Gradients and PDF frame edge problems

I have a document that has a series of cut-out bottles on a gradiant background.
If I print this document to a color printer, it looks fine.
If I print it to a PDF, however, all of the frame edges appear (that is, the frame edges of the cut-out bottles). If I lose the gradient, this problem no longer occurs.
Can someone please explain how to resolve this problem (and why it's happenning to begin with)?
Thanks in advance.

In rereading the post, I may have misinterpreted what you were saying originally (a screen capture is a wonderful way to show us what you are talking about). I thought you were saying the transparent background area was showing as a differnt shade from the rest of the background, but I realize now that probably is not what you meant at all.
First off let's try to get some more details about the file, and about the intended final output. Will this print on a press, or digitally? Are the colors Spot or Process?
What settings are you using to make the PDF? You said "print" to PDF, and if that's the case, you're flattening transparency and what you desbcibe as frame edges showing might be thin white lines at the image bounding boxes. These are called "stitching" and are a flattening artifact that shows on screen and in low resolution prints made from the PDF, but generally not in press output.
Print to PDF is a distillation process and ALWAYS makes PDF with flattened transparency. It's far better to leave transparency live for as long as possible, ideally letting the printer's RIP do the flattening. To keep live transparency you must EXPORT to PDF, not print (and starting in CS5 you for printed output you need to change the default on export from PDF [Interactive] to PDF [Print]) and use Acrobat 5 or higher compatibility. The Press Quality preset is one good choice if you are going to press and you are controlling color management on your end because you know the print conditions (it converts all colors to process and a single output profile). PDF/X-4 will preserve all colors and embedded profiles for the Printer's RIP to do the color management, but not all printers are up to date enough to handle this.

  • RightFax and PDF result in 'Problem Converting Fax Body or Cover Sheet'

    Hi All:
We are trying to send out faxes of invoices and reports to our customers.  We have RightFax software and have used it for a long time.  We are converting our reports to PDF and send them to RightFax.  I am getting 'Problem Converting Fax Body or Cover Sheet'.  I can create a PDF from a word document and it will send it, but files output from SSRS errors.  What is different between the two.

    Hi All,
We use RightFax and to get around the problem of
Problem Converting Fax Body or Cover Sheet we were told to
open up the PDF you want to send and click print
Select the RightFax printer and hit print.
It will now open up the RightFax window with the PDF attached and you just add in the telephon number and other details
as you would send your fax.

  • InDesign CS4 Export and PDF Printing Problem

Whenever we print PDFs created from InDesign CS4 documents that contain transparencies, drop shadows or gradients we've been having issues. White boxes will appear instead of the drop shadows and transparencies, and the colors of the gradient images will be completely different from what's in the original file. Of course, the PDF always looks perfect on the screen, and the .indd document prints correctly. The problems only occur when we print the PDFs.
We create the PDFs in InDesign using the File>Export function, and we've tried every version of PDF compatibility from 4 to 8. We're not exactly sure if this is an InDesign issue or an Acrobat issue, but we wanted to check and see if there's something specific we need to do doing during the exporting process to prevent this from happening.
Our IT department has been working on this but they're stumped, and the fine folks at Xerox insist that our printers are "fully operational."
We quickly looked through previous postings and didn't see another problem like this one listed, but we apologize if this has already been addressed and we are posting the same issue twice.
Any suggestions or insight anyone can offer is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks Bob! I followed the information the links you provided and it solved our problems! I won't bore you with the details of how long how many different people have been trying to solve this issue, but let's just say it's a lot.
You are being virtually hugged and/or high-fived by our entire Communications, IT and Printing Departments. THANK YOU!

  • SVG to PDF/AI gradient and transparency issues

This is probably quite off topic for these forums, so apologies for that up front, but I can't seem to get answers in more appropriate places.
I am trying to use inkscape or rsvg-convert, which both use cairo, to convert SVG to PDF.
Firstly, when I open the SVG in Illustrator directly, everything works as expected, but the cairo converted PDF has a couple of problems.
Typically I get "An unknown  shading type was encountered" and the offending shapes are un-editable  "images" with a clipping mask over them.
There are two  circumstances that result in problems for me.
    1) A gradient with  only 2 stops.
In the following example I have duplicated the  offset="0" stop which fixes things and means that the resulting shape  that is filled with this gradient works fine. Without the duplicate  declaration, the gradient is converted to  an un-editable image with a  clipping mask when the PDF is viewed in Illustrator.
       <linearGradient id="ian_symbols_b8a58aafc1f12e74492e9e865b7f569b"  gradientUnits="userSpaceOnUse" x1="113.7275" y1="136.9414" x2="197.0259"  y2="136.9414">
        <stop offset="0" style="stop-color:#927A62"  id="stop1472" />
        <stop offset="0"  style="stop-color:#927A62" id="stop1472_dup" />
        <stop  offset="1" style="stop-color:#93866F" id="stop1474" />
       </linearGradient>
    2) A shape that has  an opacity that is less than "1". I don't know how to fix this one and  still maintain the look of the original. I understand that there are  some issues with transparency and the PDF format, but obviously the full  AI version of the PDF format these days supports transparency.
Does anyone have any experience doing server-side conversions of SVG to PDF and have managed to create a PDF which contains gradients and transparency that are actually editable once opened in Illustrator?
Or does anyone know if there is something more I  can do with the original SVG code to make the opacity work ok in the  final PDF?
    Thanks

Works fine for me as .ai with pdf comptible turned on. You may have input transparency in the wrong location in Illustrator. Change opacity in the gradient palette, and not tint in the color palette.
Opacity is 0 here, anything less tha 100% will create tranaprency. To proof in Illustratopr do a Shift Command D to change your background to a checkerboard pattern.

I have been creating forms in InDesign and pulling into Acrobat XI Pro to do form fields. My client would like to fill in the PDF form using Reader, save under a different name locally on their device, and redistribute. The problem I have is that, sometimes, they want to redistribute the form as Read Only. I know how to flatten the form on a mobile device, but uncertain how they can do that with a PC or Mac using Adobe Reader. I looked at FormsCentral thinking there might be a solution going that route, but don't believe there is. Any advice?

FormsCentral won't help with flattening a form. You could set up the form in Acrobat so that the fields are set to read-only, using JavaScript. Not quite the same as flattening but it's the best Reader can do.
Note that when Reader is used to e-sign a document, it gets flattened, but this won't be possible if you need to Reader-enable the form and under certain other conditions.

  • Problems working with non drop and drop frame DVCPRO HD material in project

I am having playback problems with my non drop frame HDV material. It stutters.
All of our projects up to this point have been shot in drop frame. During our last shoot however the Bcam was recorded in non drop. I loaded both the non drop bcam tapes as non drop and the drop frame Acam tapes as drop. All of the drop frame Acam material plays back fine in the source viewer and the timeline. The non drop Bcam material seems to randomly stutter in the source viewer, or causes the system to serve a "dropped frames warning" in the timeline.
Is there a bug with fcp 5.1.2 about mixing non drop and drop frame material in a project. Or is this not possible? They are the same frame rate.
I have exported the non drop clips in a drop frame timeline and re-imported them as drop frame clips - thus correcting the problem. Is this the best solution?
All of the material was loaded thru a kona card as 1080i60 DVCPROHD 29.97
I had no problems capturing the material as long as I used the corrrect firewire setting (ndf vs df).
Anyone have a problem like this? I would greatly appreciate a response.
    Thanks,

The camera can record 60i, and 30F:
"HDV 1080, 50i/60i/30F/25F Recording and Playback capable"
Look at the clips...look at their frame rates. What do they say? Is one 59.94? Is the other 29.97?
You would never need to render if you mixed NDF and DF footage. The footage runs at the same speed, on the TC numbers are different. But, you would need to render if your footage had different frame rates. LOOK AT THE CLIPS.

  • Problems viewing dashboards in Word and PDF

I use Xcelsius 2008, service pack 3 and when I export dashboards to Word and pdf others cannot open and view them.  I send them the files via email, some people can open and use, many cannot.  I have Windows XP sp3, and Office 2007.  This is a problem because some clients can open and use, others cannot.

    Hi,
Craig is on the right track, it is most likely a Adobe Flash Player Version issue.
Read the Supported Platform guide for Xcelsius 2008 SP3 for more details.
                  http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/index?rid=/library/uuid/50fdb3d2-50cc-2c10-e392-a2e481f71694
Make sure they have Adobe Flash Player 9.0.151.0 and above installed.
Another quick test they can do, see if they can open SWF file directly on their Internet Explorer. I doubt the issue is related to WORD or PDF at all.

I created a publisher file, saved it as a pdf. The problem is I created it landscape and it only shows portrait cutting the sides off my document.

Sounds as if you used Microsoft software to make a PDF. If so, and you didn't use Adobe Acrobat ($$), then you need to get help with Publisher -- Adobe Reader only shows what you make.

Apple never bopthered to explain that this would happen
Your iDisk is still accessible after moving to iCloud in exactly the same way as before. Nothing is deleted until June 30th 2012.
, so I could easily have lost ALL of the files I kept on iDisk.
No, you couldn't. Firstly, nothing was deleted from your iDisk. Secondly, any files stored on your iDisk should never be your only copy. Even if your iDisk spontaneously combusted, you should keep local backups elsewhere.
Does Apple WANT people to move their storage elsewhere and stop paying Apple for it?
Yes. Apple doesn't provide such a service anymore, nor are you paying them for it.
Apple has made no effort to suggest remedies for the problem it has given iDisk users
They've provided instructions on how to download your files from your iDisk. What you do with them after that is your choice.

    Back up all data.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • InDesign CS5.5 Addresses Frame Edge Highlighting and Saves Back to CS4

Two of the biggest complaints I've seen over the last year, the inability to turn off frame edge highlighting and only one version back save have have been addressed in CS5.5.
There's a new user preference to turn off the frame edge highlighting and the IDML export opens in CS5 and CS4. Technically, I guess that's only 1.5 versions but there's some hope going forward.
I've got my usual top new features article on my website: http://theindesignguy.com/cs5.5-thoughts.shtml and there's a write up at InDesign Secrets as well: http://indesignsecrets.com/indesign-cs-5-5-announced.php

    Bob:
Two of the biggest complaints I've seen over the last year, the inability to turn off frame edge highlighting and only one version back save have have been addressed in CS5.5....
the IDML export opens in CS5 and CS4. Technically, I guess that's only 1.5 versions but there's some hope going forward.
I think this is kind of an odd way of looking at it.
CS3 can't open CS5's interchange format not because Adobe tried to break compatibility, but because in CS4 a decision was made to revamp the interchange format (from INX to IDML, which is a much better file format), and CS3 could never read IDML. Yeah, there was a decision made not to support writing to INX in CS5, but that's fallout from other decisions.
It's not as if CS5 strips out CS5-specific information when writing to IDML, nor will CS5.5 strip out CS5.5-specific info when writing to IDML. (I don't have CS5.5, but I can 98% guarantee you that's the case). The interchange format is designed to be read by the version it was written in and give you the same document (otherwise roundtripping through IDML to fix corruption would fail, as would exporting to IDML to get the data into external XML tools). It's also hoped that older versions will be able to read it and to safely disregard unknown features.
We should expect that if IDML is truly a future-proof format, as was hoped for, then CS6, CS7, and CS8 (if we get there before Quark comes back!) will all write IDML files that CS4 will theoretically be able to read (wth lower and lower fidelity).
So it's a bit weird to give credit to CS5.5 for being able to write IDML files readable in CS4. That's an outcome from reasonable architectural design decisions made in CS4...

  • Sync and frame rate problems importing video to Flash CS3

Just like the subject states, I am indeed having frame rate problems importing video to Flash CS3.
When I export a video from Premiere with the settings:
    1280x720
    frame rate of 23.976
using H264 or Animation (basically every codec produces the same results),
"embed video on SWF and play in timeline"
When I do this the file exports fine. Playing it in Quicktime works fine and the audio syncs up no problem. But when I import it into Flash using the same settings, for some reason the movie clip is now too fast in that the video does not match the audio and seems to be at more like 12 fps now (just a guestimate). The action of the video is over long before the audio even comes in.I have verified that the frame rate is correct in Flash so it's not that.
I've done this literally hundreds of times in the past and suddenly it does not work and I can not figure out why. I'm not even really using video, but actually artwork that I am putting together as an animatic for an animated piece so the video could not have been imported incorrectly or digitized wrong either. Can someone out there please tell me how to make this work? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
    -Mike

Thanks for you quick response however it really doesn't apply to what I am doing in any way. I will not be uploading the video to a server. I am using the imbed function so I can use it as a layer and then animate over it. It is just reference and will ultimately be deleted. The Fla file does indeed carry the same specs as I stated in my first post. I have done it this way dozens of times and I am trying to figure out why it suddenly will not work.

  • OWA - "Sorry, we ran into a problem" when openingen word and pdfs

    Hi,
I have a weird problem similar to
this one where office web apps will not open my word and pdfs on my SharePoint server. Other documents like excel and powerpoint are working just fine. I'm running SP1+ on both SP2013 and OWA server.
When I open a word or pdf document it opens my document in view mode and displays this error aswell:
It works fine in other browser such as Google Chrome and also if I change emulation mode to IE9.
If I check the debugging of the site I get this error:
Object doesn't support property or method 'selectSingleNode'
My site is added to the local intranet zone.
The problem is only located on our a new Citrix farm. If I compare the IE security settings and the local Intranet zone with my own client that also runs IE11 the settings are the same. However it works fine on my own machine. IF I choose to Reset my Internet
Explorer settings it works also until I log off Citrix completely and back on.
Any idea on what settings causes this behavior?
    Thanks

Check if your IE Is 32 bit or 64 bit.
Also check Office installed on system is 32 bit or 64 bit
do all users face same issue
did you added both OWA and SharePoint URL in trusted site

  • Frame edge highlighting

A new feature in InDesign CS5 is Frame edge highlighting. I find it quite annoying and can't find a way to disable it... anyone know how?

I've figured out that there is a specific function you can no longer perform due to this new "feature."
If you are trying to build a series of effects on an object, and creating the effect you're looking for requires multiple copies of the object stacked exactly on top of each other, in CS4 and earlier, you could build your "layers" of identical objects up and apply your styles as necessary, then select each object by clicking down under the top object and then shift clicking the top object and grouping them together as a single object.
An example of when you'd do this: you need a red box on top of an image, and you want it to be set to "multiply", but you also want it to be opaque, solid red at the top, and then fade down to the multiplied red with a gradient screen applied. As long as you limit your needs to two layers, and there is nothing else in the way, it will work. Add a third, (the yellow in my example) and you in CS4, this wasn't a problem. Just cmd-click down to the bottom layer, then group it to the middle one. Then group that group to the top object, ungroup them all twice, and then group one last time, and you have a single group of 3 objects. yes, that's a lot of "group" and "ungroup" but it's just basically 2 seconds of toggling back and forth with the keyboard shortcuts when you're used to doing it all the time. Thanks to the frame edge highlighting in CS5, this is no longer the possible..
In CS5, when you tunnel down through the stack, because the edges of the boxes you're working on in this situation are exactly overlaid with no hanging bits (such as circles), there is nothing for the frame edge highlighting to "see" of the top object, and so it won't select the top object in the stack when you shift-click on the stack.
    see the attached screenshot.
There is no way to select the three circle layers and put them together as a group without laboriously selecting EVERYTHING and then unselecting things. If you cmd-click down to the bottom circle, and then attempt to shift-click the top layer, it will just deselect the entire stack. This is BROKEN, and in no way productive.
obviously in this example, the fastest thing to do would be select everything, and then deselect the background and the computer image. But in a complex layout, that wouldn't be practical or possible. I've had to start building my objects on the pasteboard, which can be pretty frustrating when you're dealing with something more complex than an empty circle.

  • Tall report in both HTML and PDF

    Hi,
I have a report in 10.1.2.0.2 with three logical parts; a header (logo, column titles), a body (actual data) and footer (column sums, some texts). At the moment I'm just using the main section (not header/trailer) but I'm willing to change.
Depending on the parameters the report will give 1-20 pages (if I was to print them) of output.
I would like to offer both HTML and PDF output but I'm having some issues.
If I set the height of the main section to 25 centimeters/10 inches and run the reports with parameters that produce 2 pages of output, I will get two pages i the PDF perfectly. The HTML will then get a seam (empty row) after 25cm/10In and then continue. The problem is that the second part of data is in a separate html table, making the columns not aligned to the first part.
    So, PDF OK, HTML ugly.
If I set the height of the main section to 250 centimeters/100 inches and run the report again the HTML is fine. One long table and therefore consistent columns.
Now the PDF consists of only one page. It looks fine but after the last row I can scroll down much more as the PDF "page" is really tall now.
    So, PDF ugly, HTML OK.
Any suggestions for acheiving a nice result in both PDF and HTML?
    Kind regards
    Tomas Albinsson
    Stockholm, Sweden

    Many thanks Denis, worked perfectly!
Now the customer has decided that they want the header on each page...
So now I don't need to use your solution but it's good to know how to solve it.
Fortunately (?) I've got a new problem now.
If the output spans two pages I now get one head, the first part of data, head again, rest of data and foot. Fine.
The problem is that the columns of head and data on page two are not aligned with the ones on page one.
So head and data always align, but only withing the page. Page two might be much wider than page one.
This is is HTML output and the frames are set to horizontally fixed.
Seems to be the footer. Didn't help putting it in a horizontally fixed frame of it's own.
    Suggestions?
    Kind regards
    Tomas
