Gray screen covered then a shut down notice

I was just using it and then suddenly, a shade of gray just slowly covered from top of the screen to the bottom of the screen and a black box came up telling me that I need to restart my laptop. And it told me to hold the power button until it shuts down and then hit the power button to turn it on again. It was perfectly fine and that just suddenly happened. What happened? Does anyone have this problem too? I'm not liking the Mac OS C 10.6.3....

What you saw is a kernel panic, usually caused by bad hardware or incompatible software.

  • Hi, my Macbook Pro just shut down for no reason. Before, there were black lines all over the screen. Then it shut down and it started to make beeps (3). What can I do?!

I was using my computer just as usual, I was on Microsoft Words and doing lectures on the Internet. Then, out of nowhere, the screen froze and black lines appeared all over the screen and the computer shut down. The screen was all black, but I think it was still open because my laptop was doing sounds, three beeps. When it beeps, the little light that shows you when your laptop is open is bright, so the beeps and the light are synchronized. AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, help me!!!

There is a hardware problem. Possibly bad RAM. Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • What happens when my iPod have blue screen and then it shuts down?

So today, i was watching YouTube, then suddenly the iPod turns into blue screen for one second and just shuts down, then I turned it on, it still worked, I was a little afraid that my iPod 5 broke, so I searched it up on google, then it comes out that the same problem happened with iPhones that also have iOS 7.1 , so I'm just wondering if anyone that also have iOS7.1 and iPod 5 have that problem, thank you.

Software glitches happen all the time
    If it ocurs again
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

  • Screen flashes then MBP shuts down.

From time to time I get a flashing display then the computer shuts down.
Pressing the power button then restarts and it returns to where it left off.
    MBP 13" Retina - December 2014.

    Hello iansp,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand that your Mac will spontaneously flash the display and then it will shut down.  This indicates there is a kernel panic occuring on the Mac, causing the computer to shut down.  To be honest, troubleshooting a kernel panic can be a tedious and difficult process, so you might want to consider making an appointment at your closest Apple Retail Store, or Apple Authorized Service provider for support.  If you'd like to look at how to troubleshoot a kernel panic, take a look at the link below.

  • OS X: Gray progress bar, then MacBook shuts down

    Hi Apple Community,
Last year I bought my first Mac ever for University and have been quite happy with it so far.
A few days ago I closed my MacBook when its battery was at ~2%. Normally when battery is that low when closing the MacBook it usually goes into hibernation instead of sleep. When put it on power again about an hour later and opened it again it wouldn't start properly. When I try to boot it now, I see the apple logo with the rotating thingy and a progress bar which fills up in about 5 or 7 minutes. After the bar is filled up the MacBook shuts down and I have to do it all again. So the computer never starts.
I did some research on the subject but all of the solutions couldn't help me. Internet recovery doesn't work, because it doesn't allow me to connect to my university VPN (which is necessary to use in uni accomodation). I also don't have a Recovery CD.
When I start Disk Utility (Cmd + Alt + R + P or something) it won't work as well and just tell me that the Macintosh HD "could not be repaired after three tries" or similar.
HOWEVER: It can't be a hardware problem, because I'm running Windowss 7 via bootcamp (from where I'm writing right now) and everything seems to be alright on here.
    My Mac:
MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2012) running on Mavericks.
I'd really appreciate anyone who could help me. I have all my important files synced to my dropbox, but I don't really like the idea of reinstalling OS X
    Thanks in advance,
    Luka

Guess that's really my only option, thanks. I thougt OS X were indestructible.

  • Why does my macbook pro "15 get a blue, black or gray screen and force a shut down?

    Macbook Pro 15 inch
    OS X 10.9.4
    2.4 GHz Intel Cor i7
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
I have had my macbook pro for just over 2 years. About a week ago it started randomly giving me a blue striped, grey, or black screen. The fan pins up and won't stop and either the laptop shuts itself off or I have to force it off. When it restarts it is very slow and sometimes the fan kicks on and won't stop and the screen just stays white after the initial apple and spinning wheel screen, so I have force shut it down and try again. Other times it eventually loads and lets me in but everything responds slowly and takes some time to open. It has been getting worse and now I can't do things like watch Netflix or edit in Final Cut. I have an editing project I must get done this weekend. Any ideas or help? Thanks in advance.

Try running the Apple Hardware Test, not definitive but will pick up the obvious.

  • When I was editing a picture that I reposted on instagram, I hit the edit button and then a white screen appears and randomly shuts down. I have also noticed that my iPod has been crashing about every single 30 minutes!

When I was editing a picture that I reposted on instagram, I hit the edit button and then a white screen appears and randomly shuts down. I have also noticed that my iPod has been crashing about every single 30 minutes! Please help!

The iPod crashing when editing a photo is a known bug in iOS 5.1.1.
    For the other problem.
    Try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order

  • MBP 13" late 2011. when I turn it on it goes to an update screen then just shuts down

Lately I had problems  when I recharged the battery, charging is constantly interrupted... And now, when I turn it on it goes to an update screen, then just shuts down.  O.S: MAVERICKS
    PLEASE  HEEEELP!
    P.D: Sorry for my english.

    LaCalle,
you can try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, select the First Aid tab if it’s not already selected, then press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get past the update screen now?

  • Why does Macbook Pro have gray "curtain"and msg to shut down when playing video online?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard v 10.6.8 and have put on all the security updates.
I bought this machine just days after the newest MBP's were released with Lion because I wanted to stay with Snow Leopard
From the very beginning I would have occasional "gray screens" with a message that I'd encounterd a problem and needed to shut down.  It always occured while I was watching a streaming video online (Flash?) but it didn't always happen.  I updated my Flash plugin and that seemed to help.  I use both Safari and FireFox and both are now updated to the latest versions.
I had also noticed via iCleanMemory that my memory availability was very low .....I always have many tabs open in my browsers and have backup software that backs up to online storage running and when I watched a video, it dropped to almost 0 and everything ran slow.  I had 4 GB Ram.
So, I ordered new ram and put that in and now have 8 GB.  Machine runs fast. Love it....except it keeps giving me that veil of gray and the message to shut down.  It happens several times a day now and while usually in conjunction with watching a video clip, it's not always the case.  But I have lots of available memory.  That wasn't the issue.
I found an Apple Support paper relative to needing a video update on some mid 2010 MBP's and downloaded it.  It won't install and says it won't run on my system so that didn't help.
I'm at my wits' end trying to keep this thing running.  Everytime I have to shut it down it means a minimum of 8 min...sometimes more.....before it will restart.  If I try to restart sooner than that, it begins to boot and then just has lines and lines of numbers and code running across it....and often continuous beeping sounds and I have to hold the button down to shut it off again.  If I wait long enough, it does boot back up and sometimes runs fine as long as I'm not watching video clips, a streaming tv show or clicking on a lot of links in web pages.
I don't believe it has shut down when I was doing anything that wasn't web related....i.e. on a browser. And, when I was running with only 4 gb ram, it rarely shut down, just ran very, very slowly.  Now with 8 gb ram it is speedy but doesn't seem to want to keep working!
Anyone have any ideas what I should try next?
    Thanks
    Paula

    Hi Allan,
    Thanks for your reply.
I have been closing iCleanMemory but the shut down (kernel panic) was still happening.  Not sure how to go about uninstalling it as it's one that runs at start-up and dragging it to the trash might not get rid of it completely.  I"ll find it's web site and see if they have any info.
Haven't checked your web link yet (it's late and gotta get to bed) but will do so tomorrow.
I also run Backblaze and DropBox that begin at startup and are constantly updating in the background, iStatMenus and Sharpshooter.
The kernel panics were happening....tho much less frequently.....before i put iClean Memory on.  If I remember right, I installed it just because I had those periodic shut downs and wondered if it was a lack of memory.  Because I then saw that memory was very low all the time, I decided I must need to put more memory in.  And that seems to have made the issue worse while also making the machine work faster for the time it is running.
Now, I've been working on here for a couple of hours and had no problem at all......but I haven't asked it to play any kind of video.  Before I quit for the night, I'll try to watch the last one I tried that caused it to shut down and see if it does it again.
I do appreciate your help as I have just enough knowledge about these things to be dangerous.
    Paula

  • My computer turns on but then immediately shuts down.

It seems my computer turned itself off in the middle of the night. This morning, when I tried turning it on, it wouldn't leave the white initial screen with the apple logo and the waiting sign so I manually shut it down. I waited a couple of minutes before doing so. Then I turned it back on again and the same thing happened. The third time I turned it on, the white screen appeared and then it shut down on its own! Next time I did the same thing and it took less time before shutting down on its own.
My computer is connected to the energy source. It's not connected directly to the wall, there is a no-break with a very weak battery and that's connected to the power source.
My concern is that there was very little memory left on my computer and I was downloading more movies.
It the problem coming from my computer or is it the energy source?

Try connecting the plug directly to an outlet. That should determine whether it is the energy source or not.
If the same, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • I have just downloaded the latest update for Pages on my iPad and now it can no longer open up documents in iCloud and then just shuts down. What The.

i have just downloaded the latest update for Pages on my iPad and now it can no longer open up documents in iCloud and then just shuts down. What The.

Before the reset quit Pages like this:
Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app.

  • IMac shut down unexpectedly. I tried to restart and it did for a bit, then immediately shut down again.  I've had it for 3 years and this is the first problem. I can't turn it on to give specs.  Any suggestions?

I purchased an iMac approx 3 years ago.  We keep it on almost all the time, however the other night we noticed it was off.  We did not shut it off as we were downstairs watching a movie.  I unplugged the cord, waited 10 to 15 seconds, plugged it back in, wait for a few more seconds and turned it on.  It started up and was almost done booting.  Then it shut down again and I have only gotten it to attempt to turn on.  (the fan kicks in for about 2 seconds and then nothing) Any suggestions?

Try that process of resetting the SMC two or three more times, sometimes it takes more than once. if that doesnt work I could only suggest making an appointment and hauling it in for service.

  • When opening FIrefox (Mac OS) it opens one tab and then immediately shuts down.

When I attempt to start/open FIrefox, now, it begins - checks add-ons, opens one tab - but then immediately shuts down.

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!
