Green Desktop Icon (for the external HD) for Time Machine

After I choosed my external Lacie HD as the BackUp Volume for Time Machine, the icon (on the Desktop) didn't change into the green (original) Time Machine Volume. How can I change that? Thanks a lot for your help, Beat.

I had a similar problem where my HD desktop icon originally changed to the green TM icon then reverted back to the original icon after I made some changes to TM preferences. To get the green TM icon back select the HD icon on your desktop and Get Info (Command-I). At the top of the Get Info dialog box next to the drive's name, click on the icon of the HD. It should have a light blue halo around it when selected. Once selected press the Delete key and the green TM HD icon should appear in place of the original HD icon.
That worked for me.

  • Replacement needed for the Apple sabotaged Mac Time Machine

At the time that the new Apple Time Capsule device came out, I think Apple released an "update" to Time Machine to make it fail. In the good old days, you could start a backup to a drive by connecting the WD drive to each Mac so that it could do the HUGE backup more quickly. THEN you would move the drive to the Apple Airport Extreme WiFi router where the tiny add-on backups would continue. It worked perfectly for 5 years for me.Then the new Time Capsule came out. Time Capsule is an Apple product that is an Airport Extreme with a 1 or 2 TB drive inside. Now, all of a sudden, the file types and names for locally made backups are DIFFERENT!When you back up all your Macs and take the WD drive to the Apple Airport Extreme (Wi Fi Router) it will not build upon the files it finds. Instead it starts OVER at WiFi speeds. Days go by. Still not done. More days. More. More. This is NONSENSE!On top of this horror, Time Machine now gives up on a WD disc when it's about 1/2 full saying, "The disc is OK, but it can't be used any more. Please provide a new disc unit." What an outrage! So I get a 100 TB drive only to have Time Machine give up on it when it reaches 500 GB of stored backup data? What I WISH WD would create is a replacement for Time Machine which is now so full of malicious code as to be nearly completely unusable. Any WD software that will handle multiple machines and does incremental backs up by itself, in the background, perhaps every hour would be fine.  I know you can do it WD! Please? Sherman Keene

First off, you are in the completely wrong forum for a question like that. I don't even know how you ended up here.
I haven't used Vista, or do I plan to, so I'm not sure if it does or not. Windows Server 2003 has a function called Previous Versions that is much like Time Machine (just without the fancy graphics). In W2k3 Server you can get to this by right-clicking a folder and selecting Previous Versions on the client side and Shadow Copies on the server side. This may or may not be in Vista, I'm not sure, but maybe it can get you somewhere.

  • Desktop icon begins as FireWire, eventually becomes Time Machine

Can anyone explain this? The drive set up for Time Machine shows the orange FireWire icon on startup. Sometime after that (often a matter of hours) it changes to the blue Time Machine icon.
I put the machine (Mac Pro, OS X 10.5.7) to sleep when I leave it for some time, and wake it (of course) to continue work.
Everything else seem to work fine. I used Time Machine Editor to change the normal backup interval to every three hours.

    Hello Scott,
To verify that backupd changes the icon from FireWire to Time Machine, I tried an experiment:
    1. Turned machine on. Time Machine drive is external, not powered up.
    2. Turned on Time Machine drive. FireWire icon displayed for it.
    3. Started Activity Monitor, set it to display Active Processes.
    4. Clicked Time Machine, Back Up Now.
    5. Activity Monitor showed backupd running. Time Machine icon animation ran.
    6. Icon for Time Machine drive did not change.
    So the mystery remains.

  • Apple physically replaced the HD on my Imac.  I backed up everything on a Seagate Go Flex Desk for Mac external drive for Mac.  I went through the motions to restore my Iphoto Library back to my computer. Can't find them!!!!!

Apple replaced my hard drive on my Imac.  I'm lucky I backed up everything on a Seagate Go Flex Desk for Mac external drive via Time Machine .  I followed directions in order to restore my iphoto library , but I can't seem to find it on my computer.  Are the files locked?

No reason to assume they are locked. The library will be restored to the location it was backed up from, unless you specified somewhere else. Have you looked in your Pictures Folder?

  • Using the same external drive with Time Machine on new mac?

I recently got a new mac because my old one broke. Thankfully, I had a fresh backup on Time Machine ready to restore onto my new computer. But when I try to use Time Machine with my new computer, it keeps wanting to do a whole new backup. It won't recognize the latest backup to only add new or changed files.
Here's a breakdown of my events:
    new computer
restore Time Machine on new computer at install
want to continue using the external drive with Time Machine from where I left off (only adding new files since the last backup) on my new computer
Time Machine wants to do a whole new backup
Question: How can I continue to use my existing external hard drive with Time Machine on my new computer, picking up where I left off (not a new, complete backup)?
My old computer was Snow Lepoard, my new one is Lion.

That should have left a "trail" in your SystemMigration log, so Time Machine can figure out what happened and automatically "inherit" the old backups.  But sometimes, obviously, that doesn't work.
Since it didn't, there's a chance you can do it manually.  See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • External Drive with Time Machine, booting from external drive with utilitie

I'm using Time Machine now with
a LaCie 1TB external hard drive.
    Everything works fine.
    But, I've been wondering:
Can I place a program like TechTool
on the external drive (that Time Machine uses)
and boot from that external drive.
I would like to be able to do that,
    because diagnostics and repair programs
only works properly and fully when they run from
external drives. Anything on the internal drive can be repaired
and examine. Impossible to do if Techtool is on the same
    drive that's been examined.
Any thoughts as to what I should do?
    Thanks

As V.K. says, you can't boot from TM backups.
But you can restore your entire system from any one of them, per the procedure in #14 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
You can also selectively restore from them, while running normally. See #15 in the FAQ Tip.

Have just installed Mavericks and restarted the MacBook Pro. That was 3 hours ago and after logging in, I got my wallpaper and dock, but none of my desktop icons, just the spinning coloured wheel. It's been like that for 2 hours. Is this normal? What should I do, please?
I tried holding the on/off switch down to make it shut down, but when I turned it back on again, the same thing happened and none of the keys etc makes any difference.
    HELP!!!! Please.

No, what you're experiencing is not normal.
Try booting whilst holding down the Shift key - this will allow you to boot into Safe Mode, disabling third-party kernel extensions, etc. Your Mac will be slow to boot and will operate sluggishly. That's normal. If you can get in using Safe Mode then you have some start-up item that doesn't play well with Mavericks.

Has Apple recently up-dated my OS (Lion) such that every time the screen saver starts it disables Time Machine.  I have to switch-off the computer and re-start in order to undertake  a back-up.  I have now switched of all screen savers.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.
you might be able to take the drive - most cases allow you to open and swap drives - and use this:

    Hello
I bought my wife a new MacBook Pro, in setting it up for her, I took her Time Machine external drive to migrate onto the new machine but her old MBP not only was on 10.6, it was my old machine which I was still Administrator for.
i plugged in the external drive to start the migration process after entering her name and username from the old machine which gave me the options on transferring the old data over.
I also unchecked the Administrative end that had my info hoping that ONLY her data, files, etc., would be the ones sent over to her new machine which I wanted her to be the ONLY Administrator for. All went like clockwork until the restart.
Normally the screen should show the username and only need the password but both entries were blank, as in ‘Other’ sign in option available only. I entered her name and password, nothing….used her username and password, nothing. Used my old Administrator name and password, NOTHING!
I tried defaulting to factory settings from the Restore feature but it directs me to notify Apple. I tried in Terminal to change the password, nothing. I tried to boot from MY external drive and it doesn’t recognize it. I tried to even use my external drive which actually has the Mavericks upgrade, nothing!
Basically I can only get the startup screen which isn’t accepting the username/password or the Restore feature which doesn’t offer any options helpful!
Please, how do I start from scratch and start over here? Or simply change the Administrator name and password so I can proceed with everything thats already on there? I wish I could even boot from another drive but no luck on anything!

First, on the old machine, make your wife's account an admin one. Log into it and delete yours. Then, update the TM backup. Finally, use Internet recovery mode, ⌘⌥R, erase the HD, and restore the OS. One first boot, follow the steps outlined in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

    Do not worry about it.
Time Machine needs that your external drive is formatted in HFS+, or better known as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". This filesystem is used by Apple on Macs and Windows cannot read or write drives formatted with this filesystem, being this the reason why all your devices do not read the external drive except your Mac.
You can only use your external drive to make Time Machine drives. If you store anything different, you may damage the Time Machine structure, so it is better not to use it as a drive to store other data. Instead, get another external drive to do it or create a second partition on the external drive formatted in FAT32 by using Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html FAT32 can be read by Windows PCs

I am using a macbook pro with system 10.6.8. I just discovered that no recent files have been backed up to the external disk using Time Capsule.  There is a long list of backups including most recent but no recent files, for some weeks, have been backed up.  I did a full reset of Time Machine.  I disconnected the external drive and reconnected it. It is not a matter of file types, no files and no folders have gotten backed up.  Everything looks normal though unless one goes hunting for recent files on the back up.

    Many thanks.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:
