Hard drive crashed. how do I transfer from iphone 3gs to itunes on new computer?

My hard drive crashed.  I installed iTunes on my new computer.  How do I transfer my information on iphone 3gs onto the new iTunes?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone.  Without syncing :  File>Transfer Purchases   Authorize your computer for your itunes account first.
If you sync to a blank computer, then your contacts and calendars will be erased as well.  Another reason to always maintain a backup.
Enter one unique contact and calendar entry on the new computer.  When you first sync you should get the option to merge the data.

Right click on your device in the device list and choose "transfer purchses" to copy all music bought in iTunes to your new iTunes library.
For all other media you'll have to use 3rd party software, examples are mentioned in this thread:

  • Hard drive crash - How to restore data from my iPod?

    Hi there,
I had to replace the hard disk and in my daughter's PC and now need to get the songs back from her iTouch to her computer. As you can imagine, I had no backup prior to this hard drive crash... Now how can I get the songs and applications from the iTouch back in the PC? I have authorized iTunes using the same account but it does not allow me to do any tranfer from the Itouch to the PC.
Please help... I don;t want to loose everything we have purchase and installed on the iTouch...
    Thanks,
    Christian Dubuc

That post of mine linked to above is quite an old one and isn't meant to specifically address an iPod Touch. You might want this more up to date information.
If your iPod is set to sync automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Alternatively open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
If at any point you get a message that your iPod is linked to another library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
Purchased applications can be downloaded over again, see this article for details: How to redownload purchased applications from the App Store
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod Touch or iPhone. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer data (such as playcounts and ratings), movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well.

Meanwhile my ipod has all my music and podcasts up till a month ago.  What will I lose if I put my external drive music back on?

    Hi Perilman,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that all of your iTunes media is on an external hard drive and you would like to move that media onto your new Windows computer hard drive. The following article has step by step instructions for this specifically. Part 5 in the External drive section is probably what is going to be most relevant to you.

  • Hard drive crashed.  Want to restore from iPhone

A virus crashed my hard drive yesterday. I want to restore my library on my laptop from the music and videos on my iPhone 3G. If I download iTunes and then tell it to sync, will it upload my media on the iPhone, or will iTunes erase everything on my iPhone?

Itunes will erase everything on your iphone. The iphone is not a back up device.
The music sync is one way - computer to iphone, with the exception of itunes purchased music.
Without syncing connect iphone and click File>Transfer Purchases in itunes.
Where is your back up copy of your music? Why not just use that to put your music back on your computer?

  • How do I transfer music from iPhone 4S to iTunes on new computer?

My computer crashed and I had to reinstall iTunes, when that happened, I lost all my music that was stored on my computer. It is still available on my phone. How do I transfer the music from my iPhone to the newly installed iTunes? Please give step by step instructions, I don't want to risk losing my music completely. THANKS!

You cannot do that.  All you can transfer is the music you purchased in iTunes.  To do that, plug your iPhone into iTunes, and choose File > Device > Transfer Purchases from the iTunes menu.
The rest of your music will have to come either from your old computer's backup or the original sources (e.g., CDs) that were used to supply iTunes on the old machine.

  • How do I transfer my iPhone contact info to a new computer?

I bought an iPhone the first day they came out over a year ago online, but when it arrived by mail I found I couldn't sync it with my laptop computer because I was running 10.3.9, which didn't support iPhone. In order to activate my iPhone I had to go to a friend's house & use his computer, & I've been using it ever since to update my phone. Well, I finally bought a new computer & it's running MAC OSX 10.5.3, which is able to support my iPhone, so I don't have to use his computer anymore. How can I sync my iPhone with my new computer without losing my contacts? I don't care about my pictures, music, or videos, I just DON'T want to lose my contacts & email addresses, is there a way to transfer them from one computer to another? Somebody help me please

    Download Phoneview from http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/
Attach your iPhone, click on Contacts on the left, select a contact then select all and choose "Copy from" on the top and it will save all your contacts, complete, to a .vcf file, save it as contacts.vcf - or whatever.
When done you can double click the file and it will launch address book and give you the option to import and/or update. You can then sync with address book and your iPhone will be up-to-date :0)
I create a new list each time I add contacts etc just in case

  • How do I transfer from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 2G?

Trying to reactivate my old iPhone 2G because my 3GS has stopped working and is non responsive. All I can find is discussions from people trying to go from 2G to 3G or 3GS. I really need my cell phone working asap and I can't get this 2G to activate with my phone number (so I can make/receive calls, texts, etc.) I'm trying to save my self a trip into the apple store, but it's looking more and more like I'm going to have to go in there regardless.
I've tried to just plug it in and sync like I usually do, but it just updates it as a iPod touch basically. What do I need to do to get my old phone to recognize my phone number? What am I doing wrong?
I also just updated the 2G to 3.01, does that have anything to do with this? ARGH! I'm so frustrated! Please, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you transfer the sim card from the non-working 3GS to the 2G? Then do a restore.

  • How to play songs from iPhone 3G in iTunes on the Computer

    Hello
Maybe my question is some bit silly but I am also more than perplex at this moment. For storage reasons all my iTunes song files (no purchased songs from iTunes store, but all CD imported) are stored on a server volume.
Syncing my iPhone 3G together on my PowerBook with iTunes works well but ... when I am on travel I would like to play (only to play, not to transfer!) the synced songs from my iPhone on my connected PowerBook on iTunes in order to stream the music to an Apple Airport Express Adapter. I can see the songs greyed out on my iPhone but I can not play them.
Is there something wrong in my iTunes configuration or does I have missed an important "concept"? Do I really need to carry with me my iPhone together with an external HD drive where all songs files are stored on it? In this "application" case the iPod functionality of my iPhone 3G would be really useless. I can belief that.
Thanks for any advice, best regards
    André

    Hello
Thank you for your response. I would like to play the songs on my iPhone on the very same computer, account and iTunes Library I synced my iPhone with. Although there is no play access to the songs on my iPhone from iTunes. I thought I could take them with me and play the songs on my iPhone to the very same computer I synced it with. It Seems not to work as concept? So I think I have to buy a "stupid" docking station to make it complicate.
    Thank you, André

  • How to play music from iphone over my itunes on my computer?

I have a lot of music on my iphone that I want to listen to at work. I have itunes on my work computer but cannot load that music to the computer itself. Is there a way to listen to the music on my iphone through itunes?

    No, there is not.
Use a bluetooth speaker or speakers that connect to the headphone jack on the iPhone.

If you have the media on an iDevice then you should be able to get most of your non-iTunes purchases back as well. See this post from forum regular Zevoneer for options.
