Hard drive is a little noisy

My hard drive is pretty noisy when it accesses information, opening a folder, launches an application, etc. Louder than my G5. Anyone else had this?

You can imagine my surprise when I tried to find a place to put my airport extreme card into my Mac Pro, there was no place for it to go. You can however buy a PCI Wireless card and install it in your mac and you should be good to go.

I want to know if I can backup my Ipad to an external harddrive. I have a pc with xp pro media edition and a partitioned hard drive with very little space on C and lots on D. I am trying to update my Ipad to 5.1.1 and it says it needs 12 gb to backup.

I have a Sony Vaio desktop PC with a partitioned hard drive, running Windows XP Pro. There is 13 gb on C drive with the OS, and 140 gb left on D drive. I am trying to update my Original Ipad from 4.3.4 to 5.1.1 and because C drive is full ( I have moved everything that can be moved to D drive) mostly from Microsoft updates over the years, I am unable to do the backup Itunes is telling me I have to do to update or lose all media on this iPad. 12.67 gb is required to do the backup and I have a whopping 965.2 MB. I can not get the cloud to use as backup as it requires 5.0 or better. Does anyone know if I can back up to D drive, and if so how? Also, I have a 1 terrabyte WD mini external hard drive I just got as a gift...could I do the backup to it and, again, if so, how? Please explain from start to finish, as my brain is now fried from, first from finally getting Itunes updated to 10.6 ,and now trying to do this update. Thanks to anyone for their help!!

12" powerbook hard drive weirdness. Little help?

I'm usually pretty good at diagnosing stuff like this, but this one's got me stumped.
Every once in awhile, my powerbook refuses to write to the hard drive. It'll read from the disk just fine (opening documents works) but attempting to save them brings up a dialogue box like "Couldn't Save foo.txt to folder Documents." A restart generally fixes it right up, at least for awhile, before it goes all whacky again. I'm not sure if this is a hardware problem (loose drive ribbon, maybe?) or something weird with my permissions (though verifying them doesn't help).
Anyone ever seen anything like this before? Any advice'd be appreciated.

did you tried to boot from the "first aid" cd (hope you know it) then go to the "disk utilities" and repair your hd. it's quite difference. if it's still not work. please go to check your disk info and see how much space left of your hd. i guest your model may have 40gb or 60gb, but whatever, if there is some space you lost (as like as the total available space is low but your used space is not as high as your hd's total capaciy.) it may be having some bad sectors or clusters damage on your hd.

MacBook hard drive noisy in Windows XP

Hello, I just installed Windows XP on my new MacBook. I only did this so I could run borlandc for school. Whenever I'm working on it in XP, the hard drive starts to get noisy like when I'm working with videos or doing heavy duty stuff in Mac OS X. The only things open right now are IE and borlandc++.
What's the problem?

Noisy Hard Drive

I have the newest PB G4 12" and once in a while my hard drive spins so loud I can hear it from across the room. It tends to happen when I move the computer while it is on and the screen is open. When it spins that loudly, the computer freezes with the color wheel and then when it "calms" down the color wheel goes away. This is the second hard drive for this PB already. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks

You really shouldn't move the computer around while it is awake and the hard drive is spinning. Think of your hard drive as a little record player. If you were to carry a record player accross the room while it was spinning you'd expect it to skip... same idea pretty much.
Are those noises of the metal-on-metal grinding variety? As with all suspect hard drives you should backup your data. This cannot be overstated.
I dunno what it is but I've replaced more hard drives in 12" powerbooks than any other model...

Safari makes hard drive noisy

Is this normal? Every time I launch Safari my hard drive starts to be noisy. It's this usual hard drive clicking but it's really fast and noisy clicking. What's worse that it takes few minutes. It's really annoying in quiet room. It looks like hard drive try to read some data for using Safari. I cleaned everything I can using MainMenu app - cache, history, temporary files. Nothing happened. I use MBP 2,2GHz, 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD - late 2007.

Hi, sorry for late response. Yes, it still does the weird ticking noises. I tried to reinstall operating system and not just Safari and it still does that. I was talking to my colleagues (they're hard drive specialists) and first time they told me that my HDD is going to crash any day soon. Then I told them that the HDD is doing it for several months. They were confused. They told me cause of this noises is that HDD is writing and reading from multiple sectors of the disk.
So, my HDD still does it and I got used to it. What about yours HDD?

If you need to carry large files (e.g., larger than about 4GB) back and forth, you may need ExFAT. Otherwise MS-DOS works for smaller files.
The Mac can Read, but not write Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) without an add-on program such as Paragon NTFS.

Go to Settings>Preferences>Advanced and make sure that the location of your media library is correct.

Old MacBook Pro slow and hangs frequently, hard drive problems?

I have an old Macbook Pro (one of the originals, from about 4 1/2 years ago). Recently I've been noticing that it runs really slow, especially when its been running for a while and there are multiple programs open. It will take a long time to switch between windows, opening a tab in Safari will usually cause a spinning beach ball for 10-15 seconds and Safari crashes frequently. Other programs have similar problems, but don't normally crash. It's running Snow Leopard and has 1GB of RAM. Obviously I expect it to be slower with lots of stuff open, but my usage patterns haven't changed and its performance certainly has. The harddrive always seems to be being accessed when I have these problems.
The hard drive S.M.A.R.T. status is "verified," and I ran the Apple Hardware Test and it came out fine. But I'm still really worried that something could be going wrong, especially with the hard drive and since I am going away in a few weeks to work on a project and will be away from my backup drive I really want to make sure any problem is taken care of beforehand.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the the problem or about anything I should try?

With lots of concurrent processes and insufficient memory you will experience slow performance and beachballing. This is because the OS is forced to use the hard drive to replace the non-existent physical RAM. See the following:

The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Also, a small hard drive with too little free space and a system lacking in any regular maintenance can also lead to slow performance. See the following:

For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

If you have a Core Duo model then 2 GBs is the maximum RAM you can install. If you have a Core 2 Duo model then you can install up to 4 GBs but they system will only make use of 3 GBs. How do I transfer iphoto library to external hard drive keeping events intact?

Had a one to one session but forgot how to do this. I would like to transfer my iphoto library to an external hard drive keeping the folders and events intact. I figured out how to send all my photos to the hard drive but they all transfer in single images, if that makes sense, and then i have to go thru all of the 15,000 images by hand and sort them into folders. Ahhhhhhh!
When they showed me how to do this at apple I am able to open my external hard drive and see a folder labled 'iphotolibrary" and I am able to click it open and then all my events show up just like in iphoto library.
Also does your iphoto library "Trash" take up space on your HD? Forgve me if thats a dumb question but I am kind of a computer "dummy".

"I haven't read the whole thread, so someone could have already mentioned this, but I did the same thing, move my music library to an external drive. The Help articles are helpful, but only up to a point. When that didn't work, I called up AppleCare support up, and they took me through all the standard steps, and got stumped at the same point I did. Finally she suggested trying something, and that ended up doing the trick. So here in brief is what you do:
1) Copy over your "iTunes Music" folder to the external hard drive
2) Go into Advanced preferences to have iTunes look for the "iTunes Music" folder in the new location. If you're like me, your music won't appear in the Library.
3) In iTunes, go to the Library window (which is probably blank), then in a Finder window, find the icon for the "iTunes Music" folder in the new location. Drag that icon onto the Library window.
You should now see a progress window pop up showing all the songs that it's populating the Library window with."

Can I make an external Hard Drive my boot drive

My internal hard drive is about to die, it is making strange grunging noises and the computer is taking up to 30 minutes to boot up. The internal disk is the original 10GB disk with 9.7GB on it.
I constantly get boot disk nearly full warnings. So I bought a Western Digital My Book 2, Home Edition 500GB Firewire Drive. I connected it up and it appeared on my desktop. Being a bit of a div, I tried to drag my old hard disk onto the new one but that failed (obviously). I now need to get everything off my old hard disk and onto my new firewire disk and then make sure that the computer boots up from that one. How can I achieve this, should I install the OS (OS X 10.4.11) on the new disk and then copy over the files, and applications? Or would it be better to "find a way of cloning my drive onto the new disk.
More questions...do I need to make partitions on the new disk (I don't know what these are I'm afraid)
When I have set up the new drive as a boot disk, can I just unplug the old internel disk?

Is it dangerous to use an external HD to boot from? The guy at Circuit City told me it was.
One danger of using an external hard drive as a boot drive, is the connection is not as reliable as an internal hard drive. The other is the mistaken assumption that just because it is separate, or not part of the computer, that it is safe. The only true safety comes in numbers. You should always backup your data*:

2.5" hard drives are a little less reliable than 3.5" hard drives because of the smaller parts involved. Mac Minis have 2.5" hard drives, whereas other desktop Macs have 3.5" hard drives. Whether the reliability of Firewire or USB over SATA or Parallel ATA on 2.5" is enough to offset this difference is hard to say. Having enough backups ensures you don't have to be surprised when you find out in your situation.

MacBook Pro - Hard Drive replaced now external won't allow me to view any of my back ups from my previous hard drive that crashed folders have red circle with minus sign in them and says I don't have permission, how do I get around this?

Select the drive and Finder > Get info and at the bottom "ignore permissions on this volume"
You can copy the files, but the ownership on the files still belongs to the other user account, once your done copying, then perform a #6 Reset Users Permissions and that will set all the ownership to that account.

Quiet Internal Hard Drives

Hello all,
I have a new MacPro with 2X 500GB internal hard drives (Seagate...from the Mac Store). The problem is that the hard drives are just too noisy. I know noise is subjective but these are rattling away at a level which is unacceptable.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to a quieter hard drive solution?
I would be very grateful for any help.

I have one Western Digital and 3 Seagate drives in the case of my G4 Quicksilver, all very quiet, at least I think they are. Could be the fan of my ATI card drowns them all out!
I have Seagates in firewire enclosures that are very quiet. I think I would open your case up and track down the rattlers.

When I open my hard drive, it just shows 'backup', the same thing when I open it with Windows. Thinking of reformatting it back to be used to Mac and Windows. And not use it again with Time Machine. If you want to format the External drive as universally compatible, your best bet is to format it as exFAT. Note that reformatting the drive erases all contents of the drive.
1) Open Disk Utility located in /Applications/Utilities/ (or simply type it in spotlight and the application will show up)
2) Select the external Hard drive
3) Click the 'erase' tab.
4) Under format: select exFAT
5) Click "Erase" in the lower right hand corner to reformat the drive.
