaled and when I attempt to open it from the library file it will not allow me to. I hold down option to open, select the library file that i copied to my hd but when i hit "Open" it will not select it. Like I never pressed the open button. I can do it over and over and the same thing happens. When I try to load from the library it sees it says "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable". If I try to rebuild it it says the same thing. I have trashed the plist file, restarted, tried everything I could think of multiple times. I even tried starting iphoto fresh and dragging the library file to the program window and I get "Unreadable Files: 134

Like others, I have a lot of pictures that I don't want to have to reorganize. Luckily I have Adobe photoshop organizer and from what I can tell it has most of my pictures, but I never use that. I always use iPhoto so I'm worried some pics aren't in photoshop. Any suggestions?

You can give this a try to see if you can get a working library with all of the original file from your current library:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Open the library package like this.
2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

Direct Selection Tool Will Not Scale

For some reason my direct selection tool will not scale or stretch any vector or raster imgaes - CS5. I can only grab a corner and simply move the art. Does anyone have a fix for this? Maybe I hit some quick command keys and did not know it?

The Direct Selection Tool (the white arrow, shortcut "a") has never had that capability. All it's ever done is select and move points. You need to use the Selection Tool (the black arrow, shortcut "v") to do those things. If you want to scale, stretch, etc... a sub-selection of an object, you can make your selection with the white arrow and then use the transform tool (shortcut "e") to modify what you selected.

I would like to use time Machine to back up to a network SMB drive. I can see the drive on my desktop but it will not show in the time machine window to be able to select it

I currently have a mini server (OSX10.8.5, server 2.2.2) that I am using Time Machine to back up 4 external drives that are connected to the server via firewire 800. I would like to use Time Machine to back up to a windows network SMB drive. I can see the drive on my desktop but it will not show in the time machine window to be able to select it for use.

The supported targets for Time Machine backups are local (direct-connected) disks, and network targets include Time Capsule, a disk hanging off the current-generation AirPort (though not earlier AirPort devices), and OS X Server systems.
The Time Machine storage is based on the HFS+ file system, so I would not expect TM to work with SMB file services.
While there are hacks to allow Time Machine to access network drives, I would not consider those to be reliable. Skim the forum and the 'net for related details, and for previous discussions of setting this up and the related issues that can arise.
Remember to test the recovery with whatever you decide to use; whole point of backups is the ability to restore the data, after all.

VIP selection will not work on contact with multiple email addresses

Trying to add more people to my VIP list. When selecting a name that has multiple email addresses, I select the address I want added and selection will not "stick" or accept that contact to VIP list.

Well first off... I'm baffled that you succeeded in setting up personal email without a data plan.
You need a data plan to access the BIS network which allows you web browsing (off wifi), email, BBM and the like.

I have just updated my Ipod to the latest ios.(deleting everything) and using different sources to get my music back it seems that every time i select multiple/individual songs on itunes i can change artwork but will not show up on my ipod?

I have a windows 8 computer and have recently updated my ipod to the latest ios and it has wiped my Ipod clean except for my photos. whilst trying to get my music back using different sources like CD's and stuff i cant seem to get any album art to load on my Ipod? I can go on itunes and highlight single/multiple items and change the artwork and my computer will confirm it but when I look on my Ipod it doesnt display any art work or allow me to change the artwork that is already there? i need help please!

Album artwork can be added/changed on songs via the iTunes Get Info menu item from the File menu. Note that music that you loaded from CDs will not have any artwork. If you want to aquire artwork you can try the File menu item Library > Get Artwork or you can download artwork from the internet, etc. Note that just changing artwork on your computer won't affect the iPod until you sync.
If the artwork is correct on your computer iTunes then delete all the music on your iPod by syncing with iTunes with no music selected. Then reload the music onto your iPod by again syncing with iTunes with all the music you want selected.

For the 2nd day my iPhone 5 will not let me download updates for apps. When i click update, it acts as if it is going to update but puts all apps in "waiting" status. I've tried selecting each, as well as deleting and re-downloading but to no avail.

Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!
