Hard disk not detected - powerpc mini

I bought my powerpc mini back in 2005 and had no problems until recently. One night my (less than year old) apple keyboard started typing plus signs repeatedly when I wasn't touching it, and the mouse stopped responding. I dragged out an older apple keyboard which had a couple of defective keys but was working ok, and the mouse worked again as well when I hooked it up to this keyboard.
Today I bought a brand new apple keyboard (the aluminum one) but when I connected it to the mini, neither the keyboard nor the mouse were detected. I tried using a 7-port USB hub whose ports light up when they're active - all lights were on, even on ports that had nothing hooked up. Keyboard and mouse were still not responding, so I was forced to hard boot the mac with the power button.
When it booted back up, it only got to the dreaded flashing question mark. I tried again several times, same thing. I put in my OSX install disk 1 to see if I could run Disk First Aid. I got that open but it doesn't even see the HDD. It sees it on the left margin of the Disk First Aid menu but the options to Repair Disk etc are grayed out. I tried rebooting and running the extended Hardware test, this said everything was fine, including the hard disk. Finally I tried reinstalling OSX but when it asks for a destination disk, there's no disk listed - so, again it's not even recognizing the hard disk.
Where do I go from here? This system is no longer under warranty. Is it garbage now, or should I take it to a repair shop to get the hard disk replaced? Or is the system board the cause? Based on my experience supporting Windoze PC's I'd have to guess that the system board is pooched...
One more question: I bought an extra gig stick of RAM for this machine a year ago, can it be used on a newer mac if this one is toast and I have to buy a newer one, say an imac?

Try running fsck.
1. Reboot/Startup holding your Command-S key down.
2. At the command line type the following and hit 'Return.'
/sbin/fsck -fy
3. If it finds a problem and repairs it, immediately run fsck again until the drive checks OK.
4. After it has check/repaired your disk, type 'reboot' and hit 'Return' again. Unit should bootup normally.
Also, your RAM will not work in a new iMac. It's to slow.

Just to be sure, go to bios and set everything to default. Save and exit. See if you can now see the hdd in the bios.

  • Hard disk not detected during booting or also it does not show in boot menu.

hard disk not detected during booting or also it does not show in boot menu please tell

you may have a failed hard drive or bad cables, i would check first to see if the hard drive is powering on. if it doesn't try a different power connection, and if it still doesn't start spinning i would say that it is bad and get a new hard drive. If
it does start spinning and just isn't being recognized, try a different sata port if you have the option or a different sata cable all together.

  • Hard disk not detected once, but now working?

    Hi,
I'm Zak, a bit of techie when it comes to playing with software, or re-assembling computers and whatnot. Unfortunately I've got no clue about some other things.
A bit of quick history on my notebook: The fan has been making terrible noises the last few weeks. Initially I thought it was some dust so I got some duster. A lot of dust came out, so that can only be good, but the noises came back after a few days. After some searching I figured the other logical explanation was probably the hard drive going bad. I'm hesitant to send it back to HP because I use it for all my university work and it would really set me back a few weeks to not have it.
So, a few days ago, I booted up my notebook to a "hard drive not detected" - or very similar - message. There were a few options, for f1-f4, they were system information, and 3 different tests (I think). I ran the tests, each one came back fine, noting that there was no OS installed, or hard disk to boot from. I rebooted because I hadn't quite seen it boot up, and wanted to see if there were any other options. Turns out, it started up fine. I restarted once more and again, it did fine.
Next, I scrambled around, backing up all my data, getting together warranty info, installing the HP Support Assistant, etc. I ran all the tests from the Support Assistant and there were no problems detected. Since then I've just been hibernating the notebook when I stop using it, and I haven't encountered any unusual trouble. It all seems fine, but my warranty expires Dec 7th of this year. Is it safe for me to assume the "hard drive not detected" error was just a single misfire? I've read a lot of threads and FAQs on it and it doesn't sound like something that just happens once and goes away. On the other hand, I've never had to use a warranty so am unsure quite how the process works, and like I said, sending it anywhere would put me back in my work.
For the sake of a full post, I have an HP G62-367DX Notebook, running on Windows 7 64-bit OS, and as far as I know there were no changes made between the error and my prior boot. If there's any other information I can provide, just let me know.
Cheers, thank you very much for any assistance, and good day

The tests from the Assistant are not as comprehensive or reliable as the full hard drive test in the BIOS....tap F10 as you power up, go in there and find the hard drive test. Run the long form test and see what is says. It is not unusual for hard drive issues to start as intermittent and gradually get more frequent. If your drive passes the long form test you can fairly safely assume it was a one-time gremlin of some sort, but it is still a real good idea to back up. I like the idea of the online backup services and I will name Carbonite only because it is well known and not as an endorsement. There are several more and an external drive is also a good idea.
You cannot put off a reboot forever; you are going to have to confront the issue at some point.

  • Why is my hard disk not detected in my macbook, but detected in others

I'm using the Macbook 13" Retina Display with OS Mavericks
about a few days ago, when i inserted my PQI H568V my mac gave statement "the disc you inserted was not readable by this computer"
then i choose the ignore button(if i'm not mistaken).
Then the next day, when i wanted to check for my files, my macbook cannot recognise the hard drive.
But when i plug it in into other mac, it can be recognised and the data is all still there.
    please help me! thanks

Yes, I have done the backup.
Macbook Pro Retina 13 inch, Late 2013
    OS X 10.9.5
Not only in other mac, but i've tried to mount it in other laptops, it's also being detected. However it isn't detected in my macbook only.
After I chose the ignore button, I didn't do anything, but I only shut down my mac and then unplugged the hard disk.
After a few days, i notice this from my disk utility
That's what shown on my Log at Disk Utility.
    What should I do now?

  • External hard disk not detecting

Hi, I am using WD 1 TB external hard disk and it was going all good till now one day my friend asked for my hard disk as he need to back up some data and connected it to PC. Now I am trying to connect it to mac but mac is not detecting.
My hard disk has all my softwares and other important data.
    Need help ASAP

repair disk just checks for errors
likely its a PC formatted HD, thats why you cant read it
Formatting ERASES a HD, so dont do that to the other persons HD.
check what the format of it is.  If its NTFS youd need an APP like Paragon to read / write to it.

  • MSI B85M-G43 can't install Windows 7. Hard disk not detected.

    Hi,
I just built a new computer for the first time.  I followed the instructions and did everything correctly. but am unable to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. Hard disk isn't always detected during the installation.
But when it appeared in the "Where do you want to install Windows" list along with system, I tried to format the hard disk and got a message "Failed to format the select partition. [Error 0x80070057]."
Then I restarted the computer, the hard disk no longer displayed in the list, so I put motherboard driver disc and clicked on Load Driver and opened Storage\Intel\PCH_12.0\f6flpy-x64. It loaded, then I got a message saying "To continue installation, use the Load Driver option to install 32-bit and signed 64-bit drivers. Installing an unsigned 64-bit device driver is not supported and might result in an unusable Windows installation."
I restarted again and disabled Driver Signature Enforcement, but it didn't help. I still got the same message.
In the computer case I have these devices:
    - MSI B85M-G43, Socket-1150
    - Intel Core i5-4430 Processor
    - Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 8GB
    - MSI GeForce GTX 650Ti BOOST 1GB
    - Cooler Master GX 550W PSU
    - WD Desktop Green 1TB
    - SuperMulti 16X DVD(+/-)R/RW 12X RAM (+/-)R DL LightScribe SATA drive
Everything is plugged in correctly. Hard disk connector plugged in SATA 1 and DVD -> SATA 2.
The installation is pretty slow, regardless if i install it via USB or x16 DVD. All except DVD and hard disk are disabled. It's also worth to mention that even DVD and USB aren't always detected in the click BIOS.
So I'm wondering if anyone here can help me? Thanks

    Hi and
1: What BIOS version you have? .. Have you tryed to downgrade/upgrade it already?
2: Have you tryed it in those SATA 2 ports? ...is it same strory?
    - On SATA there aint any master or Slave like on IDE so if you are under same controller it dosent mutter what port you use on what device.
Note: SATA 3 Ports are faster then SATA2 ports, but even SATA 1 can handel your DVD or HDD. So no lose if you need to use SATA 2 ports.
Hope this get you foward! Cheers Mummy

  • NEED HELP, old hard disk failed, new hard disk not detected.

My hard disk died, not working, not detected when I restart with the MacOS X DVD and attempt to reinstall.
I have bought a new hard drive, 160 GB ATA - IDE Samsung drive, and carefully replaced it following service manual instructions. All connectors have been carfully but firmly reconnected, and the new hard disk is not detected.
What can i do?? where is the problem??
Thank you very much for your help.

Do you know that the new hard drive is working? As it's new chances are it is, just asking .... do you know it's powering up? If you replug the old not working hard drive in, is it recognized? (this is where you don't put the computer back together, but just replace the hard drive and sort of close it back up, but don't use any bolts close the case). Plus you can feel or clearly hear if the drive is starting up or not.

  • New hard disk not detected on openboot

    hello guys,
would like to request help if there are any settings i need to enable for a netra t1 to detect the new hard disks that were added on a dell disk array. the netra t1 is able to detect scsi hds 1-3 but not the 8-11. have checked netra t1 manual and it says that it supports both narrow and wide scsi. probe scsi only shows the following disks:
    /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2
    Target 0
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318404LSUN18G 8590
    Target 1
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
    Target 2
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
    Target 3
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
the new disks are of the same model. any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
the netra t1 is able to detect scsi hds 1-3 but not the 8-11.
    /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2
    Target 0
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318404LSUN18G 8590
    Target 1
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
    Target 2
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
    Target 3
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
This is an incomplete output of probe-scsi. Which of these disks are internal (maybe only ID 0?) ?
Set auto-boot? to FALSE at the ok-prompt. Temporarily insert one of the new disks in the slot of one of the detected disks (e.g. ID3). Is the disk now detected at the OBP ? If it is, there is something wrong with the external chassis.
I assumed that this is a Netra T1 AC200/DC200 with only a single channel SCSI controller.

  • [Solved] Hard Disk not detected

Currently i am using 4 hard drives and out of which 2 hard drives are detected and 2 are not. The fasinating thing is that in BIOS all the 4 hard drivers are detected and using a live cd i can access all the 4 drives without any prob. All the 4 drivers are working properly in windows7. It's just in arch linux 2 of my drives are not detected.
Recently i have upgraded my system from kernel 3.6.9 to 3.6.10
the drives are SATA drives. they are connected directly to the motheboard using SATA cables. the live cd i used was Ubuntu. I checked in /sys/block/  and with lsblk. In both of them i can see 2 drives sda and sdb.
Even check the dmesg, but there was nothing related to sdc or sdd. even on boot there were no errors.
They are NTFS formatted and always the 2 same disks are detected.
pls guide me as i am really freaked off due to this prob.

How about rebooting, and then posting the output of dmesg.  It will be long, so be sure to use BBCode 'code' tags.  Alternately, install wgetpaste; pipe the output of dmesg through wgetpaste, and post the link wgetpaste provides here.
Edit:  Never mind   I see you updated with solved while I was posting.  But what is the solution?
Thanks ewaller for the reply The prob was that, the capacity of my SMPS ( power unit ) was not sufficient to run 4 HDD + printer + 2 TB external drive. So this was the main reason. When i disconnected the printer and the external drive again all the 4 HDD were detected in my arch machine

  • New hard disk not detected when plugged into SUN FIRE X4150

    Hi
We have a server currently set up as RAID-1. There's a need to have additional space for operational needs so an additional 300GB hard disk was acquired and need not be in RAID-1 setup. It was plugged into the server and the server seems to hang i.e. remote sessions terminated, cannot be ping.
Server was powered down, and after removing the hard disk, powered up. Everything is ok again.
We then powered down the server, plugged in the hard disk, and powered it up. Server boot up into the OS ok but the new hard disk did not get detected.
    My questions are:-
    1. Is it possible to add a 3rd hard disk in a RAID-1 server?
    2. If yes, what are we doing wrong or missed?
    3. If it not possible, does it mean in a RAID-1 setup, any additional hard disk to be added MUST also be RAID-1 configured?

    Hi.
This server can be ordered with LSI RAID controller or with Adaptec RAID controller.
They are required different steps for configure disks.
Adaptec RAID controller require first create volume at BIOS level RAID configuration menu.

  • Hard disk not detected by bios

Hi, I have a CQ50-107NR and when press the power button the hard drive light indicator is flashing, but the bios or windows does not detect the hard disk, I have tried several hard disk that work in my other computers, I have been reparing pcs for more than 15 years and am very stumped by this problem. In my experience if the hard drive indicator is blinking that indicates that the laptop has detected it. But for this one not to detect it is confussing. I am repaing the laptop for someone, had to fix a problem with it over heating. If anyone has any ideas on this or had a similar problem please let me know.

It is not that uncommon on that series of laptops with AMD processor and nVidia GeForce graphics. The laptop is a close cousin of the dv6000 series which had a lot of issues back in the 2008 time frame. The chips on the motherboard will not keep a complete connection due to manufacturing flaws and it shows up as disappearing peripherals or dead video. Wireless cards, hard drives, optical drives all can stop working. The only fix is a motherboard repair or replacement.

  • Hard disk not detected- HP630 laptop

my HP630 just froze and comes up with one message, HDD not detected. I want to save all photos (data ) on the laptop if possible, so dont want to re-install Windows from CD booting without having an experts advice. if i conduct any tests (such as testing what is wrong with the hard disk or the state of he hard disc) the test freezes midway.Tried booting through USB, but the BIOS does not have that option. Please can anyone help? Many thanks.
if any more information is needed please let me know

    Hi,
I would suggest removing the HDD from the notebook, place it in an external caddy - an example is on the link below - connect this to another PC and see if you can access and back-up your files.
    External HDD Caddy 2.5".

  • WAAS - WAE-512-K9 - SATA2 250 GB Hard disk not detecting

We had installed new WAE-512-K9 having 2*SATA2 250GB Hard disk as edge box in one of the branch. But during configuration, we have notified that both the hard disks are not getting detected. Both the disks 00 & 01 are inserted in the respective slots as mentioned in the cisco document. Hard disk LEDs are glowing intially when the device boots up, but later there is no LED indication. Please help me in resolving this issue.

    Hi Tammy,
The only thing you need is - disk delete-data-partitions once the unit reboots after the memory upgrade. This command re-aligns the CIFS and DRE partition to match with 8GB memory. This command should retain the software and config on the device, only repartition the caching partitions. Not sure what may have went wrong but it seems like at this moment you may want to re-install image using copy ftp install command on WAE. Other than that, your disks look helthy.
    Regards.
