Group folders, in the layers palette question

Love groups, but i feel like i'm always closing them, hitting the little triangle to open, but more importantly - (before i close a layered doc,) to close / minimise them.
I wondered if there's a quick way to close all open groups, alt clicking on one, might close them all for example.
Any clues anyone?

Holding down Crtl+Alt (Command+Option on a mac) while clicking the Arrow beside the folder icon in the layers panel toggles open/closing the layer groups.
You have to use the arrow on one of the main groups and not on any of the nested groups in order for all groups to open/close

How do I keep layers from auto-expanding in the Layers Palette?

Hello all. I'm working on a rather complex piece of artwork in Illustrator CC with the latest Mac OS, with several objects on each layer.
Whenever I click an object, its layer in the Layers palette auto-expands, pushing all of the main layers off of the edge of the palette. I then have to click the little arrow to collapse the layer so I can see all of the other layers and (quickly?) get to the one I need.
I am using a Magic Trackpad (don't ask) so this task is particularly arduous, as the cursor is often somewhat difficult to maneuver when attempting to target small UI elements. My display height is only 1050 px, so naturally I would rather not make the layer thumbnails any smaller (25 px.)
Is it possible to disable or defeat the auto-expanding behavior? Any help would be kindly appreciated. Thanks!

Checking the Layers>Top Level Only boxes in the Layers Panel Options palette did not work to stop the triangles/arrows in the Layers palette from turning themselves down when an object is selected that is part of a sublayer.
(This is on Mavericks 9.1 using CS6.)
These two checkboxes are in the Thumbnails section of Layers Panel Options and does not affect the arrow animation on my Mac. I haven't been able to find any combination that stops this behavior, including changing the "Show Layers Only" checkbox.
FEATURE REQUEST: Adobe, an OPTION for this please? We don't all work by targeting sublayers in the layers palette, especially those of us who spend most of our time pawing through someone else's work/setup.

What is the button on the right in the layers palette?

To further what Steve said; just select the object and then look in the Appearance panel to see what Effect has been applied to the object.

The default location for the Layers panel is in the lower right of the Editor (while in Full Edit mode).
If you don't see it, it may have been hidden or minimized. Try going to the Window menu at the top and select Layers from the list. This should unhide or maximize the panel.

Is it possible to prevent expanding the fx sections in the layers palette?

Hi, I create artworks from scratch using multiple layers with a layer style that gives the appearance of oil brushes to my paint stokes.
I need each new document to come with multiple layers and the same layer style. I created an action with a hotkey that creates a new document with 10 layers with same style.
The problem is that the layers get created with expanded fx section under each layer which makes the layer palette very long and I have to click individually on the collapse arrow of each layer to hide all fx sections. This destroys the purpose of my action and I ended changing the action to create just one layer and then after collapsing it I duplicate manually the layer 10 times by pressing Ctrl + j 10 times which doesn't expand the fx sections. The second method is slightly faster but still a hassle and I wonder if there's a way to speed up this annoying task that i do each time I create a new document.
I will greatly appreciate your help.

Bridge copy and paste folders with the same name question

I just copied and pasted a folder named, as an example, "concerts" with a bunch of pictures to another drive with a folder with the same name.
I choosed "substitute" when prompted and all the pics existing in old "concerts" folder have been deleted and replaced with just the new ones.
So pasting a folder can't add files to the folder with the same name, but it completely replaces it. The other prompted option creates a "concerts (1)" new folder.
Luckyly before moving files I always do a backup, so it's not a big issue, but I'm amazed by such behaviour. Also deleted pictures don't appear in the recycle bin. They are completely lost!

Are you on Windows? don't know the options you tell, I have three options (Mac) called: 'cancel', 'replace' and 'auto resolve' when dealing with one file and for multiple files it adds 'skip' to the list and has the option for 'apply all'
Replace does what it says, it replaces files and folders with the same name, auto resolve adds a (1) to the files or other number if more with same name are added.
So pasting a folder can't add files to the folder with the same name, but it completely replaces it. The other prompted option creates a "concerts (1)" new folder.
This is normal and wished behavior, you get a warning if names are the same and a choice to either overwrite them or add them with a new (different) filename.

Heard that before but can't replicate this, they always appear in the trash on my Mac.

Where is the Layers Palette?

I'm using Photoshop Elem. 10 with windows 7. I'm trying to use the full edit, but cannot find the layers pallet. How do I retrieve it? Thanks for any help. Betty

How can I put photos in the layers palette so I can put one over the other.

How can I take 3 photos that are in the project bin and place them in levels so that I can use portions of each photo, and layer them?

Open a blank, new file from the File menu (File>New>blank file). Enter the width & height of your paper stock, resolution 300 px/in, background white, or any other color. This will be your canvas. Ideally, the resolution should be the same value as that of your 3 pictures.
Open picture #1, and with one of the selection tools, e.g. selection brush, lasso tool, select the object that you want
Go to Edit menu>copy to place it on the clipboard
Go back to the canvas
Go to Edit>paste, and the object will be on its own layer.
Use the move tool to position the object, and to resize with the corner handles of the bounding box
Repeat for pictures 2&3

I would like that when I insert files. the endings of the files appear in the Layers palette. Otherwise I have to add manually the extensions (for example ".png") to generate assets for all layers.

I Would appreciate a practical solution

Drag and Drop or placing over the menu gives the same result. Scripting is the only solution here .. i think so

Are there blending modes for the layers?

Like in Photoshop, is it possible to take on shape and blend (multiply, difference, soft light, etc.)the layers? I can't seem to locate it in Illustrator.

Transparency panel.
Layers in Illustrator don't mean the same as Layers in Photoshop. Think of Illustrator's Layers as equal to Photoshop's Layer Groups (folders in the Layers panel), with each object on an Illustrator equivalent to a Layer in Photoshop. You can change the Transparency Blend Mode of any object on a layer independent of the layer itself. If you click on the circle to the right of a Layer's name you can target that layer and change the entire Transparency Blend Mode for the Layer.

Mask layer not visible in layers palete

I have a strange problem, when I apply any kind of mask to a layer in motion 3, the mask icon shows up on the layer to which it was applied in the layers palette, but the mask layer does not show up underneath the layer to which it was applied, thus i can't select the mask to adjust the controls of the mask, I can only toggle it on and off,
I would assume this is a simple user error, but for the life of me I can't find a "show mask layer" setting anywhere,
any insight on this problem would be hugely appreciated.

the disclosure triangle for the entire group is twiddled, showing my layers and any added effects, but for some reason the only thing that shows the presence of a mask is the small square icon on the video layer, but as there is not layer beneath the video layer to click on to adjust mask controls... i have been watching m3 tutorials and the mask always creates a layer in the palette when activated, but for some reason it's not with mine...

Photo Elements 7/8 Editor Layers Palett Icons

The "Create New Layer" and "Duplicate Layer" icons have been moved to the bottom of the layers palette. This makes using these icons much less convenient than when these functions were at the top of the layer palette. ALSO, since the layers palette is usually set to the right and a bit off screen, the "delete layer" icon is out of view since it was moved way to the right (and now at the bottom) of the palette. I am wondering what drove these changes as improvements. For me, each upgrade is a step back in processing efficiency.

Thanks Swarnima (pretty name). But sometimes I still think that software developers design with their heads in the sand. Lets face it, when the little control icons were on the top of the layers palette, it was very efficient to just drag up to the appropriate icon for the required action. Now I have to drag further, or do more keyboard activity. The question I always ask is why or what drove the new requirement for change, since it didn't really add any functionality. I am not a keyboard person I am a mouse click, which is probably a characteristic of a Windows person rather than a Mac person.

Layers palette thumbnail sizes

Using PSE version 2. Works great! Love it! Except... I cannot change the size of the thumbnails in the Layers palette. They remains small no matter what I do. Mysteriously, when I open a file from Jan Kabili's PSE2 Course, all the thumbnails sizes work fine. I can make them small, medium, large. Now, what could be going on here? Any ideas?

Thanks for your response (below) which caused me to do some
experiments with Photoshop Elements 2. This is what I discovered:
• Opening a new file in any normal rectangular preset format, print
or Web-oriented, creates a Layers palette that functions as
advertised - that is, using the palette's contextual menu or the
"Palette Options" under the "More" button at the top of the palette
allows you to change the thumbnail size in the palette - small,
medium, etc. No problems. Eureka! and all that.
• However, opening a new file as a preset "468 x 60 web
banner" (which is what I was doing when I encountered the "problem")
constrains the thumbnail in the Layers palette to small - no other
size options available. After a moment's thought, I realized that,
because the thumbnail for a banner is disproportionately wider than
it is high, allowing for a medium or large thumbnail while
maintaining the thumbnail's proportionality would necessitate a
palette that would be impractically large.
So, it's not a program flaw, it's a feature - how often this seems to
happen.
Thanks for your note which prompted my investigation. I guess the
"take away" from this is that, if you ever get another similar
question, you might ask the inquirer if, by chance, they were working
on a web banner preset size when they encountered the difficulty.
Maybe they're as dense as I am and never made the connection.

I need layers palette over not under images.

Hi,
Photoshop CS4
How can I make the layers palette show on top of images I am working on, it flies out sideways but is under them !! I see no setting for this in preferences>interface.
I have to make them smaller so as to see it, which in itself is the most stupid thing Adobe ever did to the interface, why force the working area smaller, I dont even want it on top covering the bit I am editing ! My screen space is only 60% width for images when that layers panel is opened. For a program that is all about working on images, we need images big, and panels non intrusive into our screen area.
So my second question is how can I have it expand downwards like CS2, I far prefer CS2, I can even see the image that is active as the top bar is blue and others are grey. The number of times now I have found myself seeing nothing happening then discovered the image being affected is different to what I thought, having to look at shades of grey at the top and establish which is the darker denoting the window that is active is nuts. Goes against years of blue active windows bars which worked, instant realisation. I hate CS4, even the way it harmonises with msoft windows seems glitchy, redraw seems to happen in large square chunks, CS2 was instant throughout. minimise and close icons top right are ghosted and its the ghosts that actually function. A thin grey line runs throughout the top wording, on office and home PC's both XP, different graphics cards, both chosen from the Adobe compatible list !
I have CS5 still boxed as I fear Adobe will no doubt make things even worse ! Flash CS5 is worse than CS4, slow and glitchy and users on the internet say the entire CS5 suite is flawed.

ok, now that I have found out how to post images,
Heres the layout that I like in my CS4, palettes top right and when I click e.g. layers it opens downwards, leaving my screen for use with images.
and here is the palette when layers tab clicked on, I dont like though the fact that in CS4 they are taking up 1.5inches more of my screen than in CS2, they wont go any narrower than this. I am running 1024x768, the most the monitor can do, but that's a valid resolution, used it for any years now :-
If I click on the dark grey top to that palette set or on the chevron in the next image
I get this, which is dumb. The icon bar out across screen.
If I was to position this to abutt against screen edge at right it would open palettes OFF screen
If I open some images with my palettes showing having clicked on the dark grey top to the icon bar in the last but one image, I now see they are over the palettes.
I also find the menu atop screen is squiffy, a grey line runs throughout, and the minimise and close buttons are not the dark ones but something in grey slightly lower, see image:-
and having relaunched photoshop CS4 and even made the palette go as the icon bar and back, this time the images are underneath, the whole thing drives me nuts.

Merging 2 documents, and keep the layers structure

Here's my problem :
my workmates and me are working on seperate files (.ai) for our projects, then, we use to merge our document in one main document to save the final project and to make the exports.
BUT, i found nothing in illustrator or on the web about how merging and keep the structure. And on our project, we have a loooot of layers, and it's barely impossible to copy/paste each layer at once. (i'm sure a bunch of you had this problem once.)
On photoshop, it's quite simple, you can export some layers/group in a new document or in a opened.
So i'd like to know if any of you have a solution (if i'm not understood, i can try to explain better my problem), or if it's a known issue (and if the next version will do it well !!!).

First check that the layer structure is identical in both files, both the layer options and the layer stacking order.
Now check Paste Remembers Layers in the layers palette.
Then you can copy and paste between files and things will stack into their correct layers.
