Grouping Compilations

Just now iTunes Help says that grouping complilations can be found in the advanced preferences menu, but I don't see it there. Do you know where it is?

For an album with songs by multiple artists, such as a movie soundtrack. To group such albums together (rather than list each song with its particular artist), choose iTunes > Preferences, click Advanced, and select “Group compilations when browsing.”

Grouping compilations no longer works after adding artwork..!

Until yesterday I had never bothered with adding artwork to my itunes library as I had a gen 3 iPod that would not show it anyway. I have a new ipod so last night I decided to add artwork, this I did by getting what I could from Gracenote, the rest I have been dragging from images on Amazon and other sites. Ever since doing this the Group Compilations option no longer works, despite having this checkbox ticked in preferences and making sure that the yes box for part of a compilation is ticked for these albums. In addition, every song in a compilation album is displayed individually in the Cover Flow view option.
Is this a peculiarity of 7.2 or is there a way I can get this to work again? I am sure it is something to do with having added artwork as it was working fine before.
The help menu in itunes seems to have stopped working too now, which doesn't help...obviously!

How do u get the Ipod touch to group compilations for browsing ?
With Itunes 9 like earlier versions u have the option to group compilations for browsing, having the effect of not putting a huge list of artists in your view by artist list because they played one song on a compilation you have got. With my old Ipod classic this option was also available through the setting menu. Meaning my ipod exactly mirrored my itunes lists.
I have recently purchased a ipod touch 32 and can find no settings that allow me to do the same. My artist list has risen from 200 to 400 because of this and makes finding albums by artists very annoying.
I have looked on the itunes software and can find no mention of syncing this ability to the ipod either.

Yes i do this to group compilations in itunes.
But when i then sync to the ipod touch the albums come up under compilations as desired but the artists also appear in the artist list which is not.
On my old ipod classic it had a setting to group compilations the same as in itunes which would then remove these odd artists from the artist list.
I can find no equivalent setting on the ipod touch

hello everybody.. i have just spent 3 hours reading post forums but nobody could really answear clearly about grouping compilations in itunes 10.
I have my library in an external disk, i have many compilations and now they are divided as artist.. how can I group all in the ORIGINAL compilation list and have them in order like out Itune or the original album pleaseeee

Same problem here. And I thought I'd I figure out how to deal with it by making the Album Artist box blank and checking the Compilation box. I did that for all my multi-artist compilations and the tracks were grouped by album per the CD and listed as "Various Artists". That will allow you to play the album old school.
But, I lost the ability to list the track artist seperately, i.e., I have a compilation CD called EZ Riding' with the classic Golden Earring tune Radar Love. It and all the other tracks ripped into seperate iTunes tracks, not compiled, and there wasn't a single album with all the tracks. But, Golden Earring was a listed artist and if I listed Albums by Artist or looked in the Artist scroll bar, I could see Golden Earring.
After I blanked the Album Artist line for that track and selected Compilation, the Golden Earring track dissappeared from the Album by Artist list and the Artist scroll list, although if I search for them, I get the track id'd.
But I started fooling around with that one track by un-checking the Compilation box and re-inserting the Album Artist and instead of toggling, iTunes dis-aggregated the Album again and it now won't re-aggregate no matter what I do with the Album Artist and Compilation.
Bizarre.

Front row won't group compilations

the itunes pref' allow to group compilations so you don't have 3 million artists. when browsing in front row it doesn't group them, how annoying!!!
any suggestions?

David, Try selecting all the songs in your library (check the check box) then try Front Row. I had the same problem and this worked for me.

IPod group compilations

Hi,
Isn't it possible to group compilations in the iPod app on the iPad like on the iPhone for example? I find it distracting with all the artists from the compilations in the artist list.

Adding an album artist should hook up the album but the individual artists will still be listed in the artists menu. See my article on Grouping tracks into albums for more info.

Group Compilations not working - Pain!!!!

Hey.
Ok, i've gone through my entire library sorting out all the info and stuff like that to make my iTuning more enjoyable.
One thing is Griping me though. I have many compilations. I have them all check as "part of compilation" and even gone to the extent of naming all the album Artist as "Various Artists" But in the library I do not see the "compilation Grouping.
I get all artists listed alphibetically, which is really annoying. I presume the whole point of having a "group compilations" preference is so that it groups them, so whats going wrong>?
I browse my library in coverflow btw. And am using the new Itunes update...
If anyone can shed light on my problem I would be very greatful.

If you're sorting by Artist, iTunes does exactly that — sorts by Artist, regardless of the Compilation checkbox. You need to sort by Album to get the compilations grouped together. Use "Album by Artist" to sort by Compilation status, then Artist, then Album; or use "Album by Year" to sort by Compilation status, then Artist, then Year, then Album.
This makes sense, if you think about it; the "Compilation" label is applied to albums, not artists, so it's only when sorting by album that compilations are pulled out.

Group compilations?

Why oh why oh why does Front Row not have the option to group compilations like itunes does?
This results in thousands and thousands of artists appearing in the "Artists" list that you only have one song for.
This feature alone renders Front Row almost unusable. Why is still not implemented?

As a user, just like yourself, we have no idea why Apple makes decisions about software updates - or the lack thereof. Let them know you'd like that feature in Front Row and maybe it will appear.

Group Compilations When Browsing

I just got the new iPod Classic firmware update, and the group compilations option is still not fixed! Come on Apple! I have 733 artists without the compilations grouped and only 340 when they are grouped. If it's an option in iTunes, there's no reason for it not to be an option on my iPod, just like it was on the 5th generation! Those of us with huge libraries really need this option back, ASAP!

OK, I called tech support about the no compilations thing, and they told me to fill out a feedback form. He said that a lot of the firmware updates are dependent on what people ask for in those forms. So if everybody could start requesting the group compilations option, hopefully we can get it really soon. It will really help the messy coverflow as well.. until then, I guess I'm going to take all my compilations off my iPod!

Grouping Compilation albums together

I have a number of different albums that have different artists on them. I want to go in on my iPod and listen to the whole album all the way through, but when I go to it in "albums" it's listed severel different times and each is by a different artist from the album. Is there any way to group it all as one album even though it has more than one artist? I've tried checking the box "part of a compilation" and "sort by album" those don't seem to work. Thoughts and ideas?

Every song on the album needs to be marked as "Part of a compilation" and also, in the Album Artist box, type in "Various Artists". The screenshot below shows the box highlighted when looking at several songs at the same time:
If tyou use Sync to manage your iPod, the next Sync will add that change to it.
If you use Manually Manage, then you will need to remove the album from the iPod first, make the changes in your iTunes Library and then put back the changed version.

How can I group compilations?

Hi I bought an iPod the other day and have been importing my CD collection ever since.
One of the problems I have encountered is that when I import compilation albums (such as Now 1995 for instance) the songs keep getting grouped apart from each other.
I noticed that this also occurs with solo albums where one or more artists appear on a track but I have gone into the 'get info' and changed the track to just being the one artist who appears on the album.
I am now finding it difficult to overcome the compilation and soundtrack albums and would be very grateful if someone could offer me their advice on how to do this easily.

What happend to "group compilations"?

It used to be that if you unchecked "group compilatioins" in preferences, each of the artists would appear in your artist list in your library. Now these artists aren't listed at all. Is this a bug? Anyone know a fix?

OK. This is strange. My work computer doesn't have this problem. It only is happening on my home computer.
So, at home, artists that only appear in compilations (and grouped as such) aren't showing up individually in the artist list in the column browser. On my work computer (with the same version of Itunes (10.2.2)), this seems to be working fine.
Any ideas?

Compilation not grouping

I just downloaded a compilation album from the iTunes store and it is not grouping together, I have gone into the info and checked that it is a compilation (yes is marked in the drop down menu) under the preferences I have checked group compilations together and still 2 songs are not grouping with the rest of the album.
The only difference in these two songs from the others is that they are live.
What else can I do to get them to group together? (I realize that if I were to change the artist they would group but I like knowing who is singing what song)
Any suggestions?

Sometimes there can be empty spaces hiding in the tags. I would select them all and retype the album name in Get Info. (Do them all at once.)

Group as Compilation Problem (iTunes 6)

I have several compilation cd's ripped to iTunes, but when I view the Library, they're all sorted by Artist name. I have the "group compilation" box checked in Preferences, but they're still not showing up together. They're in the "compilations" folder when I browse using finder, but STILL not showing up together when I browse my iTunes library.
Can someone help me?

This is easy. At the top of the library you see "'Name", "Time", "Artist", "Album", etc.. Click on "Album" to organize by album title in alphabetical order. Click on "Name" to organize by song name. Click again to reverse the order. Right click on any header to open a drop down menu of other columns to add.
