Groups Folder Help

I apologize if this has been answered, but I am in need of a quick answer. When a user logs in and the groups folder mounts, is it actually copying down to the desktop the contents of the groups folder or is an alias of the folder mounted. I had always thought it was an alias and that the only actual files getting copied down were user preferences, however, my network guy is suggesting that our recent slow login (a whole other story) is due to the size of the groups folder being pushed down to individual users.
Can someone clarify this or point me to the actual documentation on this.
These are xserves 10.4.8 and WGM, workstations are all 10.4.8
Thanks a million.

Thanks for your reply. I just needed someone to validate what I believed to be true. Our config is the same throughout our grades and it is only one particular server that exhibits this slow login. All our XServes will be replaced over the summer, so it's just a matter of getting by for the next few months. Also, we had been running rock solid for three years with these guys until a couple of months ago with this one volume.
Thanks again.

  • Group policy helper and Folder Redirection

    I've installed windows7/32 bit to use the Group policy helper. Now I can use this tool.
    I want to use the Group policy helper to redirect folders as descripted in Managing Roaming User Data Deployment Guide.
    In this documentation a folder redirection management snap.in is used. Can I somehow include this in the grouppolicy helper in ZCC11?
    I want to redirect the user folders to their homedirectory. We have about 500 Students and I can't configure every login so I hope to solve the problem using the group policies.
    (with zen7 and XP we configure the default local user to move desktop and user files to NetWare Home directory.)

    This still works..........

  • How do I move email addresses to a group folder?

    Howdy
    I would like to add a few email addresses to a new Group folder. From what I have read on this forum, I should be able to highlight the address I want and drag it to the folder. But it is not working. I can highlight the email address, drag it over to the folder, but it will not enter into the folder.
    I am running Lion, 10.7.3. My email program is the one that comes with the iMac, 5.2.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi, Captfred
    Thank you for your speedy reply. How do I define a group as smart or not? If I remember correctly, there should be a + sign and a - sign at the bottom of the Groups column, so that I can work with them. But they do not appear at the bottom of that column in my mail program.
    Thanks

  • Group Folder problem.

    Hi,
    I have a server configured to share a Group Folder with users in a specific group, the dock and mounts are managed and a dock icon is managed, all this works fine.
    I have one client computer, an iBook G4 with Tiger and the latest updates that has a problem. The Managed dock icon appears as a question mark and nothing happens if clicked. I have checked with the mount command and the group folder is mounted so I assume there is a problem with the dock icon pointing to the wrong location? if so how do I correct this. I can browse the group folder from the iBook in the terminal, the mount is set as hidden on the server.
    The group folder works fine on all the other Mac's for all users, I have the question mark in the dock on the iBook.
    The group folder is a network share and the user accounts are mobile. I have tried to login to the iBook as a network user and have the same problem.
    I'm convinced this is a client problem as everything is fine on the other Mac's. If it makes any difference the server is an iMac G5 with Panther 10.3.9 Server which has all the latest updates applied.
    Any help is appreciated.

    In Project view, click the drop-down field at the top left of the Project viewer. Select "Library".
    You can drill down by clicking the Folder names on the left of the separation bar. There is no way (I know) to collapse or expand the folders in the view, but the drill-down and tunnel-up works well.
    Note that you can sort the +currently shown+ Projects by typing a search term in the search field at the top right of the Project viewer. You might also look into limiting the currently shown items on the Library pane of the Inspector by using that search field, and into setting your current Projects as "Favorites" and selecting "Favorites" from the Library's built-in filters (shown at the top of the drop-down list).
    Cheers. I was driven nuts by that as well.

  • Group Folder not being created

    Within workgroup manager for particular groups I have selected an auto mount folder as a group folder. I have also specified diradmin as the owner. Now I assume once doing that Workgroup Manager should automatically create a folder for that group... however it isn't doing that? Can anybody help me as to why it is not working correctly?

    Hi
    In the past (10.4) it could take anything up to 3 days for the Group folder to be created - yes it's true. Issuing this command:
    sudo /usr/bin/creategroupfolder
    Got it done quickly. Now days I prefer to create my own and make a created group the owner. Less time and fuss.

  • When creating new group, no group folder is being created!

    Hi,
    I passed from standard server to advanced one. I have 2 shared points called "group" and "user" configured on a separate hard drive. When I create a user (create home folder), the home folder is created. When I create a group, no folder is created. So when a user login, his group folder appears with a question mark.
    Afp works fine so since the share point "user" works fine.
    Any ideas?

    Group folder creation is not automatic. You have to open a terminal session on the server, and run the command:
    sudo CreateGroupFolder
    If that doesn't create the folder, check to make sure it's properly set in Workgroup Manager (including having an owner defined), fix any problems, and try it again.

  • Group Folder not displaying on the desktop

    Hi!
    I have made a new and fresh installation of the OSX server 10.6 to a Mac Pro, due the extreme problems what our broken Raid Card caused us. I managed to install it okay, everything is working like before, except group folders.
    I have proper AFP shares made for group folder and the mount shows fine. In the old stystem, I could go to group preferences on WGM, and on the Login / Items, select manage always just add the checkbox to "Add group share point", and the folder would display on the desktop for members of that group. Now it is not working. I actually booted from one backup of the last system and made sure that I have same settings than before.
    What could be a problem here?

    A work around.
    On a client work station:
    In finder, manually mount the share you would like to have show up.  You may need to authenticate.  This is fine.  Do so with any users name on your system that has access to said share.
    Open WGM.  (still on the client work station) You'll likely need to install Server Tools temporarily.
    Select the group or user you would like the MCX to apply to.
    Click Preferences.
    Click the items tab.
    Click Always.
    Click the plus button on the right side.
    Select the mounted share.
    Click Okay
    Select the newly added line item.  It'll probably look like this: afp://server.example.com_.  With a kind: URL
    Put a check box in the "Authenticate selected share point with Users login name and password."
    Click save!
    That should do it.

  • What should default permissions be of the Groups folder be?

    While trying to sort out our Group shared folders permissions problems I might have changed the permissions of the Group folder (/Volumes/Server/Groups) in Server Admin.
    Can anyone tell me what the default permissions for that folder should be?

    I had a similar problem:
    <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5876784#5876784>
    and Gerrit came to the rescue! Wonder if you migrated from Tiger and if so then the above thread might have some answers for you. Seems like the standard Group ID (gid) changed from Tiger to Leopard and has wreaked havoc on file sharing. I was able to remedy my situation (so far - still not thoroughly tested) by changing the gid of all files back to 20...which matches "staff" on the clients. This is still confusing and Apple's documentation is half-baked regarding this as far as I'm concerned.

  • Changing from "Pass Through" as Default in Blend Mode in a Group Folder Layer Set

    Hello Forum gurus!
    Using a MacBook Pro, 10.5.4. Painting with CS2. My question is two-fold.
    When the Group layer folder in a layer set is selected, it is displaying the "Pass Through" blend mode by default. Is there a special convenience to this? (Best use for pass through blend mode)
    Also, How may I change the default in this mode to be "Normal" as the setting when creating a Group folder layer set?
    Thanks!!
    Colene

    Matthias, now I understand. We're both right from different perspectives. If you want the adjustment layer (should there be one within the group) to affect all layers below the group (perhaps because that's the way the image looked before you made the group in the first place), then Pass Through is your blend mode. If you want that adjustment layer to affect only those layers within the group (which I often do), then Normal (or some other) is your blend mode.

  • Easily duplicate / paste layer in different group folder?

    I design Web sites using Layer Comps so the homepage and innerpage examples are all in one .PSD. This means my Photoshop CC file has TONS of layers and folders that require me to scroll in the Layers Palette.
    Is there a way to copy/paste or move a layer to a different group folder without dragging it? Copy/paste for layer styles is a great tool. Is there anything like this for layers themselves?
    Sometimes I resort to opening a blank PSD to drag the layer to that, then go back to my source document and auto select the new group I want it in, flip back to the blank doc and drag the layer from there. That is not a great workaround if I want the positioning to be the same as the original layer.
    Thanks!

    Hi Nik,
    use of with() is generally not good, maybe:
    http://yuiblog.com/blog/2006/04/11/with-statement-considered-harmful/
    without with() it looks like that:
    #target illustrator
    var docRef = app.activeDocument;
    var ln = 'Layer 1';
    var ol = docRef.layers.getByName(ln);
    var nl = docRef.layers.add();
    nl.name = ln+' Copy';
    for (var a = ol.pageItems.length-1; a >= 0; a--) {
        ol.pageItems[a].duplicate(nl, ElementPlacement.PLACEATBEGINNING);
    the second document is a new document?
    var doc2 =app.documents.add();
    or you can get it by name just like the layer
    or by index
    var doc2 = app,documets[ indexnumber  ];
    then var nl should be:
    var nl = doc2.layers.add();

  • Close Layer Group Folder in Action?

    I am using Photoshop CS4 on Windows 7 64 bit.
    I am creating an action that selects a specifically named layer in a layer group. When this happens it expands the group. However, if I try to close (collapse) the group later on in the action (by clicking the little triangle next to the group) this does not get recorded in the action. I've also tried right-clicking on a group folder and choosing "Close this group" from the pop-up menu but that doesn't get recorded in the action either. I have searched and I cannot seem to find any way to close a layer group via an action. Is this possible?

    The only way I know to close a layer group in an action is to create it  from a selected group of targeted layers. Photoshop menu Layer>New>Group From Layers. This will create a new layer group containing the selected targeted layers and the new group will be closed....

    Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
    Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Group Policy Helper tool not working properly

    Hello,
    I`m using IE 9 on a x64 Win 7 enterprise PC with ZCM 10.3.4.
    When Im logging into ZCC and start to configure a "windows group policy" the group policy helper tool starts and begins to download the policy.
    Then the gpedit.msc appears i get the popup "group policy settings imported successfully" immediately. This popup should certainly come up, when i close the gpedit.msc to import the changed policy setting.
    But so i always get an empty policy for upload.
    Any hints what`s wrong with it?!

    IE 9 is not supported, you need to stay on IE8 until 11.2 is released (15 march).

  • Group Folder -- Permissions Get Lost/Denied

    We have a small LAN with a single group folder on an AFP network mount. The protocol is set to "inherent permissions" and I've promulgated this to the folder at least once. The owner is "admin" and the group is set to the short name of my workgroup. All (including "everyone") have permission to read/write. Every user is in the group. The acl list is empty, and the network mount is set to "use for: user home directories" (the latter because there is no option to select 'use for group folder.'
    The folder is set to mount at login. (Users login at login, tho their homes are local.) All works fine, BUT after a while, the permissions to use the folder and its contents gets lost and the user is denied access.
    A logout usually restores the right to use the folder, but this is driving me/my users crazy. Any aid much appreciated.

    i'm seeing something very similar but not with a group folder. my users are constantly loosing their permissions on files within sharepoints that they should have access to. they have to log out of the server and log back in to restore the correct permissions.
    is anybody else seeing this? it's becoming a huge problem and happens daily now.

  • Group Messaging Help!!

    Ok so I recently got an iPhone 4s and I'm having trouble with the group messaging system. On my old phone (HTC 7 Pro, windows phone) I would keep getting individual messages from people in a group text that I have been added in. The only difference in the message was it always said, NEW MULTIMEDIA MESSAGE whenever someone in the group sent something. I would think that once I got an iPhone these issues would disappear, unfortunatly the didn't.
    On my new iPhone, it got the old group message I was in correct (the one I was added on with my old phone), but once again, whenever someone creates a new group text and adds me to it, I get the seperate messages which say MULTIMEDIA MESSAGE. I can create group messages and have them work as intended but when someone else creates it and adds me to it, I can't do anything.
    This is quite annoying because I can't send anything in the group text at all since it never registers me in the group text. I can only read the messages sent but in the messages folder, it always puts the group message from someone into the single contact message but states NEW MULTIMEDIA MESSAGE.
    Any help would be much appreciated!! FYI I have MMS messaging and group messaging enabled. I have imessage enabled and SMS messaging enabled. I turned off read receipts. Only thing that might hinder my chance at it registering the group message would be that I didn't have group messaging enabled when I was added to the group message but I've later turned it on. Plus one of my family members says that they didn't have group messaging enabled but they still receive them correctly.

    I should mention that the person who created this group chat has an android phone but everyone else in the group chat has an iPhone. Everyone in the group chat says this group messaging works fine but I seem to be the only one with the problem. All I want is for this to work like a normal group chat so I can see all the responses in one group and be able to reply so that all can see.
    If I reply to the individual contact where I got the group message, it automatically converts that to whatever form of messaging needed and only sends that person the text.
