Handoff does not work on a 2 1/2 year old MacBook Air

As I do a lots of fieldwork I was looking forward to using the new handoff feature in Yosemite which would allow me to transfer my work from my iPad to my 2 1/2 year old MacBook Air. I have now discovered that my laptop is too old for this feature. Why? This smacks of built-in obsolescence.

This is a user-to-user support forum, so we can't usually explain the "why" of many Apple decisions, although you may get some educated guesses from someone here. You can provide feedback to Apples at https://www.apple.com/feedback/ if you like.
May not help, but my MacBook Air is a mid-2012 model that is supposed to support Handoff but I've yet to get it to work in spite of meticulously following all of the instructions.
Also may not help, but I don't really care if I don't get it to work as all it would seem to do is very slightly reduce the number of steps to open a document on the other device. Without Handoff I can start a document in Pages on my MacBook Air, save to iCloud then go to my iPhone and open Pages and resume editing there. You may already be aware of that -- and you may have more need or use of Handoff than I do -- but thought I would point that out just in case you were thinking Handoff provided more capabilities than it does.

  • Bluetooth pairing and so handoff does not work

    Hi!
First of all I have a Macbook Pro 15" Retina late 2013 (bought at in the first months of 2014) and and iPhone 5s.
rMBP has installed OS X Yosemite since yesterday and my iPhone iOS 8.0.2
    Positiv checks:
    - both devices support Bluetooth LE
    - both devices are on the same wi-fi network
    - rMBP support handoff and instant hotspot as displayed in system information screen
    - rMBP could "out call" over facetime and my iPhone to anyone
    - bluetooth is activated on both devices
    - airdrop (for everyone) is activated on both devices
    - handoff in settings -> general on rMBP ist actived
    - handoff in settings -> generall -> handoff & ... ist activated on iPhone too
    Problems:
    - handoff does not work between my rMBP and iPhone
    - in bluetooth settings both devices see each other, but they cannot connect to each other
if I try to connect bluetooth from rMBP to iPhone I get: network not available
if I try to connect bluetooth from iPhone to rMBP I get: connections failed
so what can I do to pair/connect them both to each other for these incredible handoff features I want to use?
    things I tried out:
    - switching airdrop on and off on both devices
    - switching airdrop off and on on both devices
    - switching bluetooth off and on on both devices
    - clearing bluetooth device cach on rMBP and fresh select (pairing) in the settings
    - multiple trys on my iPhone to connect with my rMBP
    - resetting network settings on iPhone
    - resetting all settings on iPhone
I run out of ideas .... can anybody help me please!

yes, there is an additional troubleshooting for your iPhone.
    - be sure that you have still OS X Yosemite and iOS 8.0.2 or later (8.1 on Monday) installed on your devices
    - on iOS goto settings -> generall -> scroll down to reset settings (last option on general screen) -> reset all network settings
    - be sure to reconnect to the same WI-FI after you did that
    - be sure to activate Bluetooth
    - be sure that Handoff ist activated on your iPhone (Settings -> General -> Handoff)
    - be sure your MBP ist on the same WI-FI (same bandwith as well, for example both devices have to be on 2,4 GHz)
if that troubleshooting does not work for you, goto settings -> iCloud -> scroll down to logout from your iCloud on iOS
and than reconnect to iCloud on your iPhone 5c
if that troubleshooting does not work too, goto settings -> general -> scroll down to reset settings
and reset all settings, do the same as before
you can also check on your MBP:
    - goto Macintosh HD/library/Preferences/By Host and check for files com.apple.Bluetooth......
    - delete them
    - do not forget to activate Bluetooth on MBP
if you did the two boot-tricks in the troubleshooting, Bluetooth should be reseted to default, and if you open Settings -> Bluetooth on your MBP
your iPhone should NOT be shown in the list of available Bluetooth devices.
please tell me, what works for you!

  • Handoff does not work after phone replacement.

    Dear all,
I'm using iPhone 6 and Macbook Pro Retina 2014 mid and getting some trouble with using continuity on Yosemite.
Before I use iPhone 5s 16G(IOS 8.1.1)when it was not thrown to the water , continuity does work so well.  But after that, replacing it for iPhone 6, it does not.
I think it could be happen since my previous iPhone 5s cannot be logout from iCloud but i don't know why exactly.
so could you give me some advice for fixing it?
    I'm currently using iPhone 6 (64G)with IOS 8.1.1 (12B436) and Macbook Pro Retina 15" with OS X Yosemite 10.10.1(14B25)
and I also tried to solve this problem with logout/in from iCloud and handoff off/on, rebooting both devices but failed.
The only working function of the continuity is SMS sync.
Could you please help me solve this problem?

I thought I'd post you a quick response because you described exactly the issues I was having. After my phone was idle for a while, my iPhone would refuse to get data over 3G.
I've tested this thoroughly and I'm able to "trip up" the phone into a state where it can't download data from the 3G network. But turning airline mode on for about 30 seconds then off again resets forces a renegotiate with the cell tower/3g and everything seems to work again about a minute later.
Nothing untoward listed in the console at this point either - The PDP context that you mentioned that was deactivated was more than likely the Internet Tethering. (It's usually PDP context 1, by the looks of things).
I think I might switch off 3G and see if that helps until Apple fix this issue. It is related to the wifi issues that others have reported - As I've seen my iPhone unable to download information via 3G if wifi is turned on, but you don't connect to a wifi network. But I can't seem to reproduce this reliably.

  • Hi, my Macbook says its connected to the internet, but it's not working.  It's about 2 years old and has been fine up until now.  Its the same internet provider and I have a work PC laptop that is connecting fine.  Any help greatly appreciated.  Liz

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro won't connect to the internet, although it says it is connected.  The laptop is about 2 years old and up until now has worked fine.  My work PC laptop is connecting to the internet fine so I know it can't be the connection.   I've checked for Adware/Malware (just in case) via safemac and that all seems fine.
    I'm running OSX 10.8.5.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks

Believe it or not, that article helped me find a temporary solution. After reading it I realized that the problem did have to do with my DNS settings. I had taken the DNS settings that my ISP gives me when I dial up and plugged them into the configuration for my AirPort card. This apparently caused a problem because, although my wireless network is always on, it's not always connected to the internet. So those DNS settings were invalid most of the time.
I found that as long as I leave the area for DNS servers blank, the computer logs in normally. This further confirms my suspicion that something was trying to access the internet at login. I guess as long as I don't specify any DNS servers, the computer realizes it doesn't have an internet connection through my AirPort card.
So I just created two network locations: one for when my network is connected to the internet and one for when it isn't. In the first, I kept my original DNS settings because they work as long as I have an internet connection. In the second I did not specify any DNS servers. This seems to work fine, but I'd still like to know what is trying to access the internet at login. I've disabled the automatic update feature in all my programs that have it, but that doesn't seem to help the slowdown at login. Does anyone know how I could figure out what program is trying to access the internet?

  • TS3274 iPad iOS 7.0.2 does not Trust to iTunes [11.1.1(11)] on MacBook Air 10.8.5 to iPad iOS 7.0.2

When trying to link iTunes [11.1.1(11)] on MacBook Air 10.8.5 to iPad iOS 7.0.2, even when I choose TRUST fails to connect indicating that my computer does not have permission. Even I choose TRUST, i end up with "iTunes could not connect to this iPad. You do not have permission." This is a new MacBook Air and i have recently migrated from MacBook Pro. It seems that there is a solution for this on PC but I am failing to find a thread on my specific problem. I can access to my photos and the iPad does charge. So the problem appears to be one of iTunes. I tried all the basic fixes of turning on/off both devices. I also used Disk Repair Utility to verify and repair permission—to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your reply :-),
I think I read the instructions carefully and understood that this upgrade applies only to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and up. I only have Lepord 10.5.8 on a MacBook Intel Duo Core.
Can I do this upgarde as well?

  • IMac does not see my external HD...but my MacBook Air does

I have a Toshiba 1TB HD that I partitioned into iMac and PC.  I run my backup on it with no problems.  Then I got a Time Capsule and set it up.  Now my iMac does not see my HD any more. But my Mac Book Air picks it up. You can see the 2 partitions on the MBA.  I also cant see it in my Disk Utilities and "Mount" is not clickable. I tried to use different USB ports as well as different USB cables.

What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device...
If the issue persists, try these steps:
       1. Shut down the computer.
       2. Disconnect all devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).
       3. Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.
       4. Plug the computer back in and turn it on.
       5. Reconnect the device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each port if you have more than one.

  • FaceTime and Messages stopped working on my MacBook after I updated to Yosemite. Handoff does not work either. How can I fix this?

Before I updated to Yosemite, I could FaceTime other people and Message other people with the MacBook Pro apps. However, after I updated to Yosemite, they stopped working. I get "not delivered" feedback on Messages, and "call failed" on FaceTime. I made sure that both have the correct emails checked and unchecked in the settings as my iPod, and made sure that the "make calls from" or "begin new conversations from" coincide with my handheld Apple media player.
Am I not doing something? Am I doing something wrong?
    Any feedback would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • HT6337 HandOff feature does NOT work

HandOff feature does NOT work on my iPhone6 and iPad Air.
I have the latest updates (iOS 8.1) installed and my MBP is on Yosemite 10.10...
I have my iPad Air, iPhone6, and MBP on the same network.
    And, I have bluetooth enabled.
Yet, I don't see the handOff icon appear on any of my mobile devices...
    Am I missing something??
Does setting a password on all my devices affect this feature?

    Hello LoreZyra,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To get Handoff working between your devices, please take a look at the article below for settings needed to be configured on your devices.
    Check your settings
Check the following settings on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:
Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and turn on Wi-Fi if necessary.
Make sure your iOS devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network by going to Settings > Wi-Fi and comparing the name of the network each is on.
Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn on Bluetooth if necessary.
Go to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps and make sure Handoff is on.
Go to Settings > Phone. If you seeWi-Fi Calling, turn it off.
Check the following settings on your Mac:
Go to the Wi-Fi icon at the top of your screen and turn on Wi-Fi if necessary.
Make sure your Mac and iOS devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi on your iOS device and compare the name of the network with the Wi-Fi network on your Mac.
Go to the Bluetooth icon at the top of your screen and turn on Bluetooth if necessary.
In System Preferences > General, select “Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.” If you don't see this setting, your Mac may not support Handoff.
Open the FaceTime app, go to FaceTime > Preferences and turn on “iPhone Cellular Calls.”
Go to System Preferences, and sign out and then sign in again to your iCloud account.
Get help using Continuity with iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite
    Take care,
    Alex H.

  • Continuity calling works but Handoff does not.

I got continuity calling to work by doing the on & off tricks with my iPhone 6 and iPad 4, but Handoff still does not work.

    Hi.
Continuity works one way here: I can continue on my Mac, but not vice versa, Also cellular calling worked that way: receive on Mac works but no outgoing calls. I managed to get the latter work by switching a setting in FaceTime preferences, but continuity discontinues to work both ways.
