Hard Drive Replacement Program - Will Apple come to me?
Hello,
I have an imac 27" iMac with one of the affected hard drives. As you know these are not small machines and i'm concerned about transporting it to an Apple store.
As i have AppleCare, will I be able to arrange for an engineer to come out to me to replace the hard drive?
Regards
Scott

You have to take the computer to an Apple Retail Store. Replacement programs are for all the computers affected, not only the Macs registered with AppleCare
Wrong. If under AppleCare and, in least in the US, if you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine. Additionally, others who don't have the AppleCare PP have had onsite service under the same conditions for the HD replacement. There's no need to haul it around if eligible. For the OP, call and ask for it.

Just got back my iMac with a brand new replacement hard drive through the iMac 1 TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program. With only apps installed, no files and fonts added, the hard drive already shows permission problems. Is that normal? The replacement hard drive is a Seagate again, ST31000528BAS. Do people like their replacement hard drive?
Just now looking at these... Last recall 2009 MacbookPro Video issues, I waited 4 years and it took 4 trips to apple store with video of the machine problems... Days and months past, finally with stern discussion with manager, got resolved. Now Drive recall on work machine... better take advantage now. IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT!
Should have thought of it... Have TM full back up... (will look into clone next time, now that I see this). Take in 27iMac running 10.6.8, 5-7 days, what a joke, my boss will be happy to pay for a week without working. Finally get, "if you have TM back up, 3 days." Get machine back with 10.6.3, hit the R recovery, click TM back up, runs for 2 hours, reboots, looks great. Box up take back to office... update to install - OH CRAP, still running 10.6.3. Updates crash with error on install, BUG PROBELM, nothing runs.
Call Apple... after hours, tells me to boot using 10.6.2 disk, wipe, reinstall OS, udate to 10.6.8, THEN do the restore. GREAT! Only thing 10.6.2 DVD won't read... now back on phone... take back to the store, Genius says, "Oh, can't boot a newer system w/ old disk, that's why it won't read." PROMISES it'll be fixed, if you leave it over night... GREAT!
Pick up next day, supposedly, booted to disk, wiped drive, reinstalled, updated to 10.6.8 and did the RIGHT restore... Looks GREAT... apps run and 10.6.8 OS. Back to the office... CRAP!! not running right... fonts messed up, drop box app needs new install, cocktail needs upgrade, Fetch not working, memorized paths gone... back ups locked out of permissions... ***!!
4 hours on phone with apple and still not solved. Evidently... either different account names caused problems... and/or they never restored personal "settings". Seems there are 3 ways to restor... Running Migration Assistant, Restoring after they load a new OS... or NOW WAITING for them to send me a bootable 10.6.3 disk and then boot from disk, w/o installing OS and doing a restore from TM.
Can begin to make enough stink!! So now can't back up without doing a full 400 GB back up and possibly destroying any good back ups... can't work, liek having hands tied behind back. WAITING for solution! TICKED OFF!!! -
My computer is part of the iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive replacement program. What is the best external modem to use in order to back up my files prior to me dropping off my computer.
As Babowa says, get an external disk. You should have one for normal backups anyway.
Actually, I'm a strong fan of having multiple backups. 3 copies including the original, 2 different backup formats, and 1 backup off-site.
And when you have your iMac in for service, if you have just 1 backup at that point in time you have just 1 copy of your data. I get paranoid about my data.
But if you are just making 1 backup, I would use SuperDuper (free for a full clone, and extremely good software, as is Carbon Copy Cloner, but it is not free anymore).
And then I would "Boot" from the clone, to make sure it was a good clone.
Booted from the clone, I would then use Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility to zero the original disk, as suggested by Babowa, so that when they replace the disk, the original disk containing your data is not in the hands of strangers. A single pass of zeros is more than good enough as an erase, as the chances are no one is going to spend the money needed to try and read the erased data. It is not like you have any super secret data, just stuff you do not want the casual data theif to get. You will find the zeroing options under Disk Utility -> Erase -> Security Options
Just make sure you actually boot from your clone before erasing your original. And if you are paranoid like me, make 2 backups, then erase the original :-) -
The good news after my hard drive was replaced during Apple's Seagate replacement program -- all my data and settings reinstalled seamlessly through Time Machine and my external hard drive. Bad news? My BT keyboard will now only forward delete when I hit the delete key rather than backward delete. I find this so ironic since I hated this feature when I switched from PC to Mac, but now I'm totally used to it. I tried resetting the default under system preferences, but it didn't help. Otherwise, keyboard works perfectly. This is so strange. Anyone have any suggestions? Oh -- and now I see my arrows don't work either.

IMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program - how long does it take?
I started a new thread for this issue since the original thread has degenerated into a rant. I just got my love letter from Apple informing me that my new 27" iMac has the bad drive. I backup to an external USB drive using Time Machine, and I am planning to have my nearest Apple store replace the drive sometime in the next few weeks.
I am posting to ask if anyone has yet contacted Apple about this issue? I am curious how long it takes to swap the drives. Can it be done while you wait? Does Apple have any ability to clone the old drive's data to the new? Has anyone been able to arrange for in-home service as mentioned in the original thread?
Please don't use this new thread to rant about the problem. If you need to let off steam, please post to the original thread.
Thanks for the help!Greetings from an apple mac newbie in UK. On the one hand, after getting the email today I was disappointed to find my brand new shiny mac 21.5 might have a fault on hard drive, on the other at least apple points it out! But doubly frustrating for someone that has just taken the plunge and converted from pc/microsoft rubbish after two decades and still finding my feet in macworld....and who upgraded to OS X lion this past weekend without a hitch (nervous as an XP SP2/SP3 veteran)...and had to pay for Lion because I bought my imac just a week to early to qualify for free Lion upgrade.
My decision on Hard drive is to wait and see, firstly to guage experience of apple turn around times/customer experience etc in UK and secondly because I would like to understand what kind of percentage of the seagate drives are faulty...I am backing up with time machine, the machine is under warranty and applecare too, so maybe no need to rush, there's a year yet at least.
Another consideration for me is that I bought my mac with dual drives - the 1TB Harddrive for data and the 256SSD for OSX/apps...idea was to keep the programs on the ssd as it is fastest and is best with less rewrites, the conventional hard drive then used for big data stuff like docs, music and photos. This needed a bit of custom set up involving apple support to get the right things on the right drives, so am in no hurry to muck that up!
PS does anyone else in the UK have my mac dual drive configuration...? -
Do i need a new hard drive? (screen with apple comes up & nothing else)
what has happened to my laptop?
Do i need a new hard drive, because it wont even load, the screen with the apple comes up and nothing else happens. Very frustrating!
any help is great
thanks jHey Jim,
Yes it says verified next to S.M.A.R.T - does that mean that i need a new hard drive
No that would mean your drive is good. However S.M.A.R.T is not infalliable.
my mac is 3 years old i bought it in jan 2006
thought a hard drive had a longer life than that though???
Well normally we think 4-5 years but laptop drives are more prone to failures - smaller and get bumped more.
It seems more like you've got a corrupted OS.
I clicked on disk utility and went on my hardrive and verified disk.
So at that point you were booted on the installer disk?
You should backup all files immediately and try an archive and install.

iLife apparently was installed on the iMac at the time of the purchase. How do I get the program back on the machine. The Apple "Genius" at the Apple Stpore advised me to go to the iTunes store and get a download. How do THEY know that I have iLife? If the store in fact did install the program at purchase how do you get a copy to reinstall on the machine?
LarryiLife is preinstalled on all the Macs. If you purchased iLife in the App Store or your computer came without DVDs, open App Store > Purchases and download the applications. If your Mac came with discs, insert the Applications DVD and install iLife applications

Basically my iMac just crashed and I searched on Google for replacing my hard drive and came across the iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program at http://www.apple.com/support/imac-harddrive/
Which is that Apple is asking all 2009 - 2011 iMac users to return their iMac for a free hard drive replacement because it currently has a fault in it. After entering in my serial number, I see that my iMac is elegible for a replacement.
I did register my iMac with Apple, but I didn't receive any email about this program and I lost all my recent data because of the faulty hard drive. I never had an issue before with the drive so this just happened out of the blue.
Is it possible to get a free data recovery from Apple for this? I find that it was a lack of communication that I lost most of my data.I completely understand that it's my responsibility to back up my data but I have it set to every 2nd month, not on a weekly or daily basis to back up the data.
Apple might not be in data recovery business but could they not acquire a third party to do this?
This is what happened:
It was on sleep overnight and when I tried waking it, it was lagging badly. So I shut it down and restarted it. I phoned into techincal support to find out whats wrong, but they were giving me advice to reset the params etc. But i think it made it worse because it didnt want to get passed the white start up screen.
So I phoned back to ask if it's a usual issue with my version of iMac and the man replied that it isn't common and that I should run the disk utility to check the hard drives health.
I installed Mountain Lion on a USB and started the disk utility. Then it highlighted in red that it's a hardware fault and cannot be repaired by the disk utility. Therefore the hard drive has a serious fault with it.
That's when I Google'd for a replacement drive and came across the program. The techincal guy didn't even tell me about it or anything.
If I knew about this sooner, I would have taken it in for a replacement. -

IMac 1TB drive replacement program: notifications sent in error (don't panic)
An hour ago I received a note like this:
Dear Apple Customer,
Product Serial Number(s): XXXXXX
Case ID: 11111
Follow Up Number: 1111
Thank you for submitting a refund request. We need a repair receipt and banking details to complete your refund.
Please contact the service center that replaced your hard drive and obtain a receipt, if you do not already have it.
Reply to this email and attach a scan of the receipt. Do not change the subject line.
This made me unhappy, as I thought I'd completed the refund request process for my defective drive two weeks ago.
I wrote a snarky blog post, posted a question here that was removed for violating posting rules (guilty), and replied to the email with a complaint. Then I received this note:
Dear Apple Customer,
The prior communication you received from Apple stating the need for additional information was in error.
We completed your refund for a hard drive replacement as part of the iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program.
Refund Amount: 281.25
Credit Memo Number: 111111
Case ID: 11111
Follow Up Number: 111111
You will receive your refund in four-to-six weeks.
So the original notice was a mistake. I assume I'm not the only person who got it. If you got the notice, and haven't received a correction, try replying and ask if it was sent in error. Thanks for the report!

How to restore Itunes account after Hard Drive replacement programme
I was part of the Hard Drive replacment programme by Apple after which I have set up my computer as normal to find all the music, filmas and apps have gone from my Itunes Acccount can anyone help
Restore all of your important data from the backup of the computer.
If you have no backup, the library and playlists should be possible to recreate by following the instrucitons here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451 -
Well my X120e is ordered, obviously have a little bit to wait lol so I have been investigating the hard drive replacement I will likely get.
Essentially I have narrowed it down to two choices:
1. Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB 7200 RPM - $74.99
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136692
2. Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive 500GB 7200 RPM + 4GB SSD - $119.99
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148591
(Also considering the 320GB version of both of these, drops the price difference to $35.)
The price isn't the end of the world but obviously I would only want to spend the cash on the seagate if it is actually worth it. I have a few questions.
1. Is the SSD on the seagate actually quick, or is it more of a gimmick? Will it give me speed improvements given that it is only running on a 3.0 GB/s connection rather than the 6.0 that most modern SSD's are running on?
2. I have heard that people are having issues with the seagate hybrids, anyone have any experience with this?
3. One of the most important things to me would be improving boot time, which of these drives is going to give me a noticeable improvement in that? If there is a difference at all.
4. General question about replacing the hard drive: Lenovo has optimized windows for improved boot time on their computers (thinkpad experience or something like that??), is there anyway to preserve this after replacing the hard drive?
5. Any general thoughts you have on the two drives above, or hard drive replacements in general!
Thanks! Can't wait to get my thinkpad.Yeah, that's what I was hearing about the hybrid drive having some issues. Though I don't have any first hand experience.
The Hybrid Drives gain performance boost when the data is sitting in the SSD portion (such as when you restart an OS, the startup for the second and further times would be shorter cause by that time it's using the SSD portion of the hybrid drive).
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5818&review=ssd+vs+hard+drive Has both the WD Scorpio Black and Seagate Momentus XT in tests.
Seems the Seagate Momentus outperforms the WD Scorpio Black consistently in multiple tests... Just that hybrid drive issue.... Something to ponder about.
3.0 GB/s is SATA II while 6.0 GB/s is SATA III which just started coming out. Supposedly the power saving features of laptops start getting in the way of 200+ MB/s SSD's performance, so SATA 3.0GB/s would be more than enough (since SATA III SSD are in the 500+ MB/s)
According to the benchmark, Momentus XT has a faster boot time.
If you make a Factory Recovery disc from the standard HDD that came in your Lenovo X120e, you can use that to install onto your new HDD to get the 'benefits' that Lenovo has added to the Windows 7 partition. This will require a cd/dvd drive unless there's a way to put the recovery onto the USB. You can only make one rescue and recovery disc, so the second partition which is to store the rescue and recovery data can be deleted and merged into your main partition after you finish installing the OS and setting it up.
The thing I'm concerned with is how Windows 7 handles that SSD in the Seagate Hybrid... If it tries to defrag it, then that's a nono cause it will do unnecessary writing to the SSD that doesn't benefit the SSD at all. Unsure if you'll need to do an 'upgrade' install on top of the lenovo OS rescue and recovery partition to have Windows 7 set up correctly for SSD usage. You should look into any information about how windows 7 handles hybrid drives (since windows 7 turns off certain services if it recognizes SSD).
G'luck!
P.S. If the SSD portion of Seagate Hybrid acts like any other SSD and accepts TRIM command, you should probalby install the latest AMD SATA controller or revert to Microsoft AHCI controller for passing of TRIM command from Windows 7.

I've recently had my hard drive replaced in the Apple Store.
I used time machine to backup and after I got my mac back with the new hard drive I restored all my files which are now on my computer and I can access it with no problems.
The problem is that I've changed my username (admin) and when I enter time machine, I can't access the backups of my old hard drive which is really frustrating.
A red negative sign appears on most folders. Also in macintosh HD/users there is a folder named with my old username and I get the same red negative sign in the folders.
Any idea what can be done about this?
If you need more info just ask.
Thanks in advanceTurn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source disk. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the icon list. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane. -
Time Machine backups extremely slow after hard drive replacement
I'm having trouble with Time Machine backups following a hard drive replacement. The Apple Store replaced my MacBook Pro's damaged hard drive three days ago and I successfully restored my system (OSX 10.6.8) using a Time Machine backup. The computer is running fine now, but ever since the repair my Time Machine back-ups take a very long time (>2 hours per backup, versus 30-60 seconds before the repair). I know that the intiial backup of a new computer can take a while but I'm now onto complete backup #10 since the repair and they are not getting quicker. I'm not adding/changing many files or software in between backups. The backups appear to be successful but the external hard drive and computer fan are running nearly constantly, which is concerning (and annoying). Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks.

Hard drive replaced, backup successful, now can't sync to time machine
Hi Guys
I had a failing hard drive (S.M.A.R.T. status) so I got the hard drive replaced on my apple care plan. I had been able to successfully back-up the entire system using a WD My passport for Mac (1TB). The tech uploaded the new Lion operating system and then plugged in my WD to reinstate the computer. All went well. However, now my computer won't continue the Time Machine backups from where it left off, rather wants to reback-up the whole system again, which it can't as there is insufficient room on the drive. Do I have to delete everything on the external drive and start again? There's no way to avoid the need to back up all your files, as Time Machine has no way of knowing they're the same as they were on the old drive. The best solution is to start a new backup on another external drive. You need more than one backup anyway, to be safe. When you're sure you'll no longer need the data on the backup drive you have now, erase it and start over.
