Guest account logout doesn't keep files, apps on dock, How to retain?

Was thinking of setting up access to some apps on my Guest account ,not only for
my guests(wife), however, when I close the Guest account login, it tells me that I will lose all my settings and files that I might have set up. Are there
any settings that I can set up from Administrators point of view, so as when I do switch to Guest login, that these settings/files that are used or saved will actually be there the next time I login to Guest? Thanks
Or do I set up a user account that isn't Guest?

Or do I set up a user account that isn't Guest?
That's the answer, since the whole point of the Guest account is to erase it after use and leave it 'clean' for the next guest. Set up a new user account, but be sure to make it non-admin unless you're sure that anyone using it is safe to be let loose on an admin account. In any event it's always useful to have the odd spare account for testing purposes if you run into trouble.

  • I use Firefox and Windows 7, when I'm using my main account on computer it starts old version of firefox and when I use the guest account it start the new version. Why and how to fix it?

Guy that repairs my computer asked me if i saved new firefox just on guest account, but i didn't, i re-installed it again and again.

Apparently it's related to the Firefox plug in.
This isn't exactly a solution but more of a way to avoid opening PDFs with Firefox's plug in.
    1. Highlight "Tools" from the Menu Bar in the top left of the screen (or click "Options" if using the Firefox Compact Menu)
    2. Select to "Options
    3. Select "Applications"
    4. Look for "Adobe Acrobat Document" under Content Type and to the right under Action select "Use Adobe Reader (default)" instead of the using Adobe Acrobat in Firefox
    5. Open a test PDF. It should open in it's own window now.
Again, not a complete solution but something that'll at least let you scroll with PDFs open.

CS1 is not supported in Leopard if you had it working at some point you were lucky. Adobe does not plan on updating CS as it is an old version. Keep in mind that CS1 is now the last version that can be updated to CS4 now that Adobe has a 3 version update window. At the beginning of March Adobe will start tiered pricing and CS1 and CS2 will cost $200 more that you can upgrade to day. As soon as CS5 is released you will no longer be in the upgrade path and will need to pay full price for the CS5 creative suite.
If you want to continue to use Leopard then it would be best for you to upgrade to CS4. If you will never need to upgrade then it would be best to downgrade your system to Tiger by either restoring from a backup of Tiger you made before your system upgrade or wiping the drive and installing Tiger fresh. You can't Downgrade the Leopard with Tiger as you could with previous systems.

  • Ghost file in the Dock, how to delete?

    Hi!
I recently can see a file in the Download folder in the Dock. I can't see it in the Download folder in Finder. If I try to"catch" it I get a message "The Application can't be found". I find it irritating and would like to delete the file. It is named 4_Kkt409.part, What is a .part file anyway?? Does anyone know?

After some searching on the Internet
I found that the .part file is a partial file from an unsuccessfull download in Firefox. I had a such a week ago. The application Onyx has a cleaning feature for deleting the icon cache from the Dock. It worked. I had to restart and also change the dock settings as I like to have them

Your question is almost too much a personal one, begging the question "do we (husband and wife) feel comfy sharing one account on the Mac"   maybe thats why nobody answered you.
It doesnt complicate anything, but it adds steps for switching accounts on the Mac/ purchases etc. of course
since your question is mostly personal, ..I wont answer THAT part of it, but creating a new account is easy.....messing with switching back and forth is also a personal preference 'issue' as well.   I prefer to keep things simple, but...........you and yours,  I dont know.......

  • Strange behavior with System Preferences involving Guest Account

I work for a company that primarily uses macs and I have recently been asked to enable the Guest Account on all of them (as well as a general staff login). In doing this, I have come across at least one computer (they all run 10.5.5 or 10.5.6) where it seems impossible to enable the Guest Account. Here is what happens:
    1. I open System Preferences, go to the Accounts pane, authenticate, and click on the Guest Account.
    2. I check the option to "Allow guests to log into this computer" and a little busy sign shows for a second.
    3. I click on another account in the list on the left.
    4. When I click back to the Guest Account, the checkbox is unchecked. Also, the Guest Account does not appear in the fast user switch menu.
After tinkering around a little bit, I found that there was a "Guest" home folder in the Users folder. I thought that this was strange because I thought that this folder is created when you actually log into the guest account (I checked on another computer and found that this was indeed the case). I then deleted this "Guest" home folder and emptied the trash.
I again went through the same steps I did above (with a Finder window on the Users folder displayed) and found that when I check the box to enable the Guest Account, a "Guest" home folder appears in the Users folder. I deleted and repeated this process a number of times, all with the same result. I then began looking around for other occurrences of this problem.
At some point, I came across this discussion, which seemed to pose a possible solution: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9176908#9176908
As suggested in that thread, I tried creating a standard user with a home folder by the name of "Guest" or "guest". I filled in all the fields but when I clicked on "Create Account", it seems to work and then goes back to the Accounts preference pane except that the account I just created +*is not there!*+ I then tried this while the "Guest" home folder existed in the Users folder and it brings up a window asking whether I want to use the current "Guest" home folder as the home folder for the new account. Even if I click OK, +*the account still does not appear.*+
Does anyone know what is going on here? The next thing I'll try is an archive and reinstall, but a quicker fix would be nice, since the former involves running all the updates again (we don't have current versions of the Leopard install disks).
I would be very grateful if anyone has an answer.
    -Nik

As it turns out, the Guest folder behavior is actually normal, but I still have not figured out why the guest account still doesn't work. My next step will be to try a disk repair. I've repaired the permissions, but that didn't seem to help as far as I know. I'll also try reinstalling the combo updater to 10.5.6 (as suggested by a co-worker) and see if that does anything. Last resort is the archive and reinstall.

  • Guest account and screensaver

    Hello,
We have some iMacs at a property in a public area (Library). Guest account is setup for use. I'd like to configure a background and screensaver using certain images for the guest account and not have these settings delete/undo upon guest account logout. Is this possible?
    Thanks in advance!

I come from a Windows background, just starting to learn about Macs. There is not a way to edit the default Guest profile (sent background image, screen saver, etc)? Or use scripts at login to make the changes?
Basically need to have the guest account feature of fresh start at each login, but would like to config certain things as default for the guest user. Thx.

  • Customized guest account migration

Yesterday I received my new Mac. I had three users on my old Mac: admin, standard and guest. I had guest user customized with Mac OS X Server Admin Tools, and the other two accounts just created through OS GNU.
I wanted to migrate the standard user only, so I left the admin user on the new Mac as it came out of the box and used Migration Assistant to copy over standard user. I selected the standard user only, unticking admin and guest.
However, in my login screen now my customized guest account appears as well, but I can't log in as every time I click on it, the display shakes just as I was inputting an incorrect password (and of course guest account can't have any pw).
Any idea how can I access again my guest account or how can I delete it and create a new one?

  • Guest accounts - full finder or simple?

    Hi,
I have a mid 2007 aluminium iMac and recently purchased a second-hand early 2008 MacBook Pro.
I have always loved having the Guest account for when my family wants to use my computer giving me piece of mind that they wont be going through my stuff or using applications they shouldn't.
My iMac's guest account was turned on with no real settings changed (nothing in parental controls, etc) and it runs with a limited finder and dock - which is how I want it.
My new MacBook Pro's guest account however runs with a full finder and dock with the exact same settings in system preferences as my iMac.
Can anyone explain the discrepancy? Both are up to 10.5.7 and I'd reinstalled Leopard when I bought the laptop a month or two ago.
    Thanks.

In other people's guest account do you have a full or simple finder running?

  • How to keep saved files on a guest account?

i have backed my sisters iphone up onto my guest account. but now i cannot log onto my own account because it says all saved files will be deleted. is there a way to turn the guest account into an admin account whilst im logged onto it?

    I really doubt it.
How about moving the backup file somewhere safe -- an external hard disk, a flash drive, some cloud storage system -- before logging off?

  • Guest Account Bug Resets User Accounts and Deletes Files on Snow Leopard

    Hi Everyone
Well basically, I hadn't used my Guest Account since upgrading to snow leopard, and I accidentaly clicked it instead of my user account this morning, to find that when I logged into my normal account ALL my files, settings, mail etc had been reset.
So I'm posting this to let people know, (and hopefully Apple if they don't know about this) what's happening.
Here's the post I sent to Apple Feedback:
    Hi,
Well basically, I upgraded to snow leopard recently, everything was working fine, I've upgraded to 10.6.1 and have all the latest software updates etc, so anyway this morning I turned my computer on and accidentaly clicked on the Guest Account on the login screen instead of my normal one, so it started trying to load the guest account (which I hadn't loaded since before the upgrade).
So I wait about two minutes, and nothing atall happens apart from it loading on the logon page, so I pressed Enter to return me to the login window.
So once I was returned I logged on as my normal user, to find my Desktop reset, my Dock reset, my Documents, Music and Photos reset and all my software reset.
So I restarted my computer and logged on again, it was exactly the same, everything gone. At which point I looked in the Users folder to find that my User profile had been removed and replaced with a fresh one with the same name. So I then spent half an hour restoring everything from my Time Machine backup.
I hope Apple are aware of this issue and would greatly appreciate to hear back on the status of what's happening about it, as it doesn't seem to be an isolated issue it's been happening to other people over the last month.
Here's a few posts from other people who've had this problem, and an article on the CNET site MacFixIt about the bug:

To clarify, I have an iMac (aluminium 20" one), with a 2.4ghz processor and 3GB of Ram, please update me on anything that's going on with this issue as I don't want it to continue happening to others who might not have backups,
    Thanks,
    Daniel.
So if anybody else expieriences this issue your not alone, there's a couple of other posts from people who've had problems above in the middle of my feedback letter. Unfortunately in my case it deleted my Home folder and replaced it with a new one, so if this happens to you then your only option is to restore from a backup. You can attempt to use file recovery software if you don't have one, but I haven't tried this and don't know how well it would work.
Hope I've helped clarify things for anybody who this has happened to,
    Daniel.

Maybe it will be usefull but last days I tried to login as *Guest* (because I didn't want to logout as my user). In *system preferences* I allowed guest login, then I fast switched to *Guest Account*, do some changes in profile like mouse movement and so on, then I correctly logged out and logged once more to my account. Now I affraid off rebooting macbook (I always hybernate system with changed default settings which store memory into HDD) until the fix will be released. Probably the data was not removed, because I was logged in as me and */Users/$USER* was still in use. Now I am wondering if I can reboot safelly macbook without losing my data..
For backup do I need to use some command for backuping home to windows machine through *SMB*? because unix like systems have links and so on.. (in *AIX OS* I have to use "*rsync*" command, which copy whole data exactly as it is stored on filesystem - if there is link it will copy only that link, not file which is linked...)

  • Is there any way to recover files from the guest account on a Mac, after the machine has been logged out?

I had uploaded some photos onto iPhoto on the guest account for my visitors, intending to burn them on departure.
I updated my Mac with a system software update, which required reboot so I of course types in the admin username/password to do so.
I received no warning message "caution: all temporary files in guest account will be deleted if you logout" as if you logout directly from the guest account, so I had forgotten about the guest account wipe.
Just today I switched to the guest user, and was dismayed to find the files gone.
Surely there must be some way to recover these files? Can anyone help?!
    Thanks
    Alan

They possibly still exist on the hard drive if you haven't overwritten that space already.
Your only hope is to try a file recovery program like Data Rescue 3 or some sort like that.
(note: the product linked to is an example of the suggested kind of software that may help you; it is not in any way my recommendation or endorsement of the product. I haven't used this product and can't comment on its effectiveness).
